There seems to be a lot of contradictory information out there as to whether the Omnia 7 can use SD cards or not - can anyone confirm whether you can or can't use SD cards in this phone? It's one of the deciding factors for me as to whether I get one of these phones...
Thanks in advance.
No go http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/20/samsung-omnia-7-review/ "also, the latter lacks microSD expansion, thus stuck at 8GB of storage capacity for life."
Yes, I saw that, but there are plenty of leaks around suggesting there is a capability for it on this phone, on reghardware for instance.
Just looking for confirmation beyond that article (I don't see a photo or the phone with the battery out showing no SD slot on it, after all).
Take a look at the similar topic here. In short, Omnia 7 does NOT support expandable storage.
Ok, thanks. I might end up going for an Android phone if there are no other options in the UK for expandable storage on WP7 phones, then.
Here's another question: Is anyone offering the 16GB Omnia 7 in the UK?
Yeah, I'm still considering my options.

THAT is exactly what I've been trying to find out myself. If you hear anything please post back here and I'll do the same.
I've heard the 16Gb is Asia-only which saddens me. If Omnia 7 16Gb was available in the UK I'd have one on me already, instead now I wait for a SAMOLED with 16Gb+ before I jump onboard :/

That sounds like a good idea.
I personally have never used up a 2GB SD card and so 8GB is more than enough for some users.
If you however require more space then they will probably bring out better devices next year.
Well, I am afraid only 8GB devices are heading to Europe. Except from the exclusive HD7 16GB on O2.
The funny thing is that HD7 16GB seems to be the cheapest WP7 device in UK without contract (£380 on PAYG). Orange lists Mozart 8GB for £450 (PAYG) and Omnia 7 8GB remains about £480-500 on pre-orders.
the differance is screen quality is so marginal its almost none the hd7 is a far better phone. I was hooked on the omnia for ages but when it came to buying a phone it was hd7 all the way. Though i will say it is the cheapest paygo but its not the cheapest contract due to being extortion r us O2 but I had to have this phone in my life and i was just short of the cash needed to go without contract.
I wouldn't say HD7 is better than Omnia 7. At least Samsung has better camera, larger battery, far better display. Don't forget WP7 has been designed with AMOLED tech in mind so Omnia will have much better battery life, especially with the dark theme.

I have to say that the difference in display quality is HUGE. The Samsung wins hands down, no matter if you're inside or outside. The drawback is that it's smaller though.
My choice was between the two and up until I could confirm 100% that the Omnia 7 did not have a SD slot (as Three UK initially reported it did) it was the device I was choosing. When I found out there was no expandable memory on the Samsung I was really torn on what to do, on the one hand the Omnia has a much better display and what I'm guessing is a far superiour camera to the HD7 (based on previous HTC products I've owned).
The downside was that it only had 8GB storage, which is way too little for my needs. So in the end I went with the HD7, but I'm really not happy about it and if I had a choice of not getting a WP7 device at all I would have done (unfortunately I need one for development purposes).
I don't know what HTCs game is recently, but they're releasing a whole bunch of crap. I mean, you can get a 5MP camera with a 3.8" screen or a 8MP camera with a 3.7" screen... why f'ing bother? They even look similar. Give us a device with 3.8" screen and 8MP camera (provided said camera is even any good) device instead.
Lg has 16 Gb and is released in Europe
Kind regards.
And Lg's screen is really good
It has a Snapdragon 2650, 1 GHz, new generation
Cheers.

No! It has the QSD8650 wich is first generation.
Somewhat OffT, but is there any reliable source which tells wherter the Samsung have 256 or 512MB RAM?
I don't want to get owned later if I get a 256MB RAM device and it turns out that 512MB will be useful later on (for e.g. multitasking)
I'm currently deciding between the Omnia or LG Optimus

Been trying to confirm this today after receiving a Omnia7 from ThreeUK, but the specs show nothing about actual RAM size, neither does the Settings/About screen.
I'm guessing one way to find out for sure is to side-load the Task Manager from one of the pre-release ROMs, but I'm not keeping this device so won't register it to my marketplace accnt.
Either way you should be fine with the Omnia7 for a long time to come as any single app is only allowed to consume 90MB RAM (at least at the moment).
Dude - if you received a handset today, can you verify/reject if Omnia 7 indeed has an empty slot for SD-cards???
Please, upload a picture with the backcover off and battery out!

