Conversation with Tech Support - Captivate General

Hope this helps ease some concerns:
Alice : Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Michael Vazquez: I was trying to download the OTA update and the process works out fine until it reboots and tries to apply the update
Michael Vazquez: It fails at 50%
Alice : I understand your concern.
Alice : Please allow me to explain this for you.
Michael Vazquez: Okay
Alice : There is no official release of the update over Samsung website and the update Over the air may corrupt the handset software.
Alice : Please do not update the software update OTA.
Michael Vazquez: Can we update via USB?
Alice : Once the update is released for download over the website, you can download the same update via USB..
Michael Vazquez: When will the update be released?
Alice : I apologize; There is no specific ETA mentioned for the release of the software at this moment, once the release is official you can find it on Samsung website.
Michael Vazquez: Okay, thanks.

You are now chatting with 'Stella'
Stella: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Keith: hello
Keith: i heard of the captivate update via ota
Keith: when i go to do a manual software update
Keith: my phone goes to make a connection and then stops saying there was a communication error
Keith: and cannot connect to att servers
Keith: I have driven around to 5 different cell towers in a 20 mile radius and i continue to get the same message
Stella: I request you not to update the phone manually.
Keith: I need this update badly to fix the poor gps
Stella: The update has not been officially released.
Keith: ok
Keith: so what can you do for me?
Stella: You will get the notification over the air if it is released.
Keith: I have a friend who received the notification
Keith: and he was able to update
Keith: there is also an ATT bulletin on their website saying the update is available
Keith: i can get you the link
Stella: Did he get the notification on the phone?
Keith: yes
Keith: http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-center/solutionDisplay.jsp?solutionId=KB110797
Keith: read the bottom
Stella: Thank you.
Stella: However, did you get the notification on your phone?
Keith: i did not get a notification
Keith: but i should be able to at least check for a software upgrade? it won't even let me do that
Keith: the direct message is the following
Stella: That is the reason, I request you not to manually update the phone.
Stella: I understand.
Keith: the red and white arrow comes up
Keith: and then it says
Keith: "communication failed"
Keith: "unable to communicate with the AT&T server
Stella: I understand.
Keith: regardless of the update... why can't my phone connect?
Stella: Thank you for the information.
Stella: However, please do not update the phone as you haven't received the notification on your phonne.
Keith: is there something i can do about my gps performance?
Stella: phone*
Stella: Are you getting any error messages when connecting to GPS?
Keith: gps takes minutes to get a lock and then it has me 500 yards from where i should be
Keith: it is very inaccurate even with the network assitance on
Stella: Is the phone charged to full?
Keith: yes and it is plugged in my car
Stella: Did you try to connect in the clear sky view?
Keith: and has a brodit mount, which is in my windshield with a direct shot to the sky
Keith: i have tried it at my local park where there is no trees... there it has me jumping around all over the place
Stella: I am sorry to know that.
Keith: I am on the road 60% of the time and rely on the gps.
Keith: i end up using the directions feature in google maps to get me where i am going because the gps is so poor.
Stella: From the Home screen, touch Application>> Settings >> Location
Stella: and security.
Stella: Touch Use GPS satellites to disable and tap on it again to enable the GPS satellite.
Keith: I have tried that and it doesn't help
Keith: it is rumored that this "update" is supposed to make the gps more responsive
Keith: and accurate
Stella: Once remove and reinsert the battery after that and then check for the result.
Stella: Once remove and reinsert the battery after that and then check for the result.
Keith: have tried that as well
Keith: it is consistently not accurate
Keith: I am thinking of returning the phone and going with another android phone
Stella: Samsung continues to listen to customer feedback on GPS performance expectations on launched Galaxy S devices. We are currently testing software updates, which will optimize GPS performance. We expect to be able to make the updates available in September and will communicate more information and download instructions in the next few weeks.
Keith: next few week? you got 9 days until october
Stella: I understand your concern.
Stella: However, There is no specific ETA mentioned for the release of the software at this moment.
Stella: I apologize for the inconvenience.
Keith: i will not update the phone if it does become available. I am not sure how an "unreleased update" got through the cracks
Keith: and makes me question samsung, which isn't good because all my televisions and appliances are samsung
Keith: if and when i do get an update, i will come back here to see if it is "official"
Keith: thanks for your help

Wow krad, that conversation looked like they were pressing buttons for canned responses, not actually typing to you.
Thanks to both of you for sharing, eases my mind. I'll wait till I get a notice and go from there.
From the phone on an app

What I don't understand is why If we are prompted to receive the update ota we aren't supposed to update?? And if there really wasn't an official update why in the world engadget claims to have received word that the official gps fix began rollout today from both samsung and att... This is getting stupid...

