How do you browse SD Card on computer? - myTouch 4G General

I can't get the darn SD Card to come up on the computer. I went through the hardware installation stuff but it won't let me browse any files. I click on Removable Disk (E: ) and it says please insert a drive but my phone is already connected and mounted.
When I plug my phone in I don't get a prompt anywhere asking if I want to mount. In the settings it's on 'disk drive' and in the SD Card settings it says it's mounted, but it still won't let me access the files. When I plug it into the computer no dialog box comes up, but it does for every other phone I use. Any help?

odd... both of mine mount fine on ubuntu and mac

Never mind I figured it out!

How did you figure it out because, I do not get the option to mount in the notification bar and my computer won't recognize it. HELP

Well, I figured it out as well Good ole battery pull did the trick

You have to turn off USB debugging in settings before you plug it in.

Anyone figure out how to keep ringtones and other files out of the music app?

That's strange. I don't have to do that.

[Q] uneven and inaccurate instructions.

As a newcomer to the world of android (I just migrated from iPhone 4), I must confess that the multitude of advice and recommendations from the advise givers are clouded with wrong advice and misleading recommendations.
I am very knowledgeable in computers, and was quite knowledgeable with the various iPhones I owned. but with the Galaxy S (Captivate) I just purchased I am ready to give up....
Is there anybody kind enough who can explain to me why is it that I am unable to access my phone from my computer (W7x64 nor from my MacBook).
I was able to root the phone and even flash it with the Froyo, Cognition 2.2 Beta 5.5, from the phone itself (using the online advice from the Cognition web site), but can not access the phone, thus unable to move files to the SDCARD root directory.
download the kies mini application from samsung.com
install it, which will install the drivers needed.
then go to settings->application->usb and select usb storage.
then go to touchwiz home screen only, and plug in your phone.
easy peasy...
if you have another launcher in place, turn on usb debugging under the development section of applications in settings and then plug it in... then pull down notification from top and select usb.. it will ask you to mount.
boom... done and done.
Semi wrong info is given above. For a mac(I also have a pro) you should just have to turn on usb debygging mode under application settings. You will not be able to control the phone as easily as with the iphone but you will have access to your sd card and internal memory.
No need for drives but you will need to mount it

And on a pc, enable usb debugging in settings-applications-development. Then pull down the notification screen and press the option that says something like select to copy files. You can then access the internal and external sd cards as drives on your computer.

Actually, you don't need to enable USB debugging, you just select the option to "always ask" or "mass storage" and then you get the pull down option to mount the drive to copy files.

Interestingly that option stopped working for me many ROMs ago. Not sure why, bu the only way I could do it was using the debugging route. I am currently on Cognition 2.2Beta5.5, so I decided to check mass storage since I hadn't tried it in a while. It worked! So if anyway else out there can't do it using "always ask" or "mass storage", then the debugging method can be used as an alternate. Thanks for bringing this up.
And as a general comment on the original title of the post, things move fast. What was accurate for one person on his/her phone at one particular moment may not be the best or even the right way to do it on your phone, in your situation, with whatever ROM you are running. So if you want to hack your phone then expect to have to spend a lot of time reading and perhaps even making a few mistakes along the way.

Can no longer mount phone to pc

Hey guys, I posted this on androidforums but got no response. So I figured I would ask here, see if anyone can help.
I've been having a problem more and more with mounting my phone to my pc as a disk drive. I want to pull pics off and add things obviously. Increasingly, my phone just won't mount as a disk drive. I have to connect and disconnect it several times to get it to work. And now today, it won't mount no matter what I do.
~ Rebooted the phone
~ Make sure debugging is off (won't work either way)
~ Tried making it automatic and/or make it ask which connection
~ Used "Safely Remove Hardware" and it doesn't help
~ The pc sees the drive added but won't go any farther
~ My phone sees the card just fine and I can access it just fine (32gb)
~ If I take the card out and mount to the pc, it sees it just fine
~ The phone still charges while connected to the pc
~ Sideloading also still works just fine
~ Stock Inspire, no root or anything
So what the hell? Makes no sense... I've since downloaded "Wife File Explorer Pro" and it works like a champ. I can see all the contents and folders of the card and I can upload/download just fine. I'm fine using the Wifi Explorer but I don't like the fact that I can't use my cable. I'm not exchanging the phone so that's out. Any thoughts or ideas? Appreciate your time!
have you tried a different usb cable?

ah, ok. it 'kinda' sounds like it's in charge only mode instead of disk mode. do you have it set to ask each time or default to one of the settings?
select diskdrive on phone and I have debugging enabled, make sure to install htc sync, my computer will see the drive but cant access it till i actually select mount as disk drive and click done, then it is accessible, you can try a different usb port, and then try restoring phone if all else fails, your pics should still be on phone.
Sometimes I forget to select the "Done" button at the bottom of the screen to lock in my choice for the USB.
Yeah, I've tried all of this. I've set it to disk drive and automatic and it only charges. I've set it to ask me each time, and it does not. Typically when you plug it in, the usb icon shows up at the top but it no longer does this yet will still charge. Ask, don't ask, debugging on or off, it just doesn't work. When I plug it in, the pc shows the new connection as the H drive but says nothing is inserted. When I remove it, that "drive" disappears. I always make sure and hit done when I choose, nothing seems to work.
Oh well, it's no big deal really. That Wifi Explorer works really well so I can access everything from my browser through wifi. It works suprising well!
I had this problem earlier today I physically removed my memory.card and rebooted.the phone and that fixed it. But it scared me. I have a wintec 16 gb men card class 10. What are you using?

