Android 2.3 - HTC Sensation

I realise that the alpha/beta of ICS has been released but why is it there is no development on 2.3 roms at the moment. Sure people want to have the best ICS rom but seriously I am sick of the constant crashes and "this application isnt supported by your device" on the Android market.
Hopefully the developers focus on the actual stable roms and not silly pre-releases.

To each his own! I completely disagree, I don't understand what you're asking for, 2.3 roms seem good to go and stable as it is. What else do you want done? Also, I for one don't consider it "silly" pre-releases. Even though ICS has yet to be complete it's far better than what GB has been for me. ICS is also the one that needs some work on, hence the crashes and stuff (I don't experience any at all). If GB is working without crashes and is STABLE, what updates are you looking for? If it's working great, then you don't need to update! Although there are some apps which are yet compatible, it doesn't affect users such as myself.

Considering I haven't experienced a single crash on Baad's InsertCoin ICS ROM, I have no idea what you are talking about. I suppose one could also question why the Windows Mobile and Palm ROM development forums haven't seen much action...what more is there to do to working stable ROMs? Or better yet, why bother

Speaking for myself, I'd like a stable (i.e. not alpha) release of CM7 for my new Sensation. I agree with the OP, if the CM devs are blocked waiting for HTC to release ICS, why not polish off a stable CM7 release? I'm in the process of pulling down source to see if I can help. I'm an embedded Linux developer during the day, but being new to android development and only having one phone (and a wife and kids), I'm not expecting anything but getting my feet wet by the time ICS comes out on this phone. I'm grateful that CM exists, just wish there was a non-alpha mod for my new phone.

Well I guess they did not want to waste time polishing CM7, where in 1-2 months time, everyone will be expecting them to release CM9 for sensation. Let's say they release a super stable CM7 by the end of Feb, people will be using it for only a month before switching to CM9. Might as well wait for ICS.

Speaking for myself again, I'd prefer to use a solid CM7 until CM9 is just as stable. It was more than 1-2 months before CM7 stable enough to put on my MT4G. But I understand it is the culture here to regularly flash new stuff, even if there's no good reason to, and I'm not knocking that, I've done it too. Which is why I'm either returning this phone for a SGS2, or getting to work on my own (wow, 4.5 hours to sync the CM GB repo!).

While waiting for the CM code to sync, I went over to htcdev.com and clicked their comments link to "Tell HTCdev what YOU want". I explained that I would like full source code for my HTC phone like LG and Samsung provide for their phones (at least the diffs from the open source code). I didn't really expect to get it, and was not surprised when the reply was no - they only release the Linux kernel source because they're bound to by license. But it made me realize that I had purchased the wrong phone. So I returned it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the SGS2 is quite functional and performant out of the box, and the source easily available from Samsung. So long HTC...

Looks that way, I'm sure after the Amaze and GS2 release it will die even more
The phone is getting old. Going on 6 months, that's ancient!
Well, people have lives outside of XDA. haha
Don't forget ICS is coming out in a little more than a month. I'm sure once that happens, development will pick back up again.
Also, there are only so many things you can do to a rom. Most of the roms here work perfectly. There are a few bugs in some (such as a2dp on 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 based roms) that probably won't ever get fixed because nvidia will not release their source code. (And before everyone jumps up complaining, they are under no legal obligation to do so. They come from the video card world, and it's VERY cut-throat, they don't release their sources because they don't want competitors seeing how they do things.) But once you get the rom running perfectly as a daily driver, what's there to update? With the exception of cm7 nightlies and miui "weeklies", minus minor bug fixes, there isn't really too much more to update.

Don't see a whole lot of rant in that post, but anyway. I feel that your view on whether to go CM or MIUI is spot on. I understand that people have a preference, but when I have seen and tried devices with both I end up with largely the same experience. Taste is all it comes down to!
i am very thankful for Cyanogen Mod. Never tried MIUI

I'm glad that there are so many developers interested in porting CM to various devices. It's the only thing that makes using a non-Google phone/tablet usable for me. I can't wait for stable CM9.
I love CM, the ability for themes is awesome. I currently use the ICS theme and it doesn't even look close to stock Gingerbread. And it is the most stable ROM that I've experienced, too.
Nice post, I never tried AOSP or MIUI and just recently got into using CM roms. Gave me more information on the new roms I've been seeing. I would agree you don't rant too much nor go into too much detail as the pros or cons of each variation of the mods.
I had CM7 with my Desire Z,
now with Sensation, I'm currently tryin InsertCoin 4.0.X
Can't really deside, both have their ways
I am hoping that they port over CM7 or CM9 to the sensation xl. Im currently running the bindroid rom which is good but really holding out for cyanogenMod.

