[Q] From IOS to Android 4.0 - General Questions and Answers

Hello
I am a current iphone 4 user (jailbroken ) and like many other i am very much tempted by the Galaxy S3.
I've read a couple of thread on this forum about moving from ios to iphone however none really answers my main concerns.
A quick question: I read somewhere ( On lifehacker, msg me if you want to full link , its my first post so im not allowed to paste URLs) that all in all JAILBROKEN iphone is better at customization than Android.
Probably not out of the box but mainly because :"... rooting is about as big of a headache as breaking into a bank vault with a safety pin. You have over 100 different Android phones out there, each with its own rooting method, caveats, and risks that you have to research. It's so annoying that we had to turn our rooting guide into a guide for only the top 10 phones, in addition to tacking on an exhaustive glossary of all the crap you have to know before starting the process. "
On iphone , i have cydia. meaning i can install / remove tweaks one at a time without the need to root the whole damn device for a single feature every time.
My question to the pros and/or those who already did the migration.... Do you really miss some tweaking capabilities ? is everything really easier on a jailbroken iphone ?
Thanks , my first post

The only thing true from that statement is that a different rooting method may be required for a different device. An iPhone (jailbroken or not) can never be as customizable as an android device (sometimes even stock). You do not have to "root a device...for a single feature every time." Once you root a device (and don't unroot - intentionally, firmware update, ect.), you will never have to root it again. For android, there are no missing tweaking capabilities - you can do anything you want (unlike the iPhone).

You should go with the Samsung Galaxy S III, you'll like it over the iPhone. It will be easy to root or add a custom rom to. I will be getting it, but currently have the Samsung Galaxy S II on Sprint and it has been very easy to hack. Some things are even automatic! Android has a wider range of what you can do with it too.

Thank you for your info
If some of you are ex-ios users, could you please let me know what options from ios you miss the most ?

I wouldn't classify myself as an "ex-ios user", but I have used many iPhones/iPod touches. To be honest, I really don't miss any options from iOS (most of them - and many more - are included in android). The only thing (more like a variety instead of "option") is that iOS usually gets more games than android (or at least gets them first).

Since you already did a jailbreak, we'll assume you are technically competent.
Your first steps after root (AR) will be slow, so as not to screw anything up too badly. Keep xda handy, just in case. Look at Droid-life. They'll be all over the SGS3.
Eventually, you'll wonder why you didn't act sooner.
Enjoy!

In my opinion iOS is almost perfect. And Android has yet to reach that point. This the reason that Apple fights jailbreaking its phones with so much commitment. Whereas, Google and manufacturers really encourage the development of android. iPhone is extremely smooth in operation and function whereas to achieve that on 95 percent of Android phones, you'd have to install a custom rom which might still be in testing stage and still not perfect. Even if you remove all the bloatware on android phones manually, it will still be not as fast as a custom rom. So in short, Apple has perfected their platform for the iPhone whereas Google has yet to do so. But thats where the fun lies, in experimenting with things you don't know. So the feature I miss the most would be an opportunity to experiment a great deal, which is there in Android but not in iOS. But if you look at hardware specs, SIII definitely takes the cake cos its quad core. Apple already has the smoothest performing device but imo, it will soon respond to that. Also, many apps are made first for iOS and then for Android. Lastly, Android devices confuse the customer because there is so much of pointless variation in devices whereas there is just one great iPhone. So you have to keep that in mind as well

A jailbreak will never compare to stock ice cream sandwitch in a galaxy nexus (Google Phone) in customization. Sure ios is more fluid, but then,it's only the one list of apps. It's simplicity is why it can never be properly compared to android. Android isn't complex though,it's just fun. Ios is your granpa with wisdom and unlimited long sleeved shirts. Android is you're cool uncle with tatoos and a Harley. Totally different, but both have their appeal.

Also I think it's much more practical to have all your tweaks and hacks available in one place ( cydia ) then having to go read countless forums in search for one....

Not possible. Different devices have different tweaks and hacks. Plus, the android tweaks are much different. It's not just some overlay to make your phone look different...some of them make deep deep changes to your entire system.
The type of customization you are talking about can be done through the play store. Just install a new launcher and each launcher has tons of themes available.

