[Q] Buying new mobile - still undecided. - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
i've spent a few days reading in these forums before i finally registered myself to get some help.
I'm currently on an iPhone 3G running together with a Macintosh and I'm finally planning to get rid of the iPhone.
My general thoughts were to leave the iOS System and get an Android Device, although lately WP7 also caught up my attention but I just think it can't keep up with Android.
I build this Mindmap to compare all the advantages and disadvantages of the operating systems and devices, and I would be thankful if anyone could add some points to the map, or even clarify things if I have missunderstood something.

My Priorities are on the following points:
- design
- smoothness of the whole user experience
- tethering
- customization
- adding music/movie/picture content from mac os x (since all contact/calendar information is now synced in the cloud)
And while I don't yet understand what the difference between the 2 billion different firmwares presented on this site is, I think I could work myself into the whole topic, and flash my device (E.g. to make the Galaxy S smoother).

P.S.: Note that this Mindmap represents my own thinking of what is an advantage and what is not. E.g. I put the App Store thing as a negative of the iPhone, since there are just primitive apps and no system-affecting apps like on cydia etc.

I bought a iPhone 4 and owned it for two months and returned it almost IMMEDIATELY after playing with a android os phone ... apple ripped off a ton of stuff from android a called it apple innovations

The Galaxy S could be my choice, since it has 2 cameras and Gingerbread could offer some "FaceTime" alternative ... but we've got that lousy Firmware support from Samsung, so I don't know when we can expect a official Gingerbread for the Galaxy S I9000 :/

[Q] From IOS to Android 4.0

I am a current iphone 4 user (jailbroken ) and like many other i am very much tempted by the Galaxy S3.
I've read a couple of thread on this forum about moving from ios to iphone however none really answers my main concerns.
A quick question: I read somewhere ( On lifehacker, msg me if you want to full link , its my first post so im not allowed to paste URLs) that all in all JAILBROKEN iphone is better at customization than Android.
Probably not out of the box but mainly because :"... rooting is about as big of a headache as breaking into a bank vault with a safety pin. You have over 100 different Android phones out there, each with its own rooting method, caveats, and risks that you have to research. It's so annoying that we had to turn our rooting guide into a guide for only the top 10 phones, in addition to tacking on an exhaustive glossary of all the crap you have to know before starting the process. "
On iphone , i have cydia. meaning i can install / remove tweaks one at a time without the need to root the whole damn device for a single feature every time.
My question to the pros and/or those who already did the migration.... Do you really miss some tweaking capabilities ? is everything really easier on a jailbroken iphone ?

You should go with the Samsung Galaxy S III, you'll like it over the iPhone. It will be easy to root or add a custom rom to. I will be getting it, but currently have the Samsung Galaxy S II on Sprint and it has been very easy to hack. Some things are even automatic! Android has a wider range of what you can do with it too.

I wouldn't classify myself as an "ex-ios user", but I have used many iPhones/iPod touches. To be honest, I really don't miss any options from iOS (most of them - and many more - are included in android). The only thing (more like a variety instead of "option") is that iOS usually gets more games than android (or at least gets them first).

Since you already did a jailbreak, we'll assume you are technically competent.
Your first steps after root (AR) will be slow, so as not to screw anything up too badly. Keep xda handy, just in case. Look at Droid-life. They'll be all over the SGS3.
Eventually, you'll wonder why you didn't act sooner.

In my opinion iOS is almost perfect. And Android has yet to reach that point. This the reason that Apple fights jailbreaking its phones with so much commitment. Whereas, Google and manufacturers really encourage the development of android. iPhone is extremely smooth in operation and function whereas to achieve that on 95 percent of Android phones, you'd have to install a custom rom which might still be in testing stage and still not perfect. Even if you remove all the bloatware on android phones manually, it will still be not as fast as a custom rom. So in short, Apple has perfected their platform for the iPhone whereas Google has yet to do so. But thats where the fun lies, in experimenting with things you don't know. So the feature I miss the most would be an opportunity to experiment a great deal, which is there in Android but not in iOS. But if you look at hardware specs, SIII definitely takes the cake cos its quad core. Apple already has the smoothest performing device but imo, it will soon respond to that. Also, many apps are made first for iOS and then for Android. Lastly, Android devices confuse the customer because there is so much of pointless variation in devices whereas there is just one great iPhone. So you have to keep that in mind as well

Also I think it's much more practical to have all your tweaks and hacks available in one place ( cydia ) then having to go read countless forums in search for one....

