[Q] Best Nexus S Rom?

Hi guys,
I was wondering if I could get some advice. I had the Nexus One and had Cyanogen running on it, which I loved. I got the nexus S at christmas and love it... the random reboots did annoy me until 2.3.3 came out. Recently I rooted the phone and flashed modaco custom ROM based on 2.3.3 with the KB3 radio and GRI 54 base.
I was wondering if your guys opinions, what is the best ROM to flash, that is stable, with not random boots etc. but an improvment on what I have?

They're all great. Try them all and see which you like the best.

Personally, I like CM 7 because of the T-Mobile theme engine that allows me to change the appearance of the ROM with the touch of a button. No more constant flashing of themes for me!

I've tried a lot and although they all have their advantages I always come back to CM. It generally picks up all the great little mods that the community develop not to mention all its own great features.
Bear in mind that it is still not technically stable yet though R2 has been pretty good for me with only a couple of reboots since installing on the day it was released. Once we get the full stable CM7 it will be a tough one to beat

I will elaborate. I've run every ROM available since January (when I got my NS). I've tried almost every release of those ROMs as well and I can honestly say that they are all awesome for different reasons. I try really hard not to be biased to one ROM or one developer because it tends to cloud your ability to try different things with an open mind. Right now I have NANDroid backups of CM7rc2, MIUI, Axura, NSCollab, Stock 2.3.3, Stock 2.3.3 Deodexed, and Honeycomb.
I'm always sad to see these thread because I think its asking the wrong question altogether. What these threads should ask is "What is your daily driver?" because "best" is so subjective to uses and personal preference. What some love about CM7 is also what many other hate. The iOS look of MIUI is both on of its most loved and hated qualities. Whatever tweaks a particular dev or team of devs seems fit to include may be exactly what a person wants or what a person doesn't want.
Now, I've said my diatribe and I'll answer the other question: "What is your daily driver?"
I have two. Some days I run CM7rc2, some days I run Axura. Once the white background issue is cleared up in MIUI, I'll add that to the rotation as well.

Cm7. Other roms are good for if you're bored and want to flash something new. Pretty sure everyone ends up on cm7 for stability and features better than stock.

Axura is my everyday driver. Its fast and its been the most stable for me.

I must agree entirely. I tried CM7 for awhile but it wasn't stable enough for me. I've never had a ROM as stable and fast and clean looking as Axura! I'd recommended at least giving a few of them a try though. The stickied thread by Kenvan is a wonderful resource!

CM7 for me.. the settings that CM7 offer are just too good to give up.

Axura for speed and animation, and CM for usability.

I'm a sense guy,so not much exp. with cm. My foggy memory believes that cm7(rc for release canidate) is ready for everyday use public consumption. Nightlies are built by(here's where my memory goes! Gimme a break I'm old!) a bot which fixes and changes things,which may or may not break other things. That about the extent of my knowledge on this. The experts on this should be on they're way. lol

I'm no expert but the cm7 stable is android 2.3.3 the cm7 rc-1 is 2.3.4 the latest nightlies are 2.3.5.. I recommend the nightlies, they are more stable in many ways than the stable version of.. The latest is #179

This is standard software development stuff.
"Nightlies" are like alpha level software containing the absolute latest bug fixes and new features for an existing program with little or no testing outside of the developers. Whether the various features and fixes are compiled by a daemon or not is irrelevant. Some nightlies are very stable with few bugs, some are bug riddled garbage. I'm currently using the CM7 nightly from 9-1, and I've found it to be very stable and only had one or two small issues.
The experimental releases are release candidates, which is just a friendly term for a late stage beta. Generally, they may contain more bugs than what should be released, but the developers released them into the wild because they believed the to be close to ready for release and needed more people would test them.
A Stable version is just that, stable. It has been extensively tested and either has no bugs, or has only minor bugs that have all been well documented.
Which should you use?
You've got a few sensible options.
a. Stick to stable releases. You'll miss out on the latest and greatest developments, but your shift will be as stable and reliable as possible.
b. Install every nightly as they come out. (they don't actually come out every night, we haven't had a new one since 9-1) If you get a bad one, which happens, just roll back to the last one that worked for you. You will spend a lot of time messing with your phone and will have to deal with bugs, but you'll always get to try out the latest and greatest. Just be sure that when you have bugs, you share useful bug reports with the developers.
c. Start with the stable. If you find there are things broken that you don't want to miss, go through the changelogs and forums to find a more or less stable nightly that has what you're missing and move to it. Stay there until there's another stable release.

wow thank you guys for the usefull information. I'm normally a sense rom guy so this is kinda a new ball game for me. I decided to go with this due to I hear its way faster and has more space .

I am looking for a good roms for the AT&T Captivate...... And I do not want to use CM at all. I had CM 7.1 installed and it crashed the second day....

I hate to have to say it, but you're asking the same question as, "What is the best flavor of ice cream for me?". None of us can tell you what that would be - you just have to keep licking them until you find one that you like.

Sorry dude, this thread is going to get locked soon. The only advice even experts will give here is to read. Read at least the first and last 5 pages of each of the ROMs. It gives good idea if any one is facing particular issues.

I say read the middle 5-10 pages, so you can be thoroughly confused by topics that most likely have already been resolved on versions that have long since been outdated!

The analogy of asking someone else what your favorite flavor of ice cream is, works very well..
Also, don't let one bad experience with a rom ruin the rom for you for good.
I mean, sometimes you do get a bad sample..

i honestly think you should give cm7 another shot. i am using mine with the glitch kernel which allows me to overclock it to 1.7 ghz and increased stability for me atleast.

