[Review] Astronomy Apps - Android Apps and Games

I picked a few cool apps related to Astronomy on Android Market. This is what caught my attention: it had either a very good app design and graphics or innovative concept\features. I skipped Google Sky for now, I think everybody heard about it already.
Here is my list, so far it includes four apps:
AstroClock
The heart of this app is a smart widget: it shows you the position of the sun in a day, current moon phase and the season of the year. The author managed to put all of this info in a widget without any numbers. Design and graphics? You can compare it yourself with other apps.

Deluxe Moon
It is what it says: you will enjoy moon phases with all kind of bells and whistles: a widget, moon phase calendar, Zodiac circles, next moon phase dates, moon timers and its azimuth etc. Packed with features and great graphics, it is a good fusion of technology and style.

TerraTime
The main feature of this app is a clock that shows you day and night on the dial. Essentially you will see rise & set times for the sun & moon. I liked the concept, though it is somewhat idelogically similar to AstroClock.

Celeste SE
This is an augmented reality app: aim your device and see planets superimposed on your camera view. Celeste (Italian for SkyBlue, I don’t know what SE stands for) has been on the market for a while, neveretheless it is still a good app with a well designed concept.

Thanks! Any particular app topics? I was thinking about something like "N cool looking apps" review...

Any Astro apps that aren't just about sun/moon rise/set? I'd love to see some that let you predict/observe eclipses from different locations, see the position of the stars/moon/sun at any given day/time, etc..
I've never yet found another program like Skyglobe I had on my old DOS palmtop years ago.. You could see just about anything on it.. Most apps today are just pretty pictures of the moon. For example you could set it to track the moon and step through time and observe an eclipse...
Something I do in real life with this sort of thing is photography, if I have someone wanting some pictures taken at sunset it's handy not just to know when sunset is but when the sun is setting, at what angle etc, and what my timeline is. Example if someone tells me today that they want some of their wedding portraits with a sunset in Februrary of next year, I'd like to be able to look up when I should start, when they would be over, etc.. Handy to have this in a portable format.

Google Sky Map is out there for free. It's a nice and simple augmented reality app that shows you stars, constellations and planets. Point your phone at the sky (or the ground!) and it uses the compass and g-sensor in your phone to show a labeled version of the sky you see.
Never mind. Just saw the small mention in the first post.

I'll try it, don't think I've seen that one before. The new version of Google Sky is a little better in that you can set the time you're seeing, but it's still not all that easy to visualize eclipse etc...
And has anyone found a program that will help you find satellites, similar to how Google Sky does things? I still keep hoping Google Sky adds some major ones like ISS or other visibles..
Can't wait to see the version of Google Sky that shows the Halley Comet.

Which are the best Astronomy apps for Android?

[Live Wallpaper] Doom Live Wallpaper

I was inspired by the Mario live wallpaper on these forums to make something similar using the Doom sprites. I released it as a beta last week and have been constantly updating it as often as I can.
Features:
- Tapping the screen will drop a random powerup after a 5 second countdown (can be disabled in options)
- Powerups are: Medikit, Armor, Shotgun, Chaingun, Rocket Launcher, Plasma Rifle, BFG 9000
- Dragging and dropping one of your homescreen icons will spawn a random demon for the doomguy to fight (can be disabled in options)
- Enemies spawn in pre-programmed waves starting off with a small number of easy enemies and building up to large numbers of tougher demons
- Waves can be completely randomized in the options
- Maximum monsters in the random waves is adjustable from 1-25 (setting to 1 means always single monster in each wave, setting to 25 means random number of monsters between 1 and 25 will spawn)
- Adjustable animation speed and sprite size
- Statistics screen in the settings that shows number of kills, number of deaths and number of powerups collected by the doomguy
- 4 different image backgrounds will cycle. Options allow to choose your favourite and not show the others, or disable backgrounds completely which can improve performance and reduce battery drain.
- Create a sequence of custom backgrounds from images in your gallery.
- Currently features the following characters
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

- Game mode allows you to "play" the wallpaper full screen with visible health and armor and high scores.
The response has been very positive so far, it was even mentioned on the xda-developers blog, pocketnow.com and engadget.
It's free, but does contain an admob ad in the settings (same as mario live wallpaper). - This is why it requires internet permission.
I'm loving it. Great job man.
Absolutely fun to watch.
Perhaps deaths/max kills per life/current kills counter would be fun

Yeah I've been thinking about adding a sort of game mode where you have more control over his movements and you can see his health + ammo. But I don't have much time to spend developing it at the moment.
I'm currently working on improving the AI so the monsters can fight each other like they do in the original Doom.
Awesome! Thanks for your work!
Awesome even on slow processors (msm7xxx)
u rule man !!
Nice 1 Thanks
Sweet, keep updating please
Sick! I hate using live wallpapers because of battery usage but I love Doom so much this is well worth it
Soo awesome!
it is possible to add a settings to keep on one 'screen'.
i hate it when i can't see him shooting imps when i'm on a different screen
nube question
Hey I'm new to the Droid experience. What do you mean by scan the barcode? Is there an app for doing that?
Thanks.

