what should be my next phone? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

its time for a new phone.
With windows phone 7 coming out, I am curious as to which one, the educated think would be the best in android capability.
My preference would be the LG QUANTUM, as it has a qwerty keyboard.
I am open to other suggestions. HTC seems to have the more hack friendlier phones, but have yet to see a gsm wp7 come from them with a keyboard.
thanks for your input.
PS: Since most of you will ask, I love android. the look feel, and features, however its game suck. So i have an ipad for GAMES, and general browsing, and with the same reasoning I also will be getting a windows 7 phone for GAMES, and because its new/different. According to my wife i'm obsessed. My toy drawer has lots of old gadgets in it (psp, dsi, etc), but who cares what women think!

Get an xbox360 if you want games, smartphone was created not for games.

I would wait for The HTC 7 Pro GSM (if you can wait!)

It seems to me all you care is game, therefor get another iDevice, if Android games are suck for you WP7 is only worse.

HD vs G1

Wich one you prefer and why?
G1 highlights: Android OS
HD highlights: Super 3.8" screen
A good video comparative (Page it´s in spanish): http://www.xataka.com/2008/09/24-htc-touch-hd-y-t-mobile-g1-en-video
G1: Android and Capacitive Touchscreen, along with hardware keyboard
HD: Superior Processing power, WM Customizability, AT&T (maybe) release, and styling. I really wish it had a capacitive touchscreen though.
any ETA on the HD yet? and is it gonna be affordable..to us "commoners" ?
or am i gonna have to dip into my 401k for this sucker?
and am i the only one who thinks the 480x800 WGVA, and 5MP cam is the sweetest thing since sliced bread?
Why is there always a competition thread between phones? The G1 is supposed to be a start for google. . . . and it didn't do so well. Whats next a HD vs iPhone?

Thats prabably one of the targets . . lol
I know, the lack of a real keyboard and D-Pad will be a pain, no multitouch, and no complete tactile feedback(latest pre-pro features bottom touch sensetive buttons with tactile feedback). . .there are some others but whats the fun of finding the flaws, then it makes the phone less "wantable" and then we expect to much out of HTC. . .

I actually agree with Tito here. I'm no fan of iPhone. But you have to give credit to where it's due. iPhone has dominated the American market, not so much the European or Asian markets. You can say that has to do with Apple ability to strike better deals with Phone Service Providers, but you also have to acknowledge that Apple has found themselves a niche market, the portable multimedia market, and has managed to be the frontrunners on that market.
iPhone is essentially a multimedia phone and for it's main purpose, it is "awesome" so to speak and so far WM based devices has struggled to compete with iphone on that front, despite WM more functionability.
The fact that HTC has launched HTC Touch, Touch Dual, Touch Diamond, Touch HD, sort of tells the story of how HTC has faired with WM against the iPhone.
Now one question remains, are HTC devices worst than iPhone in terms of hardware, or HTC is losing ground because WM is just not that good of a program? After all HTC, Omnia, X1 all had to create their own version software UI to make it more "user/finger friendly" for customers.
I for one believe that iPhone is a better multimedia/phone device but because I'm not that much of a multimedia buff, I prefer the all encompassing functionability of WM, which gives me all round advantage.
Now back to the question of HD or G1.
I really have no opinion and I think it's just too soon to make a comparison, as most people have not used the google android yet.
If we talk about hardware then I guess HD is much better than G1, but if we talk about software then G1 has no grounds to compete because it's an enigma still?
imho then unless one really love android then HD will be batter the first g1 imho is ½baked
no teething, no adsp not alot of 3th party progs yet
cant be found without a contract....
but it shows promise
hope sooner or later it will wake the sleeping wm

