Decided to make a thread on it since I have two posts floating around that have helped people:
I was once one of the large group that the OTA JH7 Update failed at 50%
However, Today after downloading Kies Mini, I was successfully able to upgrade and remain "stock" JH7 from update without root etc.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
THERE APPEARS THERE MAY BE ISSUES WITH KIES MINI ON 64BIT SYSTEMS - USE A 32 BIT OPERATING SYSTEM
Launcher Pro and Kies Mini may not work well together, if you are updating from a NON-FRESH JF6 you must revert to TouchWiz (Stock) Launcher
1.) Flashed a fresh JF6 ODIN One-Click. (With power off, you can enter download mode by holding both volume buttons and inserting USB once ODIN is open)
2.) Enabled USB Debugging and Ran Master Clear.
3.) Installed Kies-Mini on the PC and let it install the new drivers etc.
4.) Checked phone to be sure it was clear of any additional files on the SD.
5.) Under Settings - Applications - USB Settings - Selected "Ask on connection" (you MAY also need to re-enable USB Debugging, try without it first)
5.) Started Kies-Mini and then plugged in my device selecting "Kies"
6.) Upon device detection it notified me an update was available.
7.) Ran update and I am now Official STOCK JH7 including the new QuickOffice and Media Hub
Proof that it made it to 100%: (This screen shows after download & install - It is verifying the install)
You find a download to the JF6 ODIN One-Click here: (Thanks to DESIGNGEARS)

You can download Kies Mini for the Captivate Here: (Thanks to SAMSUNG)

Special Thanks to Krad for notifying the community that Kies Mini was now available!
Thanks to shawnl01 and ScottyNuttz for discovering that "Enable USB Debugging" may solve a few problems
Thanks to Dxtra for pointing out that Launcher Pro and Kies Mini do not work together

Worked for me. Kies-Mini, not the full Kies. Just "Unmount SD Card" and leave it unmounted. Set USB setting to "Samsung Kies". Uncheck "USB Debugging Mode".
This assuming that you've done Odin3 (JF6 flash and Master Clear) correctly, and cleared user and data cache.

Included, thanks for the notification of the release of Kies mini and making this possible for so many!
A little nit picking, there is no such firmware as JH6. Please update your OP with correct information. The first release firmware is JF6.
You sir are correct, thanks for catching the mistake!
JH7 over Kies Mini
OK, I decided to give this a try. Here is what I did:
1) Flashed back to stock (JF6);
2) Cleared cache & user data;
3) Formatted SD card;
4) Connected to PC and Kies picked it up and quickly indicated update of JH7 was available;
5) Kies updated - it took about 15 minutes to download and install.
The first think I did was test the GPS and it locked indoors in less than 10 seconds. I did not have WiFi or "Use wireless networks" on. It gave 10 meters accuracy within about 20 seconds.
I also noticed the media scanning was very fast and there seems to be very little lag. All-in-all, so far, I think this is a good update. I will post again after I've tested the GPS out and about and a week or so of use to see if the lag remains minimal.
This whole update ordeal is sorta tickin' me off.
For whatever reason, I have not been able to install OTA. "Update is failed." message appears every time.
Attempted update last night with standard UK Kies. Said no upgrade was available.
Just attempted Kies mini and every time the phone is plugged into the computer is causes the application to throw an "Application has stopped working" error under Windows 7.
Phone shows JF7. CSC and PDA show JF6.
What... the... hell!
I am also on Windows 7 and had no issue, did you try using the software provided above? Also, did you remove the other version of KIES and follow step by step?
Also maybe try using a different USB port, and run the application in compatibility mode

Yes. Software provided above. Removed all traces of previous Kies. Attempted in XP compatibility mode. Ran with Administrator privileges. All of it.
Still nada.
Guess it's on to Odin, reflash stock JF6 and start fresh.
Anyone have any ideas about the unregistered I get on kies mini? My phone is registered with samsung if thats what it means.
When I was on Cognition etc, I was still able to connect my device to Kies Mini just not update it.
Try this:
On your device, make USB connection to Kies as default by going to [Settings] > [About phone] > [USB settings].
Then unmount both of your SD Cards, Internal and External.
Go where your installed Kies. For example:" C:\Program Files\Samsung\KiesMini" look for AMiniLauncher and start it
Then try to connect your device.
Now im getting a "failed to connect to the model information server" Anyone else experience this?
EDIT: Seems to only happen when in USB debugging mode. When I switch out USB debugging I get the unregistered error.