I NEVER owned an Iphone and only use nothing but android phone up until I have my new Ipad. My current devices are, Sprint Evo 4G LTE (sprint version of one x), Motorola xoom, and the new ipad. My wife have the Og EVO 4g, daughter with the Epic 4G and my son now have the Ipod touch 4th generation.
As you can see in my household Android rule and I have quite a bit of experience with android rooting and customization. Can't speak for the IOS in the Iphone (I'm assuming there the same) but up unitl I purchase the new Ipad and was swore that Android devices is so much better in customization than IOS, I was wrong. After jailbreaking my new Ipad and still learning all the tweak you can do inside cydia, it is so enjoyable and effortless, not saying android isn't fun, it is indeed.
What I like about IOS over android is how opitmized each and every apps that is out for both platform. Every apps and games I played on IOS that are also on Android runs ten times better than android. Were talking about web browsing to 3d games everything is silky smooth. Heck even my son jailbreak Ipod is very smooth compare to my flagship android Evo 4G LTE. I will continue to use both platform as long as it suit my needs but my advice is don't give up one platform for another just because of what you've heard. Try it out first and then asked yourself which platform you've perferred the most. For me I like them both in there own ways, just my two cents.

Apple is a closed system ... This is why having an iPhone is a true custom galley ... iTunes update every week day with the jailbreak that jumps ... Short! The big ****!
Since I bought my first Android phone (Nexus S), I found my freedom, I can customize as much as I want my phone. The act of unlocking the phone is primarily for setting much further and for a fan of flash and custom system (custom rom, Cyanogen, MIUI,...).
After a lot cheaper and just as powerful and polyvalant, with a better overlay, Verily I advise you the HTC One X or One S.
The Galaxy S III looks good but I have trouble with the side too plastic and fingerprints at will ... The AMOLED screen is for me to lower quality than the SLCD.
GS3: AMOLED+
HTC ONE X: Super LCD
With my "HTC One X," I month, I am delighted, only a little autonomy default. Side and top design is integrated with the battery.

Xda has everything in one place. no?

Great
In android there are good and bad sides.
Bad is that there are still lag, bugs and shut down. But greater side there is many phones you can choose and Specs are better than iPhone 4. There are 1 major thing that annoys my gear that is: there is so many phones and so few updates, like in old phones there is no update to Android 4.0, but in iOS there is that iPhone 3g have iOS 5.0. Few games dont run in android to There are complicated parts and great parts about android

From what I understand, out of the box android is much more "customizable" , but apps and games look much better on IOS ( and is a much more stable system )

I don't see what your worried about. Just find the xda wiki for your device and everything is right there. Most devices have easy peasy hacking tools (one click everything is installed) and some of the stuff you have to hack your iPhone for (themes,a keyboard change) is stock android. You might even not want to bother with rooting your android phone for a while.

Will rooting make my phone generally faster ?
because its IOS its the other way around. jailbreaking tends to slow down ur phone

Rooting will alloy you to modify anything and everything, basically. Otherthings to note that make most android devices better, ability to remove battery without voiding warranty/worrying about killing your phone, most have mSD slot for expandable/removable additional memory, LARGER screens, some have physical keyboards, no iTUNES BS!!!, can plug in and drag/drop anything everything you want, more custom roms than you know what to do with, etc. The list goes on and on. I have never/will never own an iFail device. Have used them, and I have to say even my pretty basic media/music players are WAY less compicated than iFail devices. If you want to "sync" to more than one computer, NO PROBLEM, You want to flash a new rom/radio, etc, NO PROBLEM.
Even if there is no physicaly qwerty keyboard, it is nice having more than one button to do all the work.
For me, being a PC person (mostly Linux, some Windoze) having to iTunes just to be able to "sync", modify, load, whatever on to a device is recockulous.
Besides the fact, that you can almost buy a NEW, no extended contract phone for the price of an iFail with a contract should tell you something as well.

Big yes,it's one of the major reasons people are willing to void their warranty. Lag fixes are a big part of custom roms, some even remove android features just to hit impossible benchmarks and fluidity. Of course, a good balance of features and speed is my recommendation, you'll love it.

Android vs Maemo 5 - what are your thoughts?