Not possible. Different devices have different tweaks and hacks. Plus, the android tweaks are much different. It's not just some overlay to make your phone look different...some of them make deep deep changes to your entire system.
The type of customization you are talking about can be done through the play store. Just install a new launcher and each launcher has tons of themes available.

I NEVER owned an Iphone and only use nothing but android phone up until I have my new Ipad. My current devices are, Sprint Evo 4G LTE (sprint version of one x), Motorola xoom, and the new ipad. My wife have the Og EVO 4g, daughter with the Epic 4G and my son now have the Ipod touch 4th generation.
As you can see in my household Android rule and I have quite a bit of experience with android rooting and customization. Can't speak for the IOS in the Iphone (I'm assuming there the same) but up unitl I purchase the new Ipad and was swore that Android devices is so much better in customization than IOS, I was wrong. After jailbreaking my new Ipad and still learning all the tweak you can do inside cydia, it is so enjoyable and effortless, not saying android isn't fun, it is indeed.
What I like about IOS over android is how opitmized each and every apps that is out for both platform. Every apps and games I played on IOS that are also on Android runs ten times better than android. Were talking about web browsing to 3d games everything is silky smooth. Heck even my son jailbreak Ipod is very smooth compare to my flagship android Evo 4G LTE. I will continue to use both platform as long as it suit my needs but my advice is don't give up one platform for another just because of what you've heard. Try it out first and then asked yourself which platform you've perferred the most. For me I like them both in there own ways, just my two cents.

Apple is a closed system ... This is why having an iPhone is a true custom galley ... iTunes update every week day with the jailbreak that jumps ... Short! The big ****!
Since I bought my first Android phone (Nexus S), I found my freedom, I can customize as much as I want my phone. The act of unlocking the phone is primarily for setting much further and for a fan of flash and custom system (custom rom, Cyanogen, MIUI,...).
After a lot cheaper and just as powerful and polyvalant, with a better overlay, Verily I advise you the HTC One X or One S.
The Galaxy S III looks good but I have trouble with the side too plastic and fingerprints at will ... The AMOLED screen is for me to lower quality than the SLCD.

With my "HTC One X," I month, I am delighted, only a little autonomy default. Side and top design is integrated with the battery.

In android there are good and bad sides.
Bad is that there are still lag, bugs and shut down. But greater side there is many phones you can choose and Specs are better than iPhone 4. There are 1 major thing that annoys my gear that is: there is so many phones and so few updates, like in old phones there is no update to Android 4.0, but in iOS there is that iPhone 3g have iOS 5.0. Few games dont run in android to There are complicated parts and great parts about android

From what I understand, out of the box android is much more "customizable" , but apps and games look much better on IOS ( and is a much more stable system )

An original system in Ice Cream Sandwich as well as a running IOS, games and application included. There had gaps before, but now Google has caught up.

I don't see what your worried about. Just find the xda wiki for your device and everything is right there. Most devices have easy peasy hacking tools (one click everything is installed) and some of the stuff you have to hack your iPhone for (themes,a keyboard change) is stock android. You might even not want to bother with rooting your android phone for a while.

