The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets. Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we've heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you've got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn't get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty of awkwardness. Let us know if you fare better -- you'll find a Thunderbolt-specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals.
http://blogs.skype.com/en/2011/06/smile_skype_for_android_with_v.html
Figured I would drop this in here if anyone has some know how and wants to look into it to see if there is anyway for us to have this on our phone. Doubt it though considering it requires 2.3 which seems to be the standard for google video chat and stuff, but hey, its worth a shot!!!
Found some more info. Tested and still didn't work but apparently on our device but confirmed on the SGS2. Here is the link for the guy who got it working.

Probably requires GB.... I would think
yep. the official requires gb and in the list of device check. with device check removed, almost all with gingerbread can use it.
man, so much we can't do without gb. This phone should have launched with it.

Yeah, one of Google's big thing at IO was that they wanted to eliminate the fragmentation, yet I haven't seen anything to indicate they're taking steps to achieve this.
Unfortunately it's one big advantage Apple has... they take a hard line position that the carrier doesn't touch the OS software, nor prevent the deployment of the updates. Not sure why Google is such a wuss when it comes to holding the carriers accountable for the timely delivery of their updates. AT&T says it's because they have to ensure a quality user experience, but comon, what AT&T customer actually believes that crap? LOL

hey, this is gonna sound like a really dumb question and way off topic but can you tell me how your notified when someone posts. I have always been one to read through forums daily but have never gotten too good at participating, as you might tell as I have been a member for 3 years and have very little posts. I personally have to try and remember the threads I participated in and see if someone replied. This seems very redundant but I don't see a better way to be notified. Thanks in advance
Is anyone's phone dying quickly after installing this. I even tried signing out and closing the app but my phone legit drains 10% an hour on standby. So I deleted the app. Now my wifi is turning on and off and can't keep a constant connection. Help?

I personally have seen no change since installing it, as for the wifi thing are you rooted and running any rom of sort of just stock? I have seen some wifi issues with the roms. Don't know if maybe the app sparked the problem or what but maybe you can backup your apps and reinstall. Good luck

The only true advantage that Apple has over Android is that they only more or less support one device. Android is spread amongst how many different devices? It's easy to put out lackluster updates to a single device, but putting out updates to 20+ different devices isn't so easy.
how are you guys even getting it to install? is it actually working?
yes please, can any one confirm that the video call on Skype is working on the infuse?
regards
no it is not working. installing the custom apk does give you the video call option, but if you press it, it goes into landscape to prepare for video call and then it does nothing. gingerbread is needed since it uses the frontfacing camera api.

Yes, my phone's battery started draining in about two hours after installing Skype, so I uninstalled and things are better again now.
Even if Skype supports video on the Infuse, I don't think I will start using it unless they address the battery usage.

Pure vanilla Android.
There's a bunch of stuff preinstalled on it, but it's all Google stuff; I don't think there's any third-party apps.
It's not plain android, there's a bunch of Google bloatware.

I'm curious as to what you consider Google bloatware, because the Nexus S is about as plain as you can get. Most of the time bloatware is stuff added by OEMs, such as the preinstalled demo games on the MT4G. Mind elaborating?
I can't speak for JC, but in my mind, anything that comes preinstalled on a device which I neither want nor need is bloatware. This, of course, makes the entire concept subjective, but in general with things like Android, I think less is more, since you can download nearly all of these things from the Market anyway. The consumer-side justification of "bloatware" (revenue for the provider, of course, being the primary, producer-side justification) is to present the user with access to a service they might otherwise not know to look for. ("Oh, hey, my phone can play TV/can display YouTube/has internet radio/whatever!"). For most of us though, particularly anyone savvy enough to be on XDA in the first place, most of it ends up falling into one of three categories:
-Don't care about
-Use a different app for
-Would have downloaded if it wasn't included.
In any case, I've observed that what most people have the biggest issue with isn't that stuff may come preinstalled on their phone, it's that you can't get rid of it, and if you do, you may well open yourself to a world of trouble should you ever wish to install an OTA update.
I would consider it plain android, as the "bloatware" on it is really only google apps, which come with all android phones. It doesn't have bloatware from a third party though like some of the other android phones. Either way, bloatware can be removed off any rooted phone with titanium backup

Fair enough points.
Unfortunately, we still run into that last issue even on the Nexus S. Folks were unable to update via the stock 2.3.1 OTA if they had modified system files, such replacing the stock Mms.apk or Gmail.apk with the black/custom ones from the Themes & Apps section or deleting any of their relevant .odexs. Even placing the missing files back on the system partition didn't seem to work, at least for me. It was a very curious update.

