[Q] GSM Android phone with Keyboard - General Topics

I Currently use the HTC Touch Pro 2, but i want to change to Android.
i've done my research but i can't find a good GSM Android phone with a Keyboard.
Can I please get some help in the matter?
Thank you
Alejandro

Are you looking for high end mid range or cheap?

Hey, thanks for answering, I'm looking for the best I can get.
Now I have the HTC touch pro 2

the HTC Desire Z? Coming soon, was announced the other day !

HTC Desire Z or, if you absolutely can't wait, Motorla Milestone

Htc desire Z (Out october) or The motorola Milestone 2 (Out this month so dont get the first one )

UHm... thank you!!!
now question, why wait for the HTC when the motorola is available now and has 1000mhz processor instead of 800?
it seems like a better deal, what am i not seeing?

I guess Motorola quality and support is less than HTC's is

although the desire z is only 800mhz it uses the 2nd generation of quallcomm snapdragon technology, its said to be nearly twice as fast as the standard desire that also has a 1000mhz cpu, it also has a much improved gpu over the first generation of snapdragon

Ok then, I decided to go now with the Motorola MIlestone 2, but can't find it anywhere to buy!!! just this random website that was selling it for 699 dollars...
any thoughts?

It isn't released yet It's coming soon

Assuming of course your buying from the UK. As already said, its not out yet.
Its a real shame though as in my opinion, the Samsung Galaxy S PRO is the daddy but there are some serious issues with the non-keyboard Galaxy S. I hope that when (if) the Pro S gets released here these are resolved. The Samsung Galaxy S seems to be rated as far superiour GFX and processor on many websites compared to the current range of HTC and still rate just slightly above the Motorola and the new to be launched Z and Desire HD. Its important to note though that these "people" are only guessing and comparing against what they think the new chips will do so it could be inaccurate - until a device is really launched, no one of us can really tell its true performance (hardware alone does not do this).
Like you, i'm in desperate need of a Qwerty phone and sadly, there seems to be no real phone for me. I want a 4+ inch screen with ALL the bells and whistles and am happy to pay for it!
I keep searching in vain .... I think the nearest so far *MAY* be the Dell Lightining..... maybe...
edit: sorry, forgot to say that the Dell is WP7. Android still doesn't support Exchange properly (DYOR, im fed up with explaining). Having said that, I keep reading that WP7 will offer full Exchange support but until its released, won't truley know.

In my experience, do not rush into buying hardwares. Unless your rich that is. Just wait a couple of days after the release and read the reviews or go play with the thing first hand.
On that note, you should probably get a Desire Z.

Sooooooooo I see the Desire Z is already on Ebay, any ideas when the milestone 2 will be?
I want to buy this phone Asap, all the reviews and info seem to point at the Milestone like the better choice

Any news on the HTC Ace guys?

Hey guys,we've all been hearing and seeing things about the upcoming HTC Ace(along with Schubert with Windows Phone 7),right?Well,we know that it will be similar to the Evo/Leo,will also be known as Desire HD,and will look stunningly cool. However,I am lacking the knowledge of any details.
I heard somewhere that it will be sporting a more powerful GPU that the current Snapdragon devices. Is this confirmed? Also, will its CPU be anyhow better than the current Snapdragons?Because I am between this and the Galaxy S.But I love HTC's phones, interface etc and would be ok if it was just a little more powerful than my Desire. If it's just the bigger screen(which will most probably not be AMOLED) and better camera(I think it will have 8MPx like the Evo[?]) it's not worth it.
So what do you guys think?
They are holding a press event on 15th Sept. So hopefully it will be announced then.
My guess is it will be exactly the same as the Evo except the radio.