Rooting will alloy you to modify anything and everything, basically. Otherthings to note that make most android devices better, ability to remove battery without voiding warranty/worrying about killing your phone, most have mSD slot for expandable/removable additional memory, LARGER screens, some have physical keyboards, no iTUNES BS!!!, can plug in and drag/drop anything everything you want, more custom roms than you know what to do with, etc. The list goes on and on. I have never/will never own an iFail device. Have used them, and I have to say even my pretty basic media/music players are WAY less compicated than iFail devices. If you want to "sync" to more than one computer, NO PROBLEM, You want to flash a new rom/radio, etc, NO PROBLEM.
Even if there is no physicaly qwerty keyboard, it is nice having more than one button to do all the work.
For me, being a PC person (mostly Linux, some Windoze) having to iTunes just to be able to "sync", modify, load, whatever on to a device is recockulous.
Besides the fact, that you can almost buy a NEW, no extended contract phone for the price of an iFail with a contract should tell you something as well.

Big yes,it's one of the major reasons people are willing to void their warranty. Lag fixes are a big part of custom roms, some even remove android features just to hit impossible benchmarks and fluidity. Of course, a good balance of features and speed is my recommendation,you'll love it.

Why switch to Android from iPhone

In the current smartphone boom, Android has its major share in smartphone users. iPhone was the king, but Android has surely dethroned it. Pricing is definitely one of the major factor. Following are few more factors to switch to an Android device from iPhone. What are your take on this.
1. Android has robust notification system. Unlike the iPhone, Android has a single notification system that developers can tap into when developing applications.
2. The web browser, Android browser is very fast unlike safari on iPhone. My experience. Android browser also supports flash which is a bonus for game lovers.
3. Android is a Open source system. Much to the delight of developers.They more control over how they can customize the Android devices.
4. Recently Samsung Galaxy S3 is released by all 5 carriers in US which is awesome. iPhone is locked with At&T. No Multiple carriers for iPhone.
5. Android device is packed with loads of Google applications.If you are a Gmail user then it allows you to easily manage your contacts on either your phone or the desktop

Android as you say is open source and highly customisable. Custom ROMS, kernals, bootloaders... etc, People can work together to get the most out of an android device while the iPhone is kinda restricted and you can hardly do anything to change it. Unless you jailbreak an iPhone, I don't see it as anywhere near as good as android.
I actually switched just for the galaxy nexus as I wanted the reputable frequent updates to the phone which I know google can provide. Today I just updated to Jelly Bean and the only problem I had with Android vs iPhone was the animation lag. That has now been fixed and I can't think of a single reason to go back to the iPhone.

Well, the biggest argument for we was the bigger screen size of Android devices!

The iPhone is on AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and starting to push out to multiple regional carriers.
I have my SII and an iPhone for work. I will never get rid of Android. I hate my iPhone!
I also talked my most of my family and believe it or not one of the main reasons they switch widgets...

well, iphone it's simple to use, beautiful, and ready to use out of the box.
it's the perfect phone for the noobs, old parents, ecc.
android is high customizable, you can do with it what do you want, it's perfect for al those people who know how to use computer and tecnology.
if you have an iphone and you get bored, that means it's time to buy an android phone.

So here is my question..
What made you jump to the Android platform?
What phone did you come from?
What was wrong?
Why?
For me: I had used 3 iPhones, (3GS, 4, 4S). After close to a year with the iPhone I saw how boring it was to see the icons. Over and over again.
Then I deceided to get the latest of android at the time. The Galaxy Nexus with 4.0 :thumbup: But comming from an iPhone, I missed the quantity and the quality of the apps. But soon I got used to it.
My future of android phones, HTC One X, Galaxy Note and the S4.
So far my impressions are very good on Android but when I used to jailbreak my iPhone the quality of Cydia tweaks over the 'mods' and ROMs for Android devices.
I hope people find this useful.

I come from symbian, android and the quality is exceptional by comparison, are more than satisfied!

I've always been a fan of various Linux distros so I have a better understanding of whats going on inside my HTC One V phone (now with CM 10.1 ) so I've always thought Android was the way to go. Most Linux based OS/apps usually have an awesome community (like xda dev) to help with any problems that may pop up.

