can't see files on SD card - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
Whats is the correct way to log on to a SD card?
When I put the SD card of my canon in the dock it fails to notice the card. I have to restart my TF. Then it sees the card. Is this normal?
After that, finding the files on the card seems to be a bit awkward as well.
thanks for your help!
Steven

If the card was not in the tf when you started it, you need to go to the menu and mount it after inserting it. You should also unmount it before removing it just to be safe. This can be done in the lower right task bar.

Just so you know, I know. But if you're going to give cryptic advice might as well not give it at all. May be obvious to you but for someone who doesn't know its not obvious.

OK, But not sure what is cryptic about lower right task bar. There is only one and if you click on it one of the options is mount and unmount SD card.

tnx
That's a good tip. I didn't know where to mount the card.
I'll try that next time. Thanks!!
Steven

You said use menu. Which menu? Under settings? In an app that is bleedingly obvious to everyone but newbies?
In fact, nobody uses the word menu for this particular task, so this in itself is cryptic. Please understand that I've been dealing with 1337s and 1337 wannabes ever since I got my first computer. I can sniff out one like a hounddog.

c'est la ton qui fait la musique
wtf is a 1337?

I've noticed this as well. I notice that if I have the card in, undock and redock it doesn't mount properly. I haven't played with it much, but I think if I eject the card and then undock it works better. Definitely a bug. Rebooting always resolves the issue.
This seems like an unlikely connection, but I have a Canon camera as well. Another annoyance as well is that the SD images don't show up in MediaStore (Gallery).

I use QuickPic. Yoy can choose the included folders.

not solved
so I tried looking in the "menu" after installing the card. No luck. I have to rrestart the TF to make it show up. when i do, it shows up on the task bar.

Also always remember to check theres no boot flags on the sd and its formated correctly i once formatted to ext2 for a project forgot to switch back then wondered why my phone wouldnt read it lol

You mean the camera? Might be worth putting it to the pc backup your data then wipe it and do one big fat32 partition with no flags

OK tnx
I use a 600D. It's advised to format the SD card in the cam to erase the images.
Not sure what kind of format that is. (low level?). I'll give it a try.
Mind you. the TF has problems detecting the cam (connected through USB) as well. I have to restart my TF to get working also.

BSOD now with SD mount and sd file disappearing

I have been transferring etc to sd card ok after mounting it on the G1 screen. For some reason now after updating the radio it gives me a BSOD! Not sure whether pulling out the 8gb sd card and installing the 1GB update card may have stuffed it or not but it says to run chkdsk on it......
The reason i am transferring onto it is i have a folder called media and in it i have a folder notifications which has the icq "UHOH" on it- but for some reason it keeps disappearing from my card. Any ideas of why?
thanks
i have stuffed the sd card- mustn't have dismounted it properly or something- the whole mount/unmount etc when plugging in the G1 is confusing- to mount is easy but how do you dismount it from the PC when you have finished using it?
ok. can someone tell me how to dismount the g1 from the pc properly so as not to damage the card again- it is fixed now with chkdsk.
the instructions say to "You can also go to Home > Settings > SD card & phone
storage, and clear the Use for USB storage check box." but of course that is not there..... I see there is an unmount/eject sd card but i thought that was for unmounting card from the G1 itself so i could take the card out without turning G1 off.
Did a search and couldn't find anything on this.
How do i unmount it when G1 is connected via USB to pc?
****edit***** can a mod please move this thread to the plain old "dream" section?
i got you
Look for safely remove hardware it should be in the notification area(it looks like a usb plug with a check on it) Right click that and click Safely remove hardware now just find your device and remove it
have fun
Edit: or just right click on Removable Disk(whichever the G1 is find out) in MY Computer and press Safely remove hardware or Eject not sure if its the same as
Safely remove hardware
but any ways have fun again
thx mate- so i don't have to do anything from the G1?

well now maybe your card is corrupt. Its happen to me before with an external hard drive(just pulling it out without safely removing hardware.)Corruption!!
try this use a different mem card(one in the house or new) to get to the root of the problem (most likely you need a different mem card)

[Q] Phone keeps losing installed apps on SD card

So I've been having this issue for about a week now. All the apps installed on my phones SD card once I reboot are not loading up. I know the data is still there because the first time that it happened I spent the better part of day freaking out thinking everything was gone gone. At some point I thought of checking of the data by plugging in into the computer. Turns out (1) all the apps miraculously return (2) I can't mount the SD card anymore (3) I can't unmount the SD card anymore either.
What is the deal? It's kind of annoying to lost everything every time you reboot. I'm not really in the mood to tether my phone each time for the unforeseeable future just to keep everything loaded. Has this happened to anyone before? What should I do?

