Any news on the HTC Ace guys? - General Topics

Hey guys,we've all been hearing and seeing things about the upcoming HTC Ace(along with Schubert with Windows Phone 7),right?Well,we know that it will be similar to the Evo/Leo,will also be known as Desire HD,and will look stunningly cool. However,I am lacking the knowledge of any details.
I heard somewhere that it will be sporting a more powerful GPU that the current Snapdragon devices. Is this confirmed? Also, will its CPU be anyhow better than the current Snapdragons?Because I am between this and the Galaxy S.But I love HTC's phones, interface etc and would be ok if it was just a little more powerful than my Desire. If it's just the bigger screen(which will most probably not be AMOLED) and better camera(I think it will have 8MPx like the Evo[?]) it's not worth it.
So what do you guys think?

They are holding a press event on 15th Sept. So hopefully it will be announced then.
My guess is it will be exactly the same as the Evo except the radio.

Well,if that's the case it's a pity that such a nice device will be gone to waste...I mean,by September/October the new Snapdragons with dual-core processors will be just out of the corner! Why make a phone that can't have the latest and greatest?

I hope the Ace will be available in the US.
I like some of the high-end Android phones but I am on a GSM carrier, so that leaves me with the lackluster options of the Samsung Galaxy S (which I don't really like at the moment) and the Nexus One.
There are 4 amazing Droid phones that I would love to get my hands on, but they are all on Verizon. What is up with that?

At least you are in the US pal!If you change carriers you can get all awesome phones available! But I live in Europe, and more specifically in Greece! What about us here dude?We too are stuck with either Galaxy S and Desire.

*** gloat post ***
I live in the UK and we get pretty much everything all the time. Only thing we lack behind is 4g but I know O2 are testing this in Slough at the moment and reporting speeds of 150meg if rumours are to be believed.
I've even heard in another thread that we will be getting WinPhone 7 before the US should you decide to jump to it....

I know what you mean, but I highly doubt they can produce the new dual-core or the 1.5GHz ones en masse by Xmas...
And a Snapdragon is still an extremely nice upgrade for those of us still on a 576MHz device

HTC 600 mhz+ phones

Hi, I have a quick question to ask. I bought my touch pro (1) last year and I was looking at all the nice new phones HTC is coming out with. I was honestly thinking about getting the HTC Diamond 2 or the HTC Hero, but looking through the specs, I see that they all have 528 MHZ processors. That is literally no improvement over my touch pro, which also has a 528 mhz, and chances are, there wont be much of an improvement over what I have.
I think I am going to wait it out until an HTC phone comes out that is 600 mhz or more.
I know of the HTC Leo (Firestone), which is a concept phone and I don't even know if this phone will ever move into production. Does anyone know of any other HTC phones that are bound to come up that have at least 600 mhz of processor? Also, maybe even a quality camera that is at least 5 mp will be nice too.
Yeah, wait till the end of the year great 600+mhz devices will be anounced!
I´m tented to do the same!
I have alreadymy 700Euro saved to buy my new device, initially I was going for touch pro 2 but decided to wait till december to make the right choice.
I was looking at the touch pro 2 but one thing I didn't like about it was its bulkiness. It seems pretty thick in the pictures, thats why I was looking at TD 2. But as soon as I see something that is 600 mhz, I'm gonna look into buying it. the SnapDragon processors for smartphones must be really expensive when they come out. Perhaps in the $1000s for an unlocked :-\.

Doubtful.
All new smartphones seem to cost $700-$800 unlocked regardless of specs. As of right now, you can preorder the Toshiba TG01 (which has a Snapdragon) for $800.
By the time it actually arrives, my guess is that it would be in the $700 range. If you want to get it now, though, you'll have to import it.

