[Q] App for asking phone it's GPS location? - Android Apps and Games

Hello,
Is there an app available whereby you can ask your phone for it's GPS location?
OR
Is there an app whereby you can send your phone a message (a special text for example) that then automatically turns GPS on & when a GPS fix is calcualted it then sends a message (a text message again for example) back to you with its GPS location.
I'm thinking that if my phone went missing or got stolen I could find out where it is.
Andy

And you haven't searched, clearly. There are many threads, many relevant results on the Market, etc.

Clearly! Indeed, just spotted this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756590
Apologies, LARGE forum.

Call log on today screen

I've just into using Pocketbreeze and am finding very good so far..its working flawlessly on the exec. Just wondering if theres an application that gives u your recent calls whether missed or made on the today screen so that I can have it as a tab within Pocketbreeze. I've tried Phone Dashboard and a few others but they all open a the relevant application to view the calls. Was wnting something that would just show the calls on the today screen itself. Thanks for any help

I've tried DKToday but really wanted a calls list on the today screen rather than just a missed call etc...but thanks for the link.

Well, this is one, but I can't seem to get it to work on my Sprint CDMA Apache (6700).. it's looking for a SIM card, so that tells me it's GSM only.
If any of you kind folks would like to rev-eng it for CDMA, I'll supply, seeings how I already wasted my money on it.

Problems with TomTom Navigator 6 on Polaris

I have had several problems with TomTom Navigator 6 (installed from HTC Touch Cruise CD). Using USA/Canada complete map purchased from TomTom.
History
1. The "Turn on sound" setting in Change Preferences does not stay set to on. Every time I start TomTom, the sound is turned off.
2. After a destination has been selected, the voice directions are incomplete. TomTom will say "After 100 yards..." rather than "After 100 yards, turn right". TomTom NEVER indicates what direction to turn in advance of the turn. It will tell you which direction to turn when you are at the point of turning, but never in advance.
3. I have a problem when selecting a contact as the destination. Click "Navigate to..." then "Contact", then scroll through my contacts and make a selection. In the vast majority of cases, Navigate to returns the address with the street number AFTER the street name rather than before it.
Thus TomTom returns:
Main Steet 134, Bryn Mawr
The address given for this contact can't be understood. Would you like to enter the address yourself?
All of my contacts are synced from Outlook/Exchange and are all set up correctly. This bug renders the Navigate to Contact fetaure useless.
First follow-Up
I finally got around to call TomTom regarding these problems and I am not happy with their response!
According to TomTom, the HTC Touch Cruise is not on their supported list. That's correct folks, not supported. Doesn't matter that it comes packaged with the TC, it's not supported. Blame HTC (they say) for including the license with an unsupported device.
The technician suggested that I downgrade to Navigator 6 V6.030 which supposedly addresses my issues. I did the downgrade and determined that:
1. The sound setting still is not maintained. In fact, it now required that I press Turn on Sound twice for this feature to work.
2. I am still not getting the complete voice response, only "After 1/8 mile..." No turn left or turn right. TomTom said I should reformat my memory card and reinstall app and maps and that MIGHT help. Well, I'm, not going to go through all of that unless I know it will work, too many other things on the memory card to deal with.
3. Navigate to.. Contacts now actually seems to work! But the ironic thing is that TomTom told me that the Navigate to... Contacts feature is ENTIRELY UNSUPPORTED even though it is in their software! They claim it was never completed and therefore not supported.
This is absurd. The hardware is not supported by the software that it was bundled with, and the software itself has features that are not even supported by the developer.
Second follow-Up
I uninstalled and reinstalled TomTom 6.032 from the CD. Also uninstalled and reinstalled the maps.
1. Default sound setting seems to have been fixed.
2. Still have the problem with incomplete audio directions ("In 1/8 mile...)
3. Navigate to Contacts also seems to be working though not tested extensively.
Am I the only user with this TomTom oddity? Why on earth will it not state the entire direction? TomTom has been no help, anyone here have any ideas?
I cannot say this for the US/Canada maps but for the Benelux/Western Europe maps, the directions are OK and I don't encounter your problem.
I'm using the default Dutch voice in version 6.032.
Try a hard reset and install tomtom again on the clean rom, see what happens with that.
German maps work fine, too. I'm using Lisa (as a speaker , who is more or less Tom Tom default I believe.
Sound settings are kept correctly.
Version 6.032
I don't have any problems with TomTom either.
IF you want to try some other voices, you could drop me a PM and we'll "arrange" so you can get them from me (got a package of many different voices)

I was preparing to hard reset my TC (last resort) when I figured that there was nothing to lose by changing the voice. I did, and it worked! Never would occur to me that the voice selection would have any impact on this problem.
But, unfortunately, the problem with keeoing the default sound setting has returned. Each time I start TomTom, the sound is off. ARGH!
Anyway, thank you for steering me in the right direction. Hopefully this one issue is now put to bed.
Nice to be able to help
maybe you could be so kind reading my thread and answer it? (since it seems i'm the only one in this forum that actually owns a TC *cough cough*)

