ATT Insurance cover "hacked" phones? - Captivate General

Not sure if this is right forum, so mods please move if necessary. Today I unfortunately drooped my Captivate, which cracked the digitizer, but not the glass. Phone still works, but the screen is all wonky, so I went to the ATT store and found out that luckily my phone was insured. They said I was approved via insurance and they would send me a new phone, but when it arrives i must send the broken one to them. Problem is my old has the unofficial Froyo 2.2 update, although nothing else. My question is: will ATT inspect the phone when I send it back and subsequently dishonor my insurance claim? And should I try to flash it back to 2.1?

Well... if the phone still works, then you should flash it back to JH6 (2.1) before you send it to them just in case.

I would think it wouldn't even matter. That had nothing to do with you dropping the phone. It's still broken. You can do the one click back to JF6 if you can get USB debugging turned on though.

It doesn't matter. You dropping the phone has nothing to do with leaked firmware. This is why you party for insurance and a deductible, so you can make a claim.

its usually only warranty that doesnt cover phones that are hacked but hey you dropped it the digitizer didnt crack because of the leaked firmware right

I used to work for att and it doesn't matter. But keep in mind that if you ever have to do a claim again, turn your phone off and wait for a few hours and say that you lost it. That way you don't have to send it back when you receive the replacement.

Thanks for that little tip.

if you are paranoid just use odin to go back to stock...also do a master clear.

I'd wipe and flash to stick regardless. Just to play it safe.

[Q] Returning a rooted/modified phone?

So tomorrow I'm returning my Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.
I'll be returning it to the official AT&T retailer from where I purchased it.
For the sole reason of getting an HTC Inspire 4G instead.
Now..
I called the rep who sold me the phone.
He said I can return it, he'll waive the restocking fee and when asked if I have to reinstall the stock rom and fully restore it to factory condition he simply said "Bro, you don't have to. I don't give a f*ck what you have on the phone"
But i'm not sure if this guy is legit or simply doesn't know sh*t.
This phone is rooted, updated, and nearly all the AT&T bloatware removed.
Is there anyway I can be charged with some sort of penalty later on even though the rep said it's ok for me to return the phone in this condition?

lol .. prolly the latter ...
if you have the free time on your hands id do it in your place
If I were you I'd flash a stock ROM before returning it to AT&T.
yah i think it 's better if you return it to the same state when you receive it.. flash it with x10's stock rom ... before you return it ... but i dont think they will charge you with the phone being modified
Might as well do it, it's not exactly going to take you that long, then there's virtually no chance of being screwed later.
You should definitely do that. Also, there is a chance that he doesn't care but if the phone gets sent somewhere to be restores and they haave your name on file with he phone and stiff, it might void the return and they could charge you for it and ship the phone back.
I'm thinking of returning the Atrix but I only rooted it so you can't really tell something is done. I'm going back to stock anyway though.

[Q] Does the G2x ship pre-rooted?

I just got a g2x from the t-mobile store tonight, and it's already got root. Does the g2x ship pre-rooted, or did I get someone else's return?

Did they pass it off as new? Brand new in a sealed box? I'd be all over this with TMO management if they tried to slip such an item past me as being new.

ouch, you might want to take that back! tell them you found root software on the phone. that phone cost too much for them to sell someone a used phone. especially when they're buying it new. i can see if it was a warranty exchange but come on! they don't even do those in stores anymore.
wow thats BS I'll take it back and demand a credit r something
Does it show uptime?
T-MO's policy is that even if they return the phone after 5 minutes of use, not even leaving the store, so long as the box is open, its a refurbished device and is sold as such. If a rep tried to pull that I'd go back and ask whats going on. Honestly, it's probably a phone that a rep was messing with.
i actually live in northern va too and rooted a phone then returned it cause something was wrong with the battery, maybe you got my return! lol
A big worry would be if you went in and they tried to give you the run around about honoring your warranty by saying you rooted your phone and now you're on your own. Who knows why it was returned in the first place so there is a chance you would need to get support for it.
I'd make sure you clearly explain why you are bringing it back and demand one with the manufacturer's tape still on it and then watch them cut it open!
It actually also had a problem with randomly shutting down, so I just took it back and said I needed to exchange it cos of that, cos I was worried about them saying I'd rooted it and thus voided my warranty. The guy at the kiosk actually said he's had several returns of G2xs with power problems. My replacement seems ok so far tho, and was NOT already rooted.
The pre-rooted phone was in pristine state, all the little stickers on it and no fingerprints or anything, so I dunno. My guess would be someone at the factory or something. It was just a really odd thing.
I did have the market do the automatically downloading apps thing, but even if the market had automatically downloaded Superuser, I don't think that would have resulted in a rooted phone, right? And Superuser was definitely in /system, cos it was still there after I wiped the phone before I returned it. Does the market download of Superuser put Superuser into /system? Plus I'd never actually downloaded Superuser via the market. I just really dunno!