Actually Toshiba is already available in Europe, and importing will depend on where are you located
I really like HTC phones. I really hope they release a nice snapdragon that is in my price range by march of next year :-\

Guyz if you want faster phone... then the year is 2010... AMD and Samsung also announced another chip which can clock up to 1000mhz (Hummingbird) like snapdragon on Toshiba G1. and windows mobile 7 is on the corner ... and my HTC Universal also has 528mhz processor which was released in 2005 ... so i think waiting until 2010 is best choice.....
Completly agree.
But wm7 is not around the corner, I donñt think we see it before september 2010

WinMo 7 sounds great and, hopefully, HTC will also finally update their specs in 2010 (but if not, I suppose Samsung will continue to have the best specs).
Nonetheless, while the Hummingbird sounds great, it's supposedly just an overclocked Cortex A8 with a modified architecture. Isn't the much better Nvidia Tegra also supposed to be release in 2010? It would probably pay off to wait for that instead.
.
(How do you delete a post?)
lol.
So many 1ghz phones in such a small window.
I really hope HTC pulls through and actually makes something decent.
This is what I"m hoping to find:
1-smoother processor
2-ease of use (typing, web surfing, etc.)
3-long battery life
4-nice productivity features
5-improved TF3D that has been revamped to be more "scheduling" friendly
The following two have the lowest priority, however, I wouldn't mind if these features were included
6-A nice camera with good picture quality (5mp, hopefully)
7-a good 3D accelerator that will allow for nice graphic games as well as HD movies
Hopefully all this on a 3.2-4" screen., although I don't know how huge a 4" screen will be
Does anyone have any info on the HTC Firestone?

My friend, I reiterate, check out Toshiba TG01. Coincidentally, that phone also has a 4.1in screen. Link: http://www.gsmarena.com/toshiba_tg01-2662.php
On the other hand, I don't think a phone screen needs to be that large to improve readability. I think a 3.5-3.7in screen would do fine.

[Q] GSM Android phone with Keyboard

I Currently use the HTC Touch Pro 2, but i want to change to Android.
i've done my research but i can't find a good GSM Android phone with a Keyboard.
Can I please get some help in the matter?
Thank you
Alejandro
Are you looking for high end mid range or cheap?
Hey, thanks for answering, I'm looking for the best I can get.
Now I have the HTC touch pro 2
the HTC Desire Z? Coming soon, was announced the other day !
HTC Desire Z or, if you absolutely can't wait, Motorla Milestone
Htc desire Z (Out october) or The motorola Milestone 2 (Out this month so dont get the first one )
UHm... thank you!!!
now question, why wait for the HTC when the motorola is available now and has 1000mhz processor instead of 800?
it seems like a better deal, what am i not seeing?
I guess Motorola quality and support is less than HTC's is

although the desire z is only 800mhz it uses the 2nd generation of quallcomm snapdragon technology, its said to be nearly twice as fast as the standard desire that also has a 1000mhz cpu, it also has a much improved gpu over the first generation of snapdragon
Ok then, I decided to go now with the Motorola MIlestone 2, but can't find it anywhere to buy!!! just this random website that was selling it for 699 dollars...
any thoughts?
It isn't released yet It's coming soon

Assuming of course your buying from the UK. As already said, its not out yet.
Its a real shame though as in my opinion, the Samsung Galaxy S PRO is the daddy but there are some serious issues with the non-keyboard Galaxy S. I hope that when (if) the Pro S gets released here these are resolved. The Samsung Galaxy S seems to be rated as far superiour GFX and processor on many websites compared to the current range of HTC and still rate just slightly above the Motorola and the new to be launched Z and Desire HD. Its important to note though that these "people" are only guessing and comparing against what they think the new chips will do so it could be inaccurate - until a device is really launched, no one of us can really tell its true performance (hardware alone does not do this).
Like you, i'm in desperate need of a Qwerty phone and sadly, there seems to be no real phone for me. I want a 4+ inch screen with ALL the bells and whistles and am happy to pay for it!
I keep searching in vain .... I think the nearest so far *MAY* be the Dell Lightining..... maybe...
edit: sorry, forgot to say that the Dell is WP7. Android still doesn't support Exchange properly (DYOR, im fed up with explaining). Having said that, I keep reading that WP7 will offer full Exchange support but until its released, won't truley know.
In my experience, do not rush into buying hardwares. Unless your rich that is. Just wait a couple of days after the release and read the reviews or go play with the thing first hand.
On that note, you should probably get a Desire Z.
Sooooooooo I see the Desire Z is already on Ebay, any ideas when the milestone 2 will be?
I want to buy this phone Asap, all the reviews and info seem to point at the Milestone like the better choice

