Improved Youtube with HQ - Captivate General

You may have seen my whining posts about the things that soured my captivate experience, and a big one was for some absurd reason (probably to eat up more data minutes) they made it show ****ty looking videos in the youtube player unless you navigate through a bunch of menus to make them HQ. See that way, you use more data.
Anyway, at least one thing is better because I put a youtube player from the Evo on there and it is a little bit better. Still not perfect because the stupid thing still shows low quality at first, but at least in this youtube there is a single HQ button on the player by the fast forward one touch and you've got HQ.
So I'll take that tiny victory, however shallow, over AT&T and Samsungs herculean efforts to f- up the nice chips, speaker, and screen on this device. Note I didn't say hardware because I'm not a fan of the case overall.

the player defaults to lower quality if youre not connected to wifi so you use less data and it loads quicker. this would be useful to people who have the 200 mb data plan. IIRC it was the same when i had an iphone 3g a couple years ago.

"a bunch of menus"? You tap the menu button, hit more, then HQ. It takes less than a second. I usually have it hit before the low-quality version is even buffered. Three taps is more than one, but it's not like they were asking you to do analytic geometry. Maybe I don't care because my fingers are fast, or because I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan.
As for their herculean efforts, if you don't use the AT&T/Samsung stuff, you don't notice any of it once you've rooted and enabled sideloading. At least I don't.

Mine defaults to high quality. Whenever I hit menu -> more the option in there always says "watch in low quality". I've checked several times because I was thinking the video looked pretty bad, but then I realized it was already in high quality mode.

My old HTC phone used to pick the quality based on available bandwidth. This type of functionality doesn't seem like it should be beyond google and samsung with their latest and greatest phone lol. Google owns youtube for god's sake.

this sounds like a troll post...
Didn't realize there were wars between android phones

What does sideloading do and how do I enable it. I too have an unlimited plan so I just want the best performance. I'm new to Android phones. I use to be a Nokia fan but got tired of waiting for the N8 or something nice from Nokia.
Not to Hi-jack this post but I'm open to any suggestions to make my Captivate a better user experience. So far I'm loving it !!

There are, very nearly literally, a million threads on sideloading here. It means the ability to load apps not found in the Market--a feature AT&T disabled by default, without the ability to switch it in settings. Search for it, and you'll find how to enable it. Once it's enabled, you have the only real handicap AT&T put on the phone out of the way.

I still notice the dialer. Isn't that still Samsung? It sucks compared to the Aria dialer.
You'd need to have actually used a sense device for a while to know what I mean, it's all about the cool predictive algorithm htc used, whereas the dialer on the captivate is no better than on my old Tilt (although a little faster, thank goodness, and I do appreciate the huge buttons)
Don't get me wrong, there are 5 good things about the captivate: The screen, the screen, the screen, the screen, and the speaker. And those 5 are enough to keep me interested.

is there a way to trick youtube into thinking your on wifi so that it defaults to HQ.
I know on iphones theres "3g unrestrictor" is there something like that for android?

Iphone’s multitask is so funny~~~

kinda a just-for-fun story. I am really proud of my cappy after that~~~
So I was talking to my friend using an App called QQ, which is quite similar to ICQ or MSN, and is very famous in China.
And it turns out that she kept getting online and then offline and then online again...
And I asked 'what's wrong with u',
and she said "I have to quit QQ to use another App"
And I:"don't u have multitask in Iphone4???"
and she:"yeah!! It actually notifies me when a message comes, but it shows to u that I was offline until I reply to u............"
And at that point, GPS seems no big deal to me, cappy rocks~~~
I have a Iphone 3GS at the moment and yes, the "multitasking" (if you can call it that) sucks.
Its not really multitasking its more of a quick bar to apps stored in memory, so they load faster and thats its.
iOS4 multitasking is a joke. but considering how long it took apple to offer MMS, that comes as no surprise
when i had my jailbroken 3GS, i used proswitcher + backgrounder for *real* multitasking, which worked very well. if your friend's iphone is jailbroken, you should suggest those apps. she will be your best friend
Iphone multitasking is lame compared to the iphone. Her app, however, was poorly written if it showed her as offline when she closed it. There are plenty of instant messaging apps that worked seamlessly even on iOS 3.
i used to own a 3gs for a year an a half, and i was so let down by that multitask they offer. number one, it takes forever to kill all the apps you open. number 2, if you want any convenience, you HAVE to jail break for sbsettings. now, its not as easy or quick to jail break any longer, cause of the constant updates ever since they try to move towards the whole ios 4.. there are in between updates that are quite annoying. so far, I don't see any use for the iphone. its just another phone, if you can call it that (such bad call quality, makes a "free" phone that you get for signing up a contract look good.). nonetheless, i suggest getting those "all in one" social network apps, like Beejive. it keeps you logged in even if you hit the dreaded Home button.
Please dont call it a "Cappy" sounds extremely childish/gay.

