kinda a just-for-fun story. I am really proud of my cappy after that~~~
So I was talking to my friend using an App called QQ, which is quite similar to ICQ or MSN, and is very famous in China.
And it turns out that she kept getting online and then offline and then online again...
And I asked 'what's wrong with u',
and she said "I have to quit QQ to use another App"
And I:"don't u have multitask in Iphone4???"
and she:"yeah!! It actually notifies me when a message comes, but it shows to u that I was offline until I reply to u............"
And at that point, GPS seems no big deal to me, cappy rocks~~~
I have a Iphone 3GS at the moment and yes, the "multitasking" (if you can call it that) sucks.
Its not really multitasking its more of a quick bar to apps stored in memory, so they load faster and thats its.
iOS4 multitasking is a joke. but considering how long it took apple to offer MMS, that comes as no surprise
when i had my jailbroken 3GS, i used proswitcher + backgrounder for *real* multitasking, which worked very well. if your friend's iphone is jailbroken, you should suggest those apps. she will be your best friend
Iphone multitasking is lame compared to the iphone. Her app, however, was poorly written if it showed her as offline when she closed it. There are plenty of instant messaging apps that worked seamlessly even on iOS 3.
i used to own a 3gs for a year an a half, and i was so let down by that multitask they offer. number one, it takes forever to kill all the apps you open. number 2, if you want any convenience, you HAVE to jail break for sbsettings. now, its not as easy or quick to jail break any longer, cause of the constant updates ever since they try to move towards the whole ios 4.. there are in between updates that are quite annoying. so far, I don't see any use for the iphone. its just another phone, if you can call it that (such bad call quality, makes a "free" phone that you get for signing up a contract look good.). nonetheless, i suggest getting those "all in one" social network apps, like Beejive. it keeps you logged in even if you hit the dreaded Home button.
Please dont call it a "Cappy" sounds extremely childish/gay.

I'm assuming this is iPhone OS3 you're talking about? iOS 4's multitasking isn't all that different from Android's, actually. The major differences is in Android you get to build your own services that can run in the background, whereas in iOS 4 you have five pre-made services you can register your app with to receive updates and whatnot, or "finish a download" (which you can extend infinitely to maintain an active network connection in the background).
It's janky and not true multitasking, but I understand their reasons. The iPhone targets people that are interested in technology, but generally aren't very tech savvy. I'm not really surprised that Apple doesn't trust their customers to manage their own apps in a more direct way than the task launcher doodad.
My old jailbroken iPhone3G had pretty decent multitasking with SpringBoard and was actually capable of handling 4 to 5 apps at once (despite what steve jobs says about the 3G's ability to do so, not when you can buy the new iteration afterall). iPhone 4's stock multitasking is terrible in comparison. Having used my GFs time after time, I still dont entirely have a handle on it, extremely unintuitive.
It would be interesting to see if QQ's offline/online issue can be fixed by jailbreaking and using SpringBoard as its multitasking platform. It seems as though it treated the open apps as simply being open, but not seen. But im sure apples way of doing it allows only for a pared down open-in-multitasking instances to be burning the background resources.

I had a similar combo ( backgrounder & circuitous) and it worked quite well. Although, android's app memory management is much better given that its baked in from the ground up.

You may have seen my whining posts about the things that soured my captivate experience, and a big one was for some absurd reason (probably to eat up more data minutes) they made it show ****ty looking videos in the youtube player unless you navigate through a bunch of menus to make them HQ. See that way, you use more data.
Anyway, at least one thing is better because I put a youtube player from the Evo on there and it is a little bit better. Still not perfect because the stupid thing still shows low quality at first, but at least in this youtube there is a single HQ button on the player by the fast forward one touch and you've got HQ.
So I'll take that tiny victory, however shallow, over AT&T and Samsungs herculean efforts to f- up the nice chips, speaker, and screen on this device. Note I didn't say hardware because I'm not a fan of the case overall.
the player defaults to lower quality if youre not connected to wifi so you use less data and it loads quicker. this would be useful to people who have the 200 mb data plan. IIRC it was the same when i had an iphone 3g a couple years ago.