What do you mean, the icons? I'm going to assume that's what you're referring to, for this reply...
If that's what you meant, icons on the home screen take a few seconds to get themselves drawn, if apps are on SD.
You can switch to a different skin then switch back to your original skin, to get them to redraw. Or delete/reposition them one at a time. It's a workaround, but changing the skin temporarily is faster.
It's a sense bug, I'm pretty sure.
Doesn't happen if apps are installed on the phones internal storage, so until they fix it, move your apps onto internal storage, if you don't want to deal with this each time you reboot. They run faster if they're not on your SD anyway.
Unless you have waaaay more apps than you really need, of course.
Sorry should've been a little more specific. The shortcuts on my home screen are all no longer working and I'm well aware of how long it takes for sense to load them up on startup but even when I go to display all apps it only displays the apps on internal storage. In fact each and every app on the card (in the apps settings) has a funny icon that has a little "sd" on it now and just says computing and will not load.
And since writing this I can no longer get the phone to load any apps from the sd card by tethering it to the computer. It's still accessible - just downloaded today's song from amazon and played it - but apps on it are almost like they're gone.
This happens to me sometimes too. But usually when it happens to me I can go into Settings - Applications - Manage Applications and move the troublesome app to internal storage, and then it's fine. It never completely disappears.
It might do you some good to reformat your SD card. Move everything off of it first, then format it, then put everything back on.
Is it the stock 8GB SD card, or a different one?

Yup.
@homeslice976 copied, formatted (made sure it was FAT32), copied everything back and no dice. Same symptoms, Apps will not load.
@zuriken I don't know why you asked about the stock SD card or not, do you think it needs to be replaced? It's only been since February.

full format, chkdsk /f, still nothing though. This is honestly getting to the point where I'm tempted to switch to another phone. Why can't I access my stuff?
Another new bonus, every time I get some sort of alert it now plays random MP3s from the SD card. What is going on...

It's gonna be a little while until I can try a new SD card but I'll get back to you.
The only ROM I loaded was the one to originally root that removed the uploading cap from ATT.
I also solved where the random sounds were coming from apparently it doesn't want to play my selected theme and no matter what I do the only one that works is the original HTC default 2010 one or if I download any only the Celesta theme plays... I have a sinking feeling that copying all this funky data isn't going to resolve anything but I'll give it a go.

Since you haven't been messing with multiple roms and such, I don't know what else it could be, other than the SD card taking a dump.

[Q] SD card exFat format

Hi all,
I have a 64Gig micro SD card that I formatted to exFat on my Win7 PC.
My question is, Why do I have to repair the card everytime I return it to my Win7 PC card reader to move music or videos to and from it?
Fortunately I don't loose any data but it seems like the MS exFat and the Asus exFat are not totally compatible?
Will the constant repairing limit my cards life span or worse maybe permanently damage it?

Are you ejecting the card from the 700 safely or just yanking it out?
Windows Vista/7 scream 'repair' about pretty much every data storage that has been connected to another device. You can actually just click 'continue without scanning'. It will simply proceed to load the device. (Another one of the wonderful features of Windows 7. God I miss XP.)

No, I guess that is a possibility, just thought exFAT was made for removable storage and finished writing to the media when the file transfer was done?

This is exactly what happens.
I'll try ejecting it from the T700, maybe android/linux mount the removable storage differently then windows and I just became accustomed to not ejecting anymore.
Funny though, it never has happened with FAT32, but my video backups are >4Gigs.
Hasn't happened to me yet on my Infinity, but happens relentlessly on my BIONIC. I even formatted the microSDCard in Windows on my computer, and it still does it. I suppose it is because of the file handling in Android, it usually starts only after I've deleted a file in any file manager in Android. And I do a lot of housekeeping on my phone, in terms of junk / old file deletions.
Could it be the same thing here?