Barcode scanner in the market or if you appbrain
Good job, working well on my SGS, would be nice if you could choose an image from your gallery for the background.
Sh!t dude, love it!
AI for a wallpaper hehehe, what's the world coming too
This is really good thanks.
Just wondering though, that a boot animation like this with the android robot instead of the marine would be interesting. Anyone seen anything like that anywhere?
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
The only thing I can really think of is adding the BFG (along with the ability to switch doomguys weapons), more enemies, and definitely the ability to choose which color doomguy you want.
Looks great and all but why does it note that it needs "Network Communication" under the "Permissions"?

[APP][2.3+][V3.7.2] LocationDetector

Important: the application can work without Internet connection!
LocationDetector is full suite for travelers, fishermen and mushroom pickers! It is direct GPS Navigator to saved places.
Use navigation arrow to find the saved location you have forgot.
Use compass to get directions of North, West etc.
Send locations via sms, see all locations on map etc....
Now you can do all of these things with the only one application - LocationDetector !!!
In advanced version you have additional features like adding locations from google map or enter it numeric values, weather conditions etc.!
Also there is no advertisement in Advanced Location Detector!
Thanks for using it!

It is not a nice, enjoyable experience. The design is just outdated. Making a good app is not all. The second part is a good UI, pay attention to details, then the users will be more into using it. Take a look at HRS Hotel Search app. Their app was so badly designed (Gingerbread UI elements, wrong spacing, etc.) that they had to redesign it and after they have done that, they had to start over, with new app package name, new design (finally Holo, looks gorgeous) because of the bad ratings at Play Store. There is an official Android App Design community at Google+ that you may want to check out, with Roman Nurik (Muzei, DashClock) being the one of the moderators
If other developers would make app designs still based on Gingerbread, completely ignoring design guidelines, there would in the future be no material design, uncomplete Android L (because of those outdated apps) and Android platform would loose on popularity (no high-end games, cool apps, etc., you get the idea...).
However, from the screenshots it looks like if you just swap Theme.Light for Theme.Holo.Light.DarkActionBar, for example, and then spent just a few hours making your app look against the design guidelines, trust me, it would be at a totally different level. Good luck

Thanks a lot for your advices! Actually I'm going to redesign the app in the future, and now I think that I have to do it ASAP
Anyway, application is very helpful if you like to travel, and emphasis was made for functionality. I hope you will enjoy it anyway even with current design.
May be someone has idea about functionality of this app? Is everything suitable for you?

Your game is great! I love the beautiful pixel style The idea is simple and fun, difficulty is very high. Only suggestion: at the moment, only the vulcano in the background is animated. Maybe you can also put some life (birds etc.) in the forrest + sky?

A little sneak peek for the upcoming Tapazoic: Winter Edition
New version is now available - v1.2.0:
- You will notice difference in the forest.
- The background has more details, like a fenix flying around and lava burping down the mountain.
- Gameplay is also a little bit different, it is more easier on the start, collision detection is improved and minor bugs are gone.
I would love to hear your feedback for this version!

I'm collecting votes from the community, so please help me decide which outfit looks better!
4 is best imho
Winter is here!
Are you cold? Not yet?
Don't fret, you'll start dressed up, so you won't get cold from ice and those pesky snowballs. You can change your outfit at any time, in the menu under the trousers icon. Now you're able to choose from 10 different outfits, but you will have to unlock them first. Try to unlock something warm, something "boss", like a woolly mammoth skin! Don't like Ice Age weather conditions? No worries, you can still play in the summertime, just pick one of the available trousers to change the season.
New update is available!
It brings reskinned summer outfits and other improvements...
Check them out!
Many things have changed since I last wrote. In the latest update you'll notice more detailed cliffs and grounds for summer and winter theme.
Feel free to check the newest version on Google Play: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goranhorvat.tapazoic
From the idea of a caveman trying to save himself from an erupting volcano to the accomplished pixel art.
For staying up to date feel free to follow FB page: https://www.facebook.com/tapazoic
Happy Easter holiday
Enjoy it with lovely Easter bunny in this new update!

[INDEX][APPs][Material Design]List of Apps with Material Design.

Hey, Welcome to the thread which contains some apps rha have material design.
First i want say that this thread doesn't contain any Google Apps(Gapps).
So Lets go
1.Action Launcher 3 Here
Sure, there’s the Google Now Launcher if you want the Googliest home screen possible, but Action Launcher gives your phone or tablet a Nexus-style look with more customization. There are plenty of icon pack choices and the QuickPage, which is a custom home screen you can get by swiping in from the right edge.

