[Q] Returning a rooted/modified phone? - General Topics

So tomorrow I'm returning my Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.
I'll be returning it to the official AT&T retailer from where I purchased it.
For the sole reason of getting an HTC Inspire 4G instead.
Now..
I called the rep who sold me the phone.
He said I can return it, he'll waive the restocking fee and when asked if I have to reinstall the stock rom and fully restore it to factory condition he simply said "Bro, you don't have to. I don't give a f*ck what you have on the phone"
But i'm not sure if this guy is legit or simply doesn't know sh*t.
This phone is rooted, updated, and nearly all the AT&T bloatware removed.
Is there anyway I can be charged with some sort of penalty later on even though the rep said it's ok for me to return the phone in this condition?

lol .. prolly the latter ...
if you have the free time on your hands id do it in your place

If I were you I'd flash a stock ROM before returning it to AT&T.

yah i think it 's better if you return it to the same state when you receive it.. flash it with x10's stock rom ... before you return it ... but i dont think they will charge you with the phone being modified

Might as well do it, it's not exactly going to take you that long, then there's virtually no chance of being screwed later.

You should definitely do that. Also, there is a chance that he doesn't care but if the phone gets sent somewhere to be restores and they haave your name on file with he phone and stiff, it might void the return and they could charge you for it and ship the phone back.
I'm thinking of returning the Atrix but I only rooted it so you can't really tell something is done. I'm going back to stock anyway though.

[Q] Does the G2x ship pre-rooted?

I just got a g2x from the t-mobile store tonight, and it's already got root. Does the g2x ship pre-rooted, or did I get someone else's return?

Did they pass it off as new? Brand new in a sealed box? I'd be all over this with TMO management if they tried to slip such an item past me as being new.

ouch, you might want to take that back! tell them you found root software on the phone. that phone cost too much for them to sell someone a used phone. especially when they're buying it new. i can see if it was a warranty exchange but come on! they don't even do those in stores anymore.
wow thats BS I'll take it back and demand a credit r something
Does it show uptime?
T-MO's policy is that even if they return the phone after 5 minutes of use, not even leaving the store, so long as the box is open, its a refurbished device and is sold as such. If a rep tried to pull that I'd go back and ask whats going on. Honestly, it's probably a phone that a rep was messing with.
i actually live in northern va too and rooted a phone then returned it cause something was wrong with the battery, maybe you got my return! lol
A big worry would be if you went in and they tried to give you the run around about honoring your warranty by saying you rooted your phone and now you're on your own. Who knows why it was returned in the first place so there is a chance you would need to get support for it.
I'd make sure you clearly explain why you are bringing it back and demand one with the manufacturer's tape still on it and then watch them cut it open!
It actually also had a problem with randomly shutting down, so I just took it back and said I needed to exchange it cos of that, cos I was worried about them saying I'd rooted it and thus voided my warranty. The guy at the kiosk actually said he's had several returns of G2xs with power problems. My replacement seems ok so far tho, and was NOT already rooted.
The pre-rooted phone was in pristine state, all the little stickers on it and no fingerprints or anything, so I dunno. My guess would be someone at the factory or something. It was just a really odd thing.
I did have the market do the automatically downloading apps thing, but even if the market had automatically downloaded Superuser, I don't think that would have resulted in a rooted phone, right? And Superuser was definitely in /system, cos it was still there after I wiped the phone before I returned it. Does the market download of Superuser put Superuser into /system? Plus I'd never actually downloaded Superuser via the market. I just really dunno!

Audio issue. Please help.

Recently I noticed that out of nowhere my audio for me phones speaker stopped working. I know its not something to do with the phones overall sound because plugging in headphones or some other audio cable gives me sound when playing music etc. I don't get any sound when playing music through my phones speaker.
Last known thing I did to my phone was try and reflash leedroid's gb 3.3.3 and then the dhd to inspire + audio fix combo in the op of the Dev thread for the leedroid Rom. Now even after nandroid restoring there is still no sound. Fully wiping doesn't give me sound either.
Did my speaker just decide to take a poop (not the best way to describe the speaker) ?
Let me know if you can help me out. Thanks.

Try flashing back to stock. If still an issue, then you are at stock already and can use warranty on it.

Downloading the RUU that recently came out to go back to stock. Ill see how that goes. Hopefully I don't have to go all the way back to 2.2 froyo stock and unrooted to fix this.
If nothing works as far as flashing then my speakerphone blew some how. I never increased the volume for long periods of time.

Well it's no big deal to back to stock. Just do a nandroid and if you need to flash back to rooted everything is saved. It's probably a connection messed up in the phone, not a blown speaker.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using Tapatalk
So I flashed the stock RUU rom for gingerbread 2.3.3. I'm still rooted because that should mess up the speaker phone.
All in all nothing worked. I called ATT and HTC. ATT wants me to pay $125 for a new phone, yet I paid $99 for the phone when I got it. I have the insurance plan and it's under warranty.
Or see if i can fix it by flashing something.
HTC said, just send in the phone once they get it they will try and fix it as long as they don't detect i'm rooted. I don't know if I should go back to no root for the time being send my phone in get it fixed for free hopefully and wait the 6-10 business days for the phone.
HTC said if they can't fix due to some other issue (most likely warranty being voided) then I would have to pay $35 for labor and shipping. And they won't fix my phone.
So those are my options.
I'd choose the HTC option over $125 from ATT.
Let me hear your opinions.
Thanks

LOL...HTC actually said to you, unprompted, "as long as we don't detect you're rooted"? Or did you subtly and hypothetically bring up the rooting issue? I'm surprised they said that, given the rooting community is so small compared to the general user base. It would be like your local car dealer saying, "Yes, we will fix your new car under warranty as long as you haven't put a new engine in it". Kind of a rare situation that doesn't warrant even mentioning IMO.
I had the same issue for my phone few months back. It's the speaker popping.

