My mom's dumb-phone broke and I convinced her to get a smart phone. The cheapest one they had was an incredible for $99.
During the conversation with the verizon rep, he kept mentioning how great advanced task killer was and how it saved battery life. The rep himself uses an incredible and showed it and he was using advanced task killer.
The first thing the rep did was installed advanced task killer onto my mom's incredible. The first thing I did when we left the store was uninstalled it.
Why is verizon so obsessed with this dumb app that serves no purpose on froyo?

because people are used to memory leaks on their PCs thanks to microsh*t products so think everything works like that.

Correction. Serves no purpose on android. Period. Android from day one was built to multitask. And what the guy above me said. Because Microsoft is junk and if you don't manually take on the memory management on windows, the os falls apart.
Also... this should be in the general forum.

Actually funny story. So i was in the verizon store just browsing around and overheard one of the reps telling the person they were helping. well they told the customer to install ATK and at that point i chimed in. I told them that would be a mistake and that Android OS does not require a task manager. I then proceeded to go into an in-depth explanation of why. The customer immediately ask the rep is if i was right. he said that i wasn't and that if she doesn't kill her task then her phone will bog down, freeze up, and then eventually reset possibly losing a lot of data in the process. i laughed and then pulled up the google video from the android sight and showed them. at that point the manager of the store had shown up and i explained it all to him. he told me that he would update his staff of this and then proceeded to offer me a job which i declined.
well that is my story.

That VZ rep is going above and beyond. You see, he is probably the guy who's opinions are the only answer and everyone else's opinions are dumb. This is why I buy my phones and tweak my service from their website. There are times I call-in to make changes to service not offered on their web console, but it's rare.

Cool "story" bro
hahahah x2, everytime i go in verizon i hear them mention it, they did it for my inc, my mom, sisters, and dads droid's as well. LOL!
Only reason I use advanced task killer is to fix my internet browser after it freezes watching a video...it wont pick up any internet...it'll just stay there trying to load up the page but never goes anywhere until I use some sort of task killer. I just have advanced task manager and didn't notice to myself how rarely I ever use it. No noticeable difference in battery life or speed of the phone

at least the staff at my 2 stores has been "enlightened" to the truth - all future customers : your welcome
this is all so funny. I have about 5 friends that the same thing happened to. they all told me "verizon put it on their phones". thankfully they listened to me and took it off.
And i would go as far as saying "they actually HURT the phone" (not that they are only "useless". Especially with 2.2)

To use it to help "fix memory leaks" is just plain dumb... but to use it to free up ram and stop unneeded programs from running, i don't see how it could hurt.
Once again I am not a developer in any sense, but the less programs running = the less memory used = the less battery used... thats just how i feel.
BTW i don't use ATK lol

What google video from an android site?
...just curious.
Actually, I worked with Verizon for about 2 and a half years as a service technician and know exactly why they recommend it: Poor Information and Conditioning.
When I first started working there the number 1 phone ANYWHERE was the blackberry. Teaching people how to fully close out of applications to avoid battery drain was a daily process. When they fully integrated the quick key to show all running operations, it streamlined this process but everyday we would have to employ this to almost every blackberry customer.
When android rolls around, specifically a few days before the droid launch, the reps are instructed on the use of free Task Killing applications to educate the customer on how to keep their open programs to a minimum. Still to this day they are instructed to download a few apps onto the phone to show it off and it is mandatory that they demo ATK.
There is only a trace amount of actual android no how floating the VzW kiddie pool, you don't really need it to showcase why an android phone is better than a blackberry or different from an iphone. The reps themselves don't need to be trained in every little nuance of how android or kernels or rooting or even how to properly sync information to a gmail account. As pivotal as it is for the user, honestly they need to take it upon themselves to research and learn all that themselves in my opinion.
I hope that you don't hold it against sales reps or vzw customer service for being uninformed on some of the finer points of android, they're just doing their job. Going above and beyond I think would be left to the community of knowledgeable android aficionado's such as the xda-developers group. I myself have learned so much from this website and the people who make it great, constantly informing people to read through here if they want to get the most from their android/wm phones.
tl:dr - Not the reps fault, they're used to blackberrys and winmo 6.1. Also they have to demo multiple apps during the sale, including ATK.