I get exactly the same problem with the sound. I have an XDA Orbit II, sound in TomTom always off, have to keep changing it, removed it, I use Co-Pilot and Navigon now, both are great.
RE: Sound problem
I have the same problem with the sound and it was bugging the hell out of me too. Speaking to a friend of mine who has the same problem, apparently it is due to a known bug in the current TomTom release: If you have a data connection open when you start TomTom, it thinks you are in the middle of a voice call and mutes the sound. My friend also informed me that there should be a new release from TomTom soon that addresses the issue. I don't have any links but there may well be another thread somewhere on this forum about it if you search.
The sound on my TomTom will occassionally turns itself off and requires it to be turned on TWICE to work again. I think its a known bug. The problem used to be worse on my P3600/Trinity.
Update- from the kaiser forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330235
It's a bug, you have to switch off the data connection before starting TomTom.
SIMPLE FIX: Roll the volume wheel and sound turns on.

might also work on the Trinity?

Sure? Rumour has it on GPS-specific forums that TomTom are not actively working on updating Nav6 (for PDAs) because its too much like hard work; much more revenue in (simpiler) dedicated units which are more stable

Interesting. Prior to launching TomTom, I used Comm Manager to turn off the data connection. When TT launched, sound is indeed on! When sound is off as a result of an active data connection), using the volume slider on the TC does not turn the sound on. Seems like the only way it to go to settings and select Sound On twice.
Hopefully TomTom will correct this bug. May also try downgrading to 6.030 to see if that works but I don't know what features I'd be losing (if any).

[Q] Sometimes don't receive sms

Hi I have Samsung Omnia running WM6.5. Sometimes the phone instead of receiving an sms only turn on the backlight, but the sms is not received. I have to manually type : #35*barring code*16#[SEND] like turning down sms barrier, but I didn't turn this barrier on, ever. After that the sms is immediately received I only discovered it randomly. If I don't do that, sms wont be received. I have like 3000+ sms in my phone so, maybe this is creating difficulties for WM to handle them. I want to find a way how solve this problem without deleting all sms.
Any idea ? Thx

I remember awhile back there was a phone (Samsung Impression) that would receive a certain number of messages and then it not take anymore. AT&T blamed Samsung and it was a software issue.
My point is that this is not indicative of ANDROID but a long time Samsung problem if my memory serves me correctly
Google it is all over the place

Hmm, your problem rings a few bells, but I concur with Kent.

Chromecast: Device shows background pic, but no "Ready to Cast" (previously working)

Chromecast: Device shows background pic, but no "Ready to Cast" (previously working)
Hi folks
I'm not sure if I've picked the right forum. I'm not hacking my Chromecast, and couldn't find a non-hacking section. Mods, please feel free to move it somewhere more appropriate if necessary. Also, I've tried searching, but this is a tricky one to find appropriate keywords for!
Background: I'm in the UK, and I have two ChromeCast devices (sent to me by colleagues in the US, before imports were available over here), both of which have previously been set up and working fine.
However, one of them has stopped working (I'm not sure when, as I haven't tried to use it for a few weeks or more).
The symptoms are that it boots up, going through the Chromecast and Chrome splash screens. It then displays a series of background photos (as I would expect - I'm guessing they're cached), but
the white light on the dongle is flashing constantly,
the TV never shows any text (Ready to Cast, etc.), and
my devices (and the ChromeCast setup app) can't find it.
The other one is still working fine (and this one used to), so I don't believe it's a networking problem.
Can anybody help? Does this sound like a hardware problem? And is there anything I can do to try to troubleshoot?
Thanks
Julie

[Q] [AVD 4.1.2 - DarkMoon] - Are this issues expected?

Hello,
Can't post on developer forum since I am rookie and system doesn't allow me to post there, so I have to post it here.
I installed AVD 4.1.2 on my Zperia J (JLO) one week ago and took it for a spin for the past 7 days. However I found a few issues that do bug me and don't seem acceptable for a ROM that is so well reviewed.
I believe there is something wrong with my configuration so, please help me in case this is a mistake on my side:
1) GPS can't track... keeps looking and looking but can't fixate satelites.
2) GPS icon on notification bar, while tracking, keeping alternating with Bluetooth icon..
3) Google maps dont open if GPS is not finished with tracking.. Since I cant get it to track satelites, the only way to open google maps is to turn off GPS
4) Keyboard is missing the closing parantesis ")", so no smiles for anyone.. only frowns
5) Cannot turn off data comunication on shortcut from notification panel
6) Doesn't sinc my mail "with the native android app", despite being set in the application settings to sinc every 5 minutes
Is it me doing anything wrong or are these known issues of the ROM?
If these are known issues I'll have to roll back.. I do need the GPS very much....
Thanks