Yes only a small number roots, but out of that small number most of their repairs come from rooted phones.

My Warranty Replacment Experience

Well, to start off the new year right, my original G2x stopped sending/receiving SMS messages under any circumstances, whether it was on wifi, 4G, Edge, or GPRS. I unrooted it and got a new SIM card, still have the same issue (according to the person at the T-Mobile store, I had a "2G SIM card in a 4G phone.") They suggest a whole new phone, and I agree.
One day later with overnight shipping, I get my new G2x, and the first thing I notice is the LG branding in place of the T-Mobile branding. Ignoring that, I turn on the phone only to see dead pixels everywhere, I don't understand how they could have even sent this one out. I call up customer care and they make me go through the whole troubleshooting procedure, and they decided to send me another one. They also told me if this next one had problems, they'd send me a replacement phone of a different model.
So I'm getting a new G2x sent to me tomorrow. I hope this next one works just fine, or I'll have to get a new phone. Also, what replacement phones do they usually offer for the G2x?
I have been through this process, I'm on my third G2x and CC told me if I ha e anymore problems with my G2x then they will give me a different phone.e... When I asked what them replacement model would be the CC Rep told me they could only exchange it for the Sidekick 4G and I told them I would just deal with the G2x and any problems it my have

Guess they got tired of people trading in just for the Sensation 4g.... disappointing.

All of my warranty exchanges have been great! My most recent one had the LG Logo as well. I made a thread about it last month. No problems except a bit of screen bleed.

Thought I'd follow up on my original post. Got my new G2x in the mail, and it's much better. The screen is flawless (no bleeding!), and it was obviously brand new, it still had the original plastic covering on the screen and buttons. Still has the LG branding, but I think I'll live. Overall, a good experience from T-Mobile.

On the g2x if you hold the power and down button, it should just do a master reset, it's not like HTC where it takes you to recovery (correct me if I'm wrong) but just to make sure your unrooted try to download and use a app that requires root
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Thanks! so it doesn't boot into a stock recovery mode to master reset, that's weird I could have swore it had a blue boot screen maybe im thinking of my galaxy.
BTW a little ot but im wondering if you know about mobile security from asurion is it free?

Sending phone back to Verizon

I have a question about Verizon accepting phones that are not working well.. I rooted my phone and flashed a rom and now I cannot flash back to original stock. Needless to say, this HTC root is difficult compared to Motorola. So my question is would it be possible to call Verizon and get a replacement phone? No questions asked..
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
Not working well, or not working at all? If its working but having problems, Verizon is going to immediately blame it on any modifications you made while simultaneously telling you your warranty is shot.
On the other hand, if the phone is straight up dead, I can't imagine how they would ever know.
Seriously NO!!!!!!
First of all you rooted your phone which screwed up your warranty and then you Install a custom rom!!.
When you'll go to Verizon center and show them your phone they will strictly say that your warranty is dead and "how the hell did you dare to come to us and ask for a replacement after you flash a custom rom and experiment with your phone"..
LOL I knew I would getting some responses that was similar to "you're **** out of luck!" Never hurts to ask.. And I wasn't going to go to a Verizon store, I was going to call a tech and tell them it was not working right. What would they do once I send the phone back and they discovered it's rooted? Not like they will say I owe them money. Lol

[Q] got told i have to pay to send in bricked Atrix 2. What do i do now?

I finally relented and updated to the official ics update (i know). Phone died during update and subsequently bricked. ( no light nothing wont cut on, ETC). I called motorola and found out phone is under warranty but ill have to pay to send it in. Through out the whole conversation they kept trying to shift the blame to google or att and not take responsibility. So what do i do now? I want my phone fixed and i didnt brick it, they did from the update. But i shouldnt have to pay when its under warranty. Im very fustrated and now know i will never buy another motorola phone.

Well that is a tough one. Was your battery fully charged before you commited to the update? Because if you updated with 50% battery life then the blame will be on you. But, if you had a full battery and the update halted and that's what caused the brick then I would just take it to AT&T and give them a sob story. Depending on how long you have been with them they might work something out with you. It can't hurt to try at this point.
Nope battery was @97 percent when it started installing. I cant send to att because i bought it off contract so the responsibility lies with Motorola.

Unless by some form of magic you can't talk them out of charging you to fix it then you might have to bite the bullet on this one. If you don't mind me asking, how much are they trying to charge you?
They trying to charge me #200.
$200? I bought mine off Craig's list for $100 haha

Wow....$200. I wouldn't pay that much under any circumstances.
Like the other guy said, you should be able to find these phones for less than that on craigslist. Otherwise, you can use this opportunity to pick up something else. For $200, you could pick up an S2 or some other easily modded phone.