"a bunch of menus"? You tap the menu button, hit more, then HQ. It takes less than a second. I usually have it hit before the low-quality version is even buffered. Three taps is more than one, but it's not like they were asking you to do analytic geometry. Maybe I don't care because my fingers are fast, or because I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan.
As for their herculean efforts, if you don't use the AT&T/Samsung stuff, you don't notice any of it once you've rooted and enabled sideloading. At least I don't.
Mine defaults to high quality. Whenever I hit menu -> more the option in there always says "watch in low quality". I've checked several times because I was thinking the video looked pretty bad, but then I realized it was already in high quality mode.
My old HTC phone used to pick the quality based on available bandwidth. This type of functionality doesn't seem like it should be beyond google and samsung with their latest and greatest phone lol. Google owns youtube for god's sake.
this sounds like a troll post...

What does sideloading do and how do I enable it. I too have an unlimited plan so I just want the best performance. I'm new to Android phones. I use to be a Nokia fan but got tired of waiting for the N8 or something nice from Nokia.
Not to Hi-jack this post but I'm open to any suggestions to make my Captivate a better user experience. So far I'm loving it !!

There are, very nearly literally, a million threads on sideloading here. It means the ability to load apps not found in the Market--a feature AT&T disabled by default, without the ability to switch it in settings. Search for it, and you'll find how to enable it. Once it's enabled, you have the only real handicap AT&T put on the phone out of the way.

I still notice the dialer. Isn't that still Samsung? It sucks compared to the Aria dialer.
You'd need to have actually used a sense device for a while to know what I mean, it's all about the cool predictive algorithm htc used, whereas the dialer on the captivate is no better than on my old Tilt (although a little faster, thank goodness, and I do appreciate the huge buttons)
Don't get me wrong, there are 5 good things about the captivate: The screen, the screen, the screen, the screen, and the speaker. And those 5 are enough to keep me interested.

I thought I read winmo has some kind of indentifier? Is this true? IF not are there any 8mp wp7 phones ?
Let the flamming begin my skin is made of asbestos!
I'd be interested in trying this out too. There was a project to create on on another Android Device, I just can't remember which one.
My grandparents always had this saying: **** in one hand and wish in the other. See which fills up faster.
I still to this day have no clue what that means but I feel like it applies here.
Just funning. This would be something I'd want too but I believe it's near impossible without a companion device on that OS a la HD2/EVO/HD7. That's why the HD2 can dual-boot all those OSes.

The closest your gonna get for now is the Launcher 7 app. Its free from the market.
Unfortunately (Or fortunately imo), this is likely never going to happen. It's just not possible with the extra security that MS has employed, and it would in all honesty be a waste of time. There isn't anything WM7 can do that Android can't. (AFAIK.)
Yea it would be definitely unique for them to make that possible...sort of like how they're trying to port android to the HD7...this could be a sort of new age HD2 LOL...you know without Wm of course
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Ive also read security is tough. they went the extra mile and there are a few hardware signatures.
I would be interested in seeing this happen for an N1 or G2x simply out of curiousity because i dont see myself ever leaving android let alone to buy a windows phone. a port would allow me to try it out for a while ( i think i know 1 person that has a WP7 ) lol
Id be curious to see how well it integrates to the PC and XBOX 360. ever since the windows smartphone became an Idea they killed the ability to see my android on the xbox which is a shame.

Windows mobile 7 can multitask WAY better than Android. Try streaming audio or video in one window then open another and surf while trying to listen to the streaming audio/video in the first browser window that was active. On Android the audio/video streaming will cease, on Windows 7 you can browse on the newly opened window while the audio/video streaming from the first window will still be active and playing in the background for you to listen to.
Also, with all my reading and researching on other android forums and devices, it seems Android as an operating system is a huge battery drainer even when you're not activley using the handset/device. Windows mobile 7 won't have a horrible battery drain like Android when just on standby. My assumption on this is that google really wants to "listen" in on you, after all they are part of this "big brother" movement.