Because you don't need it to do that. Android will do this on its own. The OS multitasks perfectly fine. When resources are needed elsewhere, apps are closed out to do so. Use of a taskmanager does this....
Apps open to run things like sync, collect/send data, determine need for updates, location services, etc. Task manager kills the app prematurely.. app sees that it still needs to do this process and restarts itself. Task manager repeats. App repeats... task manager repeats...... see where im going here? THIS will indeed drain your battery and hog RAM. As anyone with a fair amount of OS knowledge knows-it takes more cpu to start an app than it does to have it running as a background process.

kinda a just-for-fun story. I am really proud of my cappy after that~~~
So I was talking to my friend using an App called QQ, which is quite similar to ICQ or MSN, and is very famous in China.
And it turns out that she kept getting online and then offline and then online again...
And I asked 'what's wrong with u',
and she said "I have to quit QQ to use another App"
And I:"don't u have multitask in Iphone4???"
and she:"yeah!! It actually notifies me when a message comes, but it shows to u that I was offline until I reply to u............"
And at that point, GPS seems no big deal to me, cappy rocks~~~
I have a Iphone 3GS at the moment and yes, the "multitasking" (if you can call it that) sucks.
Its not really multitasking its more of a quick bar to apps stored in memory, so they load faster and thats its.
iOS4 multitasking is a joke. but considering how long it took apple to offer MMS, that comes as no surprise
when i had my jailbroken 3GS, i used proswitcher + backgrounder for *real* multitasking, which worked very well. if your friend's iphone is jailbroken, you should suggest those apps. she will be your best friend
Iphone multitasking is lame compared to the iphone. Her app, however, was poorly written if it showed her as offline when she closed it. There are plenty of instant messaging apps that worked seamlessly even on iOS 3.
i used to own a 3gs for a year an a half, and i was so let down by that multitask they offer. number one, it takes forever to kill all the apps you open. number 2, if you want any convenience, you HAVE to jail break for sbsettings. now, its not as easy or quick to jail break any longer, cause of the constant updates ever since they try to move towards the whole ios 4.. there are in between updates that are quite annoying. so far, I don't see any use for the iphone. its just another phone, if you can call it that (such bad call quality, makes a "free" phone that you get for signing up a contract look good.). nonetheless, i suggest getting those "all in one" social network apps, like Beejive. it keeps you logged in even if you hit the dreaded Home button.

I'm assuming this is iPhone OS3 you're talking about? iOS 4's multitasking isn't all that different from Android's, actually. The major differences is in Android you get to build your own services that can run in the background, whereas in iOS 4 you have five pre-made services you can register your app with to receive updates and whatnot, or "finish a download" (which you can extend infinitely to maintain an active network connection in the background).
It's janky and not true multitasking, but I understand their reasons. The iPhone targets people that are interested in technology, but generally aren't very tech savvy. I'm not really surprised that Apple doesn't trust their customers to manage their own apps in a more direct way than the task launcher doodad.
My old jailbroken iPhone3G had pretty decent multitasking with SpringBoard and was actually capable of handling 4 to 5 apps at once (despite what steve jobs says about the 3G's ability to do so, not when you can buy the new iteration afterall). iPhone 4's stock multitasking is terrible in comparison. Having used my GFs time after time, I still dont entirely have a handle on it, extremely unintuitive.
It would be interesting to see if QQ's offline/online issue can be fixed by jailbreaking and using SpringBoard as its multitasking platform. It seems as though it treated the open apps as simply being open, but not seen. But im sure apples way of doing it allows only for a pared down open-in-multitasking instances to be burning the background resources.