I came to Android from Symbian OS, I had Nokia 5230 for 3 years before, and I got bored of it's slow performance, and low RAM, so I decided to upgrade it to Samsung Galaxy S3, which was a great step I think, and I learned many things with my Samsung, so now I am not that stupid beginner on Android which I was before.

I switched because I felt there weren't as many cool apps with the iPhone as there are with androids. I haven't missed my iPhone yet.

Because symbian is dead.

Because the only alternative at the time was iOS. Windows looked too ugly and didn't function how i wanted it to.
I came from a winmo 6.5 HTC HD2. (tmobile nl branded one, so I couldnt even get the newest firmware to flash android onto it.) Eventually, the marketplace was shut down. Which wasnt that big of a problem if you have no issue with piracy. But then the microphone broke, and I decided it was time for a new phone.
And Android gave me choices, iOS doesn't. So there was never any real 'choice', which is fine I'm perfectly happy with Android.
So it became the s3 (no MicroSD = no buy. So HTC ONE was as little of an option as the iPhone. )
Now eagerly awaiting the Note 3.

Htc touch pro. Because the windows mobile is dying and less application makes me feel its a boring system .no playful games such some game loft game in android now! But some how I still miss it .cause it can make video call by network ,not video chat in application now.

When the time came to make a choice, I chose the Android platform.
Many of the people I knew at the time that were using the Windows platform had many complaints and problems.
I knew little about the iOS phones, but I'm happy I chose Android.
I've had zero problems!

I myself was sick of iOS and pretty much having to have the new phone to run the new versions of the apps, which was total bs, not to mention the whole thing just started freezing up after awhile just cause it was 'old', I would literally have to throw it on the ground (carpeted) then reboot it just to get it running again for a few minutes. Never seen that problem with android, hell my boyfriend was running s2 up until a month or two ago when he got the htc one, not once did I see it lockup.

If you backup to icloud you can export your contact list as a Vcard and import it on your new phone easy... Thats what I did, I had the 3gs and 4s and was just tired of chasing the next jailbreak.

"Jumped" to Android because it's open source, Google owns it, I can do whatever I want with it ( Nexus 4 ), etc...
iOS devices are not choice, thay never was, never will.

WebOS
I switched from WebOS (Palm). I enjoyed the phone Palm Pre+, but the OS was severely limited and did not catch on as HP had hoped it would. It was small, fast (for it's time) and had good storage 16gb. It is still my MP3 player, why buy an apple product if you have something that works.

From 2003 onwards I was using Symbian from s60v2 to Anna till 2009, I was very used to Symbian as it also supported off market apps of java and sis /sisx(side load), I was well aware of all the tricks in that OS. But Nokia has never changed it's interface.
Then I switch to Android seeing no development is going in Symbian OS and Nokia people are migrating to MS

First of all, I am new here. I joined with the vision of getting my question answered, but then i fell over some other threads, and found this forum exciting. So i might stick around for awhile.