Agreed, I can't imagine any devs putting in the HUGE effort it would take to port WP7 to this device given the lack of demand for such a port (most people who want WP7 buy a phone with WP7). That said, it would be a great technical accomplishment and just plain cool.
my whole thing is (and heres where I debunk the whole android is superior myth)
is im a media guy: internet music videos etc. And im sorry but android SUCKS and FAILS massively with that. and of course theres the whole stupid file management thing(why is there not a native file explorer like windows?).
and then the biggest android fail: web browsing.
it just sucks on android. I mean its awful. WHy is the native browser so... crappy? I feel its bs that i have to "get an app for that" when it seems to me it should be part of the native OS. I know...its a phone. But whotf uses "mobile version" websites? what is this symbian? And why has no one made an ap for the ua debug ? I want to open my browser and go to ANY website I want in FULL desktop view. JUST LIKE WINDOWS. WITHOUT having to type in "aboutdebug" go to settings etc... really getting old
Skyfires ok...but... some websites(like my bank ) dont work. ANd pay for video??? sigh. at least they have a UA psuedo ap at the top.
and again poor media structure...No music or video looping...the list goes on.
MAybe you guys have suggestions. I also HATE that all my media shows up in gallery. grrr ...gallery blows. I dont want to "hide" my files I just want to seperate them and not have them all open up in "gallery".
SO yes windows phones DO have some advanteges over android. Too bad windows phones suck at everything else.
MS kills me when they advertise wp7 has "thousands" of apps. its like when some loacl band compares them selves to a bigger badn" we have hundreds of fans"...k.
back to my rant ....WHy does android have the UA set this anyways its totally fkn (insert deragatory tasteless term here for all you pc bishes).

Funny how every one can say the f word and all kind of swearing on this forum, but the minute i use the word gay someone has to whine about it. WHy dont you look up the original context of the term ghey and how its NOT a deragatory term. SOme people got to much time on their hands. Man up will ya?
for the file explorer there are plenty of free great apps.
for the browser Its not as great as my desktop but i use it often and don't have any issues. the mobile version of websites is becoming more common and when the web admin does a good job the mobile specific version is laid out better. for example sun-trust mobile. I don't even miss having an app the mobile site is so well laid out
when I need a desktop version in CM7 i just select "change user agent" under settings. if you don't like that there is always Firefox which isnt perfect but i love the syncing favs/passwords with desktop.
I will however agree with the lack of "pizzaz and wow" with media. and i REALLY agree with you on the featureless gallery and not being able to better organize it.
Just remember the whole point in android isn't to have everything set up just the way YOU like it right away. not everyone likes the same thing. the beauty in android is if you don't like it you can easily change it.
think of it this way.. the Iphone is a great phone for many people. but if you don't like the way something works or don't like Itunes you are pretty much S.O.L
once you get everything set and dialed in you wont ever want to part with your android and most other phone users are jealous
that being said.. again i really do agree with you and there needs to be some work done with the way the phone deals with media and storage.

When you came from iOS then switch to Android you are going to miss iOS because you are use to it, I almost returned this infuse 4g, but I gave it a shot, when you learn to use this thing it gets better and better every single day, customization is like never ending, when you press a link you have a choice which browser to choose, when you want to call, you can choose to use your minutes or use your data using google voice, and more Dev team case speed the OS it self, + more appetite to choose from and loving Amazon giving a way a paid apparently for free everyday, 4'5 screen yes browsing is a breeze remember 80% of using your smartphone is for browsing yahoo.

I agree. I was a longtime iphone user who finally made the switch to android with the Infuse. At first I was missing certain aspects of my jailbroken iPhone 4, but it took less than a week until I was ready to sell it. I love the 4.5" screen. There is really only two things I miss about my iphone. The text with the retina display was amazing and if I had that on my 4.5" screen I would be in heaven. I also like the way iOS formats emails a lot better. Emails on the infuse are just a lot harder to view as u have to pan around them. I have tried a couple alternate email clients, but still haven't found one I care for.

One App I do miss on my iPhone is tone fx . It allowed you to easily juggle ringtones and notification sounds.

I made the switch as well and don't think that I will ever look back. Regardless of what ios has to offer in the future I believe that android is just a better platform.

Ya the ability to change notification sound out of the box is nice compared to ios but I really like the juggling especially for the ringtones. I used to have a bunch of 80's sitcom themes songs set to juggle for every call. Does any body know of a good App to do this? I tried a couple of them but niether worked very well.

