Just got a Text From ATT about available update - Captivate General

I wonder if it's a new update or the OTA that failed for everyone? I have Cognition 2.1.1 installed so I probably won't be trying it out until it's been dissected.

I got like 10 of them within few hours , wtf ATT if its not Froyo i don't want any.

If you haven't updated to JH7 then that is what it is. Don't hold your breath for Froyo!

do updates count against your data plan?

Sadly, Yup =(

Is this the same update that's been out for a week (and bricking phones) or something different?

I was in my local AT&T Corporate store yesterday and they told me that all OTA updates will show up on the bill as free of charge. I am on the 200mb plan, they advised me that if for some reason I get billed for updates to bring in my bill and they will credit it back.

BB Unlimited Data Plan to Captivate? Still unlimited?

Ahh, nice to be back on XDA... I was a former poster when I used to own the HTC Tilt and the older version of it, then I switch to Blackberry Bold. And now switching to Android and what better way to look for info about rooting but right here on XDA. Well to my question, I get different responses from ATT reps saying I can grandfather the unlim. and some says it has to be from BB to BB for it to be grandfathered. Question is which one is true? Really want this phone and would very much like to keep the unlim. data.

Trust me you will be able to keep you unlimited data plan. In the system when they upgrade you they have the option to select unlimited PDA plan. Just make sure they keep it for you.
Anytime you go from Smartphone to smartphone with AT&T you still will be able to keep your unlimited data plan.
Would it still be grandfathered if you bought it off contract?
I just sold my bold 9700 and this will be my first android phone. I called in to the att rep to unregister my blackberry pin from the bis service and was told I should be grandfathered because I'm going from one unlimited data to another unlimited data. I will be also buying this at full price.

You will be fine. I have switched my unlimited data from iPhone to Blackberry to nothing and back various times and have not had any problems doing so. I am lucky to have been grandfathered in. 200mb just seems like a limit and I do not like it.
just make absolutely certain and have the rep read your plan back to you after the swap to make sure he swapped ur bb unlimited to a reg unlimited.
Thanks guys. I'll update you once I made the switch.
I read somewhere a person may NOT be grandfathered in if they purchase from other than AT&T. Anyone know if that is true?

This is not true because either way you have the option to simply renew your current plan with AT&T (if you purchase a phone elsewhere) and then change your data plan to android (which will be unlimited assuming you are grandfathered in).
Now if you mean purchasing the phone from lets say Radio Shack under an AT&T contract you will still get the same benefits if you purchased from an AT&T store.
I checked multiple AT&T store today and spoke with the manager(s). Yes, if you have been grandfathered into unlimited data, this carries over to ANY future cell phone as long as you stay with AT&T. Samsung Captivate included.
They said that you would have the option of downgrading to a 2gb max WITH tethering (they weren't sure if the captivate supported it yet but obviously the iphone does). This isn't an issue though because the damn thing will be rooted and I'll tether with it without their knowledge.

They said they going to leave my blackberry data plan on there until I make the switch. When I actually have the phone in my hands I just give them a call to switch over to another unlimited data plan.

Not true, as long as they remain your carrier, they don't care where your phone came from.
I'm also coming from the tilt, then fuze, then had a bb 9700 for awhile, and now getting the captivate I am in iraq though and my service has been suspended, they just re-did all my stuff over the phone and I told the lady I had an unlimited plan for itnernet, and she read it back as unlimited to me. If I hit limits (I tether my phones ALOT usually) then I will call and demand it be fixed, or ATT loses my contract for breaching it.

i rescind my comment. I've done further research into the matter and lots of controversy surrounds ATT & their 5 gb limit. I won't open that can of worms here. Just be careful, if u go over 5 gb and tether w/o a tether plan. bad things may or may not happen.

When I got my iP4 coming from a BB, i was able to keep my unlimited, now that im prolly going to be returning the iP4 i hope they should be able to keep my UNL.

Even if the phone is purchased from a another AT&T retailer you will be fine.
Also there is no cap the unlimited data plan.

Guess AT&T doesn't throttle down data like T-mobile

Checked it this morning just to see what I was at. 16k, 18k afternoon, now 21k mb with six hours left in the day. All the moaning about the death star, I stay with em for a reason.

Not throttled because you grandfathered in the Unlimited Data plan before they capped it a few months ago. Next time you re-up you will probably be forced to sign a limited data plan contract

Flashman is correct. Plus throttling refers to bumping someone down to a slower network like 2g. Tmo has a 5 gig cap on unlimited before they slow you down.

There are people on hear that still have the $15 unlimited data. It's in the contract, all you are doing is renewing the contract. Extending it. I was hitting 10 gb on my razr2 feature phone way back when I first signed up. Got a fuze and had to switch to smartphone unlimited. On the fuze, I averaged about 40 gigs. Only way it's changing is if they charge for 4g like sprint. Which I'll gladly do.

FYI - Upgrading to Android/Sensation from HD2

I received my Sensation yesterday and found that the data wasn't working. There is a $10 charge per month charge for 4g going from an HD2 to a Sensation.
What was your previous plan?
I did not have to do this. I came from HD2 with android on it. They said: "oh cool we prefer the HD2 like that too. So you have android already." Me: "aha I do."

if you already had a "data plan" there is no extra charge... just call and make sure they add the "android" service which is free...
you'll need to change to an android approved plan. tmobile has probably already flagged your IMEI to not work. you can test this by putting your SIM card in your HD2 & seeing if that works. If it does on the HD2 & not on the Sensation then the IMEI is blocked.
Every other person on this forum who was running a grandfathered data plan has had to "upgrade" as well.

