[Q] Which phone to buy - General Questions and Answers

Hello guys,
I am new here. I wanted to buy an android phone which should be under 15k (can increase the budget to 16 or 17k). I have shortlisted Motorola DEFY primarily because of its looks. I would browse the internet take pics, play games, and experiment with it (developing stuff, OC,installing custom ROMs etc) apart from the normal things. Please tell me if I have chosen the correct one if not please suggest me one.
P.S I am from India.
and yes I saw this somewhere "GPU is weaker than all of the above phones, so future games (even some current games) may lag, SAR rating (not important IMO), no more updates after Froyo." is it really a down?

i think the better fhone for your use is LG o2x. This phone have boot free and is very good to play games.

Budget!!
it for more than 20k here!

what bout the htc evo 4g

The thunderbolt.....
Sent from my HTC Bliss using XDA Premium App

HTC EVO is for more than 25k and and I couldn't find a quote for HTC thunderbolt
And yes guys Rs15k is equal to about $320

How about the Huawei Ideos X5 (U8800). Similar hardware to Desire Z, without the keyboard obviously. Should fit in your price range. I got mine for under $200.

huawei? bad customer support and off-course brand value
But leaving that I got this from gsmarena
"a. bad cpu. b. no radio. c. bad touchscreen. d. bad battery life. e. bad signal reception. f. bad service coverage. Still if you want to buy it then go for it !!"
Is is better than Motorola Defy?

Lol, read again, he/she is replying about the Dell XCD to the post below, some dude claiming it is the same phone. Which it is no where close.
Anyway, you can compare here.
CPU, RAM, memory etc the same, except no keyboard.

Are you sure that it is a better phone than Defy?
I asked a friend (because I am a noob) about the Huawei and Defy he said defy is better because more development (software-ROMs) and better GPU which is very useful for playing games as I could wait for loading but cannot wait and get good quality while playing games.

He is probably right then, I'm sorry I don't have a Defy to compare with
Also check if you can what lens the defy has. I know some can do 720p video recording and some cannot, but maybe better to check out the defy forum section.
Edit: By the way, the SE Xperia Play also uses the adreno 205 GPU

No offense xmsnx.
know of any good phone in the price range?
Btw SE Xperia Play is almost double my budget.

I meant, the same gpu is in the Ideos X5, so it must good enough
Anyway if I was you, I would visit a store and try out some phones first if possible.
But good luck, hope you get the best phone you can

Thank you very much

Any one else wants to share their views?

Ehem, what about SGS (scl version is cheaper than amoled) idk how does it costs actually, but I think it can fit you

If I were you I will buy SGS (still good for games), DHD (the same) or Xperia Play (exclusive games and this nice control sticks). Motorola Defy is not good for games if you are looking on this 3 smartphones .

I have the original Droid Incredible - got it the day it was released and absolutely love it, but it is getting close to the time when I am going to upgrade. Would like to stay away from Motorola, but pretty much open to other brands. Very happy with HTC, but Samsung would be a close 2nd. Anyone know of a phone with similar width to the original Incredible? I really like what I have read about Galaxy S2, Sensation SE & Vigor. Must be on Verizon and would prefer the smaller width, but I have a feeling these sizes may be a thing of the past. Anyone know of a more narrow phone than above mentioned that would still perform about the same?

Guys, Guys, his budget as he stated is 15k INR which is about US$310. And here in India the prices also are (little) higher that the US or EU. So, in India the Defy costs abot US$300 and the Galaxy SLCD version costs US$365 and they basically have the same TI OMAP 3630, but the SGS LCD is clocked at 1Ghz while Defy is clocked at 800Mhz.
And in this budget the closest things up and down are the Galaxy Ace(US$287) and the Galaxy SLCD at the moment, and Galaxy Ace is crap. But I would refrain from buying a Moto.

SGS , DHD and Xperia Play all of them are above budget for me. My dad is very particular about the budget he is getting me a 15k phone only after so much of pleading.

