Hi ! I have a Galaxy S, SGH-I897, AT&T, unlocked. I have been trying to use Kies (version 1.5.3.10093_80) to upgrade the firmware, as stated on Kies window.
Everytime I try it, I have "Firmware upgrade cannot proceed. Firmware upgrade will close." Also, Kies crashed after clicking on cancel after it.
Version installed: PDA:JF6 / Phone:JF6 / CSC: JF6
Most recent: PDA:JH7 / Phone:JF7 / CSC:JF6
Current firmware: 2.1-update 1
Baseband version: I897UCJF6
Kernel version: 2.6.29
Builder number: eclair
WIndows 7 - 64 bit
Please, any idea how to fix it?
Tks !
Bump !! Anyone ?

Samsung has Mini Kies (or Kies Mini) which is more stable then Kies. It is on their web site under support software for the captivate.
I have tried it already (Mini Kies) and does not work as well...

Must I repeat what he said?
Kies sucks. Use Odin.
I'll even be nice and give you some links.
If you want Froyo 2.2 go here
If you want 2.1 JH7 go here
And for stock 2.1 JF6 go here
You should ALWAYS keep the one for JF6 on your computer incase you have a catastrophic failure of your phone and need to return to stock for any reason.
Got it ! Thanks !!!!!
I downloaded the 2.2 Odin and it does nothing... Not sure how Odin works...
Thanks in advance for your help... Oh... Miztaken do you work for ATT? If so, I wanted to ask you some quick questions if I could... Thanks!!
No I don't work for AT&T lol. For Odin to work you need to put your phone in download mode. Turn it completely off. Remove the USB cable. Start Odin. Hold both volume keys on the phone and plug in the USB cable. The phone should say download and do not turn off target. At this point Odin should see your phone. Click start on Odin and your phone should be updating. If you have any other questions just ask

Thanks so much for the info! As a newbie... gotta ask how do you put the phone in download mode? As I understand it, download mode is activated by the holding down of the buttons right? Thanks again!!
Does odin work even if your phone is rooted or should you unroot first like kies?

Successfully upgraded using Kies
If you want to be sure you are installing the official version try to upgrade to the latest version of Kies first.
I am running Win7 and had the same problem before upgrading Kies.
You have to do factory reset on phone after upgrade to froyo (could not find icon for market!)
so, finally the official froyo update is here.
but it sure needs a lag fix still... (i actually got slower results in J disk benchmark after upgrading to froyo)
Anyone knows if it is possible to apply lag fix to this version?
I am running:
firmware 2.2
I900XXJPM (PDA=JP6, PHONE=JPM)
Looks like Samsung has fixed the most obvious TouchWiz bugs!
Finally being able to create contacts in phone and make them sync to gmail.
Default option when creating entry in calendar is also to changed to make entry sync correctly.
Hello, i have a Samsung SGH-i987, i want to upgrade version 2.2 to version 4... Can some ine help me please?? Thx.

I was tweeting with a samsung helpdesk person. Here is what she said about kies mini:
"Currently Kies Mini doesn't perform any functions for the Captivate. As for 2.2 I don't have any information but we are working on it. "
If I flash stock JF6 then does it mean that I cannot get the JH7 update through kies mini? Anyone recently (last few days or so) did this kind of update through kies mini? Help is appreciated. Thanks

She's right, as far as compared to regular Kies, which has lots of functions. On the Captivate all it can do is update the ROM. You should still be able to update to JH7 with it.

Do the flash back to JF6, using Odin3 One-Click.
After done phone boots, wait till done, do a Master-Clear with Odin3
Kies-Mini will then work for you
You could use the OTA JH7 also
Using Kies-Mini is the way I would go/went
Good Luck

Did you try kies mini or the full version kies that we can download from the non-US samsung site? My kies mini works just fine to identify my captivate. Have you put the phone on USB debugging and kies(firmware update) modes before connecting the USB? Also, you need to open the kies mini on your comp before you connect the cable to your phone. If you did all these but still facing problem then I am sorry I don't have a clue

If you have flashed a custom rom, modem, or kernal, and are receiving a "Unregistered Device" or "The update could not be installed" errors in Kies, you might need to restore your /efs folder from backup after flashing Odin stock JF6 and rooting. (I used adb to restore my backed up folder.) Then reboot a couple of times. After verifying your restore to be a success, flash with Odin once more and you should be good to update to JH7. This process worked for me just yesterday. I think the error has something to do with product codes inside of an encrypted file called nv_data.bin. There are guides for the backup and restoral process in the dev sections and in the i9000 area. Just run a search for "restore nv_data.bin" and it should turn up in the first few results. Also trying using different usb ports has worked for me in the past.

Did not know that. Will revert to stock TW launcer and see what happens. Use LauncherPro primarily.