Well,if that's the case it's a pity that such a nice device will be gone to waste...I mean,by September/October the new Snapdragons with dual-core processors will be just out of the corner! Why make a phone that can't have the latest and greatest?
I hope the Ace will be available in the US.
I like some of the high-end Android phones but I am on a GSM carrier, so that leaves me with the lackluster options of the Samsung Galaxy S (which I don't really like at the moment) and the Nexus One.
There are 4 amazing Droid phones that I would love to get my hands on, but they are all on Verizon. What is up with that?
At least you are in the US pal!If you change carriers you can get all awesome phones available! But I live in Europe, and more specifically in Greece! What about us here dude?We too are stuck with either Galaxy S and Desire.
*** gloat post ***
I live in the UK and we get pretty much everything all the time. Only thing we lack behind is 4g but I know O2 are testing this in Slough at the moment and reporting speeds of 150meg if rumours are to be believed.
I've even heard in another thread that we will be getting WinPhone 7 before the US should you decide to jump to it....

I know what you mean, but I highly doubt they can produce the new dual-core or the 1.5GHz ones en masse by Xmas...
And a Snapdragon is still an extremely nice upgrade for those of us still on a 576MHz device

[Q] What to buy?

Hi im in the process of looking for a new upgrade from my touch pro2.
I was intending to get a Desire S, due to its aluminium body and 1ghz processor. But my provider has the Motorola Atrix and Samsung Galaxy S on offer too.
All 3 phones cost the same monthly fee when bundled with the same phone plan.
What would you get? HTC Desire S, Moto Atrix or Samsung Galaxy S. My last 2 phones have been htc and Ive been very impressed with the build quality of them. I maily use the phone for web browsing, watching movies, and occasional games and do enjoy loading roms etc.. Anyone have any advice on what to get or what not to get?
i would get the moto atrix fingerprint + dualcore ownz
Don't get Moto due to locked bootloader. I had to choose between Galaxy S, Nexus S and Desire S.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
get the moto atrix!
Well Desire S has a locked bootloader too. And up to now, there are no updates about the unlocking announcement of HTC
Thanks for the advice.
Ive checked out the atrix a little on youtube and it does look nice and responsive. Seems lag free and that will be strange comming from winmo 6.5 on my htc touch pro 2 lol. The games on the atrix run very well too.
I suppose its more furture proof being dual core and I am a nvidia fanboi lol.
So the Desire S and Atrix both have locked bootloaders? So no flashing on either device untill either of the companies provide an unlock or someone hacks one?
I'd say go Desire S....(in fact I did, and I also came from a HTC WM device - topaz)
You're used to HTC phones, you obviously like the Sense look and feel and you'll get a head start with the conversion to Android having the already familiar Sense as you user interface.
Currently Desire S and Moto both have locked bootloaders but Desire S can be unlocked with XTC and will hopefully be software unlocked either by XDA Alpharev or HTC.
Good luck picking!
Yeah I do like the sense look and feel, and have been sick of trying to run android on my touch pro 2 only to have it sleep of death on me after 20 mins
Im wondering how much difference the dual core vs single core cpu in these phones would have on phone lag, especially when it comes to web browsing/navigation etc. Are most of you Desire S users happy with the power under the hood, so to speak?
Also I work in a pretty rough environment and my old touch pro 2 has dents and scratches all over it, its survived being dropped from 3mts in the air down onto concrete lol. It wont die.
Ive read the moto atrix seems plastic like, that worries me. Do you think the desire s would be pretty tough?

Desire S seems plenty fast for me, I don't play games on the device and browsing speed is mainly determined by the network speed as oppossed to CPU power.
Screen protector and a case should be a must, even though Desire feels like a strong well made device you won't want to wreck it and it will still be smaller than your old device.
anyway u still don't know what apps for android are coming and how much cpu they'll need, so with a dual core u are more future proof than with a single core
On my opinion, I recommended to buy desire s, I moved from touch pro 2 as well , MOTO atrix's screen is bull****, don't buy it , you will loss money, galaxy s2 is best one, but price is too high at momnent, just wait couple weeks
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
hmm thanks for the advice guys, ill go to a store tomorrow and compare the 2 phones builds. I am thinking ill probably go with the desire s.