Hello,
Currently I'm Android user. I had Desire and now I have Desire Z. I'm looking for Win device, because the UI is much better in my opinion and the OS is really good.
I hate Android market, because there are so many **** apps, you have to download other programs to filter the **** and etc. I hate it.
Second I hate are those widgets, tiles are much better for me.
So my questions:
Will MS update all their phones at the same time? Or will it be like Android, some of the devices will be updated, some will be left without update. I hate this on Android, because you have to buy many devices if you want to have the latest OS. I think this thing adds very much to the sales...
Other question: As I live in Lithuania (europe) will the market and other features work? Operators are selling some devices with WP7, but I want Samsung Omnia 7, because I think it's the best in battery/looks. Maybe you would recommend other phone?
Thanks for the answers very much ))
Well apparently MS will update all devices at once or at least this is what I know.
As for the Market, unfortunately it is not supported fully in many countries.
So for now you can download any freeapp, to buy you have to wait OR register credit card with US or UK address.
Oh, if they will be updated all together, that's wonderful! That is the most annoying thing in Android- fragmentation and a lot of **** devices. It can't be a good platform with many, many phones. Many apps don't work on many devices and phones are not updated and etc. :]
Well, as I wan't to buy new WP7 phone, which one would everyone suggest me? In our shops we have HD7 and Trophy, but I wanted to get Omnia 7. So what's the best? I need a good battery life, minimum 3,7 screen, good looking device ))

It sounds to me that the only requirements you have is a minimum screen size. Then you should go with the HD7 because it has 4,3 over the 3,8 on the Trophy. I also heard that there is a lot of problems with the Trophy. I ended up buying the Omnia 7, becasue of the AMOLED and the nice design(and because it what on sale) But then again HTC do have MicroSD slot inside which means that you can upgrade the space, where Omnia 7 only comes with 8gb NAND. That does makes the Omnia significant faster when loading applications but also mean you are suck with limited storage.

Well,
I had HD7 in hand and it wasn't so comfortable... The lock key is hard to reach and it's kinda big for me. Well, if it had a good battery life, I would consider it... But I heard that it has horrible battery... My main factors for phone is: Battery Life and Screen, well memory is important too... Omnia 7 would be perfect if it had 16Gb. I wrote to some sellers, because in Germany they have 16Gb versions, maybe in Lithuania they will have some too ))

Maybe, i don't think that 8gb is to little, special if you get ZunePass so you only stream your music instead of have them on your device. Special if you like me have a flat rate data plan. Well you could go for the German version (thought of that to, but could't find it anywhere) I'm getting my Omnia 7 tomorrow(i hope) and i'm pretty sure i wont regret
Oh P.S. In the future everything will be stored in the cloud, so why would you need physical memory (lol)

I have LG Optimus 7. Good device, good looking. Well built.
I would not get HTCHD7 because HTC used ****ty screen for this one.
And also HTC has usually bad cameras.
I wanted to buy SonyEricsson but they didn't make it.
I would take DellVenuePro or Samsung with the best camera.

Heh it's my first LG phone and I never thought I would buy it!
But it's well built and actually looks great in life.
Something I can't say about Samsung.
It also has 16GB and good batteery life.
i have a HTC 7 Trophy. It's what i would call the minimum spec'ed windows phone. and to be honest, it's fine. i'm not crazy about space, screensize, camera. battery life is just as good as any of the other phones. the issues reported seem to have died a bit. i think my screen still gets a bit dirty a bit too quickly, but i bought a screen protector to stop that issue. i was and am still interested in omnia 7 but now that i have the trophy, i can settle knowing that i pretty much have similar capabilities. my girlfriend will probably end up getting the omnia within a few months so i will be able to fiddle with both devices anyways.
The HD2 has AB 1150 mAh battery so yes its bad. It also has one of the worst possible display panels Htc. Could have chosen.
Get a venure pro instead of an Hd7. Much better phone in almost every way possible.

actually, the hd7 has a 1230 mah battery, still not great, but oh well.
What is your obsession with the dvp??? It doesn't have better specs, has the lowest memory of all the wp7 launch devices (can we even call it a launch device when no one could get it at launch), and it's only upside is the slide out portrait keyboard.
You know, I was very interested in the dvp, until it started having all these problems. Then to put half the ram that all the other phones are coming with...
I just don't trust dell enough to spend the money.
Get an Omnia 7. I had an HD2 and was looking at the HD7 but HTC really messed up with just copying old parts.
Omnia 7 is light, feels nice in hand, screen looks great and good battery.