LOL I got the same "Alice". Basically told me the same thing about there not being an official update. I had asked then why I could use the update option in the phone and receive this fictitious update but it fail. She just repeated her canned response.
Their "support" sucks ass.

Ok stupid question for the next person who plays support roulette. How are US customers to install over USB since Kies is officially not released for the US?

why shouldnt I update OTA? I already did... but why would they say not to

Okay, I just got off the phone with Samsung Tech Support. I explained to the girl that I downloaded the update but it failed and then later it wouldn't download at all. Long story short, she told me Samsung hasn't released any firmware for the Captivate and anything I got must have been from AT&T and not Samsung. This conversation occured about 10 minutes after I spoke to AT&T and they told me that Samsung handles the updates. This whole situation is like a joke.

out of curiosity, how many people actually got notifications today legitimately? Did everyone move the date up to force the install? I doubt thats the case but this might explain why they are either playing dumb, or have no clue?? Just a thought

When I turned on my phone this morning, it automatically told me an update was available. I did not have any problems, just a long wait at 50% and another long wait at the Galaxy S screen when it was rebooting. The wait was long enough I started getting worried.

Yeah same thing here. It was around 2 mins for the 50% and around 1 min at the Galaxy S screen. Not a long time by real world standards but when you are thinking your phone is in the process of bricking it seems like an eternity.

Any non-contract phones ?
Guys I have been following XDA for a long time, never had a chance to post. I have a non-contract ATT Captivate without ATT 3G service. I have asked Samsung about how I should upgrade to JH7 and they have no clue. Can I update to this on Wifi ? or is a 3G service mandatory ?
Is anyone here in a case like me ? Please help guys

This is not the reason. I just checked the logs using Dalvik Debug Monitor
When you manually check for an update it looks like the phone sets up a special APN for checking updates...and you see the 3G/E icon start showing data activity. Using HTTPS, its attempts to connect to a server which I assume stores the update. The HTTP response code that is returned is 403, which is means the connection was "Forbidden". This is the reason for the communication error.
I assume, the connection is "Forbidden" because your SIM/IMEI number has not been provisioned for the update yet.
Also there is another way to reset the update timer. When you run a manual check for the update, it saves the current time stamp to /dbdata/databases/com.wssyncmldm/wssdmdatabase.db. The manual update process will not run if you are within the 24 hour window of this timestamp. If you delete this file and reboot your phone, your timer is reset.

Strange. There is nothing in my /dbdata/ folder at all.

Strange, I do not even have a dbdata folder. Where are you seeing that?

I actually got the notification tried to update and couldnt connect to the server + it started doing the update automatically. No taskiller

Sorry, I should mention you must be rooted. Also, I used adb to gain visibility into these folders. For some reason, I wasn't able to using Astro...it just showed an empty /dbdata/ directory.

I had to do the date forward trick to get it to download. It downloaded and installed 100% successful. My phone is stock as the day I bought it. Some people say they have seen "failed" install from being rooted, but it still installs.
Testing, and will report back.

Just set your calendar one day ahead.
I just want to know how this update would effect a rooted phone.... i am currently running SRE 1.3.1c
It seems like anyone with a rooted phone might get an error, but it still installs fine. First impressions is actually really good. The phone feels a little faster. The videos are smoother and so is the gallery. When I opened maps it found my location instantly instead of getting the %waiting for location" message. Accuracy was 1000 meters, but I didn't turn on the GPS.
Also the signal strength and internet speed seems much faster. And stronger for me

Just updated mine. Gps is a lot faster! I can even get a lock when indoors now.
I can no longer access the gps menu through the dialer though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The OTA update now allows me to go into the three button recovery mode. I couldn't do this before.
Does anyone know if we have an unlocked Captivate on another carrier, will be be getting the update? If not, how does one go about getting it?
Installed fine on my rooted phone gps seems snappy but I can't really test right now. Media scan still taking a while but the phone is less laggy while it's running.
So far so good considering I was ready to ditch this phone yesterday. Temporary rage reduction for me.