[Q] microSD

Hello, I had Transformer about a year now. I have installed CyanogenMod 10 (JB 4.1) but the problem i have as my microSD card that I just bought will not get recognised in Transformer. I have "Samsung 32gb Class 10". It works fine if I put it thought the adaptor to the docking station and get recognised straight away. I tryed to format it to FAT32 and then insert it in the microSD slot but still same, it just does not wont to know it. I Kingston 16gb Class 2 and its absolutely the same problem. Can it be that the microSD slot it knacked since I've bought it? Please help someone.
P.S Mount SD card comes up in the Settings > Storage but after i press it in couple of minutes table says "Unfortunately, Setting has stopped"

I think that you must be right. Your sd card slot must have problem.
But before any coclusion you have to see some things. What rom do you have? Did you try it with a different clean install (after making a nandroid backup for not loosing everything)?
I have kingston 16gb class 4 and I have no problem. (FAT32)
Finally I couldn't be surprised if sd card slot is mulfumctioning from beginning cause mine has problem with internal mic from beginning.

#1 Ensure that the contacts for the SD card are clean.
#2 Give the slot a quick blow out with some compressed air or such. NO VACUUM CLEANERS.
#3 After doing the above steps, put in the card, then power down. wait about 3 minutes, and power it back up into normal boot. These should get the device to see it and accept it. Other wise you may have gone and goofed up the locking mechanism inside that is not allowing the contacts to seat correctly. This can be resolved by a tear down and rebuild with a good service tech.

I press on it and its saying "Preparing external device..." but Setting freezes, after i try to copy anything on the microSD card it says "Insufficient storage". So i dont know what to do.

Plug it into the computer and see what files are there. May just need to clear out some things. BUT I am beginning to be more inclined to say that there is an issue within the card itself. If the tab can see it it should be able to mount it. If it is saying that there is not enough space, either format it via the computer and re try or take it back and tell them that it is a bad card.

NTFS won't work. I'm sure you are aware of that. Format it from your phone, THEN put it back in the tablet. If it is still the case, then you have ruled out the card being the issue, and are back to that it could be dust / dirt / debris in the port, OR that you have a faulty port.
I revert to the stock Asus ICS ROM from there website. Reformated microSD card to FAT32 with Long formating. Wiped all data from Tablet. Insertet a card and it might show straight away or not show at all or after pressing Mount External Storage, Setting will freeze and message with Wait or Close will pop up. If the microSD mounted and the SD card sigh apper in the bottom of the screen near clock i can get in to the card and creat folders, but if i try to copy something in it, it says Insuffician Storage. So i dont think it something with the card or a port, because it can detect the card accasionly and get in to it. So is there any way to do something with the main software part, not the android it self with something that android installed to or there is nothing that android get installed to? Thank you

issues after installing CROMi-X 5.4 deodex

When I installed cromi-x everything was working perfectly but the next day my 32gb micro sd that I've been using on it since the tablet first came out stopped working for some reason, it was not getting detected anymore but if I go to settings > storage I can see "MicroSD" and the only option there is mount external storage which does absolutely nothing every time I click on it and that option with "MicroSD" disappears whenever I remove the micro sd card.
And ever since then my tablet has been waking up with like a 1 second delay, but if I remove my micro sd card it wakes up with normal speed/no delay.
First time doing this kind of stuff so not sure what's wrong...

yea, for some reason I cannot get this micro sd card to work on any pc/phone/tablet anymore, it detects it but there's nothing there for me to get into the storage let alone try to format it. I tried a different micro sd card and it works perfectly on the tablet and my sd card reader... not sure how my first micro sd broke or something after installing cromi-x, i did literally nothing to it besides putting the files in to install cromi-x

Well CROMi-X doesn't do anything to the card, so I don't see how my ROM could break it. Sounds like something corrupted or maybe the card has died. What brand is it?
There are other low level tools you can use that maybe able to rescue it but if windows can't see it you may not be able to use them.

Can you drop some names? I have a big capacity card that has refused to act its age for some time now. I've tried H2testW and the thing reported the correct storage but slowed down considerably after writing half its capacity.
You can try Gparted. You would have to burn the image to a CD or create a bootable stick and run it from there. Make sure your BIOS is set for booting from a bootable disc or USB drive before it boots Windows.

Tried formatter 4. Took the whole day to erase 64GB. The program found no errors. Repartitioned it again with Gparted. Still encountered data loss. Guess the card has expired. But thanks again for the tips.
What brand/size was your card?
I had a similar experience with a cheapo 16GB card a few years ago.
Thanks,