[Q] GSM Android phone with Keyboard

I Currently use the HTC Touch Pro 2, but i want to change to Android.
i've done my research but i can't find a good GSM Android phone with a Keyboard.
Can I please get some help in the matter?
Thank you
Alejandro
Are you looking for high end mid range or cheap?
Hey, thanks for answering, I'm looking for the best I can get.
Now I have the HTC touch pro 2
the HTC Desire Z? Coming soon, was announced the other day !
HTC Desire Z or, if you absolutely can't wait, Motorla Milestone
Htc desire Z (Out october) or The motorola Milestone 2 (Out this month so dont get the first one )
UHm... thank you!!!
now question, why wait for the HTC when the motorola is available now and has 1000mhz processor instead of 800?
it seems like a better deal, what am i not seeing?
I guess Motorola quality and support is less than HTC's is

although the desire z is only 800mhz it uses the 2nd generation of quallcomm snapdragon technology, its said to be nearly twice as fast as the standard desire that also has a 1000mhz cpu, it also has a much improved gpu over the first generation of snapdragon
Ok then, I decided to go now with the Motorola MIlestone 2, but can't find it anywhere to buy!!! just this random website that was selling it for 699 dollars...
any thoughts?
It isn't released yet It's coming soon
Expansys
Clove £350
Assuming of course your buying from the UK. As already said, its not out yet.
Its a real shame though as in my opinion, the Samsung Galaxy S PRO is the daddy but there are some serious issues with the non-keyboard Galaxy S. I hope that when (if) the Pro S gets released here these are resolved. The Samsung Galaxy S seems to be rated as far superiour GFX and processor on many websites compared to the current range of HTC and still rate just slightly above the Motorola and the new to be launched Z and Desire HD. Its important to note though that these "people" are only guessing and comparing against what they think the new chips will do so it could be inaccurate - until a device is really launched, no one of us can really tell its true performance (hardware alone does not do this).
Like you, i'm in desperate need of a Qwerty phone and sadly, there seems to be no real phone for me. I want a 4+ inch screen with ALL the bells and whistles and am happy to pay for it!
I keep searching in vain .... I think the nearest so far *MAY* be the Dell Lightining..... maybe...
edit: sorry, forgot to say that the Dell is WP7. Android still doesn't support Exchange properly (DYOR, im fed up with explaining). Having said that, I keep reading that WP7 will offer full Exchange support but until its released, won't truley know.
In my experience, do not rush into buying hardwares. Unless your rich that is. Just wait a couple of days after the release and read the reviews or go play with the thing first hand.
On that note, you should probably get a Desire Z.
Sooooooooo I see the Desire Z is already on Ebay, any ideas when the milestone 2 will be?
I want to buy this phone Asap, all the reviews and info seem to point at the Milestone like the better choice

(Advice please) Samsung Galaxy Mini OR Motorola BackFlip OR SE Xperia X10 Mini

Hello,
I'm not very keen on starting this kind of thread, but comparative information is pretty scarce on the internet.
I'm planning on getting my girlfriend an Android phone soon and I'm stuck between these 3 models due to my budget:
1. Sony-Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini
2. Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570
3. Motorola BackFlip
The Xperia was what she originally saw and liked, but in my opinion its not very good. The Samsung appears to be the safest bet, and the Motorola is something i've just seen 10 minutes ago and seems very good on paper (hardware-wise) but that screen seems too small and the keypad is not something she (or i) would like very much. Plus that flip mechanism i'm sure will not last very long.
Now i turn to you, the community, for opinions. I'm a bit stuck between these. Any input would be great!
Thanks!

Thank you for your reply. I know about Optimus One and it is superior to those 3 that i've mentioned. Unfortunately it's $35 US more expensive than my budget (my budget being what those 3 cost). This is a spontaneous decision and there is not a lot of money to be spent. She doesnt care that much about the technical side but she would enjoy the apps and everything and i could certainly help her discover more about Android. She prefers the smaller devices as well. So no optimus one.
I might just end up with the samsung. Im still not sure.

My wife has a backflip, I got it for her in July and its been durable but broken a few otterbox cases (just the front piece). The best rom has been cyanogen mod 7.1 even tho it frequently freezes it has performed way better than the stock 1.5 & 2.1 that Motorola provides. If a good phone is above your budget, just spend the extra lil bit. It'll be worth it in the end.

What do you think of this?