I have been a big fan of android since the pre cupcake days and have really enjoyed watching android grow becoming bigger and better all the time.
Its almost contract renewal time and im unsure what to do. the obvious choice would be the desire, but its lack of physical keyboard and complicated way to gain root are bad points. the other choice would be the nokia n900 running maemo 5. it has a physical keyboard and is very easy to gain root access.
So im stuck and thought i would ask the community to share their thoughts on both devices and systems to create a list of pros and cons.
Any comments you wish to share would be great. Thanks
hi, my friend has an n900 and to be honest as much as I hate Nokia that piece of hardware is solid. resistive touchsceeen is very responsive to touch. it really feels as capacitive plus you get the accuracy of the stylus. and obviously the hard keyboard.
but, talking about maemo... its ugly. I felt it wasn't finished and thought through. as a sense UI user I felt it was a tipical bold and ugly Nokia UI. I'd compare it as XP to Windows7.
on the other hand the guy is a programmer and the things he showed me he programmed for his Nokia were impressive. full Linux.
Sent from my HTC Hero using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I understand what you mean about meamo seeming appearing unfinished. maybe it will grow as android has? but it doesnt have the popularity so perhaps its worth sticking with android. i dont know lol.
pros for maemo so far are; that root is simple, theme installation is easy, backups without entering recovery mode. hacking and programming appears to be closer to debian. (to be honest that doesnt effect me as im not a programmer but its obviously going to be usefull to alot of people)
cons; nokia , not android, confusing ui, ovi store has lack of good apps, no xda support.
I have no clue about Nokia but I know there's no big developer support. if Desire is too complicated to root, why don't you consider Nexus one? Besides that it's also the phone that will receive new OS updates FIRST.... see upcoming Android 2.2 - and if you want a QWERTY then wait for Nexus two. And there's also the QWERTY phone from Motorola (which btw are also doing the N2)
****! I can't believe I'm recommending Android devices. But I'm innocent... Microsoft made me do it!
Well having them both for a couple of days I've kept the Desire. I have it for almost a month and I still can't stop playing with it. It's so polished and so fast. The single best cellphone I've ever used. N900 has it's own advantages, but it's too unpolished and doesn't have enough developer support to be my primary phone. It's good as a secondary phone for experimenting, but as a main phone the desire is the one to beat.
And it took me 15-20 mins to root the desire and it is my first root. So not that complicated. Top tip: use paul's r3 root method (using a tinycore linux live cd) for minimal problems. Windows only method can be a little jerky from user to user.
I'd wait for a nice android phone with qwerty. infact that's exactly what I'm doing while having fun with Hero. )

i like the sound of this. i seem to be very mistaken about the desire being hard to root.
As the N900 was compared to a mobile computer by Nokia themselves i think it's self explanatory. You can't compare these two Operating Systems as Maemo focuses on open-ness and easyness to port stuff that's based on Qt for example. (I guess that's the reason why they chose to use resistive TS, easier to use desktop-like apps)
Android on the other hand, focuses on making use easier for the end-user, open-ness is just a nice side feature of it, but Apps should be based on the APIs google provides, however you are allowed to do anything with them
I also have a Desire and im finding it to be a really nice phone, there are a few niggles but most things can be sorted with an application or a bit of searching. It's better now i have rooted it as all my applications are now stored on my SD card instead of on the limited memory. I found the guide from Nimbu to be a very easy and quick guide to follow. You should be able to find it on google since i cant post the link from being a new user
will have a look for that guide when i have some spare time. thanks

I had an N900 for about 4 weeks before the Nexus One was released. I really loved that device. Like others are saying, it feels solid. Screen is beautiful, and who can complain about 32 gigs built in, with another 8+ on the miniSD. Browsing = Awesome with full flash support. Stereo speakers sound great. QWERTY keyboard is a little bit of a bummer cause the top row is so close to the case. And the earbuds sound FANTASTIC! Better then some I've purchased from electronics stores.
Here's the real bummer. Nokia didn't capitalize on the N900 as much as they could have. Their shipping and support from NokiaUSA was abysmal. (I ordered when the site said 'IN STOCK' and after 3 weeks I cancelled the order and purchased one via eBay).
I wish I could say I was pleased with Maemo 5. The N900 comes with a few good apps, and more can be found through the Ovi store (when it was working).
I'd say stick with Android for this simple reason. It seems Nokia is letting the N900 die on the vine and has left everything about the device up to the Maemo community. They've even made statements regarding coming out with other smart mobile devices (Nokia N8) and is putting effort into a new version of Symbian.
If you are a Linux dev and would like to have fun coding for your own device, you can't ask for a better smartphone.
If you enjoy the Android platform, the variety of apps available in the market, and love the XDA forums then you'll be happier with an Android device.
I've stopped looking at non HTC devices for the sole reason of xda forums.