I am more or less on the same boat, but I'm torn between desire s, galaxy s2 and iphone 4. (the dark side is tempting a bit )
Coming from hd2 with desire rom (lost it... ) I know I will love d.s, also it is the cheapest of those above so more likely I'll get one as soon as I will leave the bath.
I had a Atrix for a while but ended up sending it back. It is a really nice device, super fast and pretty good build quality (although i'd say the Desire S is better).
The negative for me were:
1. Battery Life sucked (although the Desire isn't amazing in this area either)
2. Motoblur sucked: Really disliked the interface although Sense is also showing its age (Launcherpro ftw)
3. Apps: I've found a total of 2 apps where I can see the benefit of a dual core processor; Dungeon Defenders and Google Earth (noticeably smoother on the atrix)
4. Cost: Total cost of phone over the contract was 1/2 that of Desire S, In a few months I'm pretty sure I could pick up a dual core tablet for the difference.
One thing, I am playing the lastest gameloft games (The games that have the best graphics) and they work perfect... i dont see why i need a dual core phone?!?!
BTW Its Dungeon Hunter 2... an AWESOME game xD
Between Galaxy S and HTC Desire S I’d go for the second cause 1st I personally don’t like Samsung’s implementation of UI and menu and 2nd HTC has a more solid build.
Ive had a SGS and had nothing but problems. The phone spent more time in the repair centre than i it was with me so eventually i sold it and bought a DHD and now also own a desire s.apart from the screen size the desire s is a better all round phone imo.sgs had the motherboard changed 2 times, screen turned dull and maps was miles in accurate plus no camera flash

I'd say go Desire S, but then I'm biased, I think that you'll love Sense over TouchWiz in no time.
Well thanks for everyone's input. I ended up with the desire s, the atrix looked good, but I didn't like the MOTO theme. The HTC sense is much nicer looking and I'm familiar with it. So far the fone is great. I'm missing my touch pro 2 keyboard, but ill be use to the onscreen kb soon enough.
Thanks again, time to learn as much as I can about this new world of android.