Im not sure if this has been discussed before as I did search but cant find anything.
Today I called T-Mobile for the first time to complaint that my MMS is not working (known problem for samsung galaxy s 4g) and asking them when is the update available to fix this issue, and My SMS is in and out as well ?
I didnt tell him what program I have/downloaded on the phone since he didnt ask.
I get transfered straight to higher (level 2) technical support. He said dont touch the phone while he was checking something and the phone will reboot. The phone did reboot and the SMS get fixed.
This is what Alarmed me so much.
The tech support ( I wont publish his name here) know exactly what software I have on the phone (downloaded from the market), what is currently running, he also know I have advance task manager among other thing.
He even knew my Gmail address I use on the phone and google market account.
How is this possible ?
Is there anyway I can block this because I dont like when T-mobile snooping on my phone. If they can see the apps I downloaded on my phone and know my gmail address, know what apps currently running, Can they also access my email through my phone ?
Honestly never heard of that. Thats wild!

No matter what phone you have, T-Mobile (and I'd assume AT&T) can find out what phone you are using, even if it's not a T-Mobile branded phone.
I wouldn't worry, they aren't gonna do some stupid **** with that, they just did that to repair your phone. I honestly doubt they'd risk losing a customer over a little thing like that.
Google is the one you should be worried about. They know where your phone is, exactly to the millimeter (I don't think that really works with the Vibrant though. xD).
u called to get your phone fixed didnt you? and they did just that didnt they? if you are so worried about your privacy i got a old motorola razr sitting in my closet, ill gladly trade your sgs4
Google is the devil, and will take over the planet, and join steve jobs. Put on your tin foil hats!
To further this, its done through rescue me. It is built into the kernel. On the Vibrant froyo leaks i have leaked out it is there also. We just remove the Rescue Me app.
I can remove the drivers and credentials from the kernel if people are that concerned about it. I wouldnt be though.

I'm a computer repair tech. One of the first questions I'm going to ask is have you installed any new hardware or software? Most of the time I've found out software was the root problem of the issue. Not always, just Most of the time. So, it doesn't supprise me that he can see what is installed on your phone. It gives him a idea of what the problem can be. I would be more concerned what NSA or space aliens are doing with your phone.

The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets. Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we've heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you've got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn't get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty of awkwardness. Let us know if you fare better -- you'll find a Thunderbolt-specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals.
http://blogs.skype.com/en/2011/06/smile_skype_for_android_with_v.html
Figured I would drop this in here if anyone has some know how and wants to look into it to see if there is anyway for us to have this on our phone. Doubt it though considering it requires 2.3 which seems to be the standard for google video chat and stuff, but hey, its worth a shot!!!
Found some more info. Tested and still didn't work but apparently on our device but confirmed on the SGS2. Here is the link for the guy who got it working.

Yeah, one of Google's big thing at IO was that they wanted to eliminate the fragmentation, yet I haven't seen anything to indicate they're taking steps to achieve this.
Unfortunately it's one big advantage Apple has... they take a hard line position that the carrier doesn't touch the OS software, nor prevent the deployment of the updates. Not sure why Google is such a wuss when it comes to holding the carriers accountable for the timely delivery of their updates. AT&T says it's because they have to ensure a quality user experience, but comon, what AT&T customer actually believes that crap? LOL

I work for AT&T and I can tell you that we (the pions in the store) think its crap too. The lockdowns, the non-market app bs, etc. I do hope google puts its BIG foot down one day and steps up to plate on this issue.

hey, this is gonna sound like a really dumb question and way off topic but can you tell me how your notified when someone posts. I have always been one to read through forums daily but have never gotten too good at participating, as you might tell as I have been a member for 3 years and have very little posts. I personally have to try and remember the threads I participated in and see if someone replied. This seems very redundant but I don't see a better way to be notified. Thanks in advance
Is anyone's phone dying quickly after installing this. I even tried signing out and closing the app but my phone legit drains 10% an hour on standby. So I deleted the app. Now my wifi is turning on and off and can't keep a constant connection. Help?