Downloading now....
Dropped connection during d/l now I cant get it to d/l at all even after a rommanger restore.
I manually checked for a software update on my rooted Captivate, and after downloading and rebooting, I got a message saying the update was not installed.
Mine isn't even showing an update available. I've set the date forward to tomorrow, the 24th, the 25th, 26th, 27th, none show an update available...grrrr...
Any link to the software other than OTA?
Update not installed but baseband version changed to JH7.
I don't notice any difference on a factory-software phone. GPS still does not work indoors at all. I'll try in my vehicle later.

Same here, on the white screen after installing the update it got to 50% and failed. Check my firmware still says jf6 with 2.6.29 [email protected] #2 kernel
I just went to download it on my sister's phone since hers is still factory stock, unrooted, etc...
Nothing at all. Didn't even download the update. Now I can't check for another 24 hours.

Software Update Function's Working - A Good Sign

When the phone first came out, the Software Update Check (Settings>Software update>Software update check) returned an error. Now it says "Current version is the latest version." Hopefully that's in preparation for an OTA push of the Gingerbread update. It can't get here soon enough.
Few hours ago i checked it now it was giving me authorization errors and time outs.
now i see it says latest update which means they are closing up on the gingerbread update i hope "Ice Cream" is available soon after that. - Side note: it was noted that Honey Comb was like Windows Vista (bug wise etc, which means "Ice Cream" is the Windows 7 of Android!
I don't know if it's possible, but it would behoove T-Mo/LG to get a bug fixing update out in the wild before most early adopters 14 remorse windows are up. I know some of you bought on launch day, but some of us waited. I myself have until a week from today.
Incidentally, I'm pretty sure what we really want on our G2xs is Android 2.3.4, still called Gingerbread. Honeycomb is for tablets.

Are you out of your mind? Look at the percentage of threads on the first page. 3/4 are devoted to problems. Here's a quick recap:
1) Screen bleeding
2) Wi-Fi either not connecting, dropping connections, or disabling profiles
3) Bluetooth not retaining profiles, not reconnecting, or not holding a connection
4) Reboots which LG acknowledged as a s/w problem after months of O2X complaints
5) "System checking..." forcing a hard reset at boot up
6) T-Mobile apps opening a 4G connection when Wi-Fi's enabled
We're all on the same ROM and radio and the majority of this stuff isn't hardware. So the "minority" to me are people who haven't really tried to use the functions above heavily and don't know they have problems.
I'm not having any issues with my phone. Battery life could be better but I use it a lot.

FYI LG is in charge of the software update not Tmobile. I recieved an email from an LG service rep and it said "As far as I know, our technicians are under review for the 2.3 Android version." This was said on a support email I had sent to LG. My G2x seems struggle to keep a good connection, especially in my home. I keep losing the signal and it disconnects. Tmobile said they were going to check my area to see if there are issues. If nothing gets better by the 9th of this month I'm returning mine before my 14 days are gone.
im getting force closes when trying to open the software update menu now. guess ill be flashing it whenever it comes instead of getting it ota -_-
You sir are right. I just checked and it now says current version is latest. Progress.