I don't know if it's an american thing, but it's scanadlous to charge more for the same data just because of your operating system. i'm glad so far i've not had a contract that specifies what phone can use what data. (without trying to start a flamewar) I think the only time i've ever seen that happen here is when iphone came out and everyone had specific iphone plans as all of a sudden the networks thought everyone was only then going to start using internet on their phones.

I also came from a Hd2 my data stopped working I called 4 times and was told my Total web data plan would work. Finally I got a CSR who said I would need a Android plan and I would need to pay $5 more I demanded a supervisor 5mins later CSR came back told me they switched me to Android plan and kept the price the same. Moral of the story don't take there crap and demand the android plan with no price change .
I think it's safe to assume that tmobile will catch most if not all people that are on non android plans with this phone & force them to change over
I came from HD2 as well. You will get data at HSPA not HSPA+ until you either upgrade or they block your imei.

I also came from an HD2 and had to switch plans. I still pay the same $24.99, but learned it has a 2GB cap instead of the 5GB cap. But, I may switch to the $30 plan if needed and the $5 wouldn't kill me.
Yeah, I had an unlimited BlackBerry plan and I was forced to switch over to the 5 GB Android plan for the internet to work. Oh well.
Any tips?
I'm migrating from an HD2 (running Android) to a Sensation. Any tips on swapping data? I know I can do contacts and such through Google Sync, but what do you think is the best way to switch over photos and text messages?
Any tips would be appreciated..
Thanks much.

T-mobile data blocked after renewing monthly data plan

Did anyone else get this recently? I renewed my plan and today my data was blocked... I was redirected to the T-mobile upsell page saying that I do not have a data plan but I jsut renewed the $30 prepaid plan with 5GB of 4G Data and 100 Mins. I noticed that this happened to several people during November-December.
I called their tech supported and they didn't really provide me with a solution so they escalated the problem.
A few people got their issue resolved but never posted an actual solution so I am guessing that there is some glitch in their system...

interesting.. for me, when i renewed my plan, the data was supposed to be set back to 0GB but it still showing the data usage from last month (~2GB). If the tech support does call me back tomorrow I will ask them to cancel my data plan (or entire plan) and reinstate it.
another weird thing is that since I renewed my plan, my funds stayed the same. I had ~$34 a few days ago so I added a $100 prepaid card to my account last night. it should have deducted $30 today but it's still showing ~$134 in my account

That's not true. There's a fairly well-known loophole of using alternate upgrades to keep unlimited data and extend your contract. I've successfully done it three times now. The last time was in April when I got my M8. I have unlimited data and my contract expiration date is 04/07/2016. :good:

Technically, according to the conditions of the list, we should be fine. One of the conditions is "Have fulfilled their minimum contract term". This is Big Red we're talking about here, though, so you never know. I hope T-Mobile steps up their coverage game in my area soon. I'm sure they will welcome me with open arms when Big Red forces me to get rid of my old voice plan and unlimited data.

Switch to T-Mobile
I'm switching to T-Mobile soon - I tether a lot so having unlimited is nice and there is more development for T-Mobile/AT&T editions. I would get throttled with unlimited on both networks so why not pay less?
Better reception more reliable network... More coverage. For me I travel so its nice to know I have data and my kids are able to tether for games and videos. Just my 2ยข often worth less to others lol.
The OP left out one important little detail: Only the top 5% of data hogs get throttled. Those that use more than 4.7GB/month.

Can anyone confirm the state of Verizon HTC One M8s that have switched to TMobile?
I assume by "everything" they literally mean, everything--calls, WiFi, 4G--or does the 4G only apply to "refarmed" areas? I already have S-OFF via Firewater so I'd assume the tough part's done...

No such thing as a data hog, data WANTS to be transferred, that is the whole point of a network. If Verizon's network can't handle the network demands of their customers, they should upgrade their network, not throttle their customers. They make billions of dollars for pete's sake.
I travel 50% of the year for work, and hotel "high-speed" internet is rarely fast enough for VPN, screen sharing, downloading ISOs, etc. My phone is the only way I can get enough bandwidth on the road to do my job, and I can easily use 50-70GB/month. I do not consider this to be outlandish - files get bigger every day, data demands grow every day, and network speed and capacity must keep up with this trend. Land-line ISPs have no problem with this, Verizon is just greedy.
I use about the same 50 to 70 gigs a month. But I've upgraded so I'll be fine. I also live in the booneys, but we got 4g last year and I haven't noticed any throttling here. Good luck to others!

I just bought the M8 on contract during their mother's day promo and kept my unlimited data. Just transfer your plan from your old phone (2 year contract fulfilled) to the new one.
Unfortunately you cannot rely on what the sals reps tell you. They told me I had to give up mu unlimited data, but I would get 5 GB/month instead of the standard 2 GB. After they'd done the switch I was still unlimited....
Yeah have multiple lines. Just transfered my upgrade, used it and my contract is resumed for another 2 years.