True, but it does still support up to 7.2Mbps down which you'll only get in a t-mobile 4g area.
I was just in Orlando and i was getting around 5-6Mbps on my N1 and in a Nexus S i was testing at best buy and it was pretty damn fast. puts my DSL connection at home to shame.

I don't think Google has an office app for Android. Every device has launched with some kind of partnered 3rd party, either ThinkFree, or Quickoffice. At least, I think those are the two they've used.
If they didn't, you wouldn't be able to read any kind of text document on your phone and that's just kind of a silly thing to not be able to do, imo.
EDIT: And on that note, Google should probably make a office app! lol
Who really cares whats installed or not, EVERYTHING can be uninstalled.
after using ThinkFREE for a while on the Galaxy S, i can say it's really good
way better than the Docs To Go and/or QuickOffice which i'm using on the XT720
but truth is... you don't need any of those with Google Office online, it's so much easier to keep things and work with documents using Google Office Online

All I want to hear from Samsung is:
When will they fix our gps?
When will we get 2.2?
Why should I ever consider buying any Samsung product in the future?
The worst crap I ever bought is also from Samsung. It's a BlueRay player that constantly locks up and has to be hard reset. They sell junk. They don't test their junk. They don't support their junk. They have no regard for their customers after the sale.

i would still recommend the captivate provided the end user is not afraid of rooting and custom roms.
Rarely do you find a device without its own particular flaws but i can't name another smartphone currently available that i would prefer over my rooted/custom rom captivate.
I just want to know... how is it that a big company with all these resources... couldn't make that good of an audio driver for our headset jacks... Really. Coming from an iPhone 3GS, I chalked the diminished volume and audio quality up to the audio capabilities of android itself... until I downloaded Voodoo and read how Voodoo Sound works. Poorly written driver? They let a poorly written driver out of the gates past QC? And someone in their free time (although very very extremely insanely talented) wrote a better one?
Voodoo really does make a world of difference... I love the new audio quality Supercurio gave us. My bass actually rattles my windows now! I can hear the extra quiet songs!
Maybe Samsung should let supercurio be in charge of all things dev.
In all good spirit and fun though, I really hope Samsung John is what and who he says he is, and can "get the ball rolling" as far as development goes.

Haha! Hell no I'm not.
Unless Samsung releases an update that makes my phone amazing, i am selling my phone in the next month.
I have tried all the ROMs, and the Devs have done a great job, but the underlying architecture sucks. The default email and calendar is terrible. I switched to Touchdown but it has lag that is not present on other phones (even with Voodoo).
My Bravo is a better phone running 2.1 then the Captivate with 2.2 - I really like the form factor of the captivate, but the software that samsung put out is holding it back - even with Dev ROMs.
Hey if you guys check over at supercurio's twitter seems he has been talking to @samsungcarla and @samsungjohn and they seem to be communicating very well!
I see another promised date has come and nearly gone by. Oh well, it's Samsung!
what was promised today?
Looks like SamsungCarla linked some vibrant sdk and api stuff.
Install the game he recommends on his twitter feed; and if you are on a stock ROM check out the message that you get from the game... methinks he is not running the publicly available stock.

Quality or lack of is what I would assume the reason behind halting the update. At least Verizon Cates about pushing "working" updates.
I would rather wait for them to bang out the issues as opposed to them dropping every little piece of garbage that gets coded.

