Is anyone having any better luck with the "double flip" activation method for the latest version of Google's gesture search app? I've gotten it to work once for me in about a hundred attempts, on the "easy to trigger" sensitivity setting.
It does not work for me either or my brother who also has a Captivate.
Nope ive only gotten it to work maybe twice out of 20 attempts on an EVO

The trick is that it is using the mag sensor. So hold the phone perpendicular to the floor,
like a door facing north-south, then "open and close" the door quickly. If you are holding
it like you normally hold a phone, the "flip" won't be detected.

My compass is messed up. (I.E. Points in the wrong direction, jerks around when I rotate it) I can fix it temporarily by waving the phone around in a figure 8 pattern, but this only lasts for the current instance of an app.
I've had these problems after I installed MoDaCo's custom rom. (Though I am now running fresh 5d.)
Is there any way to make this fix "stick"? (Or is there some other more permanent solution?)
Did you calibrate the G-Sensor?
It's hidden under "Settings", "Sound & display"... all the way at the bottom.
I'm having the same issue, except mine was happening before I was root and before Modaco...
Hard resetting it would restore the compass to normal for a few days, then it would go fishy again.
Its doing it now with root and modaco 1.2c unofficial...
I'm really confused. Haven't heard other people complain, but not alot of people use their compass.

The accelerometer is completely different from the compass.
The digital compass (magnetometer) measures the earth's magnetic field, while the "g sensor" (or accelerometer) measures gravitational pulls on different axis.
Accelerometers use a quartz crystal mounted between a fixed point and a free floating mass. The mass puts pressure on the crystal and generates a tiny voltage (some work on resistance or capacitance change). As the direction of gravity's pull changes, so does the force of the crystal and the signal it generates. Most accelerometers are designed to sense movement in only one direction, so true 3D position sensing must use three crystals mounted in different orientations each with their own floating mass.

Wow! Thank you, Captain Obvious!
I mention the G-sensor calibration because I had an issue with a compass-related program that did not work properly until I calibrated the g-sensor. If he tries it and it works, great... if not, no big loss.
YOU'RE WELCOME, DOUCHEBAG.
How the hell am I supposed to know what your intelligence level is. You're not the only one reading posts. Someone else may find that information relevant or helpful.
BACK ON SUBJECT.
So I tried my compass again and after shaking it it was still messing up. For ****s and giggles I tapped the corner on my desk a few good times. Not hard, but solid smacks and voila... it works now. Weird.
Such Hostility!
Not sure why tapping would have worked, the magentic sensor has no moving parts as far as I have been able to read on them. Don't live at the north pole do you?
You should try to install the Metal Detector app and see if it gives you issues, it uses the same sensor and maybe its a hardware issue. Given it is not the most accurate as far as detection, but it does really work if you put a piece of metal right behind the phone.
Watch out with those belt holsters with magnetic locks. Those will screw up your compass fast. Not sure if thats your situation but just FYI.

Very good point, I hadn't though about that, especially since there is no telling really where that sensor lives on the board, and they are usually pretty strong little magnets in the holsters
Well... I tried recalibrating the g-sensor for kicks, but that didn't help. I've never used a magnetic holster, so I don't think that's it...
Any other ideas?
Does compass work in Google Maps????
I have see the commercials and youtube videos..
that show in google maps...
in street view...
you can move the phone around and up and down...
the street view.. will change according to your orientation
so if the Hero has a Compass
and we have google maps
why don't this feature work for me?
Or.. does this mean my Sprint Hero.. does not support this function at this time???
FYI...
Brand new hero (got it on 12/30/09)
Rooted
MoDaCo 1.3 ROM

It has to be enabled in Maps first. And you have to be in street view mode (obviously :X)

I have looked.. and can not find any place that lets me enable this feature... inside google maps.
My compass was acting similarly a while back. Not sure when it changed, but now that I have rooted and installed Fresh, it's working fine. Strange.

Hi,
I have found 3 mornings in a row that when the phone is in my pocket and I walk to work its clearly trying to turn itself on, as when I pull it out the phone is in suspend mode and says I can't unlock it for 15 mins. It must be responding to sensors or the power button isn't strong enough to avoid accidental presses.
It says "fingerprint suspended try again in x minutes". The pin entry is non responsive during this time so its clearly a security lock which is being triggered by false movements.
Its a pita and clearly shouldn't be occurring. I've never had the problem before with any other phone.
Any ideas as a workaround or solution?
thanks
Could it be you are accidentally touching the fingerprint sensor while walking? In smart assistance settings there is an option to disable touch while device is in your pocket. Have you tried turning this on?
Those are the only tips that come to mind, tried it with my mate9 but cannot seem to reproduce this.

