[Q] Want to Upgrade from Nexus One, Is Captivate Ready for Primetime ? - Captivate General

Hi,
Just wanted to get some feedback from knowledgeable peeps around
My contract is up and was wondering if its a wise decision to switch from my utterly delightful Nexus One to more powerful Samsung Captivate
I like the flexibility and freedom to play around on my Nexus One, but the Super AMOLED and Faster GPU has been calling me to Samsung Captivate.
All the 2 cents are welcome.
Cheers

I believe the CPU and RAM are similar in both devices (1GHz and 512 MB respectively). Considering that the Nexus One seems to be Google's "official" Android development device, I would stick to that until something substantially superior comes out.
On a side note, I think you're going to miss the notification light on the Nexus One.

Thanks for the response, Yes, Notification lights are awesome..

There is an app floating around here that uses a red dot on the screen as an LED indicator.
if you do decide to take that step, get one from amazon. Theyre selling for 49.99 with a 2 year.
im not too sure if it will work with an upgrade, but it never hurts to find out.

If I was to go back a couple of week in time, I'd wait until the GPS issue was fixed and the Froyo build was out from Samsung before taking the plunge on the Captivate. I am still thinking of returning my Captivate and going back to my sucky Blackberry until I can get a phone that I am not apologizing about by saying things like "it's better than the iPhone, but the GPS does not work and no, it isn't have the latest software but it definitely can make phone calls!". I'd wait on the Captivate.

Do not go back to your blackberry man! They are sooo boring. I could not wait to jump ship. I am kind of sad I am selling my bb 9700 though (GPS actually worked lol). Good times suing bbm. oh well I got android now and it the business.
If you really feel like going back to blackberry would you really be happy with their stale os?

Not yet man. Not til we get 2.2 IMO. I'd stick with the N1 for now. Don't get me wrong a few months from now galaxy s phones will be the new hot ****. But I don't think enough people have gotten their hands on them yet. No where near as many roms out there. GPS sucks a ****. Ahh hell, just get one.

Oh, it would be my old BB that I was using before I got my Captivate so I'll just be waiting very impatiently for the GPS fix and Froyo so I can come back! I'm a developer and have been mucking with the Android code to see if I could find/fix the GPS issues and port to Froyo myself but no luck yet. I am never going back to anything but Android - just need my first Android phone to actually work. I never actually use GPS except in a pinch when I am walking in the city but I need it to work at those times!
But for someone new, and who is not a developer - waiting on the Captivate is a good idea. Hopefully the fixes will come soon - I am just a little afraid that the GPS might be a hardware issue since the Galaxy S has been out for months and it has the same problems.

Yeah I am in the same boat with the gps issues. I do not really use it but I would love for it to work as flawlessly as it did on my Bold 9700. I am trying to get into the developer scene but I find it kind of hard. I have used linux before and know some basic coding in C,C++, and python but I just do not know how to start.
Anyways off topic. If you're on the boat about this phone get and if you do not like it return it before the 30 days are up. Blame it on the ****ty gps if it has not been fixed by then and you might get the restocking fee waived.

JUST DO IT.
I got it. What else are you going to upgrade to? I have a n1 but wanted a new toy. The captivate is awesome. Sure gps may suck if you really need one. I have gps in all my cars so don't care for it. But having new technology is cool. At&t has nothing better. What u gonna get the iphone? Lol. I bought two of them on my upgrade for my parents line and sold that ***** for 600 each. So for 50 dollars i get it. BUT don't get rid of n1. I still use it everyday. Its my main phone. Captivate is a play phone. I flashed it bricked it returned it mod it and brick it again and exchanged it. I exchanged it about five times already. Lol one store told me they will charge me resgocking charge on next return so i just went to another store down the street. Lol. I spent 100 bucks but literally got it free when i sold the icrap. Also saved the money for the htc desire hd/ace. It will come around. But not sure if it will be better then captivate. Once froyo or maybe gingerbread cones to captivate, i prob be selling my n1. MAYBE? I don't know if i ever will. Its only six month old. I say it will be good til android 4.0 comes out. Til then i prob keep the n1. So get it. Play with it, but keep the n1.

Captivate kills the n1.. I've go both... gps isnt broke completely . I use it daily ... not too shabby, but could be a little better...

GPS would be nice if it worked for everybody , it seems so random sometimes it works sometimes not so much

You will def miss the trackball notifications. That's one big gripe of mine. I also miss the rock solid GPS, pix with geotagging that works (w/ out having to have gps turned on), the cm mods, some of the stock apps (especially the stock calendar app), and how much it frickin flies in general when compared to the captivate. I still have my N1 and will probably be returning the captivate unless they get the gps shizz fixed. I do quite like the captivate's potential tho. Just needs some attention from the (very awesome) devs. I may buy it again sometime down the road.
If you don't mind paying the $35 restocking fee for returning it before the 30 days, it's worth playing around with it.

