Nexus 2 anyone? - General Topics

Google and Samsung are at the center of this rumor coming straight out of left field that claims they will be announcing the Nexus Two running Android 2.3 at a press conference on November 8th. If this rumor holds water, then this is truly something that nobody expected. The original Nexus One may have been dubbed the true “Google Phone,” but the fact of the matter is that HTC was the phones manufacturer. The device didn’t sell as expected, as it was only available online. It never reached the retail channels that Google claimed it would eventually. The phone was even slated to hit Sprint and Verizon but was shelved when similar (and more impressive) Android handsets hit the market. If this will be the first Android phone to run on 2.3, then this should be a phone worth some serious attention. This very well could be the software branded Gingerbread, even though other rumors had it as version 2.5 or even 3.0. The rumor also says that the phone will be coming to multiple networks. So to summarize, the Nexus Two is supposedly going to be produced by Samsung. Any of you Galaxy S users out there pissed? I mean, you guys are still on 2.1 at the moment, although 2.2 is surely around the corner. Then again, this is a rumor so it could turn out to be just a crock. But hey, November 8th is only a week and a half away. Tell us what you think down below, and let the rumor mill start churning.

Oh not Samsung. I've had Galaxy S im my hands it is a very good phone (mostly because of the hummingbird processor ) but its all plastic and looks "iphonish", HTC on the other hand have better quality build but cheaper performance. I do hope that Google will dictate what Nexus 2 should look like and that it will not be all plastic!

The best and the only screen SAMOLED is made by Samsung and nor HTC or Motorola have access to it. The biggest problem with Nexus 1 is the crappy thouchscreen, so it would make ALOT of sense to go with Samsung and use its SAMOLED2 (2gen samoled has higher resolution) technology.

A Samsung manufactured NEXUS TWO with an extraordinary processor & a superb AMOLED screen is just way too awesome , If the same is sold in stores instead of the web & that too worldwide instead of just one launch country it could be the most successful android handset ever .

I have a Vibrant, and I'm not pissed because if this is true I'll be selling it and pre-ordering this phone.
I do however, wonder who owns the rights to call the phone a Nexus. I had figured it was named/owned by HTC, but if this is true I guess not.

What comes after the nexus one?

I moving into android development and have been trying to figure out what to buy as my "development phone". I know the nexus one is still available to developers, but it's almost a year old.
As I understand it one of the advantages of the nexus one is that you are able to run a version of android unmolested by manufactures and carriers. It also receives any and all android update first.
Once it goes away what phone is going to replace it? What phone will run a pure version of android, and be in line for the first updates?
It seems the nexus one is approaching the end of this life cycle. If you were a new developer and on the limited budget (and which of us isn't) what phone would you buy right now for development purposes?
Thanks!
Nexus Two is being developed by Samsung and is supposed to be out before the end of the year.
yea samsung is having a press event on the 8th of this month. supposedly they are gonna announce a nexus 2 or something. so time will tell
hp://www.engadget.com/2010/10/28/nexus-two-does-or-doesnt-exist-is-or-isnt-being-released/
Thanks for the info!
Rumors are flying on the N2...Nov 8th should clear up some of them.
Will the Nexus 2 be similar to the Galaxy S series?
This is interesting. I think the Nexus Two still might come out of the HTC corner.

Makes sense. Doesn't HTC build more Android phones than anyone else? Plus I was a little suspicious about the SAMOLED screen on the N2. If there is a shortage as claimed, I can't see why would Samsung put it on a "non-Samsung" branded phone?
It looks like samsung is making the nexus two, and it's going to be delayed. See link below. In short samsung ran across a major hardware issue during dog food testing. So, we know it's coming from samsung, we just don't know when
http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/05/go...ed&utm_campaign=Feed:+Techcrunch+(TechCrunch)
Pretty sure there gonna call it Nexus S, like LG w/ Optimus One, and all the other Optimus phones, besides Samsung's phones arent the best, and if you really want a phone for just development the original droid can be found for around $200 on ebay, its easy to root and can be easily overclocked to 800Mhz, which I know isn't as amazing but it'll definitely get you the most bang for your buck. (just searched for it on ebay theres one thats about to end in a minute going for $150 so you can probably find for cheaper).
only thinq i hope its that htc make it, cus i dnt trust samsung. all the SGS are crap. they are made of plastic and lagg like crazy lol. hope the famous nexus two keeps the htc quality standarts.