[Q] Which phone to buy

Hello guys,
I am new here. I wanted to buy an android phone which should be under 15k (can increase the budget to 16 or 17k). I have shortlisted Motorola DEFY primarily because of its looks. I would browse the internet take pics, play games, and experiment with it (developing stuff, OC,installing custom ROMs etc) apart from the normal things. Please tell me if I have chosen the correct one if not please suggest me one.
P.S I am from India.
and yes I saw this somewhere "GPU is weaker than all of the above phones, so future games (even some current games) may lag, SAR rating (not important IMO), no more updates after Froyo." is it really a down?
i think the better fhone for your use is LG o2x. This phone have boot free and is very good to play games.
Budget!!
it for more than 20k here!
what bout the htc evo 4g
The thunderbolt.....
Sent from my HTC Bliss using XDA Premium App
HTC EVO is for more than 25k and and I couldn't find a quote for HTC thunderbolt
And yes guys Rs15k is equal to about $320
How about the Huawei Ideos X5 (U8800). Similar hardware to Desire Z, without the keyboard obviously. Should fit in your price range. I got mine for under $200.
huawei? bad customer support and off-course brand value
But leaving that I got this from gsmarena
"a. bad cpu. b. no radio. c. bad touchscreen. d. bad battery life. e. bad signal reception. f. bad service coverage. Still if you want to buy it then go for it !!"
Is is better than Motorola Defy?
Lol, read again, he/she is replying about the Dell XCD to the post below, some dude claiming it is the same phone. Which it is no where close.
Anyway, you can compare here.
CPU, RAM, memory etc the same, except no keyboard.
Are you sure that it is a better phone than Defy?
I asked a friend (because I am a noob) about the Huawei and Defy he said defy is better because more development (software-ROMs) and better GPU which is very useful for playing games as I could wait for loading but cannot wait and get good quality while playing games.
He is probably right then, I'm sorry I don't have a Defy to compare with
Also check if you can what lens the defy has. I know some can do 720p video recording and some cannot, but maybe better to check out the defy forum section.
Edit: By the way, the SE Xperia Play also uses the adreno 205 GPU
No offense xmsnx.
know of any good phone in the price range?
Btw SE Xperia Play is almost double my budget.
I meant, the same gpu is in the Ideos X5, so it must good enough
Anyway if I was you, I would visit a store and try out some phones first if possible.
But good luck, hope you get the best phone you can
Thank you very much
Any one else wants to share their views?
Ehem, what about SGS (scl version is cheaper than amoled) idk how does it costs actually, but I think it can fit you
If I were you I will buy SGS (still good for games), DHD (the same) or Xperia Play (exclusive games and this nice control sticks). Motorola Defy is not good for games if you are looking on this 3 smartphones .
I have the original Droid Incredible - got it the day it was released and absolutely love it, but it is getting close to the time when I am going to upgrade. Would like to stay away from Motorola, but pretty much open to other brands. Very happy with HTC, but Samsung would be a close 2nd. Anyone know of a phone with similar width to the original Incredible? I really like what I have read about Galaxy S2, Sensation SE & Vigor. Must be on Verizon and would prefer the smaller width, but I have a feeling these sizes may be a thing of the past. Anyone know of a more narrow phone than above mentioned that would still perform about the same?
Guys, Guys, his budget as he stated is 15k INR which is about US$310. And here in India the prices also are (little) higher that the US or EU. So, in India the Defy costs abot US$300 and the Galaxy SLCD version costs US$365 and they basically have the same TI OMAP 3630, but the SGS LCD is clocked at 1Ghz while Defy is clocked at 800Mhz.
And in this budget the closest things up and down are the Galaxy Ace(US$287) and the Galaxy SLCD at the moment, and Galaxy Ace is crap. But I would refrain from buying a Moto.
SGS , DHD and Xperia Play all of them are above budget for me. My dad is very particular about the budget he is getting me a 15k phone only after so much of pleading.

Newbie, Thinking of buying a Desire S

Hi, Im thinking of getting a Desire S as my next phone. Im not exactly new to this as i had a regular Desire for about 18 months which i rooted, s-off and installed many customs roms.
I was looking for a upgrade and bought a Sensation a few weeks ago but its not for me as i find the phone abit too big. Even though its really fast, I dont find it comfortable to use.
The only phones that i can see that are similar size to the original desire is LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix or Desire S. But as I want Sense, the Desire S is only the option. Even though it is not dual core, it should be much quicker than a Desire as;
- Has 50% more RAM. 768MB compared to 512- 1GB internal memory so no need for A2SD which should make things faster- Processor, even though its a 1GHZ i believe it can be overclocked to over 1.8GHZ and at a safe 1.4GHZ. Is this correct?
In terms of ROMS, the Desire S has got a large collection.
Anything else that i have missed out or need to know?
Thanks
Hi, please tell me where did you find it ?
This configuration is awesome.
From what you've written there, you already know the answer as to which phone you should be getting. If you are lookin for something th same size as the Desire S then there is no real competition as faras I'm concerned - not just for design and specifications, but also for ROMs, development and user forum support on XDA
As the Nike adverts say "Just Do It!!"
Thanks guys, am I correct regarding the overclock statement I've made?
Hi.
If You are not bothered with not having the latest tech, then I would say Desire S is a good choice.
So far android experience is great on it, haven't found any real reason to go with multi core just yet.
Things You'll like - alloy unibody, size, battery life (depending on rom and useage), overall speed, quite decent main camera + front cam (skype works very well), price (I wouldn't sign for a long contract on it though).
Cons - well... battery life (still, ain't bad but more energy efficient devices are going to be in sale soon)
Good luck.
You are correct with all statements
The Desire S also has better battery life than the original, thanks to its larger capacity, and the more optimized 2nd gen CPU (which is very good for OC'ing)
I have my ds for 6 months now, and im very happy with iti had the same problem like you (the sensation was to big)
I had the choice between samsung galaxy s and desire s, and i have choosen the ds because of sense too
Gesendet von meinem HTC Desire S mit Tapatalk
Decision made, desire s it is. Just need to put my sensation on eBay now.
Also noticed that sensation xl has the same CPU as the desire s which is clocked to 1.5ghz.
I think there is a thread on here somewhere about the CPU being the same as the one in the Sensation, and i think that though it is the same model number the one in the Sensation it is a later generation model so it is designed differantly and runs at a higher speed.
The only other thing i would say is perhaps wait a month or so and see what new models HTC announce. it could be that the Desire S gets upgraded similar to the move from Desire to Desire S.
Edit heres link to the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459911
There is a HTC primo coming out in a few months but that only has 512mb RAM.