}
2.Cabinet Beta Here
It’s had a long go in beta, but Cabinet is a pretty stable and desirable file manager with a slick, material design look. It uses the floating button well, letting you create a new remote connection, folder, or file.
3.Swift keyboard Here
SwiftKey has gone all-in on with themes, with choices ranging from the minimalist to the ridiculous (Frozen, anyone?). On the material design, front, however, there are two excellent keyboard choices that match the new design of Google’s keyboard but add in more functionality. They’re $0.99 each, but well worth it.
4.Field Trip Here
Field Trip is a clever app for when you’re traveling or just out and about and want to discover more about what’s around you. It will ping you with details about restaurants, sites of historical snippets, or other places that you wouldn’t normally pick up through just a Google search or perusal of Yelp.
5.WEATHER TIMELINE Here
It’s too rare to find a great “Android only” app that shows off the best of the platform. Weather Timeline has done this with its weather application. It also has excellent Android Wear implementation, pushing out weather alerts and putting the forecast on your watch. It’s only $0.99, so grab it and support great development efforts like this.
6.NUMIX CALCULATOR Here
The stock Android calculator does the job, and it too has a new material theme if you’re running Lollipop. But if you want something that looks great and has a few more features then go with Numix Calculator Pro. It saves your calculation’s history and swings in with additional capabilities when you swipe through the keyboard.
[/SIZE]
7.Source News Reader Here
Feedly is still undergoing a material redesign, so while you’re waiting, or if you just want to explore another alternative, check out Source News Reader.
8.LUMIFIC-Pic Gallery Here
Lumific is a beautiful photo gallery application for anyone that isn’t happy with the stock photo gallery app that comes preinstalled on their device. While there are many great features within Lumific, one notable feature is the ability to order photo prints from Lumific through Snapfish by HP. Now you can have any photo taken with your camera printed out to keep and to share. Lumific also takes similar photos and recreates them into GIF images automatically, and it now integrates with Dropbox to sync photos for backup.
9.PLAYER FM PODCAST Here
Podcasts are a great way to consume the content you love if you don’t have the ability to read it, and Player FM Podcast adds in loads of useful features for anyone looking to start listening to podcasts. To start, it’s cloud-based, which means you can listen to it across devices. It’s also equipped for offline playback so you can still listen to stuff even without a data connection. You’ll also never have to worry about not being able to listen to an entire podcast all the way through, since play history will let you resume from where you left off.
10.NOVA LAUNCGER BETA Here
Nova Launcher Betas include new features and fixes before they are released to all users. However they also are not as well tested and may not be as reliable. Betas are best for people who don't mind when things temporarily break a little bit.
11.WHATSAPP (MD)(OFFICIAL)(BETA) Here
If you've been waiting for that special day when messaging app WhatsApp could be updated with the Material Design of Android 5.0, the good news is that day is here. You won't find this update in the Google Play Store yet, no matter how hard you try.
great! thanks

Yes, exactly. This is a special system of Luxy to make sure the users base are either wealthy or attractive which has been extensively featured by CNN, BBC, Business Insider, CNBC, ABC, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, to name a few. Jimmy Kimmel.
To boost your chance to get in, you are highly suggested to upload beautiful and good-looking pictures for vouch.
This vouch-in idea is not bad! However, why don't you let all new users can view the Lookbook people before “voted-in”? It seems you can do nothing in the first 24 hours if you don't pay. This is not good for dating apps!
There was an episode of South Park in which, one of the main characters wanted soo badly to became a NASCAR driver but was not poor and stupid enough in his opinion to archive it. When I saw this app I've felt quite close to that - I'm not stupid enough to search for wealthy and thinking-that-they-are-hot idiots via app, life just outside my window is definitely cruel enough.
To be clear - all I want to say is; this is pathetic. But still funny!

Hi, thanks for sharing your feelings with us. And in fact, you are not the only one who doubted the app since its first release. However, we always look at the other side, Luxy would be the most serious dating app among anyone-can-join-for-fun ones. Luxy is not for everyone, only caters for 1% of the singles, as we always say. If you've tried Luxy's vouch-in feature, you'll see what I am talking about. BTW, the hot ones who join Luxy in fact are rated hot by others, not by themselves.
Still "hot" is not everything, if someone could at least try to think about making an app to find "just" interesting people - not hot, not wealthy...
From my experience the wealthier and hotter one get the dumbest and uninteresting one become - sad but true!

In fact, Luxy users do find each other interesting as they all love luxury things, and they all go for Luxy for seeking their like-minded partners.