If you want a genuine WP7 experience, the LG is the way to go. The HD2 is the world's best phone for a lot of things, but it can't give you a permanent WP7 solution. Without a key, you can't use the Live features and they are foundation of the OS...Market, Zune, Live hub and so forth.
I admire HD2 as a real king of phones.
But for a real, supported WP7 experience get LG.
And this phone rocks too. Absolutely.
Almost no flaws. Pictures in low light could be sharper.

If it is the 1024 Leo, no! If it is the 512 Leo, yeah.
Do not get LG optimus 7. It's looks solid but has crappy hardware. I've sent mine back twice and it's still buggy as hell. I switched to a different carrier and got the samsung focus and desperately trying to get rid of the LG.
i have the lg optimus 7 and the camera sucks bad on lg, especially with the flash. other than that its a very solid phone
which is the bug of lg?
Well its still hard to say but the touchscreen can be ridiculously unresponsive at times. Now this seems to happen in certain situations like when changing the volume to ringer or attempting anything in ie. You should know that the only way to wake the device is rto use the small button at the top. I am going back today to check about the screen but other wise I am very happy with it.
HD2, No question... It's not every phone where you can run WM 6.5 AND WP7 on....the best of both worlds...
If they made it on a CDMA network (CDMA coverage is better than GSM in my area), It would be the only phone I would buy.
if you want a WP7 device, trade. Unless you're a developer the HD2 id factorably worse than devices designed for the OS they run.
Also extra batteries are useless when you have a hard case on the phone. Most people could care less if you have them because it's a pain in the rear to remove an otterbox or body glove case all the time to swap batteries.
Hell, swapping batteries period is a pain, imo. Lol.

I gotta disagree there. That isn't the experience I have. In fact I say it's "factorably" better than devices running OEM OSes. I've used a number of genuine Android phones such as the Nexus S, Evo and DesireHDs and the HD2 running their ROMs is generally smoother and just as fast. The Nexus S ROM especially is better running on the HD2...at least it feels better.
Worse quality screen than even the HD7 and Evo 4G. Small battery (same size as HD7). Has issues failing due to MoBo issues after some time (overheating, freezing, and random chain-resets, etc.) <- this is the main reason most T-Mobile reps try to steer people away FROM the HD2, and why they do the same for the HD7 (the devices are too similar with similar naming, so they assume the HD7 will have the same issues). Camera is not competitive. Hardware buttons on the front get sort of loose on some phones after heavy use.
The build materials are quite good. The specs are rather coincidental IRT WP7
But there are better phones.
The HD7 is good as a developer device because it can be hacked to run 3-4 smartphone OSes, meaning as a developer you do not have to buy a new phone to develop for WP7 or Android if you're moving off of Windows Mobile.
But the newer devices designed for their respective OSes are better devices.
Yes, Carrier Branded devices offer suffer from performance issues due to bloatware and carrier modifications, but I don't agree that an HD2 outperforms a Nexus S, or even a Nexus One. Sorry.
I do have 3 different phones (HD2, HD7, Vibrant), so I've done this comparison - side by side, already.
In the case of Android devices, they tend to come with large internal storage in addition to an SD Card Slot (not the Nexus S, though), which give them yet another advantage over the HD2. It has basically just a 1GB ROM and an SD slot. Sorry, but I'll take a 16GB NAND (12.6GB free) with an 8GB cheap Class 4/6 SD Card over going out and spending $150for a good quality name brand 32GB SD Card (not the cheap knockoffs everyone is getting from eBay, etc. having an SD fail on you sucks esp when you have tons of data on it).
But whatever floats your boat.
The HD2 is only like $49.99 on contract these days so if you want one that badly, then just buy a new one and ETF the line later. If you sell your old phone, you may even come out a bit ahead...
ok thanks for the answare ... but i read in a lot of forum that lg optimus 7 is a bad phone because it freez and restart randomly it have a bad quality cameraand the screen a lot of time not responding .... all this bad thing is absent on my hd2 only the camera is bad when i use the flash ...

