Hey all,
As you may have seen elsewhere, we've been working pretty hard to bring you unrEVOked 3.2 with out-of-the-box, one-click support for all Android versions on the GSM and CDMA desires.
Available for Linux, Mac, and Windows:
http://www.unrevoked.com/recovery/
Please start by visiting the help page and reading it through:
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3
1. Windows users MUST install the HBOOT drivers for this to work:
http://www.unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php?id=public:windows_hboot_driver_install
2. Windows users need to uninstall HTC Sync or any other program that might talk to the phone over USB (doubletwist, etc). Disabling HTC Sync from the system tray is not enough. They interfere with the root process and will cause problems.
3. When asked for USB connection type, select "Charge Only" and "Remember this".
Special thanks to Sebastian Krahmer for the rageagainstthecage exploit.
oh my god, can't wait...
Thanks! I will wait for a new masterpiece.

It's working flawlessly on our testing devices, but we are releasing it for a quick round of testing before distributing it more widely. If you are interested in helping us test, please join me in #unrevokedtest on freenode.net.
I'll replace the content here with the links to the updated tool once we've finished testing.

will this make UK Desire (i think they gsm) S-OFF?
Woot! I got root! (and s-off)
It's live now!
Only CDMA Desire is being made S-OFF it has always been easier for CDMA models to be hacked due to radio differences
v3.2:
* Added support for Froyo builds on all supported devices (thanks to Sebastian Krahmer)
* Added support for the CDMA Desire
* Optionally disables security on supported CDMA devices
no mention of gsm desire

GSM Desire should be able to root the OTA (HBOOT 0.92) without downgrade. Although only us CDMAs have S-OFF (Not that I care much, I just want some ROMs now, lol)

Is this safe to use on the CDMA version. Basically can someone with a USCC branded phone confirm that it works?
so, HBOOT 0.92 is supported by revoked already?

Nope. Only doing an actually wipe/flashing a new ROM will do that. Do a backup in recovery after you have rooted if you're worried.
I tried this 3.2 on my rooted desire UK version.
It failed phone got stuck when it said waiting for root, i just had HTC logo screen.

Doesn't matter which HBOOT you use now, a hack was found for ADB, so basically every device is susceptible at the moment.
Will the S-OFF coming for our GSM Desire Owner, too?
as unrevoked announced s-off for gsm desire soon after 3.2 release: http://twitter.com/unrevoked/status/23085304999
if we apply now unrevoked, can we reapply it when s-off will be available, or what? better to wait a little bit? can root be done on an already rooted device? thanks

That is so eazy
Might be a silly question, but if you pre-root it, will I still need to root my handset to install it. Or can i install this and I'll be rooted?
No the device has to be rooted first and the ROM has to contain su.
Adam, I assume you have tried this rom, did you notice anything different or new?
Hboot will still be upgraded to 0.80 if I flash the pre-rooted 1.22 rom, right?
Edit: Anyone knows what does H3G stands for?

No I removed HBOOT and the radio, and yes the H3G stands for Hutchison 3G.

Very Nice! I have Hboot 0.80 since Delivery but nice for the other =)
my desire has hboot 0.83 BUT has a amoled screen, so do i follow these instructions but use the clockwork mod version included in unrevoked?
You can use the one from UnrEVOked but it's an old build. Use this one: http://koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-bravo.img
You can use the same recovery image (the one in this thread) for both.
Yeah, unrevoked3 works fine on mine with the updated image. It also means there's no reason to downgrade to hboot 0.80 for SLCD phones.
Great news!!
Nothing to stop me from rooting now.
Just a quick question though - what about ROM flashing? Do I need to wait for ROMs specifically built for this screen?
I got a black screen on step 5 when downgrading from 0.92. Left it 5 minutes, pressed vol up to reboot, it did but then error 140!
Do I still need a goldcard if I'm rooting 0.83 branded?
Also what's the situation with installing custom Froyo ROMS on this? Do the screens still work?
Thanks
THL
Works PERFECT! Thanks
Can anyone confirm that this works for the Telus branded Desire? Gold card required?
If it can be rooted will probably get it this week for the girlfriend...

You don't need a goldcard to root the phone with unrevoked3, nor do you need a goldcard to apply a custom ROM.
You can successfully flash a rooted official FroYo image with radio on an SLCD desire (I have tried, it works), just make sure you do a backup first.
I used this rom:
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-froyo-pre-rooted-no-hboot-with-radio-deodex/
I was thinking of making an update.zip for ClockworkMod which includes HBOOT 0.83. Could somebody make one? I would then edit the tutorial so the root process for 0.92 would be easier.
Can anyone confirm this works on a Vodafone Desire with HBOOT 0.83 and 1.24.161.3. ROM?
Worked well for Telus SLCD Desire.
Note: with Windows 7, I needed an additional adb driver file that I found as a download in androidforums Google: "adb-driver-problem-flashing-generic-htc-rom". (I can't post links here.)