Maemo minus intel's x86 = the suck
with x86 and you could run linux programs and windows programs with wine. It would however be alot less phone like than Android.
Android is already growing fast every month. Problem is the Java layer and compiling for Arm.
Maemo's only real hope is x86 for phone. If that happens however I'd get it in a heart beat. Old games like Baldur's gate would be easy enough for anyone to get working. Otherwise it's just a me too operating system. Like BEOS.

It has a few ports of old games running well now. Transposrt tycoon runs well on the n900.
Just don't know if I can leave android. There's so much developer support that android constantly evolves. I love it
From what I have seen, Meamo doesn't seem to change. And app development appears to be very slow. On the ovi store, and other sources, new apps or updates don't often arrive.
Maemo
From comparisons and ability to customize things on the phone Maemo seems to be the best. I own an Omnia SCH-i910 with WM6 but am keeping an eye on Maemo OS phones hoping they take off.
What I want most from my phone besides features is open source program compatibility and ability to customize interface, ICS, and data access.
I have used the N900 for a while and just recently picked up the Vibrant (Galaxy S). There are many features I miss from the N900/Maemo. A huge one is universal, standard commands such as ctrl+c,x,v, etc. It was so easy to select text with the stylus then manipulate with keyboard shortcuts. Copying and pasting text on the Vibrant has been a bad experience in comparison.
Another major thing that the Maemo OS does better IMO is multitasking. It has true multitasking, and switching between and closing applications is intuitive and very well implemented. However, the way Android does things probably helps battery life, and after getting used to it I have no complaints.
For me, Android is an overall better choice due to its practicality for every day use. What I like more about the N900/Maemo is its multitasking and that it is literally a mini linux PC, yielding much more control and functionality for power users.

Anyone can easily install "Easy Debian" from the maemo.org repository, granting access to many repositories containing countless Debian packages. Once installed, they be launched from within Maemo or an LXDE that runs as an application within Maemo, therefore allowing simultaneous phone functionality. So in my opinion wine isn't that important for the n900, unless there is something you absolutely need that won't run on ARM based architecture...
bruce_wayne...someone said ""The grass is green ot the other side".
I have N900 and Samsung Galaxy S.
Android and N900-Maemo5 have advantages and disatvantages. The right choise depend ot what you need from device.
I am user that don't have ability to make program, but I like to install and use.
For me phone must be like mini computer but still lightweight.
For me the necessary thing is:
Good phone with video player capable to play Standart Definition video and play internet stream(HTTP).TV-out is welcome
Software that I need is: Skype, ICQ and VNC client.
N900 disatvantages for me and my kind of work.
Weight!!!. Maemo5. Poor battery life-especially in 3G mode.
But.....N900 have nice contacts menager with Skype and ICQ accaunts.
Skype Video conversation. Diferent video player and codec pluging
In Galaxy S. Nimbuzz ( or other program) substitute N900 integrated chat client. Program WYSE is good VNC client.
The only thing that missing is video Player with HTTP capabilities. I really want to watch my VLC stream.
So....everything depend of what do you want from phone.
If you have question about N900. Just Ask..I'm not Maemo5(N900) fanboy neither Android(Galaxy S)

Android or iOS? Which do you prefer?

Im just curious how many of you out there would recommend an iPhone over an Android phone or an Android over an iPhone. After being an iOS user since 09 and recently switching to Android, I would actually say that Android is my favorite. Just because of all the customization options I have and all the things I can do that I could of never done with an iPhone (even when jailbroken). Now I'd like to hear your opinion.

IOS.
Android FTW!
agreed with android ftw..
i do enjoy reponsiveness of ios and polished look. it just looks "nice"
but android ftmfw..
my friend had an iphone 4 and we jailbroke it and he was showing all the cool things you can do with jailbroken phones..
i was like wait.... what? my phone could do this before it was even rooted.
makes me sad that ios has sooo many features just "missing" that phones should have. or be able to do. i guess thats why its not open sources... =\
Actually I like iOS 'cause it's so stable and really really easy , thus leaving it for all ages to use. But it's really limited and therefore you jailbreak.
Android on the other hand is a very good OS too! It's very very versatile and you can custom it like you want. The only thing with Android is that it's kind of messy.
So to conclude iOS is an OS that you'll find attractive in first look and some months to come. Android is an OS that grows on you and you'll love it in the long-run.
Has anyone seen iOS5? Apple obviously stole almost every new feature from the jailbreak community then they stole notifications from Android. They need to come up with their own ideas.