People are machines programmed to believe in their own importance above all other things. It follows that any event which (they believe) inconveniences them is, by necessity, either a conspiracy or a purposeful act of G_d. Anything else would deminish their perceived importance. Remember friends, the best way to find the center of the universe is to look in a mirror... now where is that sarcasm punctuation mark on my keyboard...

The screenshot is from verizon wireless and says its delayed. Also if you call tech support, they will tell you its delayed. How much more proof do you need?
You might be waiting a while..
Also to add, (pls take it for what you will, I trust my source and have no doubt there is some truth to this).
Verizon has delayed the tbolt OTA and a few others (over 10 others) due to issues with verizons system. There has been no mention of the tbolt ota or others having issues themselves. The biggest concern is not letting all the OTA's roll out to close together because it will jam the system. They are discussing which OTA's should go first by necessity and/or importance. They also say that LTE has been an issue and is part of the issues with verizons system.
So it seems that if the ota does roll out in the near future, it will not be changed (also since this is considered a maitenance update, they usually stay seperate from major updates such as o/s ones).
I'd like to get the communities thoughts on this. It seems that to the app world the g2x won't get any support like it isn't relevant. most likely noone wants to put an app on this phone since tmobile continues to blame apps for the ****ty phones problems.
i refuse to do my rom for this phone because i cant determine if i caused a problem or the dirvers or the phone itself. its just not worth my time.
THan again they probably work with the phone developers to get these apps out and i would bet lg hasnt responded or done what is asked of them.

I know what you mean. I have pretty much had my fill of the g2x debacle. I have had both the Sensation and the G2X since June 8, but I have finally decided to sell my G2X on craigslist. There's just no reason for me to keep it at this point, it's become more of a liability than anything.
well it's because all the exaggerated negative posts on this forum when the g2x was released and then when people google g2x and read this forum the power of suggestion leads them to believe that "yeah, there is flaws with the g2x" then they in turn start posting BS about so called "problems" on other g2x forums and then it spread like wild fire, making ppl who never even tried the phone to conclude the phone is a bust.
All the slanderous, false and exaggerated remarks about the G2x in the first 3 months never gave it a chance to shine and show it's true potential.
But those that know better, this phone is a Beast and definitley a keeper.

I've had the G2X since the day it came out. The only real issue I've had with it is a random reboot once every couple of days.
I'm MUCH more troubled by the recent trend of app support by phone model. That's the LAST thing Android needs now and it's mostly driven by DRM concerns rathern than technical ones.

You can't be serious. Your saying that people are lying about their issues with the G2X? I had to purchase 5 G2X's to get a working one that didn't freeze or reboot a couple tines a day. If you want, I can show you my receipts for the returns so you don't think I'm a liar.
In my opinion, 1 out of 5 devices is not a good ratio. Was there people lying about problems they were having? Of course. There's trolls on every forum who don't own the device and just want to start giving other ones bad names. Are there people who have had multiple devices with the same exact problems. Yes, I'm one of them and there are people here who I trust who are reporting the same thing.
I agree, its a good device of you get a bug free version but lets be honest. Not everyone gets lucky.

LG acknowledged the problems with the phone before it was ever released in the U.S. They could have salvaged the phone and their reputation if they reacted back in March when they became aware of the problems. Instead, things got so bad T-Mobile pulled the phone. I don't think they did that because of what they read on this forum. Even today, after nine months of coding, the best LG can do is a GB ROM with A Froyo kernel. That's what screwed up the phone, not "the power of suggestion." And with the likelihood of future LG ROM and driver updates being pretty much non-existent that will effect the devs working on the phone.
So all those lock ups, battery pulls and random crap was all in my head? Thank you so much for the clarity. I feel better now.

well it's because all the exaggerated negative posts on this forum when the g2x was released and then when people google g2x and read this forum the power of suggestion leads them to believe that "yeah, there is flaws with the g2x" then they in turn start posting BS about so called "problems" on other g2x forums and then it spread like wild fire, making ppl who never even tried the phone to conclude the phone is a bust.
All the slanderous, false and exaggerated remarks about the G2x in the first 3 months never gave it a chance to shine and show it's true potential.
But those that know better, this phone is a Beast and definitley a keeper.

