[Q] App to one touch silence notification while phone is locked in pocket? - Android Apps and Games

Maybe somebody here has the programming skillz needed to make this app, but I want to be able to one touch any hardware button to silence a notification AFTER it rings. All the answers i get are to trim my ringtones down more, or get these apps that set up profiles. I like my ringtones where they are, and the profile thing is not what what i need as i have different times for things each day so....
the problem scenario:
I am sitting in a meeting-class-dinner-movie... Etc Etc, anything like that and BAM, I get a text message. It so turns out I forgot to silence my phone before, so here I am with "Dancing Queen" from ABBA playing in my pants.
Current method to deal with said problem:
Either stand up, or lean way back, Pull phone out of pants, Press a hardware button to unlock, Slide to unlock, Enter design code thingy or pin code, and finally, Pull down notification bar to silence "Dancing Queen"
Idea App solution: Hear notification (SMS, MMS, Email, etc) ringtone play, Frantically reach down and press ANY hardware button and instantly silence the ringtone.
Can anybody do this?

DOn't know what phone you're using, pretty much every Android phone I've seen has something like this.

Don't know which phone u are using but my Desire is muted when I press VolDown during an incoming call....

DROID X: and yes, during phone calls, that works. But I said notifications. Emails SMS, MMS, etc.....

Program idea/Suggestion: Stop SMS tone/Vibrate with keypress

hi.. i was thinking of something that may be of use regarding stopping SMS tone sound/vibrate via keypress (or assigned key) or screentap..
maybe if we could have a background program that monitors incoming SMS.. when an SMS comes in, it plays the selected sms tone and/or vibrate - but at the same time, captures all buttons (or an assigned key perhaps - like games) and/or screen areas so that it continues to play the song only if any of these actions (button press or tap) are made -in which the background program will stop the tone and or vibration it is playing..
the thing is, there is really no way of stoping any notification because it is handled by the OS itself..
so, maybe one of the initial requirements for this idea to fully work is to disable the native SMS Sound (and vibrate) notification so that the OS will do nothing upon an incoming SMS.. (it can be done so by unchecking the play sound and vibrate boxes in the incoming text message section of the Sounds and Notifications Settings)
so the SMS notification function (sound and vibrate) will be fully handled by the proposed program suggestion..
imagine it like this..
it is like having a background media player with just 1 song in its playlist and that is your SMS alert tone..
it stays in the background, invisible, but it monitors the sms notification database.
if an incoming SMS (or email whatever) is detected, it starts to play the song in the playlist once..
it then takes control over all physical input controls in the device (buttons, scrolls, volume sliders, touchscreen) - ala buttons locking program - in which all of the input controls are assigned as a STOP playing function..
so when you press a button (or tap the screen whatsoever) the program will stop the background music, unlock all buttons to it's normal functions and returns to the background - awaiting another incoming SMS..
another analogy can be made is that it is like an alarm clock program, it stays in the background, but instead of waiting for a time to strike before activating the alarm, it waits for an incoming SMS (or email whatsoever).. and like alarm programs, it will become activated from the background (so that it will become the top/active window/program) and takes control of the hardware buttons and the screentaps (some alarm programs do this so you can stop the alarm with any button or screen tap).. then after dismissing the alarm, it returns to the background and once again wait.. the only difference is, the active window of this program is invisible, meaning, no visible window will be imposed in the screen (only the title bar will change i presume)..
it sounds simple enough.. but i'm no programmer and i don't have any idea if even half of what i said can easily be done..
i just know that these things can be done because such things have already been done or is a part of exsisting programs.
like detecting incoming SMS (can be done by scripting, or have been done by SMS-like programs)
making a program that resides in the background
making a program that is invisible (not detectable by task manager and has no visible window) even if active
and of course music playback and vibration control (aside from media players most of these are alarm programs)
i hope this can help.. and someone can develop a little program from the idea..
thanks..
here is some reference/source code on detecting incoming SMS .. i don't know if it works because i can't read .net and progy stuff.. but i hope it can help