Nexus S

Found this on BGR. It's an image of the Nexus S (I assume that's the Nexus 2). The only thing that makes the word fake come to mind is that google said there wouldn't be another Nexus (1) and also that this Nexus S is made by... Samsung... WTF.
I'm wondering what everyone else's take is on this. Real or fake?
It is real Engadget(dot)com has several screenshots of the phone and there is even a video that has Eric Schmidt using it.
Only thing I know for certain is that its a Galaxy S type form factor with a front-facing camera with stock Gingerbread. There is also a rumor that the phone isn't a "4G" phone (meaning it only supports a downlink of 7.2mbps instead of 14.4mbps). More than likely the phone will release before the holiday season.
Well if that's the case then it's no successor of the Nexus. With those specs and being made by Samsung it's actually a downgrade. I have nothing against them btw, #1 when it comes to anything dealing with displays and screens. Their phones are just laggy from what I've read, and there's very little support from them as far as updates and such.
I played with a Captivate and it was awesome but that's coming from a Mytouch Slide. To go from a Nexus 1 to a Captivate I'm sure it's a totally different impression.

I wouldn't be too quick on marking it a downgrade, the leaked info states that it is powered by a dual-core Orion, it is no your ordinary Galaxy S.
And given that it might be a google phone re-duex the updates will be coming directly from google

Google teaming with samsung - fail?

I believe that new Nexus S will let the google down. I had many issues with samsung products in the past, and I saw glitching stock vibrants. What you guys personally think about it?
I think Samsung wants to screw over their current customers. Then again, I am assuming they are doing this because of the leaks.
Yay, lets mix freedom and complete control and see what we get.... It's retarded and the nexus name is forever tarnished.
I would have loved to see the Nexus line stay with HTC but let's face it, they didn't do a great job with the Nexus One. Crappy digitizer and failing power buttons...
Nexus supposed to be the Android of all androids... But with samsung it will drown. I think dead buttons is nothing compare to a brick, which Nexus S will turn for sure.
Galaxy S phones failed big time. Lagging like hell and freezing. Not to mention previous samsung phones.
I could be wrong too. Lets see how Nexus S will go. Maybe samsung learned the lesson.
Do any of you guys have the phone? Did you create a thread just to bash something you haven't used? I have mine OCed to 1.4 GHz, running stable with CM7. Everything is blazing fast, as lag free as reasonably possible, and I have quadrant scoring at 3700+. Let me know when you can beat that.

Used one for 3 days before wishing the world was flat so I could throw it off the edge. Even with the "new version" the fragmentation compared to the first version of windows phone 7 is just awful. After playing with it I cant find much if any difference from 2.2. If I wanted to throw money away like that I'd buy a vibrant on craigslist for 150, add a front facing camera, then use it as toilet paper that being the most practical use for galaxy S garbage.

Actually I heard somewhere that the Nexus line is suppose to represent "pushing the Android line and what to expect from future Android phones."