But slander is thrown out when the statements are true. so therefore its not slander.
But your right. i have seen many phones get pulled from the carriers because of false accounts of user experiences... oh wait i have seen phones with just as many problems reported that were never pulled. so maybe that makes this one worse of all time?
jacob.. not sure if you work for tmobile or lg but it wont work sorry.
the phone has a bad rep for a good reason. and the same phone over seas had the same problmes 2 months before it was even released here. so you can thank LG for releasing a phone they already knew had big problems.
Glad you seemed to get one of the few early release phones that didnt have the problems. but just because you have 20 dollars in your pocket doesnt mean every does..get it... just becaue your phone worked doesnt mean everyone here is making something up. tmobile pulling the phone is all the proof needed.. if you can understand that than there is really no hope for you.

I'll agree with this post. At first getting 5 good in a row I thought those with issues were nuts..
Then I received 2 bad ones after that, getting it free on a new line.. Nothing new on the phone and it froze and rebooted like crazy, 2 in a row... Now I finally got a good one again no issues.. So I had 2 bad out of 8. 25% bad vs good here, but its true, there are defective ones for sure that can't be fixed no matter what you do..... So ya its true there are good ones and there are bad. You will know in the first 12 hours...
When you get a non defective one there awesome..
So back to my question, do you guys also feel like this phone is now dead to the market?

I'd have to say yes. Not only with the general market, but also on the development side. I can't see anyone else doing development for the G2x other than the great devs we already have.

Oovoo on g2x has long been working. Skype ignores all tegra 2 devices not just g2x.
We only have few devs, especially if you came from hd2. Plus, we have had a lot of whiners few months back.
This past days, g2x forums in rootzwiki has been very active, even devs post their builds there first than here.

What app support? 3 programs? That's basis for the "APP WORLD HAS ABANDONED THE G2X?" Come on! Give me a break. I'm sure all the apps your heart is missing will soon enough be working on your phone.

I thought Android was the darkside . My wife and I went to Best Buy on Friday for new phones. I have always purchased Andriod and she always get's an iPhone. My wife got a 6S which was just made available and I seriously considered getting one also. One thing about iPhones is that though they are locked down they just work and they work great. I have owned 3 Android tablets and 5 phones. It seems like I spend more time tweaking them with rooting and ROMs than using them. My wife never does anything with her phone but install apps and she never have issues. So after about 15 minutes with a patient young sales girl I ended up with the S6 anyway. I was lucky enough to get an OE2 firmware and I already rooted. But I'm seriously considering taking the latest update and get out of the rooting and ROMs hassle. I have about 10 days left to decide if I going to keep or return the S6. My main concern is the battery. I'm retired and I have a landline so I probably don't use my phone as much as most people here but I travel often and don't want to worry about running out of juice. So if the S6 doesn't pan out I'm leaving the darkside for an iPhone.

It may not be inherently an issue with Android, but the issues Android has on verizon are not present on Apple devices.
When Apple agreed to place the iPhone on VZW, Verizon had to give them sole control of their software. The only thing VZW does is the baseband and radio for their networks. Everything else is in Apple's sole control. There is no verizon bloatware, VZW can NOT add or remove any software or features, ie...Samsung pay....
I believe that many of the issues that Android devices suffer from stem directly from verizon putting their noses where they don't belong.
It's taken years for me to get to this point. I've owned numerous Android phones from all of the manufacturers, and it's truly been an enjoyable ride. But the increasingly difficult security coupled with vzw's encroachment into the software side of the house has driven me to get fed up with it all. I just want a phone that works....that doesn't suffer from horrible memory leaks, that has decent battery life, that isn't plagued with cell standby issues, and evidently going to the iPhone is the only reliable way to do that.
I like the S6. But it does have it's issues. The main one for me is battery life. This could be because they decided to shrink the battery down or from software flaws...ie cell standby, memory management, or bluetooth being enabled never allows the phone to go into deep sleep (this is a new one I started experiencing a few weeks ago). Plain and simple....I have owned the S6 since launch day and the battery life is terrible. I have yet to get through a half a day without needing to charge and that is just unacceptable to me. My fiance has had her iphone 6s since the 24th and has only charged it twice. With 3-4 hr on screen time a day and pandora running for about an hour a day.