My last phone was a ipjone 3g. It's not a comprable phone, but just the OS alone has been enough to make me happy. With the added speed upgrade, it blows the iphone 3g out of the water.
Got my Infuse and iPhone 4 sittin here. Ive tried the Android switch several times and failed. Going to give the Infuse its fair shake though. Hoping for the best!

I agree, I went from iPhone 4 to Android. The only thing I would like to see is better battery life and build quality out of the Android phone line. It always seems like my iPhone lasted forever, and was so rugged, and Android phones feel so plasticy and cheap, and the battery goes soooo fast.
With that said, iOS is like going back in time when using after Android. Sure Android has it's issues, but remember it's only 2 years young, so it's to be expected. I love things like how it adds facebook feeds to a user contact card, and little things like turning the phone upside down to mute a call. Really stuff that just works... it's great.
Welcome from another iPhone 4 convert, hehe

I agree better battery life I can over with that. One thing I hate with infuse takes 3-4hrs to charge on stock charger, I'm using 1amp charger now and still just a little bit under 3hrs. Hope I can find a 1hr fast charger. I bought an extra battery and deskcharger hope it solve my issue, I always stream Justin.TV movies lol
Turning upside down really muted the call? Haven't tried that. Do I need another app for that? Wow I keep discovering new apps. I'll try that. Like Chumly always say AWESOME.
Any link for more info like this. I'm like ¹ week on android so I'm learning.

HAHA, you're funny and your post cracked me up with each sentence. I love it!
When a call comes in, flip the phone over onto it's face-down, and the phone will stop ringing. You'll also notice that if the phone is ringing and you pick it up to see who it is, it detects it's being fondled and turns down the ringer since you obviously know you have a call at that point. There's also a purse mode, so if you have it in a purse or pocket, it knows, and will crank up the ringer on it's own.
I too continue to discover cool stuff.... there's really no central repository for "cool stuff" but rather a bunch of different things around the net you can search for that'll give some cool tips and tricks. Android is fast evolving, so each tick they come out with gives a few more cool features. I bought this phone along with 2 friends, and I'm always hearing "did you see it can do this..." so as they find things they let me know. It's amazing how much they packed into an OS... makes iOS seem primitive, at best, hehe.
Chumley wouldn't be a good fit for a smartphone, he loves fried chicken and the screen would look like it'd gotten deep fried, hehe. I've never seen someone actually use a Chumley reference on here.... kudos! hehe
I went from an iPhone 4 to a Motorola Atrix for a little over a month. Couldn't stand Motoblur so I went back to an iPhone 4. I had a Captivate but didn't like a few things about it. I sold my iPhone 4 for $450 and bought my Infuse of some guy on Craigslist for $400.
I'm loving my Infuse so far, the size has really grown on me. I don't think I can ever get a phone under 4" again. Email sucks on Android if using email other than Gmail, but there are so many things that I enjoy on my Infuse more!

Congrats on the migration. It's funny how many people did the same as you, went Atrix because of the marketing hype. I have never personally used it, but I haven't been a Motorola fan since they killed the quality of production after StarTac.
i too agree the size is amazing. I always said anything more than 4" would be too big but now that I have a 4.5" it really is nice. I find that I text\web browse 95% of the time, and rarely use the phone, so the screen size is the #1 feature.
Regarding mail, I had the same sentiments as you, but quickly realized I was wrong. The phone has activesync built in, so first thing I did was delete the gMail client and use the mail app. You'll need an email that supports it (gmail does using exchange server "m.google.com"), or there's a plethora of other non-gmail providers that do it as well. I used to use GoDaddy's Secureserver.net hosted email, but they charge 30.00 a year for hosted IMAP, and $50 a year for activesync, and to me that's just not worth the cost. So I switched all of my domains over to Google Apps. They host your email (you pay $10 a year for the domain to godaddy) then google hosts the activesync email server, and the best part is it's FREE. It's far better than my iPhone mail experience, you just have to have a little know how to set it up, modify MX records, but google's help section makes it super easy to feel your way through it.
Best of luck.