I'm assuming this is iPhone OS3 you're talking about? iOS 4's multitasking isn't all that different from Android's, actually. The major differences is in Android you get to build your own services that can run in the background, whereas in iOS 4 you have five pre-made services you can register your app with to receive updates and whatnot, or "finish a download" (which you can extend infinitely to maintain an active network connection in the background).
It's janky and not true multitasking, but I understand their reasons. The iPhone targets people that are interested in technology, but generally aren't very tech savvy. I'm not really surprised that Apple doesn't trust their customers to manage their own apps in a more direct way than the task launcher doodad.
My old jailbroken iPhone3G had pretty decent multitasking with SpringBoard and was actually capable of handling 4 to 5 apps at once (despite what steve jobs says about the 3G's ability to do so, not when you can buy the new iteration afterall). iPhone 4's stock multitasking is terrible in comparison. Having used my GFs time after time, I still dont entirely have a handle on it, extremely unintuitive.
It would be interesting to see if QQ's offline/online issue can be fixed by jailbreaking and using SpringBoard as its multitasking platform. It seems as though it treated the open apps as simply being open, but not seen. But im sure apples way of doing it allows only for a pared down open-in-multitasking instances to be burning the background resources.

I had a similar combo ( backgrounder & circuitous) and it worked quite well. Although, android's app memory management is much better given that its baked in from the ground up.

Skype 2 video available

The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets. Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we've heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you've got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn't get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty of awkwardness. Let us know if you fare better -- you'll find a Thunderbolt-specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals.
http://blogs.skype.com/en/2011/06/smile_skype_for_android_with_v.html
Figured I would drop this in here if anyone has some know how and wants to look into it to see if there is anyway for us to have this on our phone. Doubt it though considering it requires 2.3 which seems to be the standard for google video chat and stuff, but hey, its worth a shot!!!
Found some more info. Tested and still didn't work but apparently on our device but confirmed on the SGS2. Here is the link for the guy who got it working.

Yeah, one of Google's big thing at IO was that they wanted to eliminate the fragmentation, yet I haven't seen anything to indicate they're taking steps to achieve this.
Unfortunately it's one big advantage Apple has... they take a hard line position that the carrier doesn't touch the OS software, nor prevent the deployment of the updates. Not sure why Google is such a wuss when it comes to holding the carriers accountable for the timely delivery of their updates. AT&T says it's because they have to ensure a quality user experience, but comon, what AT&T customer actually believes that crap? LOL

I personally have seen no change since installing it, as for the wifi thing are you rooted and running any rom of sort of just stock? I have seen some wifi issues with the roms. Don't know if maybe the app sparked the problem or what but maybe you can backup your apps and reinstall. Good luck

The only true advantage that Apple has over Android is that they only more or less support one device. Android is spread amongst how many different devices? It's easy to put out lackluster updates to a single device, but putting out updates to 20+ different devices isn't so easy.
how are you guys even getting it to install? is it actually working?
yes please, can any one confirm that the video call on Skype is working on the infuse?

no it is not working. installing the custom apk does give you the video call option, but if you press it, it goes into landscape to prepare for video call and then it does nothing. gingerbread is needed since it uses the frontfacing camera api.

Yes, my phone's battery started draining in about two hours after installing Skype, so I uninstalled and things are better again now.
Even if Skype supports video on the Infuse, I don't think I will start using it unless they address the battery usage.

Well i have a Google Voice tied to my phone, that i use for my work line. I also have my work email tied to my phone. I also use Springpad for daily task and it syncs with my computer. I use Google docs to keep important files at my finger tips. the AD-HOC tethering is nice so i can have wireless access to my catalogs from anywhere on a table or laptop... i use mine more for business then i ever thought about with my blackberry.
stream music to my phone from my computer without having to put any music files on my SD card, tethering, wifi/wifi calling, youtube videos, flash for camera, "4G" speeds, and integrated email. didnt have any of these useful features on my previous sidekick 08 lol
Almost anything you can do with a computer or laptop I can do with my phone except its more convenient cause it fits in my pocket doesn't need to be connected to wifi and takes pictures and video so I think I would prefer my intelligent phone over my laptop anyday but of course the desktop wins cause it can run the games my Xbox360 can and it helps make things for my device lol
I think we're just one level behind where its total convenience. Right now it seems like voice recognition isn't too great outside of text messaging. I'm sure Android has a lot more to bring to the table though.

we'll see a legitimate siri clone very soon, but even so, I regularly use the voice command- "navigate to __" to gps my way around miami. more than anything, on a personal level, my phone has made my life so much easier regarding events. i think most people with smartphones who see no use in them just haven't made the effort to see how they can improve their lives. I'm not saying they are for everyone, but I truly believe they can be. You just need to see how and why.