I'm not sure that Apple have found a niche market. The market was already there but they have been able to exploit it better because of the hype created by the iPod. But let's be honest here: consumers are dumb. If you give something a nice shiny cover people will buy it and that's exactly what happened with the iPod when in reality you could have bought a PPC to not only listen to music but watch videos, play games, surf the net, send emails, etc, etc.
It's no surprise that Apple followed up with a video iPod, iPod Touch and the iPhone. They simply took advantage of MS's inexplicable unwillingness to develop WM into something it could and should have been years ago.
And yet, just like the iPod the iPhone lacks features that could really make it a killer device for EVERYONE. As a techical business user who is also a mass market consumer, for me it's missing 2 fairly essential features: a decent camera (to take spontaneous photos of my son) and the ability to connect it to my laptop to access the internet.
The problem for me is actually a wider one in that no phone on the market does everything I need it to. I want:
- the UI of the iPhone
- the 5MP camera with Xenon flash of the Nokia 6220
- in-built voice navigation of various Nokia devices
- the flexibility of WM
- the inbuilt storage of the iPhone
- the size of the SE XPeria X1
Is that too much to ask? I don't think so but it seems that every manufacturer is reluctant to make such a device when the technology is clearly already out there.
I prefer the HD becase of the hardware specks, the large screen and slick design, also like many others I am windows mobile fan...
G1 design is ugly, they should came with something more slick than this (it looks like the device was made back in 2006 - i am talking about the design)

Yea, but not everyone wants a PPC, they see the iPhone as an easy to use thing that is made by apple(consumer's brain thought: Oh!! Look apple made it it must be good at playing music and junk). I prefer WM because of all the options it has and the more personalization you can do. I would like your idea too, but I wouldn't want the UI of the iPhone simply because as more commands and options add in, your fingers will be too big and its simplistic nature goes away. The UI is successful because it is so restrictive(not too restrictive) and lets things run the same over and over(WM can do the same thing it just depends on the hardware and software support). IDK, I had an iPhone, I loved it but it got stolen and then I realized that I should go back to WM because of the way it works and the freedom it has.

[Q] [q] HTC HD7 PRO POLL

THIS IS A POLL FOR THE HTC HD7 PRO.
Should HTC design, manufacture, and distribute an HTC HD7 PRO?
YES.
OR
NO.
Yes
Yes
Absolutely!
Of course!
Duh!
We don't even know what the HD7 is yet. How can we say there should be a "Pro" model?!?!
Although I do think there should be a "360 Supreme-Oh" or "360 Extreme-Oh" model. This would allow it to be used as a controller for an XBOX360 AND also automatically dispense 2 slices of bacon whenever you complain about there being no cut & paste.
I think screens are big enough and with new typing softwares such as swype, doubled with a sensitive and smooth capacitive touch screen, there isn't really a need for a tactile keyboard. That's just because Im comfortable with using the on-screen keyboard.

I like this idea.
Sure. Why the hell not (even though we actually don't know what the HD7 is yet)?
I have played with the EVO and I don't like 2 things about it. 1. I don't like Android. The look and feel of the operating system on the phone you can not do as much with as with Windows Mobile, as customizing it and hacking it. 2. The capacitive screen. You either have to use your fingers or a special stylus to do anything. If you are wearing any type of gloves, you have to take them off. That really sucks in the friged winter, if you either want to do anything with the phone or need to do anything. Now all you Android fans, don't bash me for stating this. This is my own personal opinion. I am not bashing Android. All I am saying is that (I DON'T LIKE ANDROID). Notice I said ( I ). If you like it, that's fine. I know a lot of people who have the EVO, and I have also recomended it for a few people. I also want a phone that has a keyboard like my TP2. From the voting that has been done so far, I am not the only one who feels that HTC should have a PRO version of their phones, AKA physical keyboard phones.

