XT720 battery and heating issues - Milestone XT720 General

My wife's complaining that her X720 usually heats up and sometimes runs out of battery while she's at work. Since I'm not there I don't know exactly what is happening, but on inspection when she's back home, I can see that main battery usage was over 40% on
Cell standby. And she's not using the phone to make or receive calls all the time.
Is it possible that due to bad reception in her office area, the phone is constantly trying to go to 3G and then back to 2G, therefore using more power?
I guess if this is the case, the only solution would be set the phone to 2G only while she's on the office, or is there something else that can be done?

I have that problem with my phone too. It happens randomly after calling someone. I wish I knew how to fix it permanently, but my temporary fix is to shut the phone off and restart it.

Do ya using apps2sd for that mobile
When i used app2sd for my xt720, and the sd card have problem ( that time i didnot know) the battery drain very fast ...
100% > 40% after one night.
After I reformat and found one bad sector in sd card, i replace with new one and for now it's ok
You can try to run without the sd card or refomat the sd card
...

Its the 3G radio, use it on 2G and check it out, no heating whatsoever.

I've got a friend that has this heat problem too . Does it still happens after the most recent firmware upgrade (the one that ups the CPU to 720MHz)? It may be the 3G radio got stucked at a high gain after a call.

My xt720 has ran hot since I've got it. Only when I use it for extended periods. Usually at around 80 to 90 Fahrenheit highest I've seen it 108, I dont think its very good for the phone.

After the rom upgrade my xt 720 does not become hot any more.

I'm in the US so my phone came with the upgrade. Is it just the xt720 that gets hot or do other android phones get hot? And does anyone know wat a dangerous temp is for a phone?

What ROM upgrade? Is there a ROM upgrade anywhere?

Thats the way it is bro...
Its a milestone thing...
But if you use it in 2g mode,it will be cold and the battery life, will go 3 times more.

Battery doesnt last long

Hello,
The battery on the wifes phone doesnt last but a half of a day. She plugs it in overnight and if she does not touch it it will die around 4pm. If she texts then it will die around 1 -2pm.
We have set her apps (facebook, email, etc) to update every hour or longer and it still does not help.
What else can we do? This is horrible..
I know this isn't a fix by any means but what I did is that I ordered two new batteries plus a charger on ebay for about 10 bucks, ill see how that goes once they get here. D2G battery life is definitely one of its biggest issues

Is the phone rooted? no? one big thing is to root the phone and disable/remove the stock apps that are unnecessary, the phone has tons of things, facebook widgets and weather widgets and stuff, and even if you delete them they never stop running and killing the battery. Rooting and having them be renamed in the phone so that the phone cannot find and open them helps with battery life significantly. My phone originally had life almost as bad as your wife's but stopping those apps made it so the phone could hold 90% charge for a good 4-12 hrs if it isn't touched. Also possibly setting apps to not update at all unless you open them might help too, I let gmail auto update but nothing else.
Aside from that you can shut off the gsm radio in the phone. I forget how to do this but search on the forums and I'm sure you can find instructions, the phone has both a gsm and cdma radio and some people say disabling the gsm radio saves power, I'm not so sure, but it can't hurt, you can always turn it on again if you go abroad to another country and need gsm reception.

Copy that. The phone is not rooted, yet.
I recently did my droid x and am still learning the ins and outs of doing it. Once I feel comfortable with mine I will do hers. Would a battery be covered under the phone warranty? It has happened since day 1.
It should be, yeah. Have to call your service provider to be 100% sure though.

[Q] HTC Desire S radio

HI guys
I get my desire S before week ago but I think I have problem in radio as when I leave my phone in stand by for 6 hours it loss 50% from charging with radio switch-on and if I switch-off the radio it loss 2% from charging so I think there is some problem in the Radio pls can anyone help me
really I am so confused with this problem
The only thing that I can think of would be if you were in an area where there is weak 3g signal and the phone if constantly getting on and then Falling off the 3g network.
There are a couple of other threads in this forum all about excessive battery drain, one about excessive drain with screen off, although not specifically about radio, so possibly post this into one of them.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
I just use the 2G network
I ask if I update the radio may be the problem will solved ? and how can do that ?
pls to advise me
To upgrade the radio currently with S-ON you can find the HTC/official ROM with the latest revision radio. This would be a little trial and error, install it with the goldcard method and see if it helps. Another idea, if you are just using 2g, have you set the mobile network to GSM only instead of GSM/WCDMA? It may be worth a shot.