Yup, you missed something huge. THE MWC IS COMING IN LESS THAN A MONTH !!!!!! The Desire S was revealed at MWC last year. Surely, something waaaaaay better will show up this year. I LOVE my desire s, but i won't reccomend you to buy it at this time.
The Galaxy S Advance has been announced, it's roughly the same size as the Desire S (4.0 inch screen), similar price but has much better hardware (Dual core 1 Ghz CPU, Super Amoled Screen). HTC must compete with this, so somthing big (with sense ) will come at MWC. TRUST ME. Even if you don't like what comes, you can buy the Desire S later, it's not like HTC is gonna stop supplies

Sadly, as much as I love my Desire S too, I can only agree with Shrome.
Unless you aren't too bothered about having the latest and greatest, and aren't a tech-head, this phone is recommended and will serve you well for basic smartphone tasks.

I'm sure the Desire S will serve for a lot more than just basic tasks. I know synthetic benchmarks are not a lot to go by, but considering the stock Galaxy Nexus gets 32 fps in Nenamark 2 and my Desire S gets 27 fps (without any overclock), it's somewhat reassuring and makes me believe the Desire S still has a bit of kick remaining.

I believe the HTC Primo will be the replacement for the Desire S but it only has 512MB RAM.
Also, i presume the phone will be launched towards summer time and have a price of £300? Whereas the Desire S is available on ebay now for roughly half that price.

Although the leaked specs say 512mb, I highly doubt the device would come like that.
HTC wouldn't downgrade the succesor.
Leaked specs aren't always true you know
The HD2 original leak said it has 384mb RAM. But it ended up having 448mb (576mb actually, if you unlock the hidden RAM)
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
You can't be sure of any of those things( except the price, maybe). The leaks are HIGHLY unreliable. I'm 99% sure it won't have lower RAM than the Desire S if it's a successor. For all you know, it may be a succesor to Wildfire S, cost waaaay less, and the Desire S may have a different succesor entirely
Hmmm, not sure now.
When will the official release be of these phones? And when they become available, are we talking weeks/months?