This one is HTC 7 Pro, Not HD7 PRO. So sad!
From what I have seen for the results of the Poll, the majority of people want an HTC HD7 PRO phone. The HTC 7 Pro will most likely make it to Sprint, but wether or not the HTC HD7 will make it to Sprint is unknown at this time. I said before that if we want HTC & Sprint to bring a phone to market, then we should E-Mail Dan Hesse at Sprint to show him that we are Very Interested in a specific type of phone. We should E-Mail him to let him know that we WANT! the HTC HD7 PRO. E-Mail him. His E-Mail address is [email protected] to show him that we ARE INTERESTED in the HTC HD7 PRO. If enough of us get together and E-Mail him, then our collective voice will be heard.
Ever think there might be technical/cost reasons why they won't do a HD7 Pro? The HD7 is the top-spec WP7 handset (actually, isn't it the highest spec phone currently announced?) so I doubt it's quite as simple as just strapping a keyboard to the back. There'll be size, weight and cost restrictions to consider.
Hopefully this is the HTC HD7 PRO that could come to Sprint.

The title is a typo. There is no such thing as the HTC HD7 Pro. That's just the HTC 7 Pro.
A huge 4.3" phone with a slide-out keyboard would make for a rather large phone. I suppose it could reach a certain demographic. I think it may be a bit too big for my tastes.
To prjkhack;
If you had checked out the link, it states there that it is an early prototype of the HTC HD7 PRO. So what you are saying is that not only the title of the link is wrong, but also the contents of the article. We should just wait and see. If it is an early prototype, then the chances of it really coming to market are good. HTC would not have made a prototype just to waste money. There was a reason why they made an early prototype of the HTC HD7 PRO. The reason is most likely that HTC knows that either there is a demand or will be a demand for it. There are many of us that want and need a physical keyboard, and there are the ones who do not want the physical keyboard at all. As I had said in the past, we have to let Sprint, or what ever other provider you have, and HTC know that we as their customers WANT certain features built into their phones. Both us and them know that it is something that can be done, since it has been done by them before. It is not like we are asking for HTC to build something totaly unrealistic.
As for everyone else;
We shal hope that this is something that will make it to market very very soon. Hopefuly, HTC would keep a lid on it and just suprise us all and release the HTC HD7 PRO for a Christmas release for Sprint.
I like how the voting is going on this. So, please keep voting.
I hope you can also run windows mobile on this device...i would buy it..if its only win7 it would be sad..

Yeah.
All of them utilize T-Mobile's super fast 3g, but only the myTouch 4g will use HSPA+ to it's fullest (cap at 14.4 mbps). I would go to a store and try out the HD7 and the myTouch 4g. Than, go to Best Buy to test run the Nexus S.
I have the Dell Venue Pro by the way.
Hope I helped.
The hardware is a small difference, but the software can make all the difference in the world. It just depends on what you want. Android is very flexible, and you can customize it with ease. WP7 is simple, but simple where you can turn the phone on, check text, check mail, call home, and slide the phone back into your pocket. Android is going to have more apps available in the Market, but Android is also matured a lot more then WP7. But some apps on Android are made for certain phone models, or require root, or just don't work, or really just don't do much of anything. I love my Evo, I do. Right now a plus for me is Android has flash support right now, ad I can tell you I don't get bored of that. But WP7 is a stable OS too, growing, and growing fast. Ultimately, it depends on what you want. Both give a great user experience, but that's my opinion. The Nexus S will have support directly from Google, and will be complete AOSP. If it's important to you though, no HSPA+ at all inside of the device, but it has 2.3 on the phone already. HTC is sure to keep the Mytouch 4g on a fast update schedule, so that's not an issue with the update. I say pick either the Nexus S, or Mytouch 4g, see if you like Android, and if you don't, then take it back to try out the HD7. You get 15 days to try out the phone.
Well, I'd go with the MyTouch 4g, not because of looks, that's for sure (I dislike the way it looks), but it's got 4g so if you're going to be browsing the web a lot and using a lot of online services you're gonna want the 4g speeds. The HD7 has last generation hardware, it's using a processor from 2009, 1ghz is speedy and WP7 runs really smooth, but I wouldn't spend $200 on last generation hardware. The Nexus S has a super nice screen, but feels kind of cheap, yet overall it's the "true" Android experience(AOSP/Vanilla Android with no stupid skins from vendors).
I'd go with the MyTouch if you like the way it looks, if not, then I'd say the Nexus S and then lastly I'd say the HD7.