Back on topic, considering that this is my first smartphone, I find it useful, but I'm probably old school compared to many here and I've managed to live this long without a smartphone. I finally got on board not because I care to downsize my computing devices, but because I wanted a GPS-enabled device for navigation for the few times I need it. Also, a QWERTY keyboard in conjunction with Swype is a massive improvement over an alphanumeric keypad for composing texts or simply taking notes. That said, I still prefer using my desktop over my laptop over my phone, and the phone will never be a good interface for me to perform heavy text composition.
To me, what's nice is that the apps I did rarely use on my dumbphone like the calendar and calculator are much more spacious and intuitive to use now to the point where I'm willing to use them more often. It's also nice to have a specialized flashlight app and the ability to easily check my email and the weather. I really like the voice dictation and Swype inputs as well.
Also, yes, it is much harder to distract yourself with a dumbphone if should you find yourself stuck somewhere with someone/something to wait on and nothing to do. Ever since I flashed VU, I've spent more time scrolling the home screens and looking at the animations than anything else. I could easily waste time with this thing even without wireless data or Wi-Fi.

had a very similar conversation with the House Boss shortly after we got our first Android phones, (got snookered with the Samsung Behold2, almost made us go back to regular phones) once we got the MT3G-S we both fell in love with our phones (even though I jumped on the MT4G, needed more power and screen). she loves the keyboard for typing her texts and browsing web, the fact she now has Youtube on the go for watching funny vids and vids of our nieces and nephews, the great calender, games and with Pandora and her SD card no more need for her iPod.
I combine my MT4G and my Acer Iconia A500 Tablet to make my life way easier and much much less cluttered in my 18-wheeler between GPS, calender, notepad/office programs helping me keep everything inline for work and Hulu, Netflix and the games helping entertain me when I'm stuck somewhere and getting bored, I have saved money and was able to shave weight off the crap I carry in the truck allowing more cargo (means more money). Don't really know how I did this for as long as I did before.