Unable to restore my g2x after bricking it with lgtool,but....

Just called tmobile, they offer me an exchange, under the condition that I have to pay the $20 exchange fee. So I took the offer(I'm not even the orignial owner of this phone, bought it when it first came out on CL, kinda surprised me that they offer me the exchange deal).
Anyway, I just have one question to ask. Before I flashed the update through lgtool, I'm pretty sure I already unrooted and flash back to orginial rom and firmwire, So now all I have to do it's to flash stock recovery back on the phone then I'm good to go right?
Thanks in advances.

If you bricked it, it probably doesn't matter, since they can't turn it on and most companies don't check further than that. With stock recovery you should be fine, but that's more of a just in case.
I mean, if it doesn't work even with stock recovery, then it legitimately has to be LG's fault

Insurance question

I just called asurion because of a cracked screen and they sent my replacement g2x out for me . I paid the $130, but should i worry about my phone being rooted?
Also, i book marked the page i used to root on a work computer that is no longer in my possession, i know i used NVflasher to root, but i am aware that just putting the stock recovery back on does not unroot the phone, anyone have a link that might help?
thanks!
No, you shouldn't worry. Just flash the stock ROM and you're good to go.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
actually, going through assurion with the $130 deductible, it doesn't matter what shape you send the phone back in. You can send it in 5000 pieces in a ziplock bag and that's okay. You're good to go.
ok cool, im gonna flash a stock rom just for the hell of it and then send her back. Thanks for the responses!

My Warranty Replacment Experience

Well, to start off the new year right, my original G2x stopped sending/receiving SMS messages under any circumstances, whether it was on wifi, 4G, Edge, or GPRS. I unrooted it and got a new SIM card, still have the same issue (according to the person at the T-Mobile store, I had a "2G SIM card in a 4G phone.") They suggest a whole new phone, and I agree.
One day later with overnight shipping, I get my new G2x, and the first thing I notice is the LG branding in place of the T-Mobile branding. Ignoring that, I turn on the phone only to see dead pixels everywhere, I don't understand how they could have even sent this one out. I call up customer care and they make me go through the whole troubleshooting procedure, and they decided to send me another one. They also told me if this next one had problems, they'd send me a replacement phone of a different model.
So I'm getting a new G2x sent to me tomorrow. I hope this next one works just fine, or I'll have to get a new phone. Also, what replacement phones do they usually offer for the G2x?
I have been through this process, I'm on my third G2x and CC told me if I ha e anymore problems with my G2x then they will give me a different phone.e... When I asked what them replacement model would be the CC Rep told me they could only exchange it for the Sidekick 4G and I told them I would just deal with the G2x and any problems it my have

yea they offer me a sidekick 4g as well, straight up told them no thanks lol, and also i got a replacement that only says "LG" in the front and not tmobile
Guess they got tired of people trading in just for the Sensation 4g.... disappointing.

All of my warranty exchanges have been great! My most recent one had the LG Logo as well. I made a thread about it last month. No problems except a bit of screen bleed.

Thought I'd follow up on my original post. Got my new G2x in the mail, and it's much better. The screen is flawless (no bleeding!), and it was obviously brand new, it still had the original plastic covering on the screen and buttons. Still has the LG branding, but I think I'll live. Overall, a good experience from T-Mobile.

On the g2x if you hold the power and down button, it should just do a master reset, it's not like HTC where it takes you to recovery (correct me if I'm wrong) but just to make sure your unrooted try to download and use a app that requires root
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Thanks! so it doesn't boot into a stock recovery mode to master reset, that's weird I could have swore it had a blue boot screen maybe im thinking of my galaxy.
BTW a little ot but im wondering if you know about mobile security from asurion is it free?