I don't see that as a big problem unless you're printing pictures... in which case Photoshop easily fixes the hues.
I'll always suggest a pure WP7 experience over a tainted one. The HD2 is similar to the HD7 only less responsive and HTC's WP7 devices have been less than impressive as is. So yeah, 100 percent go LG.

Complete bull****.
I run LG Optimus 7 all the time and it's almost bug free.
Never had any problem with unresponsive touch screen. Restarted ONCE through the whole usage cycle.

Hello all,
Been looking at this phone for a while, want an upgrade my desire as
it just lags bit much more then i like and battery not as good.
My question is:
What is the vodafone stock levels like? Where is the best place to buy i.e. shop , online , phones 4 u.
Ive been looking forums and seen people saying online have been having stock issues , so was just curious?
On a side note , has anyone upgrade from desire/similar and can
say its worth the upgrade? I worked out it only going to cost me around £100 to
upgrade which I'm happy to pay - but is it worth it? (After i sell the phone and cancel my current contract etc..)
Also , how much internal memory has the desire got left to use on first boot?
Not seen a deffinate answer yet? I've heard around 1gb?
Any plus/minus is worth knowing to help my decide?
Thanks
I've heard it's a great phone, with few issues.
But I've heard from some Desire users and DHD users that it's not much of an upgrade, in that you could pass it off as a "Desire-PRO." The feel will be pretty much the same, just with a better camera and touch screen buttons at the bottom. I've also heard that Sense 3 is not that much of a big step up. (the homescreen has a different animation, though)
In my opinion, from a Desire, the only thing your really upgrading to is the new lock screen, speed improvements and more storage.
(There's more RAM, but you get left with 197MB actually available for apps to actually use. On my Desire, I get 155MB left available for apps)
Of course if you a HTC fan, and that's what your looking for, then by all means it's a great phone, after all the Desire was pretty amazing.
If you fancy a change, you could look at the Atrix or GSII (or one of the optimus phones)
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I don't actually have a Sensation, but have been intensively reading the forums for the last month or so. (I'm in the process of deciding what to upgrade as well)
If the QHD screen is not the killer feature for you, you can quite easily run Sense 3.0 on the DHD, as many people are doing already.

I agree. qHD is a "failed" technology. It's pretty damn good, but it's an "inbetween technology." It'll be around for 4-6 months and then we're going to have ultra-high-resolutions in the market, which will simply triumph all other displays.

im seriously thinking now. I think i would love the bigger screen size and quality ,
im agains the samsung simple for the feel of it, i hate the galaxy s , as i class the feel of the phone as one of the most important (as doesnt matter how good a phone is, if you hate the feel in your hand then not very good)
Im confused about the quote, you mention ram at the start then say only
197mb free for apps,
do you mean there only 197mb internal memory spare for apps?
If thats true that is a big minus!

No, by 197mb RAM i mean that, that's all you have for apps to use - RAM is not storage. RAM is Random Access Memory. Basically the more RAM available, the more things the phone will be able to do WITHOUT lagging up and getting slow.
In the beginning i was referring to 1GB of space of internal storage to store all of your apps.
Cheers for that -

Hi Phil,
I got mine yesterday from Phones4U, they had no stock problems as far as I know.
It has around 600Mb+ free for app installations (plus the 8Gb SD card of course). As previously mentioned, there is about 200Mb RAM free on boot too.
Only lag I've had today has been when updating the Vodafone settings (data plan stuff) which needed a reboot, but I'm guessing it was just a glitch with one of the apps using the connection at the time, as otherwise, its been as fluid as a, erm, fluid thing.
Battery: pretty much constant web, market and facebook chat usage on 3G, plus a few 3 or so minute calls = down to 12% battery by about 2pm (unplugged 7am)
rp-x1 - Does your Phones4U Sensation have Vodafone branding or is it running Generic Europe firmware?