This is true, I didn't make note of that because the instructions assume that they are starting by flashing a fresh JF6 through ODIN.
But If they make the attempt from a non fresh install that would be a very good point. - added to the instructions! Thank you!

Make sure you are using Kies USB mode and has TouchWiz as your default launcher and you're on your home screen when you connected your USB cable. All three must be met and if you're doing right, your phone will show MTP Application screen.

Two problems in one email... Let me say ahead of time I appreciate any help and have looked for solutions before posting
1) Captivate always gives error contacting AT&T server when trying to check for firmware update. I am still on a stock phone with no root. I was able to use this function to upgrade from whatever the phone had when shipped to JH7. Since then always get this error.. Help would be appreciated.
2) Kies program connection. Because I could not check for firmware updates I decided to try Kies. I can not connect except for when I choose Mass Storage mode on my phone's usb and then the Kies software says to choose PC Studio mode. Only Kies mode on my phone is Firmware Update mode. Help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Steve
Try using Kies Mini instead of that version, Mini is just for firmware upgrading.
Also when you use it set your phone to usb debugging mode and ask on connection in the application settings.
Jh7 its the latest update. There's no new froyo out yet.

Thanks for the replies..
I did the debug usb and Kies told me it can not connect to a device with usb debugging on .. again told me to turn on Kies (PC Studio) but I don't have that option on my phone...
Uninstall your Kies software, if your wanting to update to JF7 from JH6
you install this software (Kies Mini- for firmware upgrades only)
Google "Kies mini Samsung captivate".
Click the first link.
i'd post a link but im not permitted to considering I only have 1 post.
MAKE sure you have settings>applications>usb settings>ask on connection
AND
settings>applications>developement>USB debugging enabled.
1) I had this same problem after the JH7 update via OTA. I used the "Software Update" selection and got the proper update. Phone said it updated correctly. After that, whenever I tried to check for update again, it failed to connect to the server. I had some other issues as well (not being able to add a google account). I took it to AT&T but they didnt know how to fix it. I ended up flashing back to stock using odin-one-click and updated it again to JH7. After that, everything worked ok. Seems like during your update, something didnt install right although it told you it did.
2) Make sure you are in the TouchWiz launcher and not any other launchers like LauncherPro. Also, make sure you are on the home screen of the TouchWiz. The only way I can get Kies to recognize my phone is to change the USB settings to Kies (not Ask on connection). 1.5.3.10093_82 is the version of Kies I am using. If you update it to the latest version (1.5.4.10093_100), then it will no longer recognize the samsung captivate at all.
i finally got my captivate to connect to kies mini using the .dll patch from another post and then moved back to the TwLauncher and selected Kies(firmware upgrade).
now its telling me in kies that it can not connect to the model information server
if i cant connect to kies then how will i ever be able to update to froyo?
help will be appreciated.

Don't panic. That happens alot probably because people are slamming the servers looking for an update. Try it on an off time and see if it connects.
Hi,
I have Canadian (Rogers) version of Captivate i896.
When I first got it, there was no problem connecting it to Kies.
Now that I am trying to upgrade the firmware to 2.2, Kies won't recognize my phone.
After I plug in the USB, and select Kies mode (Firmware upgrade) on the phone when prompted, nothing happens. No error message, nothing either on the phone or on Kies.
Connecting it as Mass storage device works fine. Kies then recognizes it but tells me to choose Kies mode, not mass storage.
I have upgraded Kies to the latest version (1.5.3.10113_29).
My Captivate is rooted and is running ADW as default launcher.
Any help please?
Thank you.

Tried to find the answer in other posts, but it isn't easy to read through all threads, pages.
I find the search function not so easy to use.
I have tried completely uninstalling & reinstalling Kies.
I have tried Driver Recovery.
I am using the main USB port (directly off the motherboard).
Still no response from Kies or the phone at all.

have Windows 7 Ultimate and Hard time Kies Recognizing my Phone. I used the same method which used to fix an iPhone Issue ages back
1) Download Your Uninstaller 2010 ( Free trial ) and removed currently installed KIES - it removes it plus cleans up form the registry
2) Download everything from http://www.voidtools.com/ - it's like an interactive search and picks everything in your PC. Search for Samsung and Kies, delete all files and folders which say Samsung and Kies
3) Reboot PC
4) Install Canadian Kies Ver http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/de...ub_class_cd=P#
5) Open Kies (You have to be in TW Launcher, not LauncherPro or other for Kies to detect the phone and do a firmware update)
6) Plug in your phone with Kies firmware update On (in Settings/Application/usb settings)
7) Select Firmware Update in Kies
8) Click the Update button
9) Wait for the download to finish then you will see another Windows POP up, DONT PRESS OK
10) Disconnect USB | Power OFF Phone
11) Power Phone ON with VOL Buttons ON, it will come to Downloading... Download mode (Black/yellow screen with a shovelling droid)
12) Connect USB after 5 seconds
13) Press OK on Kies so it pushed the update to the phone
14) Kies will say Update Completed and your phone should be sitting on Galaxy S, diconnect cable and you enter Froyo