I personally have seen no change since installing it, as for the wifi thing are you rooted and running any rom of sort of just stock? I have seen some wifi issues with the roms. Don't know if maybe the app sparked the problem or what but maybe you can backup your apps and reinstall. Good luck

LOL

The only true advantage that Apple has over Android is that they only more or less support one device. Android is spread amongst how many different devices? It's easy to put out lackluster updates to a single device, but putting out updates to 20+ different devices isn't so easy.
how are you guys even getting it to install? is it actually working?
yes please, can any one confirm that the video call on Skype is working on the infuse?
regards
no it is not working. installing the custom apk does give you the video call option, but if you press it, it goes into landscape to prepare for video call and then it does nothing. gingerbread is needed since it uses the frontfacing camera api.

Yes, my phone's battery started draining in about two hours after installing Skype, so I uninstalled and things are better again now.
Even if Skype supports video on the Infuse, I don't think I will start using it unless they address the battery usage.

apparently theres been some success with modding skype for froyo. anybody want to try out some of these builds?
I hope in not posting in the wrong part of this forum but I was freaked out today at the tmobile store. It all starts last night when I goggle map searched "bar and grill" and later searched on browser "screen names" looking for screen name ideas. So, this morning my wife and I go to tmobile to pay our bill. The clerk in an attempt to talk to my wife says "so did you find a good screen name last night? " She had no idea what he was talking about. Then he asks "how was the bar and grill? " I was immediately angry. I know there was recent proof carriers collect our data, but not only does tmobile collect logs of most things we do on our phones, the make it available to any ass working in a tmobile store! I would v believed it was that bad without seeing it for myself. I told him to give me a print out of that info he was reading but he refused. So now I'm on an AOSP BUILD. The rom I was using before was weapon btw. Why is spyware in custom roms? Does anyone work at tmobile that can confirm this? Are AOSP builds the only way to combat this? I can't believe any asshole at a tmobile store can just punch in a number and see everything we do on our phones!
I'd love to know what you guys think. Similar experiences?
Wow, I'm shocked. I know they collect data but it shouldn't be available to anyone. What rom are you using?

I'm going to speak to an attorney friend of mine but i do believe that is extremely illegal.
Did your rep had your phone? Cause if he did, he could have been going through the search history. Either way he shouldn't be going through them.
Dang, that's real bs. I would definately seek legal action.
Well, I would assume all carriers log all data accessed (via mobile data connection at least) to supply to the gov't for profiling and legal purposes. But allowing Joe Schmoe at the store access to it is definitely a violation of your privacy. The contract probably allows them to monitor your activity but that's a bit of an overshare if you ask me.
Well you can always get check and or get rid of the Carrier IQ thing that tracks your information.
You need a rooted phone to do so and then go here to download the app because it is not on the android market.

*Note: do a backup of your phone before you do this just incase. I haven't checked if its on our phones just yet but more than likely it probably is.
**Update: Having trouble with the app on my g2x with stock rom/faux froyo kernel.05. It keeps giving an "Error copying Busybox" so the App won't update to the pro version that you need. Waiting for Dev response

This story is BS. Store employees do not have access to that kind of data. Almost no one within T-Mobile could get anywhere near that kind of data even if they did record any of it. Also, none of the official G2x firmwares carry CIQ.

Regular Sales Reps or even Mgrs shouldn't have any access to that kind of information. None of the systems they use can dig that deep. They can see details about minutes, texts and your bill items, etc. but thats about the extent of it. Especially through CAM, Watson or Quickview. Although I would be surprised if the network engineers couldn't get that data if they were high up enough. The carrier iq thing isn't much of a surprise to me.
Weapon is based on the stock 2.3.3 rom so the OP is plausible, not probable, but certainly not busted. It has just been enhanced but most of it is stock TMO rom.
But I do think the OP is pure BS. That type of data would not be available at the store level and an employee who revealed such info would be subject to immediate termination.

I have about 10 days left to decide if I going to keep or return the S6. My main concern is the battery. I'm retired and I have a landline so I probably don't use my phone as much as most people here but I travel often and don't want to worry about running out of juice. So if the S6 doesn't pan out I'm leaving the darkside for an iPhone.