Hello guys, I'm buying a new phone for under £150 and I found this, It's an Orange branded phone but they will be an unlocking and de-branding method out soon, there always is, but here are the specs- what do you think?
TFT, 800 x 480 pixels WVGA resolution, 262K colors, 3.5 inch touchscreen
5MP Camera with autofocus and flash (and a 0.3 MP front camera- not 100% positive but it says video calling on specs along with something that looks very much like a front camera)
ARM11 800MHZ processor
Running on Android Gingerbread 2.3
512 MB internal memory (according to Orange- most of that will be filled with useless Orange-related junk)
3G and WIFI (Obviously, pretty standard nowadays)
All of this for only £99 + £10 top up on Pay As You Go.
You could easily replace the original Orange themed launcher to ADW and make it look like a normal, and custom rom's will be arriving very soon.
What are your views? I'm not too good when it comes to phone specs but they look good value for money. I have question though- will this support multi-touch?
I'm personally thinking of picking this up to replace my Galaxy 5.
i had the same query!!
but inverted
so lets talk for htc hd2 : i am thinking of bying a no name phone with the same phone specs as the hd2.
the Question is : may i this noname phone to make it work as the HD2 phone?
If money is a problem, get the cheaper phone- same specs but cheaper? You may as well, but if you care about having a big company name on your device then obviously just settle with the HTC, also make sure you read up a lot about the no-name phone just incase it has bad reviews.
Anyone got any comments/views regarding my questions?
Anybody have any views please?
Its the ZTE-Blade II the specs aren't much different than original model, I owned original and for the price there ok "very cheap made devices" soon after picked up HTC DHD as it was sluggish can't imagine the II being much different.....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
great phone!
where can i finh it?
My friend does have the ZTE blade, the first one. it was sluggish while he was running froyo but speedy with gingerbread, even thus it has a 600mhz processor.
With a 800mhz ARM11 for that price I would give it a go.
Thanks, can you verify that it has a front camera?
And you can buy it from any Orange store or there website, you get free headphones worth £60 along with other freebies as part of the Christmas box.

Is this the phone that you are talking about?
http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phones/san-francisco-II-from-orange-in-black
If not, Could you provide a link?
Otherwise the specs are a little different from what you wrote, the cpu is not ARM 11, its ARMv 6, but it does have front facing camera:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=3224&c=orange_san_francisco_ii_zte_crescent
Yes thats the phone, I read on a website it had am Arm11- knew that was too good to be true.
Do you think this phone is worth a purchase to replace my Galaxy5? I want a larger phone at a low price so it seems a good upgrade as it has better camera, a front camera, it's on gingerbread and a better processor, thank you.
Sent from my GT-I5500 using XDA App
Also would you recommend this phone or the Samsung Galaxy Ace? Thanks
Sent from my GT-I5500 using XDA App
Well, to be honest I would't buy a phone with an ARMv 6, but its obviously my opinion depends what do you need it for.
Yes, it does have larger screen than your Galaxy 5 and it's cheap.
But.....have you tried to look for some better USED phones like HTC Desire and so on?
You can find something for 150 Pounds/Euro and so on:
http://uk.webuy.com/phones/search_results.php?manuId=9&stext=desire
EDIT: Galaxy Ace seems a good phone to me, more or less the same as the ZTE:
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_ace_s5830-3724.php
I don't want to buy second hand, is the ZTE worth a purchase? Or should I pay an extra £35 and buy the Galaxy Ace?
Thanks
Sent from my GT-I5500 using XDA App
Again, depends what you will do with it.
If I really have to go for one of those two, I would choose the ZTE it has higher resolution 480x800 (320 x 480 ACE), and much more ram 512 (against 280 of ACE) which at the end of the day its VERY important.
Thanks for your help, It is much appreciated, I'm going to get the ZTE, it's cheaper and has better resolution, ram and a front camera.
Thanks a lot, have a nice day!

[Q] Need a new Smartphone for $300.

I have an old Samsung dumbphone and I want to upgrade. My budget is <=$300 and I'd prefer Android over other OSes. I don't live in the US, so, I have no ISP preference and will only buy unlocked phones.
So, what's the best phone for ~$300?
Get Xperia phones like Neo V. You might have to add a few dollars but it's worth it.
yea the neo v looks pretty good, might go for it. Thanks
the HTC Desire S is a good phone with a aluminium body. costs about 270€
support from devs is very good!!
The Desire S is about 280 on handtec, about the same as the Xperia.
The Motorola DEFY Plus is about 190, pretty good price IMO but what about the phone itself? Is it any good?
Visit the Chinese online shops (like Tinydeal for examle). There's a great selection of phones and you may well meet your budget.
Get the SE Xperia Arc S,really good phone it has 512mb ram, 1.4ghz single core processor, [email protected], adreno 205, android 2.3 upgradable to 4.0

I don't want generic chinese phones because I don't think they have good support in terms of software. I'd rather go with a famous brand and get regular software patches and general support.
Phone under $300
Hi,
You can have HTC Wildfire its cost is under $300. Its a very good design phone with all great features. Specifications- 5Mega pixel camera autofocus and LED Flash, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 3G, WiFi, GPS with A-GPS support and many more great features.
You can try optimus 2x . I think you can find one under 300. Its dual core. If can't chech about captivate...