I really hope that this is the case. Any luck with froyo roms?
I don't own an MT4G or Panache, but I started this thread for the inevitable arrival of Mobilicity & Videotron customers who would like to mod an HTC Panache. Once the MyTouch 4G Gingerbread update came out, it was found that the Fre3vo root exploit (originally found for the Sensation/Evo 3D) will also temp-root this phone. To get S-OFF you have to roll back to an old Froyo MT4G firmware - from there you can roll back forward to anything you want.
Differences between MT4G Gingerbread and Panache for the purpose of this thread:
- Panache requires a gold card because the ROM you roll back to comes from a different carrier.
- Your preferences in terms of what ROM to put on your phone after S-OFF may be different from T-Mobile customers - ergo, discuss here if this is an issue.

There is someone else here on the forum who flashed the entire firmware of the Panache onto his MT4G and was unable to re-root with Gingerbreak even for temp root. Fortunately the user in question had Radio S-OFF so was eventually able to fix it. But this hints that Gingerbreak won't work.

Thanks for clarifying. Of course you had S-OFF and the Mobi/Vtron Panache comes S-ON. So this leaves an open question of what is the first step to root the Panache.

Could you explain all the steps you took to achieve this on the Panache?
I just read your thread and it looks like you actually had a MT4G running the Panache ROM. But was your phone already S-OFF? If so, that'd probably explain why Gingerbreak worked. Not sure that'd fly on a factory Installed Panache.

Yes it was s-off, but another user who did that could'nt root though he also was s-off
Sent from my HTC Panache using XDA App
I see. So it's still not clear what will or won't work with a factory S-ON Panache.
It's reported that Gingerbreak does not work with S-ON Panache, but what's unclear is whether it can still be used to achieve temp root. If it can, this suggests a way to force it to an earlier T-Mo RUU which will permit the use of the S-OFF kernel exploit.
as far i know, both are same hardware and you dont need s-off to use factory RUU. thus if i can use panache RUU regardless of s-off i can flash mytouch 4g RUU on panache.

You need at the very least temproot to edit the "misc" partition before flashing an older version bootloader RUU, otherwise it will reject it. Since it is not yet established that temproot works on factory S-ON Panache, there is no established way to downgrade the RUU. So there is still no clear pathway yet.
If you say so though I still think u dont need any sort of root for official RUU.exe
Sent from my HTC Panache using XDA App
An official RUU will fail, even with a gold card, if it's an older version than the current bootloader. All MT4G official firmwares are older than the Panache's. The only way around this is a root hack.

The impact will be that it will update this phone to gingerbread. Neat, huh?
Now if you're talking rootability, how would we know until it's released? I won't take a chance. I think the update for the dhd is unrootable. When put on a stock phone, you're hosed.
For custom roms? I'm sure it'll be a good thing.
agreed. i don't think the inspire will ever get an unlocked rom direct from htc and especially not from at&t. if your interested (like i am) in a stock rom based on gingerbread wait for a developer to release a rooted version of the at&t update coming in august.
i just wish htc would add sense 3.0 to the coming rom, but i don't imagine that will ever happen either. thank goodness for the developers on here to make our phones what they could be from htc.
There's a new exploit, Fre3vo, that should work on the forthcoming Inspire GB update unless HTC patches it at the last minute which is not likely (it's already in the pipeline).

I queried you with this on the other thread, but it looks like it's getting buried. From what I have seen, this just gives a temp root and doesn't break the nand security. I was wondering if perhaps you had seen some info I hadn't come across that indicated otherwise.

You need temproot to change the version information. From there (with a goldcard), you can downgrade the ROM to the version that can be used with gfree to get S-OFF. Once you've got S-OFF you're home free!
Basically it's the same method as before, but using fre3vo instead of psneuter or rage (psneuter and rage exploits have been patched in latest HTC RUUs).