i tried CM and MIUI and i prefer MIUI absolutely!
In my opinion, I think that CyanogenMod will surpass stock Android when it comes to features and stability, eventually.
It probably already has... when you consider that its on yaffs2 and not ext4
Stability?
I have been using CM7 ever since I got tired of rooted stock. The first version I installed was 7.0.0, which lasted about 4 months until it started wigging out. I flashed 7.0.3, and that was great until three weeks later it started exhibiting the same problems as the previous version. I reflashed the same version and had a little more success, lasting without error until 7.1.0 Stable was released. Since October, I've had to reflash at LEAST 5 times, due to instability. Now don't get me wrong, when CM7 works it REALLY works well. When it doesn't...my phone is worthless until I reflash. I would LOVE to know why everything starts force closing after x amount of time, as I'm really getting tired of setting things up the way I want them each and every time. *steps down from soap box*
i loved CM7 on my N1
Good too read a review about something which isn't commercially developed.

anyone still on cm7, passing on all current ICS roms, and waiting for CM9?
I've been using CM7 since it came out. I flashed virt. quatto just to see what ICS looks like, then went back to CM7.
post here if you are like me!
ive been waiting for a stable CM7 on the sensation for over a year now... CM7 alpha10 is pretty close but still not a daily driver.. i dont see a stable CM9 on our phones within the next year.. there are some good AOSP ICS roms though like Virtuous Inquisition which will have to do for now. ever since Samsung hired Cyanogen, you pretty much need a Samsung phone (Galaxy Nexus) for good CM support
the only reason i am using a Sensation right now is because it is the only high end phone (dual core) that supports my $5/mo tzones plan, else I would probably have a Galaxy S2 or the Nexus right now since i much prefer CyanogenMod
I'm in same situation
several past phones (Desire GSM, Atrix 4G) and current Pyramid are on CM7.1
I use Automatic Backlight feature, it's absent in other ROMs, I like Dialer and Contacts in CM.
Tried multiple ICS ROMs but I am unable to use them. Cannot remove contact's pictures from contact list (I don't use concact pictures at all), no adjustable automatic backlight, Volume rocker Wake and so on.
I do not use Google Account at all, all programs I install manually after flashing ROM. No market app, no Gmail, no GTalk. No Sence.
CM is the best for me
I have many phones flashed to CM7.1 and tried the alpha 10 for sensation too. But there are many lacks (e.g. reboot when recording video, battery after 10 hours down to 20%) so I went back and waiting for CM9.
This is my own opinion, I don't believe well even get an alpha build of any kind from kmobs at this point of development even in the next year or two years. I asked him about it an he said he was compiling it at that time.
It tells me a lot by that response from him. That he is a perfectionist that want to do everything by himself an I'm pretty sure that he's gotten help by cm team. And that since he got a GN and amaze he may be too busy to focus on sensation. He said he isn't working on those two but I mean if you had to pick between those two and sensation I might pick them.
The best way to get fixes is by yes providing him log cats towards certain issues but at the same time having the source helps so it can pinpoint the source of the issue in the build.
Many devices have already been merged and I think one or two were made after the sensation was released. Whether its fair or not he has the most updated source for pyramid and we as the people only have nothing but watch and wait

I agree. Kmobs is still a kid afterall. Hes in school and needs to focus on college if you ask me. He bought a GN for $500.00 out of pocket despite telling us how great his sensation was running his build of ICS. Even though it is his money, its pretty irresponsible for a college student to do. Needing a new phone is one thing, but wanting something newer to play with is another.
I dont think it will take a year to get CM9 to the sensation, as I feel Kmobs will eventually turn over what he has done to someone else on the CM team and they will finish it for us. All his G+ posts seem to focus on the fun he is having with his GN.
Yea its free, but it would be nice of him to turn over what he has to another respected developer in the spirit of open source and all...If he hasnt got the time for CM9, then maybe someone else does. Keep in mind, CM is thinking about starting a for profit marketplace. It would be good business to get CM9 out for the maximum number of phones if they want the maximum number of customers. The sensation might not be all that popular though...
Maybe someone from the CM team could speak to him about turning over the project?

Off Topic. Thread title is "anyone still on cm7, waiting for cm9? passing on all current ICS roms"
I could personally care less about CM9. I am running CM7 now and it works fine. I considered flashing an ICS ROM but they all suck right now. Personally if there was a pure vanilla Android ROM (Gingerbread or ICS) I would run that. If CM9 is the closest I will get to AOSP ICS then I guess I will use that whenever (if??) a stable release ever comes out for the Sensation. To be honest I might even be using a Nexus by that time since development for the Sensation is basically dead.