anyone?
guess programmers are busy.. hehehe..
It's more like nobody's interested.
Though I do kinda miss it when my Nokia stops playing the alert/vibrate when I press a button.. but I'm already ok with it right now.
I just make short alert tones 3 - 5 seconds long.
Ok lang yan pre, mga tao kasi dito ayaw ng may additional background services pa dahil every byte of memory counts. Unless kaya talaga nila baguhin ung notification dll, they won't be interested.
I actually wouldnt mind this as well! Although im not a ppc programmer or anything.
But i cant assign a longer sms tone (The one that goes "Message....Message...Message....") and as it goes longer it slowly goes louder and louder.
Love that sms tone but i cant put it on because i cant stop it by pressing a button - which you could do with normal phones.
Im keen to support and this project if anyone takes it!
(Im glad i wasnt the only person who wanted this!)
thanks for the support guys.. upping this again, hoping that some good programmer can spare some time..
yeah.. i really miss the "normal" phone/notification behavior of other Mobile OS..
the problem is so basic that the big annoyance and inconvinience can't easily be tolerated..
it's been a problem ever since people started using a WM phone (and i've been using WM phones for almost 5 years now)..
they say, just assign shorter tones.. but that is not the point.. doing so is not really a solution.. it is more likely tolerating the problem and adding another problem..
the problem with assigning short SMS tones is that you are limited only to short ones (which is a rarity these days), and most of the times the old school cheesy ones..
cropping and converting tones (mostly from mp3 songs) to shorter ones need a PC (or a special in phone program), which is a hassle all the time.. you can't even download and immediately use tone contents off the web/wap/carrier or use tones sent from other people's phones.. you always need to shorten it up so it won't play infinitely when receiving a text message..
@kabayan da vinci.. mahirap talaga maging iba sa nokia country.. hehe..
up again for someone to notice.. hehe..
up again..
Guess no one really wants this except you and myself ytsejam_....haha...
i don't really get it.. it is an OS/Phone function and SHOULD be given attention.. and should have been so, decades ago.. but people are just plain gaga about skinning and all apps and stuff nowadays are centered on making our WMs into iphones (instead of solving OS problems)..
the basic problems and functions already ignored..
well.. just my 2 cents.. i'm also grateful for the nice skin and plugin apps made in this forum.. and much respect for those people..
and.. please.. no flaming thanks
up again..
Upped, has anyone found an alternative or anything?
Hi, just come across this thread. My Samsung Omnia CAN stop the sound/vibration on incoming SMS by pressing the hang button, dunno if other PPC/PDA's will behave the same way
Btw, my old Nokia 6280 worked exactly the same way, just pressing the hang button
this would be realllly nice.. i just want a normal music ringtone that doesnt have to play for 30 seconds everytime i get a text

hey i want this too... its kinda irritating me u see. i have msg tone which is about 10seconds i cant wait that long to read a msg hehehe so everytime when the SMS tone i playing i read a msg while its playing the nexttime a msg comes the sound does not play at all. So im supporting this one hoping someone could do something with this..
maybe if there was a way to play 2 tones but the second would be silent n play when u open a message that might stop the first tone
Up 1. I support this idea too. It's kinda irritating when u in some meeting or conferences while u forget to silent up ur phone. The tone will keep ringing until it end. Me myself met this situation b4 and the bad experience still irritating me... XD
ytsejam_ : Based from your handle, you must've wanted to assign a Dream Theater song as your text tone... That's why you thought of this... Hehehe!
BTT: I support this idea, as well...
I hadn´t look the full API searching for a solution for there problem, but I imagine that there´s now way stop the SO playing a sound after he started. What could happen is to turn-off all the SO notifications for SMS and use another program to show this notifications... then in this new program includes an option to stop play the sms tone...
Testing in my HTC Touch... when I use the hardware button for setting volume... it stop vibration and playing sound for calls and sms incoming...
some idea
i noticed that you can stop the long sms alert by navigating to sounds & notifications - sms tone , and press stop button ■. maybe someone can find the source code to relate this touch button press to hardware button in order to stop the tones.

Fuze does not ring...

On incoming calls, my Fuze does not ring. I have it set to 'vibrate and ring' and it only vibrates. I have changed ringtones, ring settings, turned it off and back on, soft reset, pulled the battery out, etc and nothing will make my phone ring. All other notifications work (alarms, text messages, etc) and it will work on speaker phone once a call is connected. Is there any advice? I am trying to avoid a Hard-reset because I have the device set-up perfectly to my tastes...

What format is the ring tone in?
My ringtone is the 'Oldphone2' and it is set at'vibrate and ring'. It just spontaneously started this non-ringing thing this morning prompted by no changing of settings. As I said, I tried messing around with the setting after it stopped ringing, but to no avail. And the frustrating thing is that everything else seems to work fine. Argh!
This may seem silly, but have you checked your ring volume? I've had a situation a few times, for no apparent reason after disconnecting from Activesync, where my ring volume was down to 0. Just a thought.
I HAVE SAME PROBLEM, when you turn all to vibrate only and turn it back up . the ring stop working
Yes. all volume settings are up. ringer volume, call volume, media player volume.... Any other suggestions?
i had the same problem just now.. but changing the ringtone back to the ATT default one fixed it. I also use S2U2 and changing the setting for "vibrate when answered" or something like that seems to have fixed it as well.
Hope that helps.
what is S2U2? I have tried changing the ringtone back to ATT default and fiddling with the settings... No help there. This is frustrating. I have to keepmy phone on my desk in front of me so I dont miss any calls. I miss them if the phone is in my pocket.