Nope, happy with WP7, boy it's great to not lag on the homescreen
The Nexus S is a Samsung product that actually works. They've actually put a lot more effort in the Nexus S than they have the Galaxy S, which is sad to see on many levels. With the build of the Nexus S, and the power of hummingbird, the Nexus S is what all Galaxy S phones should have been. My Moment was a brick in terms of build, dropped it all the time but nothing went wrong with it. But the fact that it had no real hardware support for openGL, was built on 1.5 even though 1.5 didn't support CDMA, and the network issues were so far up there, I'd have to reset my phone 3 times a day! I had to send it back 2 more times and the same thing over and over! Rooting wouldn't help either! So they try to pawn the Intercept off to me as an "upgrade." A smaller resolution that most apps don't support, a slower network, and no Amoled screen? That's not an upgrade. When I had my Epic, the build quality was okay, nothing close to what my Evo is though. But I was tired of waiting for an update that should have come stock on the phone! With a phone like the Galaxy S there is no reason is should have shipped with 2.1! I'm glad Google is the one supporting the Nexus S and not Samsung, because then the Nexus S would have been stuck on 2.3 for half a year after the next Android comes out. I wouldn't mind the Nexus S, but that would be the only Samsung phone I would buy now. After 2 that had terrible support from Samsung, yeah right.

Disagree with you a little bit there. I've got a Samsung TV, and Bluray player and both are amazing. It's their phone products that aren't too great. The Nexus S like I said, is what the Galaxy S should have been.
Samsung's hardware is amazing in my opinion.. Their tv's are the best,, and we saw it on our samoled screens.. I show my phone's picture to people and they are wowed... My vibrant is nice rooted on froyo.. But stock.... It's a piece of...
Thank xda for awesome developers.
samsung's software (touch wiz) sucks..
they don't release updates or keep their word.. They piss enough people off. But people keep coming back..
The nexus is saved by google. but honestly.. The nexus one set new standards on upcoming android phones. We didn't see much competition.. The nexus s came out.. With the same hardware we saw two seasons ago.. New standards? Na I don't think so.. instead we are looking forward to dual core phones.. 4g capable phones.. And to me the nexus isnt much of a difference from what we already had.. Cmon samsung! You should have surprised us with new shzz!
Still love my Vibrant though.. Just wish it was officially on froyo, had an FFC, perhaps some 4g capability... Psh.. I WISH! -__-"
Here I agree. I have samsung tv myself, and it is good. I also had their portable audio players, but they were bad. Nexus S has no sd card slot, 16 gb isnt bad, but what about powerusers? No 3G + support, full 4G coverage is still in the far future. Processor is still the same as in previous phones. No gig of ram. Its like a tiny upgrade of nexus one, not counting 4G and front camera. Oh wait, isnt back camera is 5 megapixels?
They should stop making dozens of models, and create 1 master phone, that kicks asses.

That's sort of what they do now. They have two basis for their major phones.
Hummingbird
or
Samsung S3C6410
They've used Hummingbird in all of their high end phones, and the S3 in their mid-low end phones, and their older flagships like the Spica, the Moment. It's used now in another Galaxy phone I know(Not sure which one), I believe the Behold II has the cpu just not clocked as high, the Transform uses it, and the Intercept uses it.
I have sold my Wave S8500 and Galaxy I5800...I have learned my lesson.....No more Samsung produtcs for me.
Bad quality hardware and bad software support (updates, etc.) and bad customer service.
Google is making a huge mistake here!!
put simply...samsung hardware rocks, but samsung software blows. they really need to dump touchwiz and start from scratch...but imagine htc sense running on a galaxy s...epic win
I own both a Nexus one and a Nexus S. The NS is by far the better phone. Sure the N1 has metal and looks great it is in no way comparable to the NS. No android phone out right now compares with the NS.

[Q] Who is getting Nexus Prime at launch?

I'm thinking of selling my Nexus S early so I can best price possible.. Do you think the price for an used Nexus S will drop once Nexus Prime is announced (not launched)?
I bought it off contract so I'm not locked into any contracts. Will they be available for T-Mobile at launch or only Verizon (as rumored by some)?
Do you think it will be worth it to upgrade?
I for one will be jumping ship on the Nexus line. You can get better hardware and AOSP on other devices so why buy a rebranded GS or GS2?