Did you do the software update on yours? My update is ready but wondering if that's what messed up my first edge
---------- Post added at 02:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:37 PM ----------
Ok I just finished a conversation with Samsung and here it is
Santino: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Ryan: Hello. I am on my second s6 edge. My first got the rotate screen issue. Is this caused from the update or is it a hardware issue? My #2 edge I haven't updated yet. Should I avoid this update?
Santino: Hi Ryan!
Santino: I am sorry to know that you are facing issue with the device after the software update.
Santino: I will be happy to help you.
Santino: As of now we have not encountered with the issue you are referring on the device.
Santino: Please provide me the Baseband version of the device. You can locate it under Apps > Settings > About device > Baseband version.
Ryan: ***** I have read this has happened to several people on sprint and Verizon.
Santino: Thank you.
Ryan: I have been reading its an issue with the gyroscope. Not sure if it actually goes bad or if the software messes it up? Some people have gone through 3+ edges with the same issue
Santino: Your device operates on Android™ version 5.0.2, Lollipop (G925PVPU1AOCF).
Santino: As of now have not encountered with the issue you are referring on the device. I recommend you update the software on device.
Ryan: It wouldn't have anything to do with the rapid charging that makes the gyroscope defective would it? I would have to have to go get a third phone. If this update messes my phone up I may consider a different brand of phone
Santino: I do understand your concern Ryan.
Ryan: Is there a supervisor that may know of issues with the edge? I read that Samsung and carriers are aware of the rotating issues.
Santino: Could you provide me with the Samsung link were the issue has been posted.
Ryan: It was on some android sites
Santino: I apologize, Samsung does not confirms the issue that are posted on Non-Samsung sites.

Sorry for all of the comments. Last one. I just talked to another support person and here is his answers. He says this whole rotation issue is software related and will be fixed
Adan: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Ryan: I just thought I would ask a second agent before taking my chances. I am on my second s6 edge (Sprint). My last one had the auto rotate issue. Was curious if its the update or a hardware issue? Not wanting to go back and get a third device so I haven't installed the update yet on this one
Adan: Hello Ryan!
Adan: I understand your concern. I will help you out with the information on Screen rotation.
Adan: The Screen rotation is a Software issue Ryan.
Ryan: Should I avoid the update that is currently available?
Adan: If you do not update the device now, you will be prompted in the future to update the device. Initially you will have the update the device later Ryan.
Ryan: I turned off automatic updates so it doesn't install unless I tell it to. Are you saying I will have to do this update to install the fixed update when it is available?
Adan: Not to worry, as you mentioned that the earlier device was facing the issue after the update, there will also be a fix for the issue. They will release a fix for the issue.
Ryan: My question is can I skip this current update and wait for the one with the fixes?
Adan: You might not be able to skip the current update Ryan. The other update will only be prompted on the device if you are updated to the latest version of Android for the device.
Ryan: so basically I can wait for the new update to be announced and then update to the bad one that's available now and then I will get a notice to update to the fixed software?
Adan: Yes Ryan. I am positive that the issue might not persists after updating to the software that you have now.
Ryan: How close is Samsung to releasing a patch to fix this issue? I have 13 more days I can return this phone if it happens again. Id hate to have to go back to an iPhone
Adan: The Update is a carrier specification and it differs from carrier to carrier , However, once the update is released you will be notified by the carrier through notifications on the device and also it will be posted on the Samsung Website.
Ryan: has the update already been made available and I am now just waiting on sprint to release it?
Adan: As of now the update has not yet been released Ryan.
Ryan: How soon until it is or do you have any knowledge on that? Like I mentioned I have less than 2 weeks to decide if I should keep this phone
Adan: I am afraid we at Samsung live chat do not have the information on the release dates of the updates. I do understand that you have 2 weeks for replacement.
Adan: Not to worry Ryan, the fix will be released for the device.
Had the same issue with my phone. Had to bring it back and get another one.
Wife's phone had the same problem, I've got verizon she has sprint, they replaced hers. Hopefully not a occurring problem
Auto Rotate / Edge lighting on 128 GB Model
I received my edge on Thursday of last week. Which was on the 16th. I had no problems until yesterday of the Auto Rotation. I downloaded a Auto rotater app to see if it will rotate. It will rotate if you lock it into landscape mode. But If you don't it will not rotate. I also noticed Calendar does not rotate and messages do not rotate and neither does web pages. But Full Screen Movies and Music will rotate even with Google apps. Not just youtube. I also noticed that if you play with home button clicking on it several times it will rotate the screen for a second then if tilted it rotate back. This could be just a fluke but I did notice this. I do not think it is the fast charger because if something was to burn out it wouldn't last for 10 days. Or it wouldn't last over 2 days beside when something burns out it's electrical it would smell like burning no matter if it was very small it still would smell like something has or had burnt. Especially when they say the battery is getting hot enough to burn it out. I had this on the charger for 2 days off and on and it never got so much as luke warm. Mine stays on the y axis at -39.23, and seems to be fine on the x axis. Maps do not rotate. either. So what I do know is out of the blue my phone did a reset a day before this happened. I did not reset the phone it seemed to be fine after. But Monday morning I saw the Camera Icons all upside down. I then did a factory reset and did not install any apps. Even after the Reset I still couldn't get rotation to work, another thing I would like to note is Edge Lighting never worked out of the box. I tested it multiple times and didn't really care if I had that or not. But now I do care. But I also don't want to go back and get a new one. Here is some of the issues why, No Verizon carrier in my area has the 128 gb model on hand. I would have to wait 3 to 5 days for one from Verizon if they had them. Which then put me out of the range anyway to get a brand new one. On top of this when I got to print the return label it states I am over the 14 days. Which I just got my phone last week so this blows.
I can return it to the store I am told by Verizon but either for a 32 or 64GB model. I really don't want to down grade. So in the end is this or is this not a Software issue. All of Im finding is debating on it is and that it isn't.