In my opinion, from a Desire, the only thing your really upgrading to is the new lock screen, speed improvements and more storage.

Thanks useful stuff coming from someone who brought it !
And yer the screen and speed are my biggest wants . 600 mb is plenty so that sorted that problem!
Im edging towards it closer and closer! Specially as my desire battery seems to be dieing , i was one first to get one before the release date so had it 15 odd months and battery life getting worse and worse.
Also thinking of upgrade from Desire to Sensation but worried about losing the optical joystick (or whatever it is called). I seem to use it a lot for close up fiddly movements of the cursor. Does new software cope without it? Do any new phones still have the hardware?

I was worried the same untill i played with my boss's desire s (without the trackpad)
HTC/android has some new little arrow buttons you can use to be more accurate which is why the trackpad has been removed on all new phones.
Takes a while to get used to it but it made me happy not getting a trackpad

Hi, it has Vodafone branding, but can only see the Vodafone logo on boot and a 360 app in the list. Otherwise it 'looks' largely untouched

Hi People!
I'm currently looking for my first smartphone to replace my 6 year old Nokia 5810 (it's done well bless it).
I've narrowed my choice down to either the HTC One V for £190 (new) or an HTC Sensation XE (new - without Beats Headphones) for £250
I'm sold on Sense and would like to purchase either one soon.
Is the older dual core XE worth £70 more?
Am I right in believing i'll get better battery life and a smoother Sense 4.0 experience with the One V?
I'd appreciate any info or opinions between the two
I think you've just about convinced yourself to get the One V. It is a very good phone although I took the One S. The One V is better on battery life over the XE .
By the way are those prices incl. VAT?

Thanks for the reply.
Yes VAT included - I was also strongly considering the One S but I'm buying sim-free and can't quite part with £360 for it.
Do you think the single core of the One V will cope with most things? I'm not much of a gamer and from what i've seen the One V is a high quality phone for the price range
Decisions, decisions
Now to throw a new spanner in the works - i've just seen an HTC One S for £295 (mint condition and it includes a 12 month warranty)
Bit of a price difference between One V (no warranty unless I opt for an ebay promoted one) and One S but effectively rules out the Sensation XE at £250
All I want is a sim-free phone that will last for 2-3 years or possibly more - so I kind of hoping the hardware will cope with app development over this time
Would the lack of SD card and non-removable battery limit the One S' lifespan?
Would I be paying over-the-odds for the One S if I'm new to smartphones let alone Android?
I'd appreciate any feedback or advice on these devices
Well I'm new to Android too. I'm liking my One V (cant compare to anything else). Seeing as I have already rooted it for the extra functionality & control, it means I've voided my warranty anyway.
It also has a non-removable battery the same as the One S.
But to me the lack of memory card on the 'better' phones is a no-brainer.
In 4 years of using my old C902 I still have 2GB (out of 8GB) left on the memory card, the phone wasnt up to much, with no wifi, & imo a rubbish camera. I didnt do much with it.
Yet in just 6 weeks of owning the One V, I've only got 2GB left on my 16GB card. Basically with the phone being all-singing & all-dancing, & a much better camera (despite both cameras being 5 megapixels) I have found I'm doing far more with it. As a result I'm rapidly filling up the memory card. So I have since put in a 64GB card. Had I bought the One S instead, I would have already filled the storage by now.
lack of SD - a minor problem? or major one?

Hi Ssscrudddy,
You've made an interesting point there, as I've tried justifying the lack of SD as I wouldn't be loading music onto the One S at all just apps.
Out of interest, what is taking up so much of your memory? Have you used dropbox yet?
Mainly 8GB of music, & a whole bunch of motorbike videos. Also I like to video stuff, like with photography, it can often take a lot of videoing to get enough decent footage to be worthwhile using. Seeing as I'm without a decent camera at the moment (the last 1 fell off a motorbike & I'm skint atm) the best camera I have right now is my phone (One V).
I've used dropbox & I thinks it's really good. It actually saved me from getting prosecuted. Long story short, a company I have to deal with the security guards decided they didnt like me filming (I was filming as proof of what I was doing). They restrained me, took my phone, deleted the video, called the police & told a pack of lies. Thanks to dropbox though the video was still on the net (even though they deleted the vid from my phone, it must have uploaded it from a temporary file) & I was able to prove I had done nothing wrong.
My problem is that my usual haunts always seem to have really bad network coverage & there never seems to be any wifi about. As a result I like to have my stuff stored locally.
Now on the bigger card I've got 16GB of music, no change in anything else though.