I'll pick it up - just have to decide on which carrier (we'll see what's announced on Oct 11th).
As far as Sprint costumers goes we are out of luck, since BB is practically giving the NS4G away. I guess if someone needed a phone but didn't. Have an upgrade I could possibly get at least $200 for it but I just don't know. I tell you what my mother in law just got the Epic 4g touch and that is a nice piece of hardware, had me thinking about a change for a minute.

I would have but I had no idea the Nexus Prime would be coming out this year. Just got my Nexus S over the summer . Oh well it's still a great phone either way and I'm assuming the Nexus Prime will be great as well seeing that Samsung is manufacturing it again .
hands down on AT&T version
The rumor is that at time of release, Prime will be only on Verizon. If that is the case I will happily enjoy the tasty Ice Cream Sandwich on my Nexus S
If it is on AT&T or T-Mobile, I will probably get it.
If it comes out on sprint the week is released or around october then yes hopefully the day after its announced on sprint as a 17 bday present as well as a new ps3 : D you know this.counts if it has those rumored specs especially 720p screen lol

I'll stay with the Nexus S for the time being, just in case I don't happen to like the Ice Cream Sandwich update........ I'm pretty sure I'm gonna love it but you never know!

I get your logic I have some points:
I believe Google does a good job of customizing this specifically for us geeks that want a pure android experience.
Google handpicks the best phone they can find to be a Nexus phone. I think Google knows a thing or two about Android phones and if Google says this phone is worthy of carrying their Nexus name then its good enough for me.
Not all phones have an ASOP Rom available. I tried the Bionic out and couldn't find a pure ASOP rom for it. Not to mention the screen was aweful.
Nexus devices get updates much much faster than carrier branded devices.
I was trying to figure out battery life the other day but looking at the GS2 specs after being disappointed to see the GS2 specs I decided to compare the GS1 (Captivate, Vibrant) specs to the Nexus S. To make sure that the Nexus and Galaxy being the same hardware meant the same battery life. The Nexus S has twice the battery life for the same battery. It seems unlikely that the skin alone is cutting the battery life in half. There has to be something else about the Nexus devices that make the battery so much more efficient.
Go to Phonearena[dot]com and compare the handsets for yourself. I personally can't wait to get my hands on the Prime (Galaxy Nexus or whatever they all it).
waiting for the AWS version
Dont forget....in 5 months from now THE LAUNCH of GS3...
it's always a step ladder game
SGS# will always be the flagship
then a new version of Nexus # will always follow behind with the stuff of the previous SGS# and a couple of new extra, and new OS
it's a very good strategy by Samsung, to recycle the left over parts from mass producing SGS#
I will have the Nexus Prime in my pocket the HOUR it launches for Verizon. Ah, the joys of working for Big Red...indirectly, of course...
Is T-Mobile's 4G coverage much better than 3G?
My 3G is horrible. I get 'emergency call only' in some of my classes, while other carriers' phone gets some bars.
I sure hope that the specs in the updated section is true.
- dual-core 1.5GHz Exynos
- dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2
- 8 megapixels camera
- 2,050mAh battery
If it is true, I would definitely get it!! As for the old specs, I don't mind the TI processor, but 5MP back cam and 1.3MP front cam is so Galaxy S1.