I suspect you're going to get android as the majority answer here.
I'm over the ios>android or android> ios. They're different beasts with great qualities all around. I think ios is a simpler os in that really anyone can use it. At the same time, android's strength comes in its flexibility and customization. This doesn't suite everyone because really the majority of people just want an easy button. They can find that in android, they just don't have the patience to look.

I wouldn't neccesarily say that Apple stole multitasking from another OS/Device because its different. I mean, come on, its fake. I wouldn't say Apple stole the homescreen wallpapers either. Its an image that doesn't move and it isn't live. Basically, it makes it look a little better. No biggy.

If you want to use your phone as a phone with a little web browsing and a little Angry Birds playin', get iOS because its simple. If you want to make your phone the way you want it and you like customization, freedom, and the ability to to almost anything with your phone, get Android. =)
This might ne 101st thread of iphone vs android topic and this thread will just encourage flamers.
And on side note.. U like android over ios... Cool.. There are millions who do for the same reason as you do. Nothing special.

I would really like Ios, it's not a bad OS. Multitask, runs pretty decent, huge app store, but there are a couple reasons why I'm not on ios.
Flash, I use flash on my phone all the time. Keeps me entertained.
Screen size, 3.5" is too small for me.
Carrier, I'm on Sprint dammit.

I use an iPhone for the reliability of it. And because currently it's the only phone I have with FFC. I also use an Android phone because of the enjoyment of it and apps. I feel my Inspire is smoother and nicer than my iPhone, but not as reliable. The screen isn't nearly as good as the iPhone 4's, either.
I also use a WP7 device and feel WP7 will overtake bother other formats eventually. It's that good.
But right now I don't leave the house without my iPhone. I feel secure in the knowledge I can get ahold of someone shuld the need arise. My Inspire almost got my family and I lost once due to a malfunctioning compass and non-functioning nav.

Almost exact sentiment, except in reverse. My trusty Eris does all my heavy lifting for work-related tasks while my iPhone is my gps/playtoy. Haven't gotten my hands on a windows phone yet but they certainly are sounding more and more attractive these days!
iOS is too newbie friendly for me, no offence to the people on here btw, you guys are awesome
I went Android because I don't follow Iphone/Blackberry trends and I love it now

Thats a nice OS but a WP7 phone at work somehow got a virus and it wouldbt let the phone do anything and all it did when you turned it in was show a big smiley face with the bird finger. XD
So yeah unlike allot here i won't go FU on iOS.
Here is my subjective list of pro & contra for both systems.
Mind you i have used both.
iOSPLUS:
Stable
For it's money a well running piece of software built on that specific hardware
Fast
Simple to use
Design = top notch
Good service and reliable
Contra:
Hard to modify the feel of the OS
Forced to stay with all apple software (unless jailbroken) to downlaod upload music,etc..
Easy to jailbrake but still a challenge
AndroidPLUS:
Easy to use
Smooth and stable
Easy to modify and root
Customizable to a great extend
Perfectly combined with all Google products
Good service and help from google with personal calls explaining things
Contra:
Default FM can hang once in a while
Without root no way to do much or change much
Easier battery drain (personal opinion)
No updates for all the phone due to builds and limitations ( this is because there are so many companies producing Androids but all with different specs)
WP7Well really don't have much usage experience i did boot the emulator to check it out. Can't say it's ugly but doesn't look appealing either.
I believe that the OS probably is decent but it doesn't beg me to try it out
I think the WP7 is a good phone matching all other MS products. Like Xbox to phone connections and with Win8 it will be easy to look things up on your PC and share it with your phone if you godda go real quick. Win8 get's the same WP7 overlay.
All in all no real user experience so won't brake it down.
I believe it's a small correct list.
I can't say i hate either one of them but currently running android. Feels a Little slower then iOS but my biggest plus is all my Google Docs,Searches,G+,Mail,Pic are easy to acces with simple clicks from your phone.
Who the best is?
Think both are worth as much but if you like to mess around with your phone i would advise the android OS. Also you are more free to choose a phone to your liking then being forced a same look like the guy next to you in the train has.

Android or wp7 mango?

I am confused on which would be the better os. I can upgrade and don't know which one to go with. I do some texting surf the web and play some games. Just wandering what other people think of the two systems.