best practices for flashing this rom: give thanks to: @cragains (post #666)
please do a back up in twrp no matter what. Since there isn't a 100% stock rom that has wifi calling working. If you don't do a back up and want to have a 100% stock rom again you'll have to to flash the firmware to do so.
1.Factory reset (you dont have to but I always do)
2.Put in Download Mode
3.Flash ANK3 firmware via Odin
4.DL Mode again
5.Flash Root via Odin
6.DL Mode once more
7.Flash TWRP via Odin
8.Boot into TWRP factory reset (no need to wipe internal storage)
12/13/2014 UPDATE: We have a TWRP recovery!! follow this link: http://androidforums.com/threads/twrp-2-8-1-0-afyonltetmo.887861/ and please thank shabbypenguin.
10/28 UPDATE: We have Root !!!
Please if you just joined the thread be polite and read through the pages before asking questions that have been asked and answered several times in the thread, this is good forum manners.
Instructions:
1. Go to website: autoroot.chainfire.eu
2. Download package for SM-G386T (donate to be a community member)
3. Unzip it.
4. Open Odin3-v.07 on computer
5. Turn off phone.
6. Hold Down Vol, Home, and Power, simultaneously.
7. Press Up Vol to accept
8. Connect phone to computer via USB
9. Confirm that the message in Odin says "Added"
10. Check box for PDA and click on PDA, to select the file "CF-Auto-Root...." that is in the unzipped folder
11. Click Start
12. It'll restart the phone on its own. Odin should say "Pass!" on the upper left.
13. When phone on, download Root Check and run it to confirm that its been rooted.
Thank you all for keeping the thread going and being perseverant at getting a root solution, a custom recovery and a custom Rom. I will keep an eye on the thread and put updates here on the begining to make it easier for everyone. :good::good:

I got the galaxy Avant two days ago from Tmobile. So far I am very happy and impressed, I compared the screen with the S5 side by side, the Z1s, the HTC one M8, the I phone 5s and the LG G2 and I must say that for not being HD it is impressive. at full brightness both the s5 and the Avant with the exact same web page open both screens displayed the exact same content even though the Avant fonts were a bit smaller, however the background white was whiter on the Avant and a bit more yellowish on the S5, then all other phones I compared had whiter whites in the background but the content was very different some showing more and some showing less content ( I can recall which is which.. sorry).
Please share your reviews on the new phone, I think it has impressive specs for a mid range at such a low price. I got mine from T carrier at only $120 with their summer special. With 1.5 Ram, 1.2 quad-core snapdragon 400, 16 GB internal memory plus external micro Sd for up to 64 additional Gb, kit kat 4.4.2 right off the bat plus an unlock app,and full 4G LTE capability this phone has potential for some major development. the camera even only a 5 megapixel takes very decent photos and has nice features like panoramic, shot and sound, sport mode, and a couple more..
By the way... Does anyone know how to root the new Galaxy Avant?
So.. let's talk about this phone and see how good it is and how much better it can become. Thanks.

It's not user error.. it's not willing to be patient.. or just ****ty programming.. "whathaveyou?"
Anyway since my phone came back from the "no phone calls" dead.. I'll just wait it out... or play with the settings until it's fixed..
i just checked.. I still can't dial out.. so now I'm gonna play with wcdma/gsm.. because it did seem to start working after I did that...