Even on 2G only, I think the drain can be severe in an area with very poor signal, because the phone uses much more energy than normal trying to contact a mast.
If you look at Settings > About phone > Battery > Battery use, you would normally expect the display to be the greatest drain on the battery; but in an area with very bad (almost non-existent) signal, you might expect to see Cell standby at over 50%.
In the building where I work, almost no radio signal gets through, so most of us here find our phones reporting "Emergency calls only" and prompting to choose a network.
But even there, I'm only losing about 25% in six hours. The phone gets quite warm though: about 38 degrees C - in airplane mode, it's down to 33 degrees.
I've stopped most things from syncing too much though. Do you perhaps have some apps synchronizing very often (and which therefore do very little when the radio is off) ?

your phone is way too warm unless the room temp is close to that as well.
I already switch-off all synchronizing and did factory reset and try to put on GSM only but the problem didn't solve yet
I thing may be the radio version not compatible with my network or something like this so I ask if can find another version of radio or make upgrade with my phone in S-ON
Hi guys
The problem had been solved as when I replaced the SIM the problem disappeared so I think the problem was in my SIM
thanks for every one who support and help me
I want to say that this phone is great and one of batter HTC phone that released so I hope for more support from XDA
I am reading this thread and I am a bit confused. How are you guys going on GSM only?

Anyone suggest any fix?
call *#*#4636#*#* and then "telefon info", there u should be able to change it
I cannot make a call with the Desire S in the area where my ancient LG PHONE has no problems with the signal.
So, what is the Desire S? Just a toy?
I am disapointed.

Erratic data

I'm temporary assigned to Cheyenne, WY and just got my Charge since my DroidX bit the dust. Can't wait to get back to Orlando which is covered in LTE but in the meantime I'm stuck on 3G.
My issue is that my data icon keeps going to 3G with a little D underneath it which means i have no data feed and when I do something that requires data, like the market, it doesn't always kick back in right away, which causes some apps not to work.
Has anybody else experienced this issue or am I just on a crappy tower? I did upgrade to ED2 in hopes that that would fix it.

Same issue - different state
Mods sorry I double posted. Please take down my similar thread. Here is what I posted.
I have a Thunderbolt and really enjoy 95% of how it works - except of course the battery life. So in an effort to retain the function of the Thunderbolt and improve battery life I picked up a Droid Charge. The screen is FANTASTIC and it runs almost as fast as the Bolt.
Here comes the big BUT!! But the data connection falls off a lot and I have to do a reset to get the 3g data connection back. There are some of other smaller things but the big BUT makes the Charge unusable for me.
Anyone a quick fix to this issue?
I am surprised this issue hasn't been reported more widely.
Experience tells me that Sammy ROM fixes are sssllloooww to come along.
So unless there is something I am missing - back goes the Sammy.
Also another quick question - anyone get Skype to work?
Thanks
I am having a bunch of connection issues as well. It seems like the 3g connection is spotty and handing off from 4g to 3g is worse. To make matters worse, if I am transferring anything when the issue occurs the transfer is toast and the app needs to be killed before it behaves again.
As for Skype, the one in the marker works (the non VZ one) so far. Haven't tested voice, but VZ ver wouldn't even run.
I have had the same problem with my thunderbolt so I returned it and got the charge and haven't had as much of a data problem and the battery life is so much better than the bolt.
No data issues here. But there also isn't LTE offered in the area so I guess I wouldn't be experiencing 4g/3g swapping ever...
In fact, I'm actually experiencing much better connectivity (wifi, 3g, gps, voice) than I was on my Fascinate.
No 3G here either but still erratic
Just to clarify, 4g is not available in my primary area. My phone has a good solid lock on a good solid signal then BOOM no more data.
Given what some of the others have said - it sounds hardware related.
Probable best to just take it back.
Yup, shoddy 3G
I'm having issues with sporadic 3G connectivity as well. Previously, I owned a Droid Eris and never had any issues with 3G in my area leading me to believe it's a problem with the Charge. I don't live in a 4G area so there is no interference there. I'll be mid-app and boom, it drops for about 2 minutes or until I toggle the data switch off/on.
Glad I'm not the only one, but still very annoying.
Aside from my few hardware/design complaints of the Charge, THIS issue is by far the worst that directly affects the user experience.
Samsung, are you reading this thread? Please help us!
I'm having the same issue. I was about to call verizon to make sure there were no outages. Places I normally have no issue maintaining 3g coverage I'm dropping down to 1X.
i had the same problem, i went to verizon and they reactivated my phone and now my phone works great with no problems. go to verizon and tell them to reactivate your phone, they may also give u a new sim card too.
Went to Verizon
Yep - went to Verizon also. Left the Charge there. We'll see where it goes but for now too many negatives. As I said earlier, I really like the Sammy screens started with the Fascinate. I just don't feel like waiting around for the slow train that Sammy/Verizon always seem to be on for fixes. Hopefully I am wrong soon but for now I am right.