Samsung Galaxy S3 design and specs leaked

wow
Details have emerged on a follow-up to Samsung's brilliant Galaxy S2 smart phone. Inventively dubbed the Galaxy S3, it could pack a 4.6-inch screen and a 1.8GHz processor.
Specs of the new phone appear to have been leaked to Android site Phandroid, as part of what is reportedly one slide from an internal Samsung Mobile presentation. But unlike most Powerpoint affairs, this presentation is actually rather interesting, as it shows off what could be Samsung's newest flagship phone.
Take this with a pinch of salt, but the slide lists a stonkingly powerful 12-megapixel camera and 2GB of RAM to boot. As if that wasn't enough, it looks like the S3 could have a different shape, ditching the S2's squarish look in favour of something a little more rounded at the top and bottom. Phandroid's sources reckon it'll be thinner than the S2 to boot.
The five tray icons on the front of the blurry S3 graphic would also indicate that it will run Ice Cream Sandwich, the new version of Android that was supposed to be launched today, but has been postponed as a mark of respect for the late Steve Jobs.
While these details on the S3 appear we're still waiting on another Samsung effort, the Galaxy Nexus, which is going to be Google's newest flagship phone following the Nexus S, and the first mobile running Ice Cream Sandwich.
We'll be keeping an eye out for more Galaxy S3 news -- if more concrete evidence appears hinting that it will be out fairly soon, that could be reason to not buy the Galaxy Nexus, and to wait for the S3 instead.
Exciting times for mobiles, let us know what you think in the comments, or on our Facebook page.

Yep. Specs sheet from GSMArena,
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_iii-4238.php
Don't how long this stupidity of attaching a LED Flash with a 12 MP Camera will go on!
not to sure about the design to be honest....and what about quadcore chips..and apologies if i am wrong but they are using the same chip as s2? what about the kal-el chipset aint that suppose to be more powerful? either way il be waiting for that as my next upgrade cause i love the s2 and only fair to get the next galaxy beauty..
Obviously it's great to see another amazing phone to be launched but i cant help thinking Samsung are releasing too many phones too soon, how is the average man going to afford another expensive smartphone only months after buying a GSII and because of this sales of this new phone wont probably be as good as the GSII assuming this leaked information is correct and this will be available the end of 2011, if i were Samsung i would wait until at least March 2012 before launching this.
Then your Samsung won't be stayed as the second largest manufacturer in the world! Besides these phones are not meant for the average customers dude!
However I too hate the idea of releasing too many phones in a short period of time. That's why I like Apple.

Given the economic climate even the middle classes and "posh people" are suffering it's not just working class people therefore i believe sales will suffer if they release too many phones over a short period of time.
Your both wrong here..Galaxy s2 think was released back in May, June i think...The next S3 probably will be unveiled at barcelona event in february march and with a release couple of months after...so as for flagship phones they do release one a year but i do agree that they release alot of handsets...but dont forget the s2 variants are released in the US are basically the same as ours over here...oh they have a 1.5ghz processor..just overclock the one you have and bam you have the same....what is samsung doing wrong is not releasing the phone globally at the same time everywere...thats were they are doing wrong i think
Yeah it was early May i think when the GSII was released i got mine in June i was trying to sell my HD2 for ages first to part fund the GSII purchase dealing with muppets and scammers on eBay and Gumtree (never again) but it would be good if Samsung waited until at least early next year before releasing this new dog and bone.

Yeah, engadget points out the slide used the wrong name for the screen... the name of the screen is how some consumers say it but not the technical name that Sammy uses... most definitely not an authentic slide.

thnak god that it´s a fake, cause it is soo ugly!
4.6 inch screen? what gives... the sgs2 screen is big enough already and it's 4.3.
Nobody really knows if it is real. But if it is real, it gives 32GB sd supprt and that's nice And a big screen, maybe to big?
This looks awesome. Hope Verizon gets it.
It seems too big screen...
my friend is huge Samsung fan - mainly all the devices at his home are Samsung (starting from TV, Fridge, Microwave etc) - also phone eventually.
Used for a year Galaxy S - i said from the beginning that's it's crappy phone (case wise) and now just a week ago bought Galaxy S2. Also took a sneak peak and I rather would say that's it a device not phone anymore.
S 4.0" screen was OK, now 4.3" on S2 is too huge IMHO. HTC Desire HD with 4.3 is quite a smaller.
Now 4.6 is hilarious ok specs are good, but it's not a phone anymore