Nexus S questions

Trying to weigh my options with cell service. AT&T has been bothering me lately with dropped calls, down service etc. Really looking for a new phone (currently testing the Atrix).
I have seen some people claiming they got a 2700+ on Quadrant with this phone... is this true? How do live wallpapers run on this phone? I love having the latest and greatest software, so the Atrix might not be the best choice.
Anyone have both phones to give a comparison etc? Any comments in regards to T-Mobile service?
Thanks!
The Atrix, or any of the dual core phones coming, will most likely blow the Nexus S out of the water in terms of perfrmance, especially when they have an OS buiot to work with the two cores. That being said, this thing is flying with the latest update, at least for me. The graphics are just as good as any of the other Galaxy S phones, which aren't slouches in any way. Coming from AT&T, I will say that while AT&T has more penetration in terms of 3G where I live, T-Mobile has way better speeds, I've been up to 7mbs in places close to where I live. Then again, I go anywhere coastal and I have to live on Edge while I'm down there. So just depends on your area and who's better in terms of network.
Never used AT&T so I wouldn't know but I never really have any compliants with T-Mobile. 2700+ Quadrant, yeah its possible. Quadrant benchmarks (or benchmarks) don't really mean anything to be honest.
Live Wallpapers run fine, although I don't use it.
With a Google Experience phone, you'll always have the latest updates including kernels open sourced as soon as possible.
And to be honest, the Atrix and all those other dual core phones are most likely being crippled by the custom Android skin. So it wouldn't be worth it if you want the best possible experience as a enthusiast.

@charlieb620, thanks for the link for that video, that was a really good comparision. I guess that shows that there really is a difference between Froyo and Gingerbread. I'm not knocking the Nexus in any way but when the Atrix and the rest of the Duals get better software, they will be amazing. I am surprised by the screen of the Atrix though.

The truth is that until those dual core phones have Honeycomb or Ice Cream they will not perform as well as single core phones optimized for modern OS' like Gingerbread. Hell, they'll probably start to do a bit better once they have Gingerbread but it still won't beat the Nexus S.
I do find it funny that the Nexus S was supposed to have a dual core but that got axed because Gingerbread doesn't "support" dual core processors, yet all these dual core phones are shipping with Froyo. I guess that for at least a year, we can take solace in the fact that we own one of the better Android devices for the time being.

Thats sort of the idea. I mean, the same could be said of the Nexus One; it was the best phone when it came out but not long after bigger, better, faster phones came out. Sure, when dual core phones get future iterations of Android we'll be behind the curve but by that point there will be a new Nexus at which point I'll have sold my Nexus S for the Nexus New

This roud of android phones...

Im unsure which phone to get, I was wanting the atrix but I know moto's locked bootloader causing problems and hate moto blur so maybe the lg x2...but then the samsung galaxy s2 looks better. What about hardware, which is beter orion with mali or tegra?
I also liked the idea of the webtop on the atrix, but that bootloader would mean no custom roms?
What about dev support etc?
Edit - With the ipad2 wiping the floor with tegra 2 (meaning the iphone 5 will have a similar setup) ...are these phones doa hardware wise?
for now it seems like next round with similar performance of soc's will be apple a5 , qualcomm with adreno220 , and samsung orion when they get proper drivers . im not familiar with the texas instruments front but im sure they'll have something sooner or later . that said tegra 2 is a great deal behind all of these .
I'm not sure about the dev community for each phone but I'd pick the Atrix if AT&T ever unlocks the full speed it can go.