this happened to me too and i hard resetted. that fixed it , then it started again. come to find out th eproblem was when i hit the volume key on the side i turned system valume up and didnt click on ringer volume to turn it up . i had to smack myself
do texts ringer still work?? if so then im pretty sure you have the same problem i had, check it. good luck though
Do you have the unit face down? It has an auto mute when face down.
I also have an alarm problem, although lights go off, the alarm doesn't ring. I also have problems with ringing on incoming calls. The speaker otherwise works fine. Volumes are turned on appropriately. I have Natfv4.0 installed. Do any of the roms fix this problem?
So somehow the problem fixed itself. Dont know how as I didnt even touch my phone for two days. I just turned it on and -BOOM- it rang a few minutes later. Totally spontaneous issue. Really strange this phone is sometimes...
Boy, do I feel dumb.....Never even noted the un hi-lighted RING volume TAB...
I guess I can't use THAT excuse for not answering calls...
Thanks
Ron
I've been having the same problem. It's very baffling to say the least. I believe it was caused by the newer versions of S2U2. Don't know if it's been discussed in that thread or not. Both times this ringer 'glitch' has occurred, it's been when I've password protected S2U2 in settings. The issue was fixed by turning the password protection off, restarting S2U2, soft resetting my Fuze.
I am having the same problem with incoming calls not playing the ring tone and missing calls. I can guarantee you that the system/ring volume controls are at maximum. I have switched ring tones to no avail. It seems to have something to do with changing the ring type from ring to increasing ring and or visa versa. When I change ring type the problem exists. If I turn system/ring volume to silent and then back to maximum it plays the ring tone just fine. There is a bug in there somewhere! I also see a 'send text' lower left of screen and I hear a blurp sound or two in the background wihile the ringtone is playing when the phone is ringing. Anyone else have any issues like this? If so or you have a fix please send it to [email protected] I'm new to this forum stuff and don't really know how to use it. Hope I didn't break any rules.
Thank you,
Trent Alexander
I just have the callers complaining that I take too long to answer the phone. I called myself, and it took 3 1/2 rings for my Fuze to ring...anyone else?
Great PPC, Lousy Phone
Mine too. I just tried it and it does not ring until seven seconds after the light starts flashing. Not only that, it will not retain a custom ring tone. I try to use Old Phone 2 but it reverts to the default on its own.
My vario iv also suffers from the missing ring tone- reboots sometimes help but not always.
I too have had to learn not to rely on the alarm- goes off some days and then not on others.
Just now I thought that I would try to play an mp3 to see if that works- I pressed play and then waited for the track to start- no sound- seconds later the screen changed and touchflow launched itself (again) went back to the home tab and the sound is back?????
Same problem... it stopped ringing...
one thing I notice is that if the number calling is private or block it will only light up (no ring) but from a caller with Caller ID open the phone will ring...
strange...

Vibrating while on a call?

"You know what really grinds my gears..."
Why does the phone vibrate when on a call? Seriously - this should be built into the operating system. A notification sound will suffice. It's so annoying to have a vibrations all on your earlobes. Is there a way (app) to configure this? Anyone else feel me or am I making a big deal about this?
Never noticed mine vibrate,
what is the notification for?
I turn off all in-call notifications though.

In-call notifications? Where is that? The vibrations come from sms messages.
Never noticed that.. but I have had the 'smart alarm' go off while I was talking on the phone. Was quite convenient.
And apparently it is audible enough to hear on the other end as several people have inquired as to what the noise was.

Mine doesn't vibrate when on call. Just gives a beep, maybe because I turn off vibrating notification in the sound and display setting
Wow. So I'm the only one that uses vibration for text messages? Also noticed it vibrates while charging - this also mystifies me because I don't see why anyone would need it to vibrate while being charged. Is this not common sense? I wonder if this happens with other android devices?

No, this happened to me several times. I eventually just turned off the vibrations all together. I agree, it would be nice to get a notification tone in the ear if you have the vibrate function on.
Have you tried Handcent SMS? It has great customizations for the vibration feature, among other things. Even different vibration patterns for distinct individuals. Give it a shot - might be what you're looking for.

I need the vibrate alert far too much to disable it all together. I rarely hear my phone, but almost always feel it.

Why would you not want it to vibrate while charging? During calls I could see (I have the same complaint actually), but why during charging?
+1 for a solution to this. Way too annoying when your on a call and you get a txt message but turning off vibrate is not an option.

Well, if the phone is charging its obviously plugged in. If its plugged in, its not in my pocket...its probably on a table or desk. Why do I want it to vibrate on the desk? If I'm not touching it, I can't feel it so an audible alert is good enough...
Its annoying sure, but I don't make enough phone calls for it to be really a bother. Oh well.