I counted seven flavours of Sensation ICS ROMs discussed and most are available somewhere online. Only the kmobs 'official' CM9 seems to be lost this year.
On Rootzwiki I asked if the following list was up to date. Here it is. Some exist and some are not, but all are Sensation-specific ROMs in development or possible development.
Will we get up to TEN 'unique' Sensation ROMs soon?
1. TripNRaver already has released three betas of his AOSP ROM for Sensation, over at Modaco.
2. HTC Leaked ICS ROM. Lots of tuning and updates of the major 'brands' of Sensation ROMs at XDA Sensation Developers forum, for 4.03 ICS and Sense 4.0 leak.
3. Virtuous Quattro (AOSP) ported to Sensation at XDA Developers forum.
4. MIUI developer petitioned to release a Sensation ICS MIUI (250+ votes for it). 新年快樂 !
5. TripNRaVer previously mentioned he could do an ICS MIUI port once the CM9 Sensation ROM was working.
6. TripNRaVer yesterday released his own CM9 beta ROM for Sensation.
7. Cyanogenmod 9 team (Keyan Mobli aka kmobs, others?) may be still developing the CM9 ROM, unless there has been any announcement otherwise. No recent news in 2012, though.
8. ? Anyone have another ROM for Sensation that's not a variant of or based on one of the above?
9. ?
10. ?
TripNRaver released a beta CM9 over at MoDaCo, fyi.

There are only four "distinct" ICS ROMs available. Trips CM9 leak, the two Virtuous builds, and MAYBE Android Revolution. Everything else is just a themed version of one of the above.
yup still waiting. most ics AOSP roms arent fully stable.

Stable ICS/JB ROMs?

Hey.
I've been on jb roms since they came out for desire s and have been using ics before that. However... ics roms have been in beta stage since ever and have not really advanced in terms of having stable or even working main functions. Well this is because of the fact that our devs did not have kernel sources. There have been words that kernel source release would solve all our major issues like front cam and others. But kernel source has been released and I'm seeing a decline in our forum's traffic and in development. I know i's partly due to many original members leaving. But I also hear that devs are facing difficulty in making the kernel. So I want to ask, will we ever have fully stable ics or jb roms or is this not a possibility?

Sorry for the tone, but this is a pretty pointless thread (IMO) there are already several others in a similar vein that exist and as we don't have a time machine and can't see into the future....although speculation appears to what the majority of threads contains these days....
This is now unfortunately an old device and as you rightly pointed out lots of the forums previous users have moved on to bigger and better new devices so the forum traffic was always bound to fall. We still have several devs that are developing for this device so don't do them a dis-service by suggesting that no progress has been made. Just look at the CM, AKOP and JB source build threads for examples.....
Since the release of the kernel source - progress has certainly been made, just look at the tweaked kernel we can now use, in which we are now able to UV & OC not to mention that the wifi tether issues are now resolved... everything takes time, so be patient....or learn to code yourself and help out!

I fully understand the devs' hard work and their dedications. That's not what this thread is asking. It seems to many devs that they are still having a hard time adjusting ics and jb to our device even upon kernel source release. Despite the prior speculation that things would be much easier with kernel source. So I was bringing the problem forth to see if it is possible for us to have stable ics or jb roms. No need to be all defensive. Just want an objective discussion
Sent from my Desire S using xda app-developers app
custom roms are rearly FULLY stable. there is always a little bug here and there. but since the release of the official ICS and the latest kernel source ICS roms are getting mature at last. and if you're still not satisfied, wait a month more. or flash the official ICS and have a really stable rom now.
JB is another story. there is no native kernel source for it and i doubt there will ever be.
I totally see where you are both coming from. The kernel source was released over a fortnight ago.
I agree with Ben, in respect we should appreciate what the current devs have given us etc etc,
But I also agree with skim, I am quite surprised that with the kernel source released, AOSP still hasn't got a functional kernel based on our Saga build. (Andromadus is using a kernel port)
I was hoping for at least ICS AOSP to be working by now, but I guess that is not the case
The forums have certainly gone a lot quieter now, and I suspect by the end of the year, even more of us will leave
But back to the original point, I wish that things could pick up like they were this time last year, but sadly that will never happen.
I have no intentions of insulting any devs, I truly appreciate the work they have provided us, and I haven't contributed anything particularly useful, so I am in no position to do so, but this is just how I feel.
When I look through forums like the S2, I envy the development... even after a year, ROMs are still on full scale, with so many choices to choose from...