Well i have a Google Voice tied to my phone, that i use for my work line. I also have my work email tied to my phone. I also use Springpad for daily task and it syncs with my computer. I use Google docs to keep important files at my finger tips. the AD-HOC tethering is nice so i can have wireless access to my catalogs from anywhere on a table or laptop... i use mine more for business then i ever thought about with my blackberry.
stream music to my phone from my computer without having to put any music files on my SD card, tethering, wifi/wifi calling, youtube videos, flash for camera, "4G" speeds, and integrated email. didnt have any of these useful features on my previous sidekick 08 lol
Almost anything you can do with a computer or laptop I can do with my phone except its more convenient cause it fits in my pocket doesn't need to be connected to wifi and takes pictures and video so I think I would prefer my intelligent phone over my laptop anyday but of course the desktop wins cause it can run the games my Xbox360 can and it helps make things for my device lol
I think we're just one level behind where its total convenience. Right now it seems like voice recognition isn't too great outside of text messaging. I'm sure Android has a lot more to bring to the table though.

we'll see a legitimate siri clone very soon, but even so, I regularly use the voice command- "navigate to __" to gps my way around miami. more than anything, on a personal level, my phone has made my life so much easier regarding events. My phone calendar is the only reason I'm ever where I'm supposed to be.
i think most people with smartphones who see no use in them just haven't made the effort to see how they can improve their lives. I'm not saying they are for everyone, but I truly believe they can be. You just need to see how and why.

Back on topic, considering that this is my first smartphone, I find it useful, but I'm probably old school compared to many here and I've managed to live this long without a smartphone. I finally got on board not because I care to downsize my computing devices, but because I wanted a GPS-enabled device for navigation for the few times I need it. Also, a QWERTY keyboard in conjunction with Swype is a massive improvement over an alphanumeric keypad for composing texts or simply taking notes. That said, I still prefer using my desktop over my laptop over my phone, and the phone will never be a good interface for me to perform heavy text composition.
To me, what's nice is that the apps I did rarely use on my dumbphone like the calendar and calculator are much more spacious and intuitive to use now to the point where I'm willing to use them more often. It's also nice to have a specialized flashlight app and the ability to easily check my email and the weather. I really like the voice dictation and Swype inputs as well.
Also, yes, it is much harder to distract yourself with a dumbphone if should you find yourself stuck somewhere with someone/something to wait on and nothing to do. Ever since I flashed VU, I've spent more time scrolling the home screens and looking at the animations than anything else. I could easily waste time with this thing even without wireless data or Wi-Fi.

had a very similar conversation with the House Boss shortly after we got our first Android phones, (got snookered with the Samsung Behold2, almost made us go back to regular phones) once we got the MT3G-S we both fell in love with our phones (even though I jumped on the MT4G, needed more power and screen). she loves the keyboard for typing her texts and browsing web, the fact she now has Youtube on the go for watching funny vids and vids of our nieces and nephews, the great calender, games and with Pandora and her SD card no more need for her iPod.
I combine my MT4G and my Acer Iconia A500 Tablet to make my life way easier and much much less cluttered in my 18-wheeler between GPS, calender, notepad/office programs helping me keep everything inline for work and Hulu, Netflix and the games helping entertain me when I'm stuck somewhere and getting bored, I have saved money and was able to shave weight off the crap I carry in the truck allowing more cargo (means more money). Don't really know how I did this for as long as I did before.
i'm jumping ship on android after many years and trading my atrix 2 in for one of the 2 for-mentioned. i'm leaning more towards the focus s since i do not like screen protectors and the focus s has GG.
however, my concern is the navigation. i know there's good navi apps on the market, but, they are $50! lol, and still don't look as good as google navigation.
does anyone know what MS has as far as features planned for tango or apollo? will bing maps ever be updated to more friendly navigation set?
also, google talk, how well does it work on wp7? gtalk is very important since it's the only way i communicate with my wife and friends (well, as far as chat/text goes, lol).

there is a five dollar turn by turn app that is actually quite good!
Just fyi
Also bing works for free, and will indicate when you make a wrong turn + say the direction if you tap the screen.
I bought navigon. I would have to say it's way better then google.
Turn by turn however is good. The online version is low cost but the offline version is 33.00 which at that amount you might as well by navigon and get 3d offline.

There is no native Google Talk client available for Windows Phone 7, but you do have options like IM+. IM+ actually works rather well and supports multiple IM services, even if it doesn't look as Metro as most apps do.