Recommend a phone

I currently have a Motorola Atrix, and while I love some of the features (led flash, fingerprint scanner, speed...), I'm fed up with waiting for moto to release updates, and the battery life is too short for me (I can't compare it to other smartphones thou, and I hear in general it's quite good, and mine is about average I would say, but I make heavy use of it and have a really long day). Also, I feel like it's "too powerful" for my needs: while I do multitask, browse the web, etc a lot, I almost don't game at all (maybe ~10 minutes of fruit ninja every other day). I imagine a lot of battery drain is going into powering the CPU/GPU, of which I almost don't use the GPU, and the CPU I could probably do with less. It also isn't very good at maintaining a HSPA/HSPA+ connection, which results in lost messages, etc.
So can anyone recommend a phone (if it exists) that:
Can be bought for <$300
Has as good or better battery life than the Atrix
Is GSM & quad band (or at lest 1900MHz + 850MHz)
Has a good community -no offense ment to Atrix devs, moto is the problem- behind it & tends to get frequent updates (ex, Nexus, Galaxys, etc)
Sorry if I'm asking for something that doesn't exist...
Battery life can be increased with power profiles, if you want stock to stock though, the atrix is pretty strong in the power category, the only other phone that might beat it is the gaming sony xperia play, otherwise I would recommend getting an HTC one X
Samsung galaxy S2
looking at everything v need samsung galaxy S2 brings everything.. battery life is gud.. performance is great.. but litle expensive but its worth.. for a reference of phones providing good battery backup check gsmarena.com site.. u could find all phones there with detailed specs and info u need.. i suggest if u luk into performance and gaming , with good hardware specs and battery backup..samsung phones will surely help..
if u dont lik samsung lik i do, then sony is another choice..but battery back up is a big issue..for sony..
in the matter of fast updates samsung does real good ahead indeed..
I prefer for you either HTC One X or Samsung Galaxy S3

/facepalm Is that even cheap?
I recommend ZTE U970 or MEIZU M9. If you can get at your local,Xiaomi Mione Plus is also a better choice at the price about $300.
Others maybe to expensive.
You can pick up a used GS2 for under $300 right now. A good ROM/Kernal combo will get you a solid days worth of battery life.
Personally I'd get the Samsung S3 and if needed upgrade it myself by rooting it. But if you want really fast updates without rooting your phone and not have to wait for the manufacturer to customise the ROM before releasing it on their phones, you'd be better off with a Galaxy Nexus phone. They're comparable, except the S3 has better battery life and Quad core CPU whereas the Nexus only has Dual Core.
Keep in mind with older hardware the Nexus may not see many updates anyway. I'd say the Nexus should be able to cope with Jellybean and I'd guess the next version after that would run O.K. based on previous experience (i.e. I'm running a rooted ICS ROM on an old HTC Desire... Admittedly it is slow and I don't have all features. This phone came out with Froyo and lasted 2 full versions after that). All the best with your choice. Hopefully this will help
i like the samsung s3

This, SGS3 & One X are way too expensive, and the SGS2 isn't much better than my Atrix (as far as I know). The chinese market only phones sound good, but they're chinese market only, lol...

Well those are the best Android devices on AT&T lmao.
It really depends on wether you are willing to root your device and wether you are willing to go on contract.
If willing to root and willing to go on contract:
Galaxy Nexus / Galaxy SIII
If not will to root and willing to go on contract:
Galaxy Nexus
If not willing to root and not willing to go on contract:
Nexus S
If willing to root and not willing to go on contract:
Galaxy SII or one of the variants.
The only that can solve all of your problem is...... NOKIA 3310 xD
All jokes aside, I have a Sony Xperia Pro and with a little changes, my battery phone work for 2 or 3 days, air plane mode only from 2 am to 8 am and always wifi or 3G, and a lot of app in background.
