Rooting and ROM upgrade question - Captivate General

Noob question: If I root my stock AT&T Captivate, will I need to un-root to upgrade to the final Froyo ROM when it is released?
Thanks...

You should be able to update just fine if you are rooted. I was rooted and had no problem updating OTA ATTs last update. That being said, consider the cognition ROM if you want to get the best system with the least amount of work.

Is it possible to disable OTA updates from ATT if you have a custom ROM and don't want to risk getting things screwed up?

The OTA isnt automatic. It will notify you if there is an update, but not automatically install it for you

rooting is simply just adding files to your system. No stock files are deleted. You should be able to OTA just fine while rooted and nothing else.

I did an ota while rooted. Worked no problem. Even kept the root after the install.

I call bs, there were way too many threads about the problems rooted users had updating.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

I had no problems doing the ota while I was rooted, lag fixed and partial bloatware removed. However on my new captivate the ota failed so I updated using kies mini and it was like I did a factory reset and I had to do a factory reset because my ext system was there but one click root didn't recognize its and said I didn't have enough space for fix.after reset I had no problems.

Obviously you didn't read enough. I posted in half of em a well as others like the guy above this post who had no problems. Might wanna lower the bs flag. Lots of people have problems, most don't. Just cause one guy posted his doesn't mean the other 99 have the same issue.
If you mess with the rom, you will have issues with any phone with any ota update.

Hi I am trying to help my friends with a phone that they are going to buy. I only know that it is a Nokia E71. I need to know if they can root it or jailbreak it. I need to know which one. Can they tether with it? Thank you. I had to Google the question and it took me here. Hopefully I can find my way back to this part of the forum!

GSM phones
I don't know if there are any GSM phones listed on this site. I entered in the Nokia E71 info in the "find your device..." box in the top right hand corner on the screen but nothing came up. I was wondering if anyone knows if the phone can be rooted or jailbreaked and if it can be used for tethering. I don't know if GSM phones from Walmart's Straight talk plan are hackable. If you would let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

Does rooting keep from OTA updates?

I'm new to Android - my apologies if this is an ignorant question.
If I root my Captivate will I be removing myself from OTA updates?
From what I understand rooting it does not prevent you from getting the OTA updates but if you put a custom ROM on there you will not be able to get the Samsung ROM when they release it - but then again you won't need it. Everything I've read about Samsung so far pretty much indicates that won't be anytime soon - apparently they are terrible at software updates. I don't know that first hand though, this is the first Samsung Smartphone I've owned.
If you rooted just to remove the AT&T bloat then you should have no worries about when they release Froyo.
If I'm wrong someone please correct me!
No, you'll be fine.
Edit: I agree with what the previous poster said.
Awesome, thanks guys. Looks like I'll move forward with a root this weekend. Time to remove some AT&T crapware
also you can always remove root later if its a problem
since you're new to android and this phone, i highly suggest you read the Pimp my captivate pdf provided for in a sticky on this sub forum.

First thing I did when I got home was jump on xda and read through that PDF. It's well put together; thanks for taking the time. I wanted to wait awhile for some others to take the plunge and report before I dove in myself.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure there was already a leaked copy of the Samsung Froyo so I don't think it will be too far off for the OTA

Quite the opposite. That leaked copy is an early test build which lacks a lot of features and buggy as well.

I am new to the Smartphone and I have an naive question? Is there any possible danger to root the Captivate? Would it be locked by AT&T? Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by "locked by AT&T", but, AT&T will never know its been rooted unless they have it in their hands.
There is always the possibility of something going wrong, but unlikely if you follow the directions as they are written. Research is important too. I've learned TONS here, from others mistakes and experiments.

Rooting the Mesmerize

I finally got sick of the bloat and rooted it. I used The tutorial from here:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/26/universal-android-rooting-procedure-rage-method/
In the tutorial download file I substituted with the new version of the superuser.apk and su from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
All you need to do is substitute the superuser.apk(system/app) and su(system/bin) the rest of the folders/files are not needed. This method worked 1st try, you just have to be very cautious and type everything exact.
Thought I would share for those that like to do things manually Now on to de-bloating, anyone know of a good list of apps that are safe to remove? So far i just got rid of cityid and infoalarm.apk(daily briefing).

You can tether without rooting with the stock wireless modem app unless you just don't want to use that one. Saving apps to the sdcard won't come until Q1 2011 with the 2.2 update.

These phones are hard to brick permanently, i have not used z4root but it seems there has been lots of testing with it and I havnt read of anyone bricking from it.

ota on root

My thunderbolt is rooted. I am not running an special roms. I quess you could said I run a stock root. My thunderbolt just told me there is a update available. If I take it will I loose root access. It is the update for the constant rebooting.
The update for rooted phones is out. I believe it is on XDA.
If you have rooted and titanium backup you can freeze the update 2.300.... progaram and your phone won't check for updates anymore and you can save a bit of memory and maybe even some battery life in the process. If your like me you check the forums for updates on a regular basis, or better yet your rooted with a custom Rom and don't worry about Verizon updates.

[Q] If I root my Nexus S...

Will I still receive the android updates? Ive always been sketchy about rooting my phone because i want to keep the android system as up to date as possible. Will I still receive the android updates if I root my phone or will I have to manually do it somehow?
Much thanks
If you flash a custom rom then you won't recieve the official OTA updates from Google.
If you root the stock rom you will still receive ota updates. You can also manually flash updates(best method). Please do alot of reading about rooting before attempting anything. Had you done this you would have known the answer to your question. Learn how to use adobe and fastboot. Don't be lazy and use a one click root method as this will not teach you anything about your phone and you will not know how to fix a problem should one arise. Thanks for posting in the correct section!

You'll be just fine
Also, if your rooted and running a, custom ROM, you don't need OTA updates, as the ROM developers incorporate the updates into their ROMs, within a day or two usually. I don't even worry about updates from OEMS or Google anymore.
Pipsqueak approved this message.
One click is certainly looking like a bad idea as the ota does come through and then screws up your superuser. I've been arguing w my phone for a week trying to get past this and put cm7 on it.

Typically any Official update will break #SU access and sometimes cause a serious headache in the process.
If you are rooted, do not apply the update. Just wait for a kitchen baked variant to be released.

maybe fixes visual voicemail bug?
For about 6 weeks I've been having issues with the stock visual voicemail app force-closing every time I tried to use it. I tried going into the app's settings area and clearing its data, then re-enabling it in the caller app, all to no avail.
I just installed this update and it looks like my VVM is working again, so I'm hoping this was indeed a known issue and was fixed.
(FTR, I'm not sure that a factory reset before the update wouldn't have fixed the problem, but I didn't feel like re-installing all my apps so I let it go and just used the old-school voicemail number for a while.)
Is there anyway possible for me to get the update because i had s-off and then i wanted to unroot but i used gfree so i had to use gfree and ran into a crap load of problems leaving me right now with s-off and no root permissions . i need to get a new mytouch because this one randomly restarts and i cant send in one with s-off... can anyone help me out?

I'm s-off via engineering bootloader, NOT gfree. Is it worth the trouble to use gfree so I can ruu and stay s-off, accept the update, then flash clockworkmod recovery via bootloader, then go back to cm7?