Well, let me lay it out for you plain and simple...
Youtube is pretty equal on all devices. Probably a bit better on the Android phones.
Texting...I gotta say that the keyboard on WP7, and more specifically the HD7, is amazing. I've used lots of other keyboards. My Omnia II has Swype, which to me is not as good as people make it out to be; I definitely prefer the HD7 keyboard to any alternatives. So there that is. Texting will be a snap on an HD7.
Calling is equal of course.
E-mail on all 3 phones is really good. I love the E-mail interface on WP7 though. Black on white plus Metro UI is super sleek and classy and the overall feel and efficiency of it is flawless. And again, the keyboard on HD7 is awesome.
Apps is more complicated. Marketplace already has almost 7,000 apps and they're mostly pretty damn good to awesome apps, with some crappy ones mixed in of course plus the XBOX Live Games. Android has lots of good apps and lots of duplicate apps. But of course, since Android has been out longer it's going to have more variety AT THIS MOMENT.
No need to hack much on the HD7, and the little things you do need to are simple changes like accent colors, registry editor, touchxplorer (file explorer) etc. The phone is already lag free and super efficient, which is more than I can say for the Android devices, which is why you NEED to hack them; they're laggy out of the box. They have more features out of the box at the moment, but our guys on here are working on lots of hacks to open up those features that are missing, and there's already quite a few hacks so you can hack those things if you feel like...
As for Netflix...I don't particularly care for it...but it's cool I guess.
Hope I helped.
I like Swype and which the MyTouch 4g also has. I have not used the Speech to Text for messages on the MyTouch 4g so I cannot comment on it.

[Q] Buy WP7 now or later?

Due to my touch screen slowly losing it's touch accuracy on my cracked screen I'm being forced to replace my Touch Pro 2 Verizon. I decided to go with the Fascinate which will be my second no WM phone and first since 2005 I believe. My contract is up in May as well. I decided against paying 80 or 90 to get a Omnia II or Imagio. I don't think I could stomach WM without a keyboard.
I am interested in WP7 but it seems to be in a very early stage. Verizon doesn't even have a WP7 device at all. I was surprised to see some complaint messages on VZW's own message board about the lack of devices.
Is it better for someone who like to fiddle with their phones a lot to wait until updates with IE9 and multitasking, maybe even new devices come out or do you think its pretty good to go ahead now? Will a techie be able to live with it day to day?
I have a WP7 device in my house but the female is pretty tight gripped with her phone but I have liked what I've seen.
Think about it this way. You already like what you have seen. Well, it WONT get worse. I used to hate my WM 6.5 keyboard, but it was because screen was resistive. I have a Samsung Focus and I love it. Once multitasking gets out there, it can only get better and better.
No other software company has a better potential to integrate an ecosystem than MS.
I believe Verizon will launch its first WP7 device in the coming weeks.

I quite like WP7 but wouldn't recommend it to a friend today. It depends on how patient you are as I don't think it will be mature before 2012. You should have a look at some older threads on the topic and see if you could cope with the issues people have with WP7.

Simple answer: The OP wants to upgrade, which means he will be tied to (or stuck with if he hates it) the phone for 2 years. Since WP7 is still lacking, there's really no rush. I'd say wait until Mango as not only will the OS be better but also new devices will be coming at that time.
Even if you love your phone (which I guess you do), you have to put that aside to give sound, useful advice and in that case I think it's better to wait.
If you can wait then hold out until Nokia launches. If you need one now then its not a bad os. Its nicer then iOS but the market place is a WP7 weakspot even as of now. If you don't need games then its pretty good.