Is there a phone in the market that upon sensing external power it automatically switches notification type? Pike
I've had a quite a few smart phones (or so I thought) and don't recall any if them doing that.
Then again, if it's charging, it's not in your pocket. Switch notification to audible and problem solved. Takes all of one second.

All of my previous phones were running Symbian - none of them vibrated while on the phone or charging (moot point really).
Who wants to remember to switch their notifications to anything after a phone event happens? While you're at it, why not tell people to make sure they turn off their ringtones when they place or receive a call. Same logic. Doesn't make much sense to me...
I agree. Other phones I've had don't turn vibrate off when plugged in. I think they should, but they don't. So you can't really call this a "defect" with the Captivate.
However, I don't recall any of the other phones I've had vibrating in your ear when you are on a call. To me, that is a oversite with the dialer app and should be fixed.
I agree with you. I have had the think vibrate my ear off a few times.
One thing that really pisses me off is the dialer with an incomming call. ITs a pain in the ass to actually answer the call. Intead of it answering when you swipe, you have to go through 3 steps:
-Swipe
-pick end call or hold call
-swipe again to answer.
Im going to start a new thread to see if anyone knows how to answer call waiting instantly without these steps.
Here's an app I quickly made that disables the notificiation vibrator when in a call. It is a very simple/minimal app with no icons to run, or settings to change. Just don't uninstall while in a call or the vibrate setting will remain off. I only tried it with Call + Gmail vibrate.
hth
Got ya.
Its just a matter of how i use my phone. When my phone is charging, most of the time its on vibrate and i feel the vibration in the table/desk or hear it on my night stand.
I just didn't make the jump in logic.

First off, my apologies for not proof reading my poor swyping abilities.
What I was trying to state is that if it bothers you so much that the phone should ring as opposed to vibrate when plugged in , it just takes a second to change the notification type. Not sure what is there that doesn't make sense?
The vibrating in your ear, is totally understandable, hence why i didn't comment on that. IF my phone vibrated while it's on my ear, i'd be upset too.

I don't think you have sms vibrations set or maybe you're using non-stock rom - it's under the messages application. You had me for a minute cause I never checked call settings\all calls. Nonetheless - no that doesn't work. It still vibrates on a call.

Thanks I appreciate the effort. Unfortunately it seemed to turn off the vibrations all together. Lol. Even when I'm not on a call it doesn't vibrate. Can we get a second iteration? Please?
Thank you guys for the Handcent and ChompSMS suggestions. These seem to handle the message events the way I expect as they allow for in-call vibration alert customizations. Unfortunately they take over and get rid of my message puzzle pieces (cheezy I know, but I've grown to like those little things). I'm so picky - but that's what great about android right? Endless customizations!
I defintely would be interested in a less intrusive way to deal with the issue (i.e NoInCallVibrate)

App to one touch silence notification while SOUND IS ALREADY PLAYING.

Sorry for the Caps, but I asked this question a few months back, and all I got were apps to set up profiles. I could care less about those.
I want a process running in the background that will allow me to silence an incoming notification (MMS, SMS, Email, FaceBook, Battery Low, Connected to computer, etc etc).
Example: Sitting in surprise meeting, and forgot to silence my phone. If I were to get a phone call, I can mash the hard buttons through my pants, and the ringtone goes silent, just like that. I want that functionality for a notification sound. Say, somebody sends me a text message, and for that individual i have "Bye Bye Bye" from N'Sync as their ringtone.
If that were to happen in the meeting, I would have to adjust, pull my giant phone out of my pocket, wake up the screen, unlock it, then pull down the notification bar. By the time I silenced the phone, the song would have through the second verse, and my reputation shattered.
So, if theres any apps like that, I would love to know about them.
Current phone Droid X with Liberty 1.0 ROM.
Any one?

[Q] Different Volume Settings for Notifications

Is it possible to have different volume settings for different notifications? I'm coming from a BlackBerry Bold, and I was able to set specific ring tone AND volume for each app that I used.
I've only found one notification volume setting in Sounds and Notifications, but when I turn this all the way down, I don't hear text messages coming in either.
I do know how to change notification sounds for each app...this I can do, but not separate volume settings.
I'd like to have a different volume setting for incoming Skype messages, a different volume setting for an active Words with Friends game, a different volume setting for text messages, bla, bla, bla! I was able to do this in my BB for each app, and am hoping this is possible in the T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide!
If not, is there an app that does this?
I'd also like to be able to shut off all notifications when I go to bed, but leave the volume a little higher for incoming phone calls and texts (kids, just in case...), but I don't want to hear any of my game notifications going off all night!
I'm absolutely loving my new toy, even coming from a BB!
thanks so much!!!