Pro's And Con's Of AT&T One X

Ok i have had my One X for less the 24 hrs. and i love the phone, but there are several issues that i have with it, so i decided since not everyone pre-ordered so everyone that is going to the store know what they are getting into ahead of time....the good and the bad
BTW....This is just preliminary, there are things in this world i do not know.....so i could be wrong or missed something...
So lets start this off with the Cons since there arent that many of them.....
Con's
1. HTC's keyboard is fun to use but its not as feature rich as Swype, and speaking of swype, u can install it and use it but when u restart the phone for any reason, swype comes up but its tiny, in order to fix it u have to disable swype and then re enable it....Doesnt happen with Swift key 3.
2. Wallpaper from the gallery is kinda a *****, because the wallpaper is scrollable u can never set the full picture as your wallpaper, but zedge works just fine, i have tried wallpaper wizard and a couple other apps and its a no go...Disable Picspeed wallpapers is what I use
3. Dropbox, we get free 23GB of data for two years, but with AT&T it doesnt come pre-loaded, what that means is that u have to download it and install it, but the catch is its not like the international One X where dropbox is intagrated into the system, i bring this up because i would like to be able to autosave my pictures from the camera to dropbox, but u can't with the AT&T One X...You have to go into the Dropbox app to enable auto upload of photos
4. This device has 1GB of RAM right?? well why does it only show that i have 672MB of ram??? where the hell is the rest of my RAM??? Could be system used and hidden but idk.....
5. Youtube videos, so we have this beautiful 4.7" HD display but when u play "HD" videos on youtube, guess what, they look like ****, granted it could be im using 4g and not wifi, but seriously my Desire HD youtube videos look better then my One X.....what gives???
6. The front facing camera, it's nice when u have enough light, but other then a good amount of light, it kinda sucks....
7. Google Wallet, So i have this wonderful NFC chip, but guess what right now i can't use it for what it's intended for...."Device/Carrier not supported"...so u can play with those stupid little tags but u cant pay for anything with ur phone yet....but it is coming soon...
8. Bloatware, Yes AT&T like all carriers throw their CRAP on our phones, you want an example, how about Yellowpages, Tune-In radio, MOG, etc., "HTC built for U" then why in the hell can i not remove stupid, pointless apps off my phone??? They can be disabled in app management
9. LTE, yes its great to have for the future and if you have LTE, then good for u, use it and enjoy, but for those of us that don't have LTE (i'm in spokane and no LTE here or in Seattle) then ur stuck using HSPA+ but there is a catch, normally if u wanted to change to force 3g only or EDGE u could jusy dial *#*#4636#*#*, but when u go to the options, u can't change it, so what does that mean to all of us??? it means LTE is stuck on sucking juice from our phones without the ability to turn it off.....yet....
10. Bootloader, yes HTC is making strives on making bootloaders unlock-able, but AT&T decides to overrule HTC and keep the bootloader locked, now i'm personally hoping that come the 6th that we get the abilty to unlock our phones, but i doubt it.....what that means??? It means no custom software, Kernels, Hacks and Performance enhancements...
Pro's
1. The Display is breathtaking, from the moment you power it up and set it up, u can't not be impressed by the colors/viewing angles, this display is just *****in......
2. This phone is fast, and i mean super fast no lags, the only issue i have had is while listening to music and you start running navigation the music will hesitate for just a brief second, other then that the phone is QUICK.....
3. The phone build quality is amazing, i was worried about getting the white one because of how dirty it would look after awhile, and i'm going to be honest the phone stays decently clean for a white device, and the phone is amazingly light but doesnt feel cheap like some other devices.....not going to say any names =-) (Samsung)....
4. The beats audio i always thought it was just a marketing ploy and a gimmick but i personally can vouch for a difference, it makes a little difference in headphones, but i have a really nice sound system and when comparing different devices plugged into the system, i can assure u the beats sounds clearer, louder, and hits really hard, and not a another device can compare (IPhone, Sensation,Desire HD)
5. The Camera is amazing, the best way i describe the camera is making everything in life that we see look better and sharper then it really is, i love the ability to take a good picture quickly and it is super super fast, from lockscreen to camera is exactly how fast HTC said it does.....The 4 pictures per second is amazing and i love it, the 1080p video recording with video stabilization is nice, but the quality just isn't as nice as the pictures.....the only thing i wish was different was the option to auto-enhance after picture is taken...but besides that the camera is amazing....and u willl love it...
6. Speaker, the speakers sound nice and loud with no annoying tinging, but don't lay your phone on its back on a soft surface or u won't hear crap....
7. Love the fact with ICS that i now can change my music from Play Music on the lockscreen and the beats function works system wide, that's amazing and i love it, speaking of the music apps on the device the HTC music app that all music apps, such as Shazam, Tune-In, Last FM, all go into the music app for quick launch, what does this mean? it means that i can click on music and have all of my music apps conveniently in one spot to launch them all from....
8.There are so many Pro's to list for this device, and i will list them as i have time.....sorry that this isn't fully complete yet, but it will be
Conclusion
Even though there are some issues with the One X and they are quite annoying, this device is solid, and i am super glad that i got this device, and as the device is out for awhile and bug reports are submitted to the HTC Dev team i see the issues being resolved eventually......So honestly the device even with it's issues is the best device to date that i have seen, and if ur thinking of the samsung SIII, i want u to look at the specs and tell me again why the samsung is better.....because i'm not impressed and nothing blows me away with the device, the ONE X hands down is the device that Apple and everyone else needs to watch out for.....
I WILL BE EDITING THIS THREAD AS I LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS DEVICE....THIS IS JUST A QUICK REVIEW...AND MY FIRST REVIEW...THANKS FOR READING AND IF THIS DOES HELP ANYONE, THE THANKS BUTTON IS DOWN THERE SOMEWHERE

Con's
1. HTC's keyboard is fun to use but its not as feature rich as Swype, and speaking of swype, u can install it and use it but when u restart the phone for any reason, swype comes up but its tiny, in order to fix it u have to disable swype and then re enable it....
2. Wallpaper from the gallery is kinda a *****, because the wallpaper is scrollable u can never set the full picture as your wallpaper, but zedge works just fine, i have tried wallpaper wizard and a couple other apps and its a no go...
3. Dropbox, we get free 23GB of data for two years, but with AT&T it doesnt come pre-loaded, what that means is that u have to download it and install it, but the catch is its not like the international One X where dropbox is intagrated into the system, i bring this up because i would like to be able to autosave my pictures from the camera to dropbox, but u can't with the AT&T One X...