I guess the main reason for me to wait is because of apps. I need Spotify and what my company is developing (only android and ios for now... but not for long)

No other software company has a better potential to integrate an ecosystem than MS.

what does that mean, without using more buzzwords in the explaination ?
Thanks everyone. I am going to have to wait in the short term anyways until my contract is up. I see Verizon is only coming out with the Trophy in the short term. I am going to debate to see if I want to leave them or not. I like the Arrive as I perfer keyboards if possible and it's essentially a Touch Pro 3 in at least hardware.

Hotmail, Windows Live services, Zune, XBOX Live, Windows Media Center, Windows 7/8, Office 2010/365, Cloud services (Skydrice, Sharepoint), Visual Studio, Silverlight, Bing, Yahoo, etc. No other company has this much software available to integrate seamlessly into one ecosystem like Microsoft can.

Should you switch from X to Y checklist:
Step 1a (on contract purchase) - See what your provider has to offer.
Step 1b (unlocked purchase) - See what is out there in your budget.
Step 2 - Make a list of all the tasks you accomplish on your current phone.
Step 3 - Make a list of all the tasks you would like to accomplish (wishlist).
Step 4 - Do the research.
Step 5 - Try before you buy.
If Windows Phone can do the things you need it to do now and you like it then take the plunge. Be very wary about purchasing a phone that cannot do what you need but will in the future; you may become very frustrated.
I love WP7 too and was going to get the Trophy but I ended up with a Defy (unlocked purchase). I needed Skype and Whatsapp so I will wait until Mango and get the one phone I have always wanted if it was not for its unattractive UI: Nokia!
Hi all
I think that this is the best time to buy an WP7 phone...
In my country (Greece) you can get HTC Trophy or LG Optimus 7 with 199 euros.....
For what those phones can offer this is an amazing price..
With the upcoming mango update and all those stuff that MIX has reveal the WP7 OS
will be a robust and mature enough mobile platform..
Guys ...dont forget 2 moths ago the price for those phones was arrount 500 euros...
IMO yes...this is the best time to buy an WP7 device
I just swapped my x10 with my new beautiful toy... HTC Mozart! Fantastic I will never waste money or time on Android or IOS again!

The fluidity of the OS in particular is important. Android is the ugly duckling of ios widgets alone creates no fluidity and it's laggy... Might be the x10, but don't think so. I've used the EnergyROMs (winmo 6.5) and it's far superior to both IOS and Android, but as you all know... Few apps and weak hardware. Can't wait for Mango!

Nexus S, Omnia 7 or HD7 ?

I was thinking of buying a new phone. At first, I was between Nexus S and Desire. I thought I'd go with Nexus S, but then I remembered that Windows Phone 7 also existed in this world.
So, which one I should pick? Nexus S and Omnia 7 both have a 4" AMOLED screen.
Opinions?
Edit: I want a good phone on which I can play good games and use good apps. I don't want it to lag. :x
BUMP! Come on people...
If you want apps and games the best choice would be Android or iOS. So Nexus S.
Hmmm yeah, but from what I've seen android doesn't have quality apps or games... Like... 10 apps/games from the whole market are worthy downloading/paying for.
I believe the apps and games on WP7 are "quality" apps though. Well, that's what the videos say.
Wp7 game over android game? ? Lol

Without thinking I can already name over 20 of each games/apps that are worth downloading. Go look at the market at appbrain.com and see for yourself.
If you are willing to pay for games then I'd probably say that the games are better on WP7 and they are only getting better with a lot of good releases every week.
I have android and WP7 (SE X10 and Omnia 7)
Nexus S imo, androids market getting better from day to day
W7 is a little too closed for me so I'd say nexus S All the I do like WP7 alot!
If you are going to get a HD7 you may as well get a HD2 instead. Very similar specs and apps galore due to all the O/Ses that run on the HD2 including WP7.