Total user error just call them and tell them you were playing with network setting because you have no clue what you're doing and they will walk you through it to fix it. Easy is that. You're phone isn't bricked because you messed with network settings

I picked one up for my daughter without much thought. I can't imagine buying a phone that doesn't have expandable storage or replacabe battery. She's really happy with it, coming from a hand-me-down iPhone 4and has already had fun laughing at small iPhone screens with me.
It's got a good enough proc and memory to run touchwiz I guess, but I'd LOVE to run some AOSP on the for her so she can see what android is really about.
So far I'm excited and happy I bought her this phone and would love to see it get some attention on xda.
Just ordered a few mins ago, I'm on tmo prepaid so no discount.. How ever ordered it threw best buy for 200 and tax, compared to prepaid site which is 256 not including tax.., I'm coming from a lg optimus l9 (which I'm gonna sell and recoup some of the cost)

I don't have this phone, but I am interested in it. If we can get a small developer community around this, that would be even better... at least get us root (I wonder if it's too new/been patched for TowelRoot to work?)
I posted a request for a forum to be created here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54777893&postcount=15177
I ordered one today and I'm also interested in a developer community around this device.
I'm a Linux user/coder myself, but still a little behind the curve on Android. I'll certainly be trying the known root hacks for similar Samsung devices as soon as I get mine.
So glad this phone is finally getting some attention. I switched from my galaxy s2 skyrocket to this one. Although it runs touchwiz its pretty stable with rare hiccups. Its a speedy slick phone. The only drawbacks so far for me have been the camera, 5mp is too low for a new phone. Skyrocket had 8mp. And the screen. Coming from a super amoled to this one the colors are kinda washed out and the white looks kind of blueish. Aside from that root on this phone will get rid of all the bloat and samsung crap and speed it up nicely. So far so good. Must note that this phone is lacking some pretty basic stuff like auto brightness, a dedicated button to turn off data on notification bar, multi window support, the volume is low. On the other hand the minimized call screen widget that appears when pressing home button during a call is a jice addition, along with the ability to quick reply messages similar to how AOSP does it. Hope we get root soon!

I did the same. I bought it for my son he loves it i had bought the Galaxy Light for him unfortunately 4gb of internal storage is not enough. The problem he had was even with an external 32gb not all the apps can be moved but with the Galaxy Avant has enought space and is big enough for him to enjoy so he is happy so am i. btw you can install the Google launcher from the store makes it alittle better with Google now everywhere.

I am also a big fan of the Galaxy S2 from T mobile, awesome custom Roms I have enjoyed that phone until the sim card reader gave up, but I felt it needed a bit more Ram...
About the camera on the Avant, we cannot expect a top end camera in a super budget phone that already has other great specs and quite honestly, after I took a few pics with the camera already and I have nothing to complain; sure not as great as the higher end phones but the pics I took today at a restaurant of my girlfriend with the beauty face mode came out perfect!! I got tons of likes in Facebook.
The screen... it is not as bright and over exposed as the AMOLED ones but... I put it side by side with the galaxy S5 at T-mobile store, opened the exact same web page.. and it blew my mind the fact that the background on this phone's screen had a nicer white/ blue tone rather than the yellowish tone of the S5 and there was a difference in detail but not that huge...
Today I have been all day under the sun in Houston and I was amazed that I had no problem seeing the screen when set at almost full brightness and... the battery... after 22 hours with still 34% left... not bad at all.
So... back to the topic, for me this is like a Galaxy S2 minus camera and screen but with more Ram (1.5 Gb) and more processor Power (quadcore 400 snapdragon 1.2 Ghz), 16 Gb internal memory and up to 64 gb with micro SD, Kit Kat 4.4.2, great size for one hand use, super light; once they get some great roms for this phone optimizing battery, processor and Ram, this phone will be a beast and at the best price in the market!! $216 dollars it is a steal. So this should be candy for the developers to create all kinds of awesome Roms.
I don't think you can expect more for the money... the perfect back up phone if you have a higher end phone as well... Let's hope more people get excited about The Avant...
I just got mine for $120 in the summer special as well. I almost got the LG L90 for $48!!! but its screen has poor viewing angles though it can be rooted now. The Avant is mostly equal to the L90 except a slight smaller screen(4.5 vs 4.7) but the same resolution and the Avant has more memory, internal storage and not only supports LTE but it appears the new 700Mhz LTE spectrum which means even more coverage than most other T-Mobile phones.
I only tested it out in store but plan to open it up tonight and give it a go...
I too want to see this thing at least rooted in the near future.
Anyone unlocked this phone yet without using the unlock app?
I'm looking to buy those phone for my 13 year old brother .. He currently has an iphone 5c but wants an android phone when I switch him to tmobile
anybody try towl root?, what happened if ya did?, I would try but my phone is about to die and im trying to charge it right lol, also anyone know what the software update includes.. Im not gonna apply it till I know
If you are still paying for the phone via extended payments t he only option to unlock is temporary. I believe once you paid off t he phone you may have permanent unlocking.
Towelroot V3: " This device isn't currently supported"
PS. Even then phone is payed off, only temporary unlock is possible (30 days) ?