They both have pros and cons. Android is the one to choose if you enjoy customizing you phone and messing around with it with some extra functionalities. WP7 is more usable out of the box and is smoother, but it's quite locked down as a platform. Anyway you describe yourself like a pretty average user, so it seems like WP7 could be a better option for you.

I agree. Although, you might find that the openness of Android is a ton of fun. You might find yourself not so average after all. I suggest you play around with the phones at a store and get a feel for them.
Yes; openness begets depth, naturally. Guess it all depends on how you wish to use your device. Apparently, if you're looking for the smoothest homescreen, dialpad and keyboard response then WP7 is for you. If not, and willing to sacrifice microsecond differences, as well as a wealth of opportunity and option, Android might be more your thing.
Kidding aside, just depends on what you're looking for.

Nice one, chicken.
If your really into games, Androids your choice, plus its got some pretty sweet music apps with customisable eqs, crossfade, you name it. Imo mango's more fluid as in smoother than Android
In the end it all depends on you. Why don't you check them both and see for you self
I'm checking Mango, it's quite smooth system, although I miss some features and freedom from Android.
i like android better, because of its many functionalities, plus you get a lot of free apps that makes your android experience better .
What carrier do you have? With sprint there is only one windows phone and i would tell you to choose most android phones over it.
My recommendation is for Android, open source and highly customizable.
For your needs, I'd go WP7. Android is better for those who want to tweak and hack their phones but if you want an overall better experience for the things you listed in your initial post, then I'd go WP7.
I actually bought and iPhone 4s, thinking UI fluidity was the most important thing, and while everything ran great I couldnt do everything I wanted I couldn't save links as, or download mp3s from websites basic things an Android can do. I ended up selling and getting gs 2 for sprint, it isn't as smooth but honestly I know now that it doesn't really matter because I can do anything freely. Most apps are free, great community support, free tethering removal of carrier iq etc etc I'm really happy with it. Windows is smooth as well but that just isn't enough these days

I would (and have) gone with android with a HTC Sensation XE and i think personally android is way better than WP7
Sold my HTC HD7 last week cause the content is still far behind Android, there's not even a dropbox app on it
Maybe 1 year from now, i might consider again buying a windows phone but now it is still Android hands down. And Ice cream sandwich is coming. gpu accelerated UI and apps. Better animations so wp7's smoothness won't be so much of an advantage anymore. That's why i came back to android.
And the games for windows phone almost all are craps.
More device options with Android, Windows has better cloud capabilities.

why dropbox when the cloud is integrated immensely well. Also, I've had much more fun on wp7 games than android plus I dig gamer points.
I was at at&t today and the looked at android and wp7 although wp7 looked smoother u really can't do much with it to customize. Now im getting android so does anybody know anything about lg thrill. Thanks for all the input.
I prefer Android by a large margin because it's open system, easy to customize, just works better for me. My present phone is an HTC Sensation but I also have an old HTC HD2 that is dual boot with both WP7 and Android and while I enjoy puttering around with Windows there is no way I could do without Android as my main phone OS.

[Q] The typical question: Android or iOS.