Will try this. As far as I know, my product code and imei have not been hosed... thus far. But have my original /efs folder saved on my PC hard drive and a flash drive so will give it a shot. Thanks for the suggestions.
Hey guys,
Carphone Warehouse sent me out a brand new to replace my broken one, i got it today and i tried to update it from 2.1 to 2.2 in KIES but it says it is an Unofficial Firmware, the firmware information is completely different to what it should be.
The phone is a Samsung Galaxy Europa (5) I5500- This is what it says on KIES;
PDA:JED / PHONE:JED / CSC:JF1 (H3G)
As you can see this is not right, any help? I don't really want to mess around flashing roms etc- bad experience in the past.
Help me please- I'm lost without half the features from Froyo
Anybody?
Would my only option be to Root and flash to an official stock and then update?

Go to http://www.samfirmware.com to download (registration required) the official stock ROM and Odin. Read the guide on how to update.
Can I safely flash my phone to stock 2.1 via Odin and update to 2.2 through KIES? I know what I'm doing but obviously it's a risky thing- Basically I download the I5500 UK firmware and the Odin+OPS file- using one package and protect ops?

Of course you'd love it, CM7 is gingerbread already (android 2.3.++).
So I had downloaded Kies and it was ready to upgrade my blaze to ICS, but I read that the phone should be unrooted first. So I did this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591601
Apparently that was a mistake. Now I get the following error in Kies:
"Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies" "Current firmware version: PDA:LB7 / PHONE:LF4 / CSC:LB7 (TMB)"
Should I have just upgraded without unrooting? Why is it telling me this? I thought this was the stock ROM? If I keep flashing me Blaze with different ROMs without completely reformatting, will that slow it down?
You gotta go back to the OG rom before the first update.... If u look there is a thread about it on here somewhere

that's a kies issue. lets face it, it sucks. but that's the only tar I've been able to find that puts it back to Samsung Official and allows you to upgrade via kies. If you dont trust the links I have, you can find the tar at sammobile.com but you'll have to register to download

[FIX] "Your device does not support software upgrading via kies" is fine and 100% working. I can personally confirm this ;]
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T769 using xda premium
I never understood why people choose to use Kies... I personally hate it. It is much faster and easier to do it the XDA way and root/CWM and then flash whatever rom you want. If you want I'll post the quicker way to do this. No one has hard bricked from this method and its quite simple.
Root your device (you already have I see)
Install CWM HERE. (make sure not to check re-partition)
Boot into CWM by holding Volume UP and Volume DOWN and pressing POWER. USB must be unplugged. (could take up to 20 seconds to load CWM)
Flash your new ICS modem HERE in CWM
Now you can install any ROM you wish. You can install the stock ICS rom or a modified ROM. It is best to always have CWM just in case something messes up you have options to fix. If you install through Kies you have to install CWM over again anyways. This is faster. Now to install a ROM, there is a common process that will help out....
To install a ROM:
Boot into CWM
Perform a factory/reset
Wipe cache
Wipe Dalvik cache (under advanced)
Install zip (ROM)
Reboot and let your phone sit for at least 5 minutes, 10 is preferred.
Newbie Guide for Modding
You can read the above link for a small rundown on CWM and its available options. If you are here on XDA you probably should have CWM.
I had unrooted my device before installing CWM and didn't see the part that says to root it before hand. I installed it, seems to work fine. Will I have any problems.
Also, I just learned you're instructions are missing a step, I have flash the actual ICS ROM here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918608
Before the radio mod you listed. Other than that, thanks!
P.S. What do you mean by "modem"?
I have an SGH-T769 with android 2.3.6, Baseband T769UVLF4, KERNEL 2.6.35.11, BUILD NUMBER Ginderbread.UVLB7. I am trying to update via kies to ICS 4.0 and it says my device isnt supported, I have updated my baseband to UVLF4 so I dont know what im doing wrong and I dont know how to update the build number to UVLF4. I just did the suggested fix via Jparnell8839, maybe I did it wrong?
1. Questions, no matter how 'dev-section related' they are... go here.
2. I suggest you Odin to stock ICS by downloading the ICS firmware (Uhl something with a 5) from SamMobile.com (I think its down. I can provide a download link later)
3. How to do it?
4. Get your firmware. Download Odin 1.85. Put phone in download mode. Click on PDA, select stock ICS firmware. Uncheck repartition. Hit start.
5. Wait.
6. You SHOULD be on stock ICS now if you followed correctly.
7. Use this if Kies is not working.. otherwise.. try to use Kies.
8. Hit thanks.?
Fixed, and Sorry!
Thank you, I have fixed it. The baseband was UVLF4 but phone version was UVLB7 so I updated the baseband via clockwork mod with T769UVLF4 Baseband_Update, I then flashed from within clockworkmod recovery this rom: SGH-T769_UVLF4_Rooted_Deodexed_ROM. I then did wipe dalvik, wipe data, etc and rebooted. I started kies and BAM! Kies says firmware version available. I am sorry for posting this in wrong section. Thank you for the help. I now have gone from gingerbread to ICS to gingerbread back to ICS.
Just remember to post in the right section next time.. it ticks off the devs.