dang.. go figure, might be able to reconfigure it though... ill have to look into it..
The Avant is the replacement for the Galaxy Light T399. I got the Light shortly after switching to T-Mobile from Verizon and needed something cheap but decent to tide me over until I could get a "real" phone (which, at that time, was going to be a OnePlus One, but not anymore). My feelings on the Light are very mixed. In some ways it performs very well. I get a screaming LTE signal at home (not as good at work, but far better than I did with VZW). I like the small size in the pocket but hate the small screen when using it. It does well on benchmarks, but in real use feels like it's just a bit underpowered, and has some severe lag at times.
The Avant seems to address most ofl the qualms I have with the Light. Bigger screen (but not a huge phone), more internal storage, FM radio. I always felt like the Light could use just a wee bit more RAM to run TouchWiz, and the Avant has that extra RAM. Almost everything about the Avant makes me wish it was available in March when I switched. Then again, I only paid $120 for my Light.
The rear camera on these 2 phones is the same, and I think the 5mp camera takes pretty decent pictures for what it is. Up close it takes great pictures. But farther away, it sufferers simply because of the lack of pixels. Perfectly useable for pics of friends or things to upload to Facebook, but obviously not great for scenic vistas or stuff in the distance. The 2mp front facing camera is obviously an upgrade over the .3mp of the Light, but I never cared about the FF camera.
I do find it curious that it not only supports T-Mobile's band 4 (which AT&T also uses), but also AT&T's bands 1, 2, and 5. Probably the same reason they released that unlocker app, but what that reason actually is, I have no idea.
Although I'm not in the market for this phone (I have a Nexus 4 now), I'm still very interested in it, at the least for recommending to others. On a payment plan, it's the best budget choice phone T-Mobile has. The Galaxy Light and the LG L90 can be had for $100 right now. The Light has LTE, but it's dinky. The L90 is bigger, but limited to HSPA+ 21.1Mb/s speeds. There's the Alcatel Onetouch Fierce, but you don't want that POS. Above that, you're looking at flagships or refurbs for a few hundred bucks more. The only thing in between that's new is the Avant or the Lumia 521 or 635, but who the hell wants a Windows Phone?
Off contract, the obvious alternate choices are the Moto G LTE from wherever or a Nexus 4 off eBay. The Nexus 4 is without a doubt the best spec'd hardware-wise, especially if you're willing to hack it for LTE and play around with custom ROMs and kernels, and can live with 8/16gb storage. Between the Avant and the Moto G LTE, it's a complete toss-up for me. The Moto G has the better screen, but the Avant has a removable battery. I don't consider the extra .5gb RAM an advantage for the Avant since TouchWiz needs it to compete with the minimal needs of the nearly-stock Android on the Moto G. The Avant can support a 64gb microSD card, whereas the Moto G can only take a 32gb (unless you format it to FAT32 and are OK with not having files over 4gb).
BTW, where are people seeing that this phone has a Snapdragon 400? I can't find actual confirmation of the processor anywhere. Both T-Mobile and Samsungs pages on this phone simply list it as a quad-core 1.2GHz. CPU-Z only lists it as quad core ARM Cortex-A7 at 300MHz - 1.19GHz (link).
Hopefully, especially being usable on AT&T's network, this'll become a popular low-mid end phone and will receive more development attention that the Galaxy Light has.

Awesome, thanks. I've been wondering this since it came out. It strikes me as odd that they wouldn't advertize that it sports the SD400/Adreno 305. Bummer about the FM radio though.
How about an Antutu score?
