[Q] Android Search n Rescue! - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi im an N1 user and would like to ask if there is any app on the market which will help me with search and rescue of my phone.
It must be compatible with all versions of android (my sister is still having to work with 1.6 on the Tattoo!)
It must provide a facility wherein a background process will run and detect that a new SIM card has been inserted send the new SIM pin number (or better still the actual tel no of the sim inserted) to a predesignated number via SMS. This way, the GPS being on/off or the wifi/gprs/3G activity is not a requirement.
Probably the only workaround would be if the thief is smart enough to reinstall the entire OS on the phone before putting in the new SIM. (then i guess im just screwed!)
looking forward to the experts input here at xda.
Thanks.

Need help recovering Text Messages

Howdy folks,
This isn't smartphone question, but many people here seem to be very smart and I'm hoping that someone can help. Here's my situation: A coworker has a pending legal matter with a ex-significant other. Part of the evidence includes text messages that were sent to her. However, her old phone has since "broken." The only key that works is the red button. It powers on, powers off, but will do nothing else.
This is a Nokia phone, I'm not sure the model number but relatively recent. My question: Where are the text messages stored? I pulled the SD card and there's nothing on it. I can plug in the phone to a USB port on my computer, but all the folders that I can access via that method are just songs or vids she loaded. Are the messages stored on the SIM? Would putting the sim into a new phone allow us to access those messages? Or is this something that she needs to subpoena the service provider to get? I'm very un-knowledgeable on this to any help you can give would be appreciated.
Again, sorry to ask an off topic question, but I do hope someone can help.
text messages are usually stored either on the phone's internal chip (default) or the sim card. The best way in my opinion is somehow "remotely control" the phone (my mobiler has a similar function for windows mobile), or swap the hardware of an identical phone so you can get the phone working (dangerous)
Thanks Danni... I'm not sure of any software like "MyMobiler" for non-smartphones though.

[Q] void.#forever won't recognizing sim card (LG-P500)

My original intention was to post this on the void forever thread, but due to restrictions on my forum account I was unable to. Any help would be appreciated.
I flashed the ROM onto my optimus p500, it was running perfectly and made the phone feel like more comparable to a high end android than to a starter level one like the p500, my compliments to the developer, but my only problem was that the phone wouldn't recognize the sim card. I could connect to wifi, radio, etc. but I had no signal, and not even the option to make an emergency call. The baseband value was set to unknown, and there were no APN values, and when I tried to add them in and clicked save, nothing showed up on the list, even after refreshing it.
So my question is, how can I make it so that I can use this amazing ROM, but still maintain my phone service?
Bump, anyone have a suggestion?

[Q] Help a noob learn to beat the system?

AT&T Developer Program has sent me a new HTC Aria (HTC Intruder).
I've never had a SmartPhone. Imagine that. But I am a web developer with reasonable skills in that context and want to start deploying to mobile devices.
The device has no SIM and doesn't really do anything. So I have to learn if it is possible to get a SIM, have it configured somehow so I can use the phone --only-- at WiFi spots so I do not have to buy a voice and data plan --or-- hopefully other developers can recommend strategy and tactics to help me get this phone operable so I can at least install my own HTML5 apps and test viewing them and such.
izitso?
canitbe?
You don't need a sim card to use Voip, wifi or apps...
You dont need a SIM card to use wifi, apps, or things like that. Why you say that what message the smartphones gives to you ?
I also dont think u need any wifi to use developer mode on the phone for apps...if you hit setting and hit apps you will see development

If you root the device, you can (backup first!) delete the contents of the /efs folder. This will scrub the IMEI of your device, and it will revert to an unbranded "generic" IMEI instead. Once you have done this, you can simply use an AT&T GoPhone SIM card on it without issue.

Thank you. That's what I think I'll look into then because I can currently cope with GoPhone terms.

Carrier splash screen loads then displays "No SIM card in Phone" with red ! warning icon and asks Please inseart a SIM card but I now get into settings tonight (wierd).
I think I have to try WiFi in a coffee shop or try some "official" WiFi hotspot for ATT to determine if the carrier imposes using their WiFi and only their WiFi.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

What? Wi-fi is wi-fi. The carriers do not make you use "their" wi-fi. You want to develop, but you are having problems with the very very basics here.

Yea I know I said that right out I am a noob "in this context." I have no idea how the carriers have or have not modified Android to maintain control of the devices they load their branded modifications on.
Hence if a phone is "locked" I presumed a carrier could cripple the use before a SIM card representing a customer account was installed and configured to operate the phone further.
I also know what rooting does but not the effects of any changes to UI afterwards. Again, its been my presumption that part of operating the device is added by a carrier using some kind of mobile development framework that may or may not be available after rooting.
Rooting doesn't change the framework. Its actually quite a simple concept: you add a superuser binary to the system ROM which the user has permission to execute. In order to control access to the binary, people generally install the superuser application off the market AFTER initially rooting their phone.
The trick is finding a way to write the new superuser binary to a read only file system.

[Q] Software updates, error everytime

Hi guys,
Hope you don't mind me jumping straight in and asking a question.
We have a Xoom here, It was sold to us as a Xoom WiFi 32Gb and came with a US style charger (we live in UK).
Now this Xoom has a sim card slot in the same place as the MicroSD slot, The sim card slot has the metal contacts needed to use the sim card also.
Does this mean it's not the WiFi version? As the software does not have any mention on how to use the software or any network options relating to mobile internet etc.
Also it keeps popping up with the same update constantly, when we click install it restarts and the Android character appears with a moving cog... then suddenly has a exclamation mark within a triangle (error). The only way to use the device again is to hold the power button and volume up to reset.
Then once rebooted we are prompted to install the same update again.
The person we bought it from says it was "never rooted" although I'm not familiar with "rooting".
Any ideas what is going on?
Cheers,
It is most likely wifi only. Every Xoom has the sim slot, but they don't all have the actual antenna.
I can't help you with your update problem, but I've seen the solution pop up in threads around the place. Or someone could hop in and help.
Either way, you need more info. Go to Settings > About. Give the info that is there, and we can perhaps point you to a solution.

[Completed] Help

Hi,
Recently i bought a xolo q700s.
After inserting the reliance sim card, it worked good for about an hour, and after that it pops up a message every now and then about the available balance in the sim. Initially I thought it might be happening because of the power management app which switches off data services and hence it pops up the message about the remaining balance.
But currently I am not using any data package, and i disabled the power management app which came pre installed with xolo.
But still the problem is not solved, and it is really irritating to get the notification at night time and while playing any games.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
There might be another app that provides balance notification. It gets triggerred when you turn Data on or off. That's the one providing such notifications.
But currently I am online using WIFI for internet access , and the data connection is always off, and still I am getting these notification on regular basis, precisely 7 to 8 notifications every hour.
I removed the sim and inserted in the second slot as this phone is a dual sim phone , and still it's the same, and a bit worse, the phone doesn't recognise any contacts from the sim when i inserted it in the second sim slot.
Also if i root this phone, will i be able to solve this problem?
I believe Rooting will help you remove one of the System apps that might be causing this. You can ask the carrier if they could tell you which app provides these notifications. You can disable that app without rooting. Such apps are typically called Carrier Bloat. The app seems to be giving notifications every time you toggle Data.
Having said that, this discussion is going beyond the parameters of XDA Assist. The Mission statement is posted as a sticki, in the Root of this forum. I see that you have posted your query in this thread. That is the correct place for the discussions on this topic.