1. Easy if you don't like the stock keyboard use another one like you said. Options..
2. You have 672 whatever of memory because the other 230 is dedicated to the system...... Thought you guys should figure it out by now???
3. Boat ware is a given on all phones.
4. Nfc is restricted in most carriers during times throughout fact that they are creating their own payment system called isis.
5. even though your not in a lte area, it is not draining your battery for lte.. You will get the same battery life as me in a lte area.
6. No the boot loader won't be unlocked soon. No not the 6th. After or month or morr, yes. So just enjoy the phone then feel free to modify the heck out of it when it's allowed.

I downloaded Dropbox and I am able to download my photos automatically. Seems to work just fine.
Dropbox does auto upload pics and vids. You do have to manually delete them from your device if you don't want them taking up phone memory though.

Same here, but I was on wifi, it was really crisp.

is no one concern about the edge sense failure in the announcement?

I saw the phone's announcement, and in my opinion they should never let Charlie Chang present a phones again.
It was one of the most awkward announcements I watched. He looked like he is going to explode, and every feature he presented it looked like he is praying to god that it will work.
but that's one thing.
during the presentation he tried to activate google assistant through the Edge Sense, and it didn't work, then he tried again and it failed again, then he made the most awkward "ooopss" he could make, while trying again couple of times until he continued presenting the google assistant without mentioning or talking about the incident (which is understandable but still troubling).
the weirdest thing is that I can't find any review or post that talks about it, I thought the press will destroy Htc for this screw up.
for me it's really troubling, this gimmick can be nice, but it's the first time we see something like this on any phone and I have doubts about its quality.
what do you think?
Meh, to say that I've never had stuff like that happen on any phone I've owned would be a huge understatement.
Had a unit in hand to test it one week ahead of the official announcement. On my test unit the Edge Sense worked really good, after getting accustomed after the first 30 Minutes and configuring it to my pressure sensitivity in settings.

Jeah some other people already tried Edge Sense and said something similar like @5m4r7ph0n36uru said. Its working okay or good - better then many expected. But for me its just a nice to have. Lets see how much they can improve this feature with future Software updates. Maybe its just a feature that ends up being a public prototype which would also be okay. If this feature is any good they will probably improve the hardware behind it in a future device.
I mean its the same with the fingerprint scanners, the first and even second version in the iPhone was quite bad in my opinion. The one in the 6s is good, but the ones before where too slow and the failure rate was too high (for me).

I wouldn't read too much into it - could be nerves, could be the phone wasn't set up properly for him, old software, etc.
Microsoft launched a version of windows (I think it might have been Win98) and during the launch they encountered the Blue Screen Of Death... it didn't seem to have much impact on their future!
I'm not too worried. If it doesn't work well I will just disable it. The phone is still nice.

They will update it. As HTC told in the same briefing, they are already planing to implement Double-Tab as a possibility to take further actions with Edge Sense, though they couldn't tell the date at this time but only that it is on the list. So I guess they are definitely planing to implement more gestures by such a step making short press, long press and double press available. With two different force settings, this would give us six gestures in total to configure for separate actions.
Something further is App based actions that'll be implemented to change the action resulting from a short press depending on the App you're using.

I hope so and i am sure they will but all I'm saying is that the hardware will be limited like i said with the fingerprint or another example the pressure sensitivity from the surface pen. In the first iterations it only had 256 different steps now they have around 2000. (not sure about the exact numbers here )
My hope is not too big about this squeeze feature in the first iteration but i am curious and will give it a try.

I thought the same Totally agreed with you... But I'm still buying the phone.. I hope after 1-2 updates it will work better.
I am lucky I wasn't in his shoes. Very awkward indeed. His hands were shaking.
I don't think it will damage sales. And in a live event anything can happen.
I don't think it even had to do with edge sense TBH... I think it had to do with the assistant apps themselves and probably the internet connection within the venue.
Mine works well do far. I just need to remember about it. I've left it starting the camera and it's good.
Honestly, I was hoping the edge sense would have worked just as the early videos showed of a couple walking the street and navigating the app drawer with the edge. Maybe version 2. But that was sick!

Can't say I've every been walking the street and needed to navigate the app draw. I have shortcuts for everything already. Actually only time I navigate the app draw is when I'm adding a shortcut lol. But I see what you saying. Maybe if they added volume up down or scrolling, but don't think that's how it works.
well... it would probably have worked better if she took them off..