Hey everyone!
First of all, I am new here. I joined with the vision of getting my question answered, but then i fell over some other threads, and found this forum exciting. So i might stick around for awhile.
*Excuse me if i posted this the wrong place*
Brief:
I currently am in the situation where.. Yes, I am sick of my iPhone.
It's a GREAT phone! It's fast, stylish, and durable (atleast so far!).
But i miss the lack of customization.
Untill last december, i've had android phones. However, back then they were slow. The fastest one I've had, was a Galaxy S II. It was fast back then, but when i use my friend's now, it's so laggy and edgy.
I am really considering getting an Android. But there's a few things holding me back..
iPhone
+ I have an iPhone 5. It's fast.
+ My iPhone 5 is stylish.
+ I have 2 MacBook Pro's, an iMac, Apple TV, iPod and an iPad. So i fear the communication between Android and them.
+ The applications. I personally find Appstore filled with higher-of-quality applications.
+ iCloud. It stores my contacts and stuff. But Android's got an alternative for that tho.
+ iMessage. I love being able to chat from my macbook to iPhones, without confuse. And fast iPhone-to-iPhone chat without the recievant have to download specific software.
+ Reputation. Call me childish, but i just find it "cooler" to have an iPhone..
- Screensize. God it's starting to annoy me. I like having a big badass phone.
- Features. I personally think that the iPhone 5 lacks features.
+/- Jailbreak. Jailbreaking the iPhone gives it alot of awesome features! But having the need to jailbreak it, sucks. Also it makes it impossible to update to the newest immediately. Also yet jailbroken, the system is still very limited. Also it takes a lot of time for it to come out. I haven't had my phone jailbroken for 8 months.
Android
++ CUSTOMIZATION!
++ The freedom to do basically what you want with the phone.
+ Screensize; I find the iPhone 5 screen a tat too small. I miss a bigger size phone, eg the Galaxy S II.
- I fear the speed? Will they be as snappy as i am used to on my iPhone?
- Durability. I remember the old Android phones went slow in just a few weeks due to cache's and stuff. How does that seem now?
+ Features. I think that most Android phones have got some very interesting features. Eg: One Blink Feed, Note 3 S-Pen, S3/4 eye-motion detector.
+ No-jailbreak. Altho Android have the ability to get rooted, it's not necessary (unless you want flashed ROM's). I find that great for my needs, since i love customizing and changing my homescreen-layout / phone functionality on a day-to-day basis. Also iPhone jailbreaks takes a lot of time to come out.
I am very unsure of what to do. It's very hard!
I really like my iPhone, but i miss the lack of customization.
My heart tells me to keep my iPhone, but my brain and inner-geek tells me to go fetch an android.
If it was up to me, i'd have both. But i don't have the money to get a new Android and keep my iPhone. Then i will have to sell my iPhone first.
Could you guys possible give me some aspects and viewpoints on this? I am open for critiques, since i am not coloured of "what's better or worse". I just want personal views.
Also, have anyone gone from iPhone 5 to Android? And did you regret it? (Which i am afraid that i MAYBE will).
And if you advice me to get an Android: Which one?
Thanks in advance!
Welcome at the XDA forums my friend!
From what I think, iOS is child's play in comparison to Android.
Howell iPhones are indeed fast, stylish, etc, the OS won't ever give you control of things.
Apple has it's stuff working together well and so, but the price ofcourse, is to it.
Going through your points, you can make yourself a conclusion, this is just my view on things:
Speed
Android can be as fast as you want it to be, only if you are willing to spend the money on it which you would've spend on an iPhone. Also, making tweaks or changes to your system (You're on XDA anyway) helps greatly in this process.
Keep in mind that Apple has only few devices to optimize their system for, while Android is changed to work on a specific device.
Sync
I have to agree here that Apple has the syncs sorted out better. On Android this is a bit messier, but still working very well when you've got everything up and running. The main reason for this, is that Android is existing more and more out of fragments rather than a fullyfixed system.
Apps
Ofcourse the Appstore is filled with way more quality apps; Apple doesn't allow all Apps to there store. It's part of their policy. Where Google only removes apps from their Store, Apple only allows apps to their store.
Also I kinda like that Google makes their apps available to iOS, which I've barely seen the other way.
Messaging
iMessage is great, but since a few months, Hangouts has the same features plus more! And best of it, it's nearly standard packed (older devices will have to update Talk) with the system.
Durability
Android phones are in my opinion better in getting a new life than iOS phones. Ensurely when you're rooted/unlocked. Phones that have been all forgotten about by their manufacturers (also Apple does this) can still be up to date and smooth thanks to the great devs around. It may take some bravery, but that's completely on to yourself.
The other points not covered by these are more subjective I think.
Like I said, take your own conclusions from this and let me hear what it'll be!
Makes sense
Thanks for your reply!
Your aspects makes sense. Especially with the price thing.
Apple's expensive, and one option-only. (okay, 5c too)
Where Android phones in the same price scale, will top at quad core with double the speeds. RAM too.
What phone would you suggest i get then? In Denmark the variety of sold phones is limited.
You can see them here www . telenor . dk / privat / mobil /
(i cannot post URL's yet)
Android all the way. With the customizations and the community you can't go wrong.
iPhone: good camera, fast, decent battery life
Android: everything else

Apple vs Android - Why Did You Pick Who Your Pick?