Well, most any rooting procedure needs to get temproot at some point in the process. Fre3vo works on a lot of HTC GB RUUs, but I'm not sure if it works on other brands. The workings are still a closely guarded secret for now.
These are flashable zips that will change your baseband (radio firmware). Google it See twistedxx's post quoted below if you have no idea what this means. If you have an HTC One X (Tegra 3) you're in the wrong place.
twistedddx said:
Radio = firmware
RIL(radio interface layer) = driver
Android = operating system
All 3 are "programs" that are running at different "levels", I have listed them from top to bottom in the order typically considered for how they interact. It is important to understand that a program is just code and how they interact is a philosophy programmers created and are now use to and not because it has to be set out that way.
In the case of the RIL, the API rarely/never changes so it is rarely/never updated.
The actual changes HTC make happen in the "Radio" program.
This is opposite to how say Windows/Nvidia tackle things. The firmware rarely/never changes and they make their changes in the "driver".
In Nvidia's case they do this because there is no standard way in x86BIOS/Windows for GPU firmware to be loaded from something as simple as the installed HDD, the firmware is actually written to chips on the card itself. It is just simpler to make all the code that gets changed inside the "driver" which is easily updated.
For our phones "radio" its trivial for the changes in code to happen at the "driver" level or the "firmware" level, HTC/Google decided they would stick changes in the "firmware". They did this because they created a separate partition for the radio so that they can protect it separately to the OS. Android typically means the phones OS should be open for tweaking, so it must be assumed the driver could easily be replaced.
Countries and Carriers have licensed spectrum to protect and transmitters must be licensed to use it, running custom radio code would break laws in many countries. This leads to the radio firmware being protected much more heavily than the OS itself.
It is because HTC is lazy and because we have awesome devs that we can replace the radio firmware at all. As far as HTC, Country communication regulators and carriers are concerned the user should NEVER be altering the radio software.
Radio:
radio(fancy code stuff) <-> ril(boring translator) <-> Android OS
Nvidia:
firmware(advanced fixed code that allows for flexible access) <-> driver(fancy code stuff and translator) <-> Windows
Note:
Radio is about wireless communications
Nvidia is about graphics processings. They are not similar technologies just some tech you may be familiar with.
PS. API = application programming interface.. and lets just say if you do not understand what that is.. I cant be arsed trying to explain that, go Google it.

If you're on the newer HBOOT (1.14) and insist on running a Sense based ROM use the Jet tool to downgrade to 1.09. This will allow you to write to the radio partition of the phone. Or just S-OFF (w00t!)
If you're running a CM 10.x ROM it doesn't matter what HBOOT you're on as the radio firmware is stored elsewhere (in a writable partition... /system to be precise).
Instructions:
1) Copy zip file to SD Card
2) Boot into Recovery (CWM or TWRP)
3) Flash
4) Reboot
Always take a Nandroid Backup in case something goes screwy!
Your bootloader will not show the correct baseband. I'm working on figuring out how the RUU updater handles the android_info.txt in the firmware.zip's

I think over in the S=OFF Thread they've thrown around a few theories, I dont think any of them involved the radio partition.
The take away from this is that we've been able to flash images to partitions we didnt think we could without S=OFF (kernel, radio) so it might be a relatively moot point to achieve it. As far as ROM Development is concerned anyhow.
I think... could totally be wrong about all of that, though. =)
This is amazing man thank you!!

OK Folks, this is a CWM/TWRP Flashable zip to bring you back onto the Stock Rodgers Radio (Radio_0.16a.32.09.06). I'll add Asia and ATT versions if there's a demand for it (You can also just replace the radio.img file in the zip with whatever radio you want to flash).
Instructions:
1) Copy zip file to SD Card
2) Boot into Recovery
3) Flash
4) Reboot
Always take a Nandroid Backup in case something goes screwy!

great man. I'm on 1.73 ATT, any risk with flashing radio from either 1.82 or 1.85 ?
Do we have the ability to flash radios from the One S or does it have to be a S4 One X??

This will most likely result in a brick

First off thank you for this, I have been wanting my default rogers radio since upgrading to at&t 1.85 RUU. I have been questioning if there Is any difference in reception on my device.
Now, Please don't take this the wrong way, I am not trying to sound like an as!, but Rogers Canada does not have a "d" in Rogers. Again I realize this is a little petty, but I felt the point should at least be raised. Again, I am more then grateful that you have done this. Thanks again.

Why are you so adamant on achieving S-OFF now that were bootloader unlocked and we can flash full ROMS with the ability to flash the boot.img and flash the radios from within recovery there is absolutely nothing more that you need except for HTC to release the source. Once HTC releases the Source we can start getting custom kernels and AOSP ROMS can get moving.
Can someone post the ATT 1.73 radio ?
am uploading the ones for 1.82 and 1.85 now (it'll take a while)