The best one for me is froyo Continuum 4.1 with jk4 modem and xcalibur 2.3.5 kernel. I need stable and decent battery with a good amount of tweaks.
Ran CM 7.1 stable but battery was not good for me. Really enjoyed the tweaks.

howmydictate, as others have said, read up and make your own decision.

Android 2.3

I realise that the alpha/beta of ICS has been released but why is it there is no development on 2.3 roms at the moment. Sure people want to have the best ICS rom but seriously I am sick of the constant crashes and "this application isnt supported by your device" on the Android market.
Hopefully the developers focus on the actual stable roms and not silly pre-releases.

To each his own! I completely disagree, I don't understand what you're asking for, 2.3 roms seem good to go and stable as it is. What else do you want done? Also, I for one don't consider it "silly" pre-releases. Even though ICS has yet to be complete it's far better than what GB has been for me. ICS is also the one that needs some work on, hence the crashes and stuff (I don't experience any at all). If GB is working without crashes and is STABLE, what updates are you looking for? If it's working great, then you don't need to update! Although there are some apps which are yet compatible, it doesn't affect users such as myself.

Considering I haven't experienced a single crash on Baad's InsertCoin ICS ROM, I have no idea what you are talking about. I suppose one could also question why the Windows Mobile and Palm ROM development forums haven't seen much action...what more is there to do to working stable ROMs? Or better yet, why bother

Speaking for myself, I'd like a stable (i.e. not alpha) release of CM7 for my new Sensation. I agree with the OP, if the CM devs are blocked waiting for HTC to release ICS, why not polish off a stable CM7 release? I'm in the process of pulling down source to see if I can help. I'm an embedded Linux developer during the day, but being new to android development and only having one phone (and a wife and kids), I'm not expecting anything but getting my feet wet by the time ICS comes out on this phone. I'm grateful that CM exists, just wish there was a non-alpha mod for my new phone.

Well I guess they did not want to waste time polishing CM7, where in 1-2 months time, everyone will be expecting them to release CM9 for sensation. Let's say they release a super stable CM7 by the end of Feb, people will be using it for only a month before switching to CM9. Might as well wait for ICS.

Speaking for myself again, I'd prefer to use a solid CM7 until CM9 is just as stable. It was more than 1-2 months before CM7 stable enough to put on my MT4G. But I understand it is the culture here to regularly flash new stuff, even if there's no good reason to, and I'm not knocking that, I've done it too. Which is why I'm either returning this phone for a SGS2, or getting to work on my own (wow, 4.5 hours to sync the CM GB repo!).

While waiting for the CM code to sync, I went over to htcdev.com and clicked their comments link to "Tell HTCdev what YOU want". I explained that I would like full source code for my HTC phone like LG and Samsung provide for their phones (at least the diffs from the open source code). I didn't really expect to get it, and was not surprised when the reply was no - they only release the Linux kernel source because they're bound to by license. But it made me realize that I had purchased the wrong phone. So I returned it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the SGS2 is quite functional and performant out of the box, and the source easily available from Samsung. So long HTC...

What are some stable KitKat Roms?

OK so my last thread got closed because the mods didn't want it turning into a 'this is the best' fight. So I'm not asking that, I simply want to know what KitKat Roms are available that are stable builds, looking in the development forum all I see are nightly Roms and I don't want to be installing updates every day.

From my understanding they all on nightly. At least i haven't seen one thread posted as STABLE. And ive tried different Kk roms. And for some ppl wasn't stable and for others was a DD worthy. I suggest reading them post to see wat catches ur eye. I know thats not the answer u want. But front me thats the best i can give. Try LS Beanstalk SOKP SlimKat Gummi.

You do not have to install nightly roms everyday. If one nightly is running "smoothly," leave it alone for a short bit until there some major bug fix, new features added, etc., or when rom starting to act up.

The only one I've seen so far that's claimed to be "Stable" is SlimKat: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2400577. Actually it looks like they just released a new stable version yesterday for our phone, Build 5.

I agree with this about slim. It's a very stable ROM. There are however, alternatives. I'd suggest you try a few and see which ROM's have the best combination of features and stability for you. I've been a huge fan of slim for quite some time now, but recently, I've been running Nameless ROM. I've ran a nightly from the first of the month, and since then have had only one instance where the phone randomly rebooted. In fact, that's the only time I've rebooted it. LOL. For me it has the features I'm looking for without having to resort to using the Xposed framework. I have nothing against Xposed, it's always worked great for me, but I just prefer to have features baked in if at all possible.
I'm sure there's a ton of other good roms too, many people like Gummy, Beanstalk, Paranoid, PACMAN (can't think of the exact name), and GideonX's builds of various roms (check them out at droidhype.net), liquid, Carbon, and other's are nice too. Many have too many featues for me, and some have not enough or lack what I'm looking for.
So again, Try a few and see what YOU like. That's the best answer I can give. I doubt that many are "stable", but they've been stable enough for me. As I mentioned with Nameless, they're not labeled as stable, and nightlies are just that, nightlies, but you'll find that most nightlies are "stable"

Also, what others consider stable may not be what you consider stable as that standard can be very subjective.

I've been using Mastamoon's 4.4 for a few weeks now and it's been pretty damn stable for me. I'm a few days behind on updating nightly so that I don't run into any bugs, but I was happy with his 4.3 ROM back in the day and his 4.4 is turning out just as good.