TouchWiz - the default launcher that comes with the Captivate. Some people install a different launcher (like LauncherPro), which can prevent Kies from connecting to your phone.
I couldn't get Kies to recognize my Captivate either. The trick was to format the internal SD card. After that Kies found the phone, informed me of the 2.2 update.

I have an Indian Atrix 2 running the official OTA ICS 4.0.4
I haven't rooted the phone before it updated and was trying to do it now using the files and instructions from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742879
I've done all the basics:
-Checked that USB Debugging was on
-Checked that Unknown Application Sources were allowed
-Made sure I had the latest drivers
However the root batch file only says that the "daemon started successfully" but nothing happens after...
I've attached a couple of screenshots
Also I noticed that after connecting my phone to the computer and running the command 'adb devices' my phone doesn't show up in the devices list, this probably has something to do with it, but I don't know what or how to rectify it.
Try different cable or computer usb port.
I've yet to successfully root mine as will but i would also suggest running as administrator
Sent from my MB865 using Tapatalk 2
tried both suggestions, unfortunately to no avail.
How about reinstalling adb??
If nothing works i would suggest doing a factory reset and trying again.

I rooted it using the attached RazrRoot file. I saw it somewhere on XDA but I am unable to find that thread. So I am uploading it again.

check your connection mode
When you connect the phone using the USB cable, what mode is activated? Try selecting mass storage mode and then run the root script. (Other modes like MTP etc won't work I think)
Also try reinstalling the drivers before trying this out.
Doesnt work

download the razr root file and try again, maybe some problem with the download. im sorry cant help you with anything else.. maybe a hard reset should do it.
try following this again,
download the moto driver
Moto Drivers
download the razr root from here again, this is the one i used
Razr root 4.0.4
Connect phone in MTP mode
USB debugging enabled
Right click on the root.bat file and Run as administrator..
This is how ive rooted, twice, and also one of my friend.. the difference is that im on the latest leak, 672.1.18.en.03 ( but thisis also the OTA for AsiaRetail MB865) So this Should probably work.. If not maybe research some more and if nothing helps maybe a hard reset is your last option..
See if this helps
Firstly I don't know since you already attempted a root method which didn't work out yet how & up to what extent it alters your phone though not rooted. If your phone is working I feel the first step now would be for you to do a factory reset assuming you are on ICS OTA (OTA remember & nothing else) & I am repeating one of my post for what's it worth to you cause it was successful for me, so here it is :
Here's what I did :
1) Installed the latest USB drivers (in my case Motocast) from Moto site.
2) As a double check executed the Motorola Device Manager program (basically the USB drivers) again from the Moto site (which gives option of repair or uninstall & I selected repair since I initiated the install process) atop the prior installation of the Motocast.
3) Cold boot the computer (shutdown & then restart & not just restart {being paranoid })
4) On phone ensure screen timeout to never, screen always on while charging, usb debug on, allow non market apps install check then plug in to back port and when the Moto USB transfer GUI pops up, right click the icon @ system tray & check do nothing when phone is plugged in. Unplug phone
5) Once again cold restart phone & computer
6) After phone restarts killed all google processes manually, disabled anti virus, vpn's & other non critical apps
6) Once rebooted both devices, selected MTP mode, plug in phone & click on Jim's root file
7) Root - Cut thru like hot knife thru butter
One most important point was since I was absolutely bone stock I did not do factory reset before plugging in phone and in case if any kind of tinkering has been done ensure factory reset to make sure you go absolutely bone stock & then follow above steps. Hope this helps.
Post your final update. Good Luck!
I don't think this has been covered as I have googled till my fingers bled and checked various XDA threads.
I was using the Kingdroid method of updating the bootloader to make it ready for 4.4 TW ROMs as well as Mobile ODIN. I got to the stage of flashing the official 4.4 ROM and I asked for it to boot into ODIN mode so I could do the Bootloader update as well. The only problem is that my laptop seems to not want to recognise my phone as a USB device and I can't take it any further.
I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I couldn't think of anywhere else to put it since I don't know who could help with a solution.
The phone will only go into ODIN mode, hang at the Galaxy Note 3 screen or hang as it tries to reboot into a recovery.
I had made sure all the device drivers/USB drivers were up to date and installed before doing this. I have Windows 8.1 if that matters at all.
Thanks in advance guys,
Paul

Right click on Odin > Properties and choose Compatibility then run it in Either windows 8 or Windows 7
And uninstall KIES as KIES and Odin don't mix well.
Reboot your lappy and job is done :good:
EDIT: PS - flash total stock 4.4.2 then use a custom ROM as flashing just the BL causes issues.