This is very true. I love Android, but I am sick of having to jump through holes just to get it to be clean. I hate how Verizon butchers everything and Samsung doesn't have the balls to stand up to them. Apple is able to do that. I have no hatred against Android nor iOS. I go by features that fit my requirements and the S6 has the best - Primary being the camera. However, I've noticed my photos have been blurry and the S6 can't decide what to do in low-light and doesn't use flash, which forces me to have people re-pose what should have been candid. I do believe the iPhone 6s will have the better camera (or at least he software to use the camera) and I would like to jump to it. It's just, the lack of IR, private mode (obviously just software), and battery life/fast charging, are big killers for me. Given the smaller battery and worse battery life, charging the damn thing is so slow. At least implement a fast charging feature and I can overlook my laziness of looking for my TV remote and privacy mode.

You do realize that Android / VZW do the exact same thing right? There is nothing that Android offers that Apple doesn't that's actually useful to me...I like widgets and such but I don't need them. And you know what? At least apple doesn't feel it necessary to force a hard warning about volume levels damaging my hearing...
Use to new able to remove that annoying little stuff via rooting/terminal emulator/ or romming.....well that's all but impossible now

I can relate to what the OP is saying. I have had an android phone on Verizon since the OG Moto Droid. I enjoyed tweaking Android phones. I have the S6 64gb right now. I love certain features of the phone but it is flawed. I was hoping that the new Nexus phones would be great and they probably will. However I don't want to have to buy a phablet to get good specs and better battery life.
I just purchased the iPhone 6s for my wife. Were on vzw and I may switch myself. It is a struggle cause I don't know anything but Android.

Haha enjoy your walled garden dude. I hope Apple approves of all the apps you want to install because you're not installing them otherwise. Maybe you don't have a problem with it but I hate being told what I can and cannot install. Oh you mean like the people who post about Apple in the GS6 forum just for attention? Just switch and leave. Change your iphone launcher or sideload an app. Maybe use NFC to initiate a macro. Activate your notification light with different colors for different apps... the list is endless. I'm not sure what you are looking for.

I'm far past the point in my life where I need to be validated by anonymous people on the Internet...chances are...judging by your behavior....I was using Android while you were still in elementary school. If you'd bother to have read my posts, you'd know that I've been using /hacking /flashing android devices since long before they became mainstream. Get over yourself
My post was meant for those users (who btw outnumber you in this thread) that may be in similar situations or experiences.
Changing my launcher? I don't even do that on android devices....too many bugs most of the time. Use NFC to initiate a Macro? I've done that, and it can make things a little more convenient. But I would rather use it to pay at the store. Something you can't do with the S6 because verizon has the android companies by the balls and just says "we aren't going to allow you have that feature" ...changing led colors? Really? Why even mention that?

That's what I'm saying. I've been doing it for so long it's just become second nature. I miss the OG Droid....that was a tinkerers dream. After years of doing it though, I'd rather spend the time doing things that are more fun. In other words, I don't care about customization options or 3rd party apps anymore. I just want a phone that actually works and works well out of the box, not needing any intervention on my part other than picking it up and turning it on.
This most recent issue with my bluetooth not allowing my phone to sleep was the straw that broke the camels back for me. Could I fix the problem? Probably....do I want to devote the time to it? Nope....not anymore.

Until recently you would have been hard pressed to find a bigger advocate for Android than me. There were always two features that kept me with Samsung...a removable battery and expandable storage. But when you remove those two features and basically make an iPhone clone you are going to lose on the software front. Especially when your hobbled by VZW and all the crap that they do to mess up a pretty good product.

There both good operating systems it doesn't have to be one or the other yea a nexus is fun to flash the **** out of it but obviously Apple doing something right too it's more about Verizons locked bootloaders.