Hi guys, even if the setting has been enabled on my Mate 9, the phone still try to open itself when I'm walking around.
Do you know if I can turn off the reset function after 10 failed password?
Honestly, this is getting so annoying that I'm thinking about changing phone again...
Thank you!
Vince
I got rather used to double-tapping the screen on my prior phones to either wake up or turn off the screen. I cannot find that feature within the Moto G7 Power Android 9 Pie configuration / setup. Looking around, this feature seems to be available in Android Pie generally.
What am I missing?
It's not a native feature. We're you using an LG phone? You can get it back if you use Nova launcher. At least for screen off, won't work for screen on.
As stated above, knock on is a feature of LG phones.
As an alternative, look for WaveUp on the play store. Open source app that turns in the wave feature not included in the G7.
Not as nice as the knock on, but one you get used to basically touching the proximity sensor, it works the same.

It should become a moto gesture, that'd be EPIC.
LG even make a fridge with a knock-on light so you can see what drinks you've got in the door.
Sorry, nothing useful to add! It's not a native feature of pie, however.
Tap your screen to semi-wake so lockscreen clock (if set) will appear then scroll up from bottom of screen and pin input appears. Proximity sensor seems poor so many taps may be needed.
Wouldn't the Face Unlock be much easier and prevent the need for a double tap? Of course it wouldn't work in dark areas. Things like these I think they implement because it might be better or easier
If someone makes a custom kernel and adds DTTW then your in like flin.
Had anyone experienced their device being unlocked while in their pocket. Mine had several times, even some quick toggles have been changed from where I had them set. Apps opened, not just opened but digging into multiple button presses. Even today mi wife says I called her twice while phone in pocket. I use fingerprint security with pin backup and somehow phone is bypassing both of theses in my pocket. I've tried numerous times to replicate out of my pocket with no avail. I'm on stock TMobile no mods or rooted.

It happened many times for me.. you might be having Smart Lock enabled... even then, proximity sensor on OnePlus 7 Pro isn't good.. but disabling smart Lock should fix your issue

Weird. Do you have fingerprint lock enabled?
Yes I do. From what I can find on the web previous OnePlus devices had a Pocket Mode which is not present on the 7 pro. But viewing T-Mobiles website under settings list it shows it is in the utilities section under settings. But not on my phone. I even searched for it with the search option at the top of settings menu.
I've also noticed that in settings under utilities there is a section called app locker, when I click on it, it asks for pin and then just resorts back to the utilities menu giving me no option to add apps to list. It does nothing.

What Pocket Mode did (I had it on my 3T) was ignore screen touches, if the proximity sensor sensed an object nearby (assuming it was your pocket).
Even without Pocket Mode, a press on the screen, or movement of the gyro should only turn on the "ambient display" screen. You can't do anything from that screen except scan your fingerprint (which you confirmed you have fingerprint security enabled). So I'm puzzled how the butt dials or other things occurred in your pocket.
I suppose it's possible the power button is being accidentally pressed in your pants. Which brings up the lock screen - slightly different from the ambient display screen, as it gives access to the quick toggles, camera and voice assist. But it would seem like a strange combination of accidental power button pressing and screen touches happening in your pants, to make the things you mentioned happen. TWSS

Got this very message this evening along with flight mode being activated. Pocket mode badly needs to be reintroduced by OnePlus
Can anyone who has converted to international firmware confirm that pocket mode is or is not present in the settings under utilities?

I'm using Motorola phones now for years and got
used to the Moto Display to show messages and emails without turning on the phone
and turning the flashlight on with the two chopping motions or Twist the wrist twice quickly to open the camera anytime.
But the motos are getting bigger and bigger, so I was looking for something more compact and found the Pixel 4a.
Is there a chance to have theses moto features on a Pixel?

Also a long time moto user. Displaying emails/messages on the lock screen is a native Android (not Moto) security feature that you can toggle on/off. Pixel 4a camera can be launched via double click of power button, similar to many other phones. Double chop flashlight toggle is a Moto specific action; I do miss that. At present I'm engaging flashlight by swiping down notifications and tapping the flashlight quick action icon...even when locked. Seems easy enough.

There's already lots of those options for the 2xl depending on which ROM you use. Too bad the 4a didn't get active edge. It's a nice feature if you remember to use it.

OnePlus has a screen off gesture setting (draw a V on the screen) which was excellent. I'm looking for Magisk or EdXposed module that would use a gesture for flashlight but haven't seen anything.
This might work:

has anyone tried this?

Tried that... can't get it to work. It is able to detect my double twist, I can feel the vibration, but then camera won't launch (I set the action to launch camera). Apart from that, it is hard to get it to detect the gesture, compared to the smoothness on Motorola phones (I have had quite a few!)
My last phone is HTC U11, which has edge sense, so easy to launch the camera and taking photos with squeeze.
Now on Pixel 4a, I am making myself to get used to the power button double tab to launch cam, and volume button to take photos. Not as smooth but doable...
Is it maybe possible to install moto action from the apk-file on a Pixel?