So, with all the new tech announced and released the last couple of weeks, it gave me an idea to do something a bit different and rather than just covering the devices, actually getting YOUR input on why you guys like Android over iPhone and vice-versa after actually be asked and not random arguments in YouTube comments. Be sure to leave a comment with your reasoning behind what you pick whilst keeping yourself from being completely biased if you can.
I had an iPhone and switched over to Android and probably won't ever go back. The amount of customisation and mods you can make on Android is incredible, plus if you're not incredibly tech savvy even a custom ROM can give someone everything they'd want in a phone in a way that a jailbroken iPhone just never could for me,
Just wish there was a public release of something I came across a few months ago called "Cider for Android" which let iOS apps run natively on Android. Would be cool to have the option to have both kinds of apps on a single device.
Android ...
I would try apple only when it leaves the motor cycle segment and comes back to mobile segment..
I love everything you can do on an Android that you can't on an iPhone. Customizations, rooting, custom ROMS, being free from iTunes, etc.

Well I came back to Apple
Well my first smartphone was 3 GS jailbroken. Ran good, but customization sucked, even with cydia. So got a Desire HD, and Played around with different ROMS. It was cool for a while, then got Samsung Note, and Note 2. they were both ok, but not that many ROMs for them. So when I got sick of that, went back to an iPhone 5. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. Functionality is the main reason I went back I guess, asa with Android, if you customized it you had to almost always give something up.

U didnt tried a nexus ?
Root + xposed is only thing needed to achieve extreme customization without giving up anything...
I would try a iphone 5s if my dad allows me to exchange my nexus 5 wid it....lol
Chose android because there's so much more you can do with it it seems. Like when it comes to customization. You can choose different ROMs, kernals, etc. Just seem to have more freedom on android.
Originally I went with Android simply because I didn't like Apple/iTunes. I've always preferred PCs, and iTunes is one of the worst programs created (along with Real Player and Windows Vista). It wasn't until later on I learned the limitations of iOS outside of jailbreaking, short battery life, lack of 3rd party keyboards, and other such things. As time went on, I was increasingly happy I went with Android. I had LTE while everybody's iPhones topped out at 14.4Mb/s 3G. Expanding storage cost way less (and still does). Apple kickstarted the smartphone market; they weren't the first, but they were the ones that spurred on the revolution. But refusing to evolve outside their own little box that they prided themselves on thinking outside of made them fall way behind.
Obviously, many people will still and always love iPhones. The larger screens of the 6 and 6 Plus are obvious confessions by Apple that they've had their head up their collective ass for years. 4 years ago Steve Jobs said nobody will buy a phone that big (referring to the "huge" 4.3" screen of the Motorola Droid X). Samsung proved him wrong 3 years ago with the Galaxy S2, then the Note series, and have been proving him wrong ever since.
Frankly, I think iOS is just fine as an operating system. Is it the OS for me? Hell no. But I can't deny that it's well designed, well rounded, and nobody can deny the apps and games available for it. And if I had to, I could "get by" with an iPhone, since it will do pretty much anything I would want a smartphone to do throughout my day. But I also know I'd grow bored with it, and frustrated that I can't modify/customize/optimize it like I can an Android phone. And I'd never actually pay for an iPhone, unless it was an absurdly good deal (and I'd probably resell it anyway).
android
I went with Android over apple because my friend had just got the new Galaxy Nexus back in 2011 and he was talking about how badass it was and how you could root it and unlock it so after I saw his I had to get my own and I also was told that you cant install roms on Apple phones.

iPhone 3GS I imagine, one of these things: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_3GS
Android... Widgets, customizations, opened system... And definitely hardware. I had iPhone and this is not bad device but not for me.
Pretty Interesting Question Though
nexus
I think up till now iPhone was the way to go. As much as android might have customisability and whatnot Apple was always superior in the UI and experience department in my opinion. However L is going a long way and will change things I think
Android first place.
Im waiting to firefox os,can be installed easy in android phones.
Can be interesting test it.
I think both OS have their benefits, which I won't go into because it's a long-winded talk we've all heard before. I used to use Apple and liked it fine. Eventually it slowed down after an iOS update and it became out-of-date and I got frustrated with it. Moved over to Android and I like it, though it's not without faults. The main thing I like about Android is the ability to get another battery instead of relying on Apple's in-house repairs and service.
android forever...hahaha:laugh:
The operating system no longer reaches Appel Android, but it has going for it ... a very important therefore it is designed only for your own devices, while Galaxy is an android devices, all with different specifications, measurements, etc ...
Apple is too overpriced, i would pick an iPhone for €400 and a good Android phone for €400 also.
Tablets will be forever Android.