Unfortunately Oly I don't think that you can compare the DS to the SGS2. We unfortunately were never a main stream device (like the SGS2), we sadly missed the boat, with the Sensation coming out shortly after our release, I reckon that the focus went from DHD to Sensation and the limelight never really shone on us long enough to get a main stream following.
The Samsung onslaught appears to unbeatable currently sadly even the One series hasn't really made a dent.
We must all accept the inevitable that our device (Desire S) is by fact outdated with the phase of how fast mobile technology comes. That said, sooner or later, our thread will surely die.
It is with great appreciation that our devs are prolonging the inevitable. Most will surely be having new devices comes these coming months. I too will be leaving the scene as a new device is surely coming at hand in two months time.
Everything in our life changes. One must be oblige to flow with it. If not, one will be left alone and at lost.
P.S.
For an answer for the OP. THERE WILL BE a stable JB/ICS ROM as long as a dev will be willing to still work on it. If not, then THERE WILL BE NOT.
Long answer short: we will never know unless there will be one.
Moral of this post: learn to accept the truth that you have to move on to a new device if you really want to have a stable up-to-date ROM, even past JB.

I think custom roms have advantages, but it's not easy for the devs to make them perfect.
If i compare the stock ROM of x10mini/pro with custom cm6/7 ROM, the stock ROM sucks...

At the moment i'm using stock rom (sense) too, cause my prefered custom rom has still a problem with battery drain...
As soon this is fixed, i'll go to ICS DS again...
But at all, the ICS stock rom is working very nice...
Fallout v4.4.0 is pretty stable to me, been using since a while now.
Tonight i'll try Fallout 5.0, let's see how it is... :highfive:
MIUI 2.8.x or 2.9.x
I recently flashed MIUI 2.8.17 and its been a joyful ride! It is very very stable. I had to reboot only once so far and that is an intermittent bug. BT/WiFi/Tethering/Camera etc. etc. everything works! (hard to find that in an ICS ROM)! Its my daily ROM now.. :good:
Fallout 5.0
I got myself S-off and rooted 2 days ago.
The first custom rom Ive tried is Fallout 5.0. Only one day into my test and it's very stable and fast compared to stock gingerbread.
I'm very pleased with it so far :good:

My Gingerbread stock rom experience made me root my phone. I kept getting the white screen with the green HTC logo and no matter what I did it always came back. I have now tried out about 5 or 6 custom roms and this issue no longer appears. Of course there are other issues, some of which are serious. But there are ROMs which are in general more than good enough for day to day usage. I currently use ICE-DSv5 but for example Fallout v4.4 is stable (v5 is not stable for me but it is for a lot of people).
If you are interested you can look at my other thread here called "My First Rooted Phone" for an overview of my experiences so far.
Blindbean and Codename are great JB roms, not fully stable, but good to work with.
Yes. I flash every recent roms so I know how they are. I started this thread to get an idea of if it is possible to have a stable rom. The devs have been struggling with major bugs since early this year and we're still stuck with the same bugs we had prior to the release of the kernel sources. I do know it is a difficult process. But wanted an answer from a dev. Is it possible for us to have working front cam, proper video playback, etc. ? This isn't complaining btw just wanted an answer other than "be patient. Be thankful. It's good enough"
Sent from my Desire S using xda app-developers app
if you want stable flash rooted stock. it has everything you mentioned. combine it with tweaked kernel and you have even more...

[Q] CyanogenMod 10

so I installed this rom and it's working great. i stil get data drop and my shopkick app not working but the rom is must try. any fix for the app? already tries re-installing it
How about... using gingerbread instead.
If you need an app to work, or your phone to fully work, don't use experimental builds... thought that'd be pretty obvious.
Also, questions belong in.... the questions section.

Isn't "How about.....using gingerbread instead" a question. Wait I just asked a question. Oh no!!!! It's a never ending conundrum. I give up.

No, that wasn't a question, that was a suggestion.
He complains about an app not working while on a build where it's considered beta/alpha so I SUGGESTED to use a ROM that's fully functional such as gingerbread where everything works.
What you posted was pure nonsense and a means just to troll.

For people like myself Gingerbread isn't the best answer. I can't get my work email on a phone running Gingerbread due to security issues. So the better option would be why can't we force the manufactures and carriers to support the phones through the 2 year contract at which we sign. But that's why IF I buy another Android phone it will be a Nexus or I'll go back to Apple as much as I hate Apple users at least I know I'll get my updates to fix security problems.

Yeah that's the only bad thing... this phone is already considered outdated... which sucks because it really isn't.
The best option for this phone is going to be Gingerbread... if you want/need the most stable, which does suck :/.

Exactly. Unfortunately for us, the most Feature-Rich, stable phone with all the working bells and whistles for us is a GB ROM. With the release of the SU660 ICS ROM, I truly believe we'll hit a time in the near future (1-2 months) where we will have a stable, Feature-Rich ICS ROM for the G2X. That will lead to a very nice JB ROM once the devs exercise their brain muscle some (They are good at it, I'm just a wanna-be Dev.)
As it has always been for us, it's a waiting game. I'm confident we'll get there, but it's gonna be a while.