I'm using a SanDisk 32gb card, just a slow class 2. Did you mean you re-booted the phone without the card in it and then put it back in after boot up? Or removed it, shut down, re-inserted card and then powered back on?

HELP, I xboxed my SD card...

I wanted to copy music from my sd card to my xbox, but couldn't find an option to do that. While looking around different settings, I found an option to "make this device xbox compatible" or something like that for my SD card, so I figured, ok, this will probably allow me to copy and stuff, so I did it. Now I can't access my SD Card at all!!! I looked under SD card menu in phone settings and it says "restricted access changed". How can I fix this?
Try to reverse this from your xbox if you can find the option

Your going to have to format the sd card.

Format it from your computer if you can. Might be able to save the data that way.
I did that with a USB thumb drive, I've never been able to access it from a PC again, no matter what I did

Same thing happened to me. My USB became a paperweight after that

I fixed it. I mounted it ti my PC through Recovery menu then manually deleted hidden xbox folder that was taking the entire sdcard space.
Regular formatting wasn't doing the trick.
FYI the xbox has an option to revert it back to a normal drive
I tried that option, it didn't fix anything.

can't see files on SD card

Hi guys.
Whats is the correct way to log on to a SD card?
When I put the SD card of my canon in the dock it fails to notice the card. I have to restart my TF. Then it sees the card. Is this normal?
After that, finding the files on the card seems to be a bit awkward as well.
thanks for your help!
Steven
If the card was not in the tf when you started it, you need to go to the menu and mount it after inserting it. You should also unmount it before removing it just to be safe. This can be done in the lower right task bar.

Just so you know, I know. But if you're going to give cryptic advice might as well not give it at all. May be obvious to you but for someone who doesn't know its not obvious.
OK, But not sure what is cryptic about lower right task bar. There is only one and if you click on it one of the options is mount and unmount SD card.
tnx
That's a good tip. I didn't know where to mount the card.
I'll try that next time. Thanks!!

You said use menu. Which menu? Under settings? In an app that is bleedingly obvious to everyone but newbies?
In fact, nobody uses the word menu for this particular task, so this in itself is cryptic. Please understand that I've been dealing with 1337s and 1337 wannabes ever since I got my first computer. I can sniff out one like a hounddog.
c'est la ton qui fait la musique
wtf is a 1337?

I've noticed this as well. I notice that if I have the card in, undock and redock it doesn't mount properly. I haven't played with it much, but I think if I eject the card and then undock it works better. Definitely a bug. Rebooting always resolves the issue.
This seems like an unlikely connection, but I have a Canon camera as well. Another annoyance as well is that the SD images don't show up in MediaStore (Gallery).

I use QuickPic. Yoy can choose the included folders.
not solved
so I tried looking in the "menu" after installing the card. No luck. I have to rrestart the TF to make it show up. when i do, it shows up on the task bar.
Also always remember to check theres no boot flags on the sd and its formated correctly i once formatted to ext2 for a project forgot to switch back then wondered why my phone wouldnt read it lol

You mean the camera? Might be worth putting it to the pc backup your data then wipe it and do one big fat32 partition with no flags

OK tnx
I use a 600D. It's advised to format the SD card in the cam to erase the images.
Not sure what kind of format that is. (low level?). I'll give it a try.
Mind you. the TF has problems detecting the cam (connected through USB) as well. I have to restart my TF to get working also.

Can't mount SD-card

It was working uhh I dunno a few days ago, this morning it wouldn't mount. I initially thought it was a MIUI problem (1.11.1) I rebooted, nothing. I wasn't even getting the usb disk toggle in my status pull down. I checked the USB settings and "ask on connect" was on. So I rebooted into RA and tried USB-MS, still not coming up on my PC. On my phone I can go into Astro and see the SD and everything on it fine, I played some music and watched some videos, so I'm assuming there's nothing wrong with it. I'm also assuming there's nothing wrong with the usb cable because it's charging my phone.
I've exhausted ideas on how to fix this, any help would be lovely.

Try plugging your SD card into PC with an adapter. You may need to reformat your SD card. SD card corruption is a known issue with MIUI

But if the card was corrupt then wouldn't the phone be able to not access it directly either? I know when I ran my last Rom (Synergy) a few times when I plugged the cable in I'd get windows popup saying errors detected and it needed to be scanned. I don't have an adapter I guess I should to go and get one.
thanks for the reply.

Here is what I would do. Use dropbox to back up any files that the phone doesn't see as corrupted then reformat the SD card. Also remember that when you unplug from the PC that you have to "safely eject" it before unplugging. This is normally the cause.

Thanks for the feedback, it magically decided to pop up on it's own, I had it plugged in and charging and when I came back from lunch there it was. I scanned it and it seems a-okay. I'll remember the safely eject thing, I know about it I just tend to forget to do it, and by tend I mean always lol