Brief:
I currently am in the situation where.. Yes, I am sick of my iPhone.
It's a GREAT phone! It's fast, stylish, and durable (atleast so far!).
But i miss the lack of customization.
Untill last december, i've had android phones. However, back then they were slow. The fastest one I've had, was a Galaxy S II. It was fast back then, but when i use my friend's now, it's so laggy and edgy.
I am really considering getting an Android. But there's a few things holding me back..
iPhone
+ I have an iPhone 5. It's fast.
+ My iPhone 5 is stylish.
+ I have 2 MacBook Pro's, an iMac, Apple TV, iPod and an iPad. So i fear the communication between Android and them.
+ The applications. I personally find Appstore filled with higher-of-quality applications.
+ iCloud. It stores my contacts and stuff. But Android's got an alternative for that tho.
+ iMessage. I love being able to chat from my macbook to iPhones, without confuse. And fast iPhone-to-iPhone chat without the recievant have to download specific software.
+ Reputation. Call me childish, but i just find it "cooler" to have an iPhone..
- Screensize. God it's starting to annoy me. I like having a big badass phone.
- Features. I personally think that the iPhone 5 lacks features.
+/- Jailbreak. Jailbreaking the iPhone gives it alot of awesome features! But having the need to jailbreak it, sucks. Also it makes it impossible to update to the newest immediately. Also yet jailbroken, the system is still very limited. Also it takes a lot of time for it to come out. I haven't had my phone jailbroken for 8 months.
Android
++ CUSTOMIZATION!
++ The freedom to do basically what you want with the phone.
+ Screensize; I find the iPhone 5 screen a tat too small. I miss a bigger size phone, eg the Galaxy S II.
- I fear the speed? Will they be as snappy as i am used to on my iPhone?
- Durability. I remember the old Android phones went slow in just a few weeks due to cache's and stuff. How does that seem now?
+ Features. I think that most Android phones have got some very interesting features. Eg: One Blink Feed, Note 3 S-Pen, S3/4 eye-motion detector.
+ No-jailbreak. Altho Android have the ability to get rooted, it's not necessary (unless you want flashed ROM's). I find that great for my needs, since i love customizing and changing my homescreen-layout / phone functionality on a day-to-day basis. Also iPhone jailbreaks takes a lot of time to come out.
I am very unsure of what to do. It's very hard!
I really like my iPhone, but i miss the lack of customization.
My heart tells me to keep my iPhone, but my brain and inner-geek tells me to go fetch an android.
If it was up to me, i'd have both. But i don't have the money to get a new Android and keep my iPhone. Then i will have to sell my iPhone first.
Could you guys possible give me some aspects and viewpoints on this? I am open for critiques, since i am not coloured of "what's better or worse". I just want personal views.
Also, have anyone gone from iPhone 5 to Android? And did you regret it? (Which i am afraid that i MAYBE will).
And if you advice me to get an Android: Which one?

From what I think, iOS is child's play in comparison to Android.
Howell iPhones are indeed fast, stylish, etc, the OS won't ever give you control of things.
Apple has it's stuff working together well and so, but the price ofcourse, is to it.
Going through your points, you can make yourself a conclusion, this is just my view on things:
Speed
Android can be as fast as you want it to be, only if you are willing to spend the money on it which you would've spend on an iPhone. Also, making tweaks or changes to your system (You're on XDA anyway) helps greatly in this process.
Keep in mind that Apple has only few devices to optimize their system for, while Android is changed to work on a specific device.
Sync
I have to agree here that Apple has the syncs sorted out better. On Android this is a bit messier, but still working very well when you've got everything up and running. The main reason for this, is that Android is existing more and more out of fragments rather than a fullyfixed system.
Apps
Ofcourse the Appstore is filled with way more quality apps; Apple doesn't allow all Apps to there store. It's part of their policy. Where Google only removes apps from their Store, Apple only allows apps to their store.
Also I kinda like that Google makes their apps available to iOS, which I've barely seen the other way.
Messaging
iMessage is great, but since a few months, Hangouts has the same features plus more! And best of it, it's nearly standard packed (older devices will have to update Talk) with the system.
Durability
Android phones are in my opinion better in getting a new life than iOS phones. Ensurely when you're rooted/unlocked. Phones that have been all forgotten about by their manufacturers (also Apple does this) can still be up to date and smooth thanks to the great devs around. It may take some bravery, but that's completely on to yourself.
The other points not covered by these are more subjective I think.
Like I said, take your own conclusions from this and let me hear what it'll be!

Where Android phones in the same price scale, will top at quad core with double the speeds. RAM too.

Apple vs Android - Why Did You Pick Who Your Pick?

So, with all the new tech announced and released the last couple of weeks, it gave me an idea to do something a bit different and rather than just covering the devices, actually getting YOUR input on why you guys like Android over iPhone and vice-versa after actually be asked and not random arguments in YouTube comments. Be sure to leave a comment with your reasoning behind what you pick whilst keeping yourself from being completely biased if you can.