I have a brand new S6 Edge just received today and the rotation doesn't work. Seems to be a common issue but Samsung has no idea how to fix it and told me to exchange it. Well, because I am on a Sprint SWAC account and there are no corporate stores around my area that is a HUGE pain to do. Should have stuck with my gut and got the M9
I got a new one and haven't used fast charge yet. So I am going to watch it. But my edge lighting is working. Which makes me a feel bit better . This one still still shows china. But I won't take my chances and fast charge it. I have had it less than 24 hrs. So I will keep and eye on it.

Mine works fine but here's what the update is about https://community.sprint.com/baw/mo...jive-document?content=/api/core/v2/posts/6365
It looks like the updated fixed the issue by changing the rotation to the gyro and not the accelerometer. What I was told is that if you check it's still stuck at the wrong degree.

You need to use Odin to flash the stock firmware back to OCF. Then you can take the OTA.
can you direct me to the firmware you speak of

If you are or were rooted and have not tripped knox, you need to use Odin to get back to stock firmware state OCF. Then you can get the update.

Marshmallow update error 411 download unsuccessful

I have been trying to update my wife's bone stock S6 to Marshmallow today. When I check for updates, it shows that it is available. I tell it to download and I immediately get an "update failed to download". It does it on both wifi and lte. I've tried rebooting. Does anyone know what causes this error or how I can get the update installed? Is the update file out there to download it so I could do a manual flash?
Same issue. Very annoying.
same
Having the same problem with my s6 but my wifes s6 edge updated with no problems
Same issue here. Tried through the desktop updater as well but no update was found.
I really hope this isn't some April fools joke. Because it's doing the same thing for me.
Update has been pulled.
Apparently the update has been pulled.
This is From Verizon support:
"We have had a couple other customers chat in with the same issue (in the past 10 minutes) and we did confirm with Samsung that the Marshmallow update is on hold right now because of some bug fixes. They do not have an estimated time for the release of the update yet but once it is known it will become public."
We've been had. Jokes on is! Good one, Samsung assholes!
This is pure bull ****. Same problem here, update unsuccessful. Just great. 20 months later and I still can't get it, bad enough I can't root... wah.
They'll probably take another few months to release it again. Google really needs to put pressure on the providers to release these updates quicker.
Scratch that. About a half hour after my comment above, the update is downloading.
Was getting the same error. I just powered my phone off then turned it back on. Update screen popped up and it's downloading now.
Yep. I'm on Marshmallow now.
I was able to update just now as well.
Updated here as well.

This if ****ing retarded. Ive downloaded like 10 times and it fails between 1-30% every ****ing time. WTF!!!
I just noticed that I am on the April 2nd Security patch. I wonder if those that updated yesterday are showing a different patch level. Was there actually a bug that Verizon was able to pull, fix, and re-release in only hours? That has to be a record.
Anyone know where I can find the odin files for this?

New Update Bricked My Gear S2 Classic?