It may not be inherently an issue with Android, but the issues Android has on verizon are not present on Apple devices.
When Apple agreed to place the iPhone on VZW, Verizon had to give them sole control of their software. The only thing VZW does is the baseband and radio for their networks. Everything else is in Apple's sole control. There is no verizon bloatware, VZW can NOT add or remove any software or features, ie...Samsung pay....
I believe that many of the issues that Android devices suffer from stem directly from verizon putting their noses where they don't belong.
It's taken years for me to get to this point. I've owned numerous Android phones from all of the manufacturers, and it's truly been an enjoyable ride. But the increasingly difficult security coupled with vzw's encroachment into the software side of the house has driven me to get fed up with it all. I just want a phone that works....that doesn't suffer from horrible memory leaks, that has decent battery life, that isn't plagued with cell standby issues, and evidently going to the iPhone is the only reliable way to do that.
I like the S6. But it does have it's issues. The main one for me is battery life. This could be because they decided to shrink the battery down or from software flaws...ie cell standby, memory management, or bluetooth being enabled never allows the phone to go into deep sleep (this is a new one I started experiencing a few weeks ago). Plain and simple....I have owned the S6 since launch day and the battery life is terrible. I have yet to get through a half a day without needing to charge and that is just unacceptable to me. My fiance has had her iphone 6s since the 24th and has only charged it twice. With 3-4 hr on screen time a day and pandora running for about an hour a day.

This is very true. I love Android, but I am sick of having to jump through holes just to get it to be clean. I hate how Verizon butchers everything and Samsung doesn't have the balls to stand up to them. Apple is able to do that. I have no hatred against Android nor iOS. I go by features that fit my requirements and the S6 has the best - Primary being the camera. However, I've noticed my photos have been blurry and the S6 can't decide what to do in low-light and doesn't use flash, which forces me to have people re-pose what should have been candid. I do believe the iPhone 6s will have the better camera (or at least he software to use the camera) and I would like to jump to it. It's just, the lack of IR, private mode (obviously just software), and battery life/fast charging, are big killers for me. Given the smaller battery and worse battery life, charging the damn thing is so slow. At least implement a fast charging feature and I can overlook my laziness of looking for my TV remote and privacy mode.

You do realize that Android / VZW do the exact same thing right? There is nothing that Android offers that Apple doesn't that's actually useful to me...I like widgets and such but I don't need them. Oh you mean like the people who post about Apple in the GS6 forum just for attention? Just switch and leave. Change your iphone launcher or sideload an app. Maybe use NFC to initiate a macro. Activate your notification light with different colors for different apps... the list is endless. I'm not sure what you are looking for.

My post was meant for those users (who btw outnumber you in this thread) that may be in similar situations or experiences.
Changing my launcher? I don't even do that on android devices....too many bugs most of the time. Use NFC to initiate a Macro? I've done that, and it can make things a little more convenient. But I would rather use it to pay at the store. Something you can't do with the S6 because verizon has the android companies by the balls and just says "we aren't going to allow you have that feature" ...changing led colors? Really? Why even mention that?

That's what I'm saying. I've been doing it for so long it's just become second nature. I miss the OG Droid....that was a tinkerers dream. After years of doing it though, I'd rather spend the time doing things that are more fun. In other words, I don't care about customization options or 3rd party apps anymore. I just want a phone that actually works and works well out of the box, not needing any intervention on my part other than picking it up and turning it on.
This most recent issue with my bluetooth not allowing my phone to sleep was the straw that broke the camels back for me. Could I fix the problem? Probably....do I want to devote the time to it? Nope....not anymore.

Until recently you would have been hard pressed to find a bigger advocate for Android than me. There were always two features that kept me with Samsung...a removable battery and expandable storage. But when you remove those two features and basically make an iPhone clone you are going to lose on the software front. Especially when your hobbled by VZW and all the crap that they do to mess up a pretty good product.

There both good operating systems it doesn't have to be one or the other yea a nexus is fun to flash the **** out of it but obviously Apple doing something right too it's more about Verizons locked bootloaders.