I wanted to atrix originally (dual core, 1gb of ram! nice!) but I loved the idea of webtop...now I hear people have replaced webtop with ubuntu! Which would mean we could use not only firefox, but utorrent, nzbs etc! But, like I said before, the locked bootloader is a *****. Which, might be the reason a lot of chefs from xda (and I hear cyanogen) is getting the lg x2.
But i think da_g has an atrix, no love for sam gs2?

Ah sorry, I misread your post. I knew sammy made apples a4 chips, so their hummingbird was essentially the same except for a few minor tweaks and changes. However, is this the same this time round, with orion and a5? The orion has a two a9 cores, with a quadcore mali 400 gpu, apple has decided to stick with PowerVR and opted for a dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU.
I wonder which will come out on top? Too early to tell?
here is a some stuff on the galaxy s2
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4177/samsungs-galaxy-s-ii-preliminary-performance-mali400-benchmarked
i dont think its on a final unit or running 100% yet (on the GLBenchmark Egypt, a single core hummingbird beats the dual core orion). Im sure the flash thing will also be resolved at launch.

with those two and the new snapdragon , id say they will be close enuff to let you choose by other features and personal brand preference
Yeah, I heard the new htc pyramid has the new 1.2GHz dual-core snapdragon which is paired with the Adreno 220 GPU (as as the ipad2)...anandtech benchmarked a similar spec'd phone here:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4243/...rmance-1-5-ghz-msm8660-adreo-220-benchmarks/3
It comes out on top, but again this could be down to the samsung gs2 not being a final unit? Who knows...but I will be upgrading soon and want to make sure I get the best possible upgrade (will no doubt have to get it over 24months )
that new htc has just been accouned at the htc event in london today!

It's getting ridiculous at this point. The entire Exynos vs snapdragon crap and the HTC Fanboys are over old. New and important information is one thing but my peepee is bigger than your peepee is stupid.
Yet in the UK we're being given the inferior Qualcomm S4 because the Exynos doesn't support 4G. Annoying since only one carrier has 4G and it's in very very few areas.
Quit your belly achin'! At least you get a superior GPU!
I will buy octa for sure!
Faster CPU 8 cores so you can modify them all by custom kernel + Samsung says that it saves power! + better GPU
but if it not available in my country so I have to use SD600

It's actually looking like the enhanced Adreno 320 is better right now. Of course Exynos wins in CPU though. GPU is more important to me though, and the S600 CPU will also run anything right now fluently, Exynos is overkill IMO and good for bragging rights but in day to day use, not much else.

Surely you don't believe that marketing bull****. Samsung cannot enough make enough Exynos chips until Q2 but wanted to release earlier to stay competitive, it's that simple. I wouldn't be surprised if they phase out the Snapdragon's by Autumn.

I doubt it'll work that way. Don't forget that the Note III will be in production relatively soon and the S5 by this time next year (or sooner), so why would Samsung waste resources on producing more Exynos S4s when they can soon start offering the Note III and S5 with the Exynos processors in full production? Especially when 99% of the initial S4 owners / buyers won't notice or care about what's in the phone anyway as long as it works.
First world problems:
Do you guys think it's worth waiting for the note 3? Considering a better processor, battery life, bigger screen, and the S-Pen? (I'm pretty sure I won't use the S-Pen much, but we'll see..) Also rumors today of a possible "better quality" material..?
I believe it'll be $100 more than the S4..but are those features worth $100 more?
When would the Note 3 be released?

I'm buying it unlocked and running it on T-Mobile.

If you wait for the next best thing to come out you will always be waiting. When the Note3 is released, something even better will be in the making and when that is released, something better than it will be on its way...