I've updated my (Canadian) Gear S2 Classic's OS a few times in the past without incident, but this time the update appears to have left it in a reboot loop. I get the power-on splash screen and a quick vibration every 4 seconds. I can interrupt it by holding down the power button, then tapping it when "Rebooting..." appears, but the only options in the reboot menu are Continue (no change), Download (stayed stuck there for a few hours, no change) or Power Off. There is no Recovery or Wireless Download option. I installed the new version of the Gear software on my Samsung Note 3 before starting, but it obviously won't connect now. Help!
Boot Loop after attempted 61Mb update
Same issue with mine. Yesterday I downloaded this 61Mb update, then I was opted to upload it onto my Gear S2. When the progress bar on my cellphone indicated that upload has finished I tapped the update icon and went to the kitchen to pour me some coffee. When I got back to the device I noticed the blinking boot screen. When the boot loop started annoying me and I figured out that the update eventually failed I long pressed the switch off button and realized that the reset option is missing. Only continue, download and shut down.
I took my Gear to service only to find out that they are devoid of the flashing device, whereas the available usb craddle is only for charging.
It's happened to me also
I have gear s2 Classic and after update it crashes like what other described ??
Has anyone found a fix for this? Just had to update my Gear S2 as well and same thing now, not booting or getting past the boot, holding power and trying different things, but not working. WTF????

I am getting a deja vu. seems to be a samsung glitch. I upgraded my S2 as you guys did and it got stuck in a reboot loop. The same thing happened with my earlier smart wacth, the 'Gear Fit'. After some time a new firmware was distributed and solved the issue. I wonder how this can be performed on these watches because I only have a charge cradle. Is the download via wireless access? Time will tell.

It updates wirelessly, through the gear app. I'm thinking that's where the problem is coming from
I'm in the UK and got the 61mb update today, it's downloaded to my s2 classic but I'm nervous of installing after what you guys have gone through.
has anyone successfully applied this update to their classic?

What firmware version are you on now? I did a gear software check and it says I am all up to date with PC5
Update: Just wanted to share a quick update. I logged onto the Samsung app today and finally got the update. One interesting thing was that when I first checked it said what it has been saying, that I am up to date, but then I unchecked the 'automatically check for updates' box and manually checked for an update again. This time it showed there was an update available. Not sure if that box has anything to do with it or just a coincidence but maybe worth a shot to anyone else having the problem.
I have the same issue. I have the Bluetooth only version but don't have a Samsung phone. Would be nice to know why some are getting updates and others are not.
Has anyone found a solution to the bootloop problem yet.
New update bricked my device too. Exactly as the OP described.
Add me as another with a rebooting gear s2.
Exactly same issue as described by op
Anyone found a fix for this yet? Samsung support so far pathetic, have tried several branches, still one or two left to try...
Hi guys! I'm from Malaysia. Just updated to this package, 61MB. I'm on boot loop. Pressed Power button continuously, got to "rebooting...", but never to recovery options,.... It just keeps boot looping...
Any advice? Thanks!
Follow-up: I'm back from vacation and now have time to deal with this. I purchased the watch online through bestbuy.ca, but the retail stores want nothing to do with warranty repairs unless you purchased their in-house Geek Squad plan. I therefore had to go to the Samsung Canada support website, where I struck up a text chat with a representative and have arranged to send the watch to them for repair/replacement. On the upside, they sent me a prepaid FedEx shipping label, so at least that's free. I'll post more as it proceeds. An interesting footnote, as soon as I mentioned that this seems to be a known issue in discussion forums, I was immediately copy-and-pasted this boilerplate: "Samsung does not have control over information provided in third-party websites/ forums. We cannot assure the information provided in those websites is correct. The information posted on forums cannot always be validated, we observe that many similar described issues are posted as a unique issue, but when assessed the actual causes of these instances often differ. I've had very good service from Samsung Canada. It's never taken more than a couple days at the shop. The original Galaxy S with failed update and Gear Fit which wouldn't charge after a month.

My install consistently fails at 15%. Took it to service center, they flashed newest firmware on my phone and tried it again but again fails. Has anyone successfully installed this 61mb update?