It's a network and/or modem firmware issue - the Thunderbolt is plagued with the EXACT same problems.

OT F.E. Warren? My Cousin was stationed there, he was a guard at the Minuteman III ICBM Silo's and Launch Facilities, are you on the base or at the Missile's? I hope the deployment goes well! OT
Back on Topic, I noticed that little D underneath the 3G today and thought "what the?" lol. It was only there for a few seconds, so I dismissed it, I'll keep a watch on it though and report back any data issues.
I'm on base thank Jebus, I work behind a desk in the Communications SQ. As for the D, I went into vzw and they say claim it's normal. Personally I think it has something to do with the bad infrastructure we have in Wyoming, causing major power drain issues on my phone.

My wife's droid charge is having very bad issues with the 3g dropping and never coming back. Were in el paso, TX.
Same issue here in Orlando. 4G to 3G drops data...very annoying....wife is ready to return for iPhone4. Help please! Don't want fruit in house.
Having the same problem in Alabama, don't have 3G yet and yet I get the D and then 1X and it completely drops out. Last night I lost data completely and wouldn't come back up even after I rebooted the phone. I wasn't sure if this was due to the battery being about < 5% (I was trying to kill it) or what. About to boot my phone back up and see how it does. I had just switched WiFi off in my apt. and never got the 3G data stream.
I have it set to CDMA only since there is no 4G in my area right now, don't know if that really helps or hurts the situation though.
I actually thought the D meant that something about the stream being dormant because I do get it a lot of times but when I refresh facebook or something, 3G immediately comes back up.

How is your data doing lately, any better?
It's not getting any better but I talked to tech support and they said it's a known issue. Guess there'll be an ED3 soon.

Device getting hot when navigating

Is anyone else experiencing the lower part of the device getting hot when using navigation?
Don't worry. It's normal. Sensation is getting hot when is heavily used.
Mine too, gets very hot, front and back where the unlock ring sits.
The bizarre thing is, it keeps staying hot, or even hotter, even when I have finished and its resting.
Sometimes its a bit uncomfortable to hold, hope it doesnt die on me!
mine is also like that.

Try plugging your phone into your car charger, turning GPS on, co pilot on, with Bluetooth sending music to your car stereo and go for a 200 mile drive like I did the other week, I could've cooked eggs on the damn thing, however the heat is normal and nothing broke, I think.

It's normal across the board for the phone, but that doesn't mean it's ok. I think the phone tends to run way too hot for a passively cooled device. It may be attributed to a battery or even software issue.
I have found if you are not using the data for high speed data. P ut my phone on 2g "GSM only" My phone runs cool and battery lasts all day. Plus you still get all your sync.
This is under settings -- wireless -- mobile networks -- network mode -- set to gsm only.
Works great.. When you are going to be doing heavy data put it on auto.
It's quite normal. I had the same scenario while using GPS with car charger plugged in on my Nexus One, G2X and Sensation....
APP ??

Low Signal gets One A9 burning hot and drains battery

Hello community,
I have got an A9 for almost a year now. This begun a few months after buying it (meaning it was not like that from the beginning).
The phone is 100% stock (no root, no unlocked bootloader, no nothing).
The problem is this: When the phone is in a low coverage area (2 bars or less) and I am talking on the phone or using mobile data or even leaving it in my pocket with the mobile data setting turned on (and it is not connected to any wifi network), the phone becomes blazing hot (more than 50 Celsius) and drains the battery within 1 hour max. On the other hand, if mobile data is turned off, or the phone is connected to a wifi, or the mobile signal is full or close to full everything is fine.
I tried factory resetting, I even got the nougat upgrade a couple of days ago and I even tried using it in safe mode, the problem just persists. My only personal conclusion is a hardware malfunction which I truly hope it's not.
If anyone can be of help, it will be much much appreciated.
Hate to say it but every Android phone I've owned does that. It's because its constantly trying to find a signal. You are better just to turn off data in those areas. Unless you need it.