Try a different Port or even USB cable, USB 3.0 can be iffy sometimes, if that's a no-go try another computer if you can.

Cheers fella, I'll give it a crack. My version is Odin3 v3.09. I've looked into the system closer and instead of my device being listed as Samsung it is listed as the Snapdragon 800 processor number and then I have base system device and 8 unknown devices in the same list.
When I right click on the properties it says that the device is not configured correctly, I choose to update the driver and it downloads one only to fail at the install point saying data invalid.

Maybe you need the right usb driver for your phone to be recognized or a adb usb driver perhaps? When the phone is in download mode, windows often list the name differently.

Try a different Port or even USB cable, USB 3.0 can be iffy sometimes, if that's a no-go try another computer if you can.
EDIT: Try a different version of Odin also if you can, 1.85 is a winner everytime, what version you currently using?
EDIT2: Attached 1.85 for you

Tried a few USB leads and all 3 ports on my laptop but it was a no go. Used v.1.85 as well. The only thing left to do I guess is to try another PC or laptop and keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks Joe.
I've tried to install adb but the part that features the drivers fails to install. When I have the Note 3 plugged in I can get to the point that goes to update the drivers but fails to install with a message that the data was invalid.
I had been running 4.4 AOSP on it and my Nexus 7 1G but now it's both that aren't recognised as a USB storage device.
My head is battered now and it looks like the only hope I have of rescuing my phone is if it works on another PC. This is a long shot at this point I think.

I'm feeling your pain Paul, I'd be devastated if that happened to beautiful note 3. Fingers crossed for you.

Definitely try another PC and I think it will work

I have my fingers and toes crossed, gingerdude.
Elhamy, that's my only hope I think. I don't understand what the hell what has happened but I'll have to go the Odin route since that's all I can really get it into. If I run Odin3 on another laptop with the phone plugged in and it isn't recognised, it's getting put through the wall as it's no use to me at that point. I will try to reinstall the drivers through Kies first though, just hope it would still work even though it will be in Odin mode.

Looking to go back to stock using this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591601
Odin will recognize my phone when booted normaly but, when in download mode odin wont recognize my phone
I have CWM recovery 6.0.3.8 installed if it makes any difference.
Any help is appriciated, thanks
Are the drivers installed? This is usually the problem. If that is not the problem, it may be the USB Port or the USB Cable. Switching ports usually helps.

Unfortunately, i have tried both of those things. I have uninstalled and reinstalled samsung drivers from both kies and the samsung website. I have also tried switching ports with no avail. I have found out when i connect my phone in download mode in one port there will be a sound as if a device is connected but i cannot see the phone on my computer, on all other ports it will sound as if the device connected and then disconnected immediately. I have also tried using multiple versions of odin.

Yes! You hear the sound of the phone being connected. Have you checked any processes on your computer when that happens? Download Mode needs certain drivers (downloaded automatically) to be able to work with Odin.

Unfortunately, no other processes appear on my computer when connected. Would there be a way i could download the download mode drivers manually?

And uninstall kies from your computer. There is nothing useful about that app.

The 1st installation method did not work, so i went on to the the 3rd however when i look on device manager my phone is listed as an Android Device>Google Galaxy Nexus ABD Interface, when i try doing step 8 my computer says the drivers are already up to date. Going on details for the driver says its from ClockworkMod(my current recovery). Might this be why Odin cannot detect my device when in download mode? And if so how would i go about fixing this? Thanks for your help by the way

Hmmm. Another option could be just flashing to stock rather than using Odin. May I ask why you want to go back to stock? Are you returning your phone? If so, flashing a stock ROM should suffice..

Well yes, im soon going to be getting a new phone in May(any suggestions?? lol). However, since flashing Cyanogen Mod 10 i have had trouble getting calls. I cannot hear when the phone is dialing and if someone picks up on the other end i dont hear anything. Also, recently texts have not been working. I have seen that I am able to send texts but not recieve them, or if i do they will take a LONG time to come through and usually i will get all the messages at once.