I had an iPhone and switched over to Android and probably won't ever go back. The amount of customisation and mods you can make on Android is incredible, plus if you're not incredibly tech savvy even a custom ROM can give someone everything they'd want in a phone in a way that a jailbroken iPhone just never could for me,
Just wish there was a public release of something I came across a few months ago called "Cider for Android" which let iOS apps run natively on Android. Would be cool to have the option to have both kinds of apps on a single device.

I love everything you can do on an Android that you can't on an iPhone. Customizations, rooting, custom ROMS, being free from iTunes, etc.

Well I came back to Apple
Well my first smartphone was 3 GS jailbroken. Ran good, but customization sucked, even with cydia. So got a Desire HD, and Played around with different ROMS. It was cool for a while, then got Samsung Note, and Note 2. they were both ok, but not that many ROMs for them. So when I got sick of that, went back to an iPhone 5. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. Functionality is the main reason I went back I guess, asa with Android, if you customized it you had to almost always give something up.

U didnt tried a nexus ?
Root + xposed is only thing needed to achieve extreme customization without giving up anything...
I would try a iphone 5s if my dad allows me to exchange my nexus 5 wid it....lol

Chose android because there's so much more you can do with it it seems. Like when it comes to customization. You can choose different ROMs, kernals, etc. Just seem to have more freedom on android.

Originally I went with Android simply because I didn't like Apple/iTunes. I've always preferred PCs, and iTunes is one of the worst programs created (along with Real Player and Windows Vista). It wasn't until later on I learned the limitations of iOS outside of jailbreaking, short battery life, lack of 3rd party keyboards, and other such things. As time went on, I was increasingly happy I went with Android. I had LTE while everybody's iPhones topped out at 14.4Mb/s 3G. Expanding storage cost way less (and still does). Apple kickstarted the smartphone market; they weren't the first, but they were the ones that spurred on the revolution. But refusing to evolve outside their own little box that they prided themselves on thinking outside of made them fall way behind.
Obviously, many people will still and always love iPhones. The larger screens of the 6 and 6 Plus are obvious confessions by Apple that they've had their head up their collective ass for years. 4 years ago Steve Jobs said nobody will buy a phone that big (referring to the "huge" 4.3" screen of the Motorola Droid X). Samsung proved him wrong 3 years ago with the Galaxy S2, then the Note series, and have been proving him wrong ever since.
Frankly, I think iOS is just fine as an operating system. Is it the OS for me? Hell no. But I can't deny that it's well designed, well rounded, and nobody can deny the apps and games available for it. And if I had to, I could "get by" with an iPhone, since it will do pretty much anything I would want a smartphone to do throughout my day. But I also know I'd grow bored with it, and frustrated that I can't modify/customize/optimize it like I can an Android phone. And I'd never actually pay for an iPhone, unless it was an absurdly good deal (and I'd probably resell it anyway).

I went with Android over apple because my friend had just got the new Galaxy Nexus back in 2011 and he was talking about how badass it was and how you could root it and unlock it so after I saw his I had to get my own and I also was told that you cant install roms on Apple phones.

Android... Widgets, customizations, opened system... And definitely hardware. I had iPhone and this is not bad device but not for me.

I think up till now iPhone was the way to go. As much as android might have customisability and whatnot Apple was always superior in the UI and experience department in my opinion. However L is going a long way and will change things I think

I think both OS have their benefits, which I won't go into because it's a long-winded talk we've all heard before. I used to use Apple and liked it fine. Eventually it slowed down after an iOS update and it became out-of-date and I got frustrated with it. Moved over to Android and I like it, though it's not without faults. The main thing I like about Android is the ability to get another battery instead of relying on Apple's in-house repairs and service.

The operating system no longer reaches Appel Android, but it has going for it ... a very important therefore it is designed only for your own devices, while Galaxy is an android devices, all with different specifications, measurements, etc ...

Apple is too overpriced, i would pick an iPhone for €400 and a good Android phone for €400 also.
Tablets will be forever Android.

Went for Android because they had more choice in hardware and were more configurable.
Leaning towards the Windows phone atm though...