325i Please see my response to your other thread about coming from the old Desire. I just edited it. Noticed a worrying trend on the recent Amazon reviews.
Regarding new phones releases, it depends. If the manufacturers have any sense, they'll have the product ready to swing into the shops riding on the hype-wave from MWC. Others may want to hang back and see how their product is received before committing to getting x amount of them made.
For the first time I'm not 100% about sticking with HTC for my next phone. I just don't trust their reliability and after sales support so much any more. I buy my phones outright SIM-free and unlocked so I can't really afford to make a bad decision.
Problem is looking around at alternatives I don't yet see anything tempting, baring in mind I don't like whopping screens and not too fussed about multi-core devices. I mean if the Xperia Arc S was slightly smaller and had a front-facing camera I'd probably already be saving up for it.
The Sony (minus the Ericsson) Xperia S is just far far far too big. OK 12MP camera but I bet it still blurs if taking a moving shot. Plus is it me, or have the designers copped out? A formless, plain rectangle of a phone like SGS2. Doesn't look comfortable at all to hold, and doesn't hold a candle to the Desire S in terms of looks.
Only thing I'm certain of is I wont be selling my DS. I'll keep it around so I can stay in this section of XDA and carry on with testing and support.
yeah the desire s overclocks very well indeed.mine will run at 1.5ghz stable. its definatly a much more capable phone than the original desire and as you say there arnt many other phones that match the form you are looking for.
we also have the best section on xda with a huge selection of roms.cant go wrong really.BUY ONE!
Think ill go for the Desire S.
I also buy my phones sim free, usually slightly used ones off ebay. Ive decided to get a Desire S, if i newer/better HTC comes out, i can always put the Desire S back on ebay.

[Q] Best all round phone in the market today?

Hey all, I was just wondering what is the best all round phone available right now. In terms of features, performance, price and support. I wish to upgrade my HTC Desire and wish to get the opinions of users of other phones which is why I ask
hmm
i was thinking the same 5 months ago, and i decided to buy xperia neo
it will get ics update in 2 months and it costed 200 euros sim free 1ghz processor and 8mpx camera, havnt founf game that lags on this phone

ok...i help you!!!!
if u need costly and great phone....go for htc sensation xe...
if u want mid range device....go for samsung galaxy ace!!!!...gud luck.
Galaxy s2. Fo show. But make sure you're getting the one with the exynos chipset, not the snapdragon.
you can choose GSS2 for android or perhaps Nokia Lumnia for w7.... it's your choice.
SGS2 is also good.
I think it greatly depends on how soon you want to change your phone. April - May is the time when a lot of the phone companies start rolling out their latest phones. If you are looking at last generation, I would say either the Sensation XE or the Galaxy SII. As far as i know, both of them have been upgraded to ICS.
HTC has a pretty good interface with their Sense, but it tends not to be very optimized, and it is common to suffer from an exceptionally short battery life (perhaps one day with minimal to moderate use).
On the other hand, the Galaxy SII is hardware wise quite a beast, and AMOLED screen is impressive. I have issues with the design of touchwiz and the physical button at the bottom of the phone annoys me. Other than that, it has quite the battery life, so it evens out.
looking at this gen, the HTC one x is very powerful, and is meant to be HTC's flagship phone, so i'm curious why no one mentioned it. besides that, Asus entered the market with the padfone, which seems to have potential, but we have to wait and see if it will be as good as they claim. last is the samsung galaxy SIII. my vote is to wait till samsung announces its new flagship phone (rumored to be 22 may), and then decide from there.
Since you are in xda developers, i'm assuming you are not very interested in the interface anyway so just go for the one with the best computing power, and best battery.
if you are going for wp7 phones, just wait for lumia 900. the 800 looks rather sad.
of course there's always the iphone 4s or the iphone 5 if you are willing to wait till september.

I think it greatly depends on how soon you want to change your phone. April - May is the time when a lot of the phone companies start rolling out their latest phones. I was actually thinking about getting the Sensation XE or the Galazy S2. HTC devices seem to have a lack of battery life which is why I'm leaning more towards the S2. As for the new gen of phones the only one I am really interested in is the HTC One S. As much as I would like a quad core processor in my phone, it may be very battery consuming. Not interested in iOS or WP7 so that rules those phones out. Guess I will wait untill the One S is released to see the price of the phone in comparison to the S2
HTC One X, not quite out yet, but it is incredible.
Love the HTC Sensation XE <3
Skyrocket
I love my Galaxy 2II Skyrocket, fastest and best phone I've owned in years. Flashed sky ice to it and its absolutely unbeatable.