You'll be in for a shocker when you switch.. there isn't much ROM development going on (yet) That's why I still have my N1

Cappy dilemma

OK, I've had my Captivate for 3 weeks now and while I really like it, I have a major decision to make before my window to return it closes. Coming from a WinMo Tilt 2 I was somewhat put off by it not being as easy to mod, but I can live with that. I bought it mainly because of Samsung's promise to upgrade it to Froyo. Looks like that was a mistake. I'm willing to root it to remove the bloat and allow sideloading, but I haven't yet felt comfortable to think about a custom ROM. Not sure I ever will as it is much different from doing the same on a WinMo phone. The biggest gripe I have, though, is the GPS performance. I've had both ends of the spectrum as far as getting locks with different programs, insode and outside, and lost lock several times while navigating in the car, both here in Cali and in Florida. I mountain bike and use my phone to track my rides, so GPS is important to me. My Tilt worked excellently in that regard.
So, do I keep it and just learn to live with it, even though it looks like AT$T will have some really nice Android offerings in the near future, or do I cut my losses (about $100 worth of Cappy accessories I already purchased) and return it before my 30 days are up? I like the form factor, the performance, the way it plays my converted movies and all the apps available for it, but the crappy GPS and dismal battery life are really starting to bug me. What say you, XDA community?
Honestly I'd just bite the bullet & return it. Using Phoenix rom you could have great GPS but there's really gonna be some better **** coming out. That's what ID do.

Return it, and stick to old phone. There are couple of good phones lined up to be released within the end of first quarter '11.
sure would miss an active member who knows what he's talking about in the captivate sub
I just seen in yahoos homepage about att new phones announced at the CES show, check it out, the one that has my interest is the"samsung infuse 4g" search to see photos if it, looks like captivate but bigger, I know why samsung or att hasn't released 2.2 because looks like they just moved on. Features include: 4.5 inch super omled screen, 8mp camera with 1.3mp front having camera, 1.2 ghz hummingbird processor, 2.2 froyo upgradeable to 2.3 "so they say unless they just move on again with a new phone" up to a 48gb sd card. And running hspda or 3g+, but att is calling this 4g. I have this on my cappy now with doc v7 rom now and it is faster than 3g.
I would just wait, they also announced others, check the site.
Sent from my CAPPY using Xda app!
Thanks for the input, guys. Well, I decided to keep the Cappy. Here's why: I only paid $49 for it on upgrade. The newer batch of Android phones will not see that kind of pricing for at least 6 months, likely longer. I spoke to an AT$T rep and she assured me that they are committed to providing the promised Froyo update ASAP. No time frame, but it will happen. My biggest complaint is with the GPS and I have done some things to improve it, at least outdoors, so I think I can live with it for my mountain bike excursions. I rarely use it for in-car navigation. Was more of a novelty while I was visiting Florida over the holidays.
So, thanks again to all that responded and XDA in general. I'm going to root my Cappy and remove the bloat in the next few days. Oh, and my 1800mah battery came yesterday and I'm currently conditioning it to see if it has any benefit over stock. Will post in that thread.
Return it. I wish i had... They promised me the Froyo update asap back in august when i bought the phone. i made a HUGE mistake buying this phone. i HATE AT&T

Flash a Froyo ROM and apply Da_G's GPS fix (if it's not built in to the ROM). You won't regret it.
Actually, if you wait a day or so, you'll be able to flash a bone-stock Captivate Froyo ROM from Rogers.
I just can't go back to my Tilt 2. I loved that phone, but it feels like a dinosaur, now. What if I do wipe the Cappy and return it? When I get another Android phone would I be able to download all my paid apps from Market without having to repurchase them? Is Market activity phone or user specific?

When I lost my Captivate on the Haul road and was sent a new one, all my paid apps popped up in the Market ready for installation as soon as I'd set up my Google account. So I think you're right.
It astonishes me how many people bought this phone based on the promise of Froyo. It's not like Froyo is so much better than Eclair, and it's not like the phone is a worthless POS without Froyo.

Which is why I'm willing to keep it. I am always amazed at the people who get so bummed when a new phone comes out as if it rendered their current phone inoperative. You're right that Froyo isn't a big deal, but a better working GPS and Flash support are desirable features. Samsung and AT$T just need to follow through on their promise of the update. If they don't, I'll still be happy with the phone, but it will definitely be the last Samsung product I'll buy. I stopped buying their HDTVs when the last one took a dump and I couldn't get warranty service.
You could also exchange it for a new one based on the poor GPS performance. I mean if it doesn't work right, they should exchange it with no questios asked right? Since it seems that the GPS issue is hit and miss with these phone, you may get one that works good right out of the box.
I went to the warranty center this past weekend and exchanged my Captivate for another one because of the GPS and a couple of shutdowns over the last 2 1/2 mos and the replacement I got has much improved GPS.
I've actually got my GPS dialed in and working pretty well right now.
Should have returned it. At&t has been bs'ing us on the froyo update since Google announced it. I'm enjoying my Phoenix rom but I wish I had the real deal. I'll be buying the motorolla with that duel core when it drops

Glad to hear that.
I would keep it considering how much you got it for. I mean, $49 is a good deal for this phone even with its issues. When I got mine, I paid the same for a refurb.
Hope I can sell my captivate for a decent price and upgrade to the new motorola or htc phone relatively cheaply. I love this phone, but I hate it at the same time. Will be nice to not have to worry about lagfixes, scetchy gps, and updates that take damn near forever. Main thing I will miss is of course the samoled screen.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yea good luck with trying to sell it... at least here on XDA.
Might be luckier if you eBay/Craigs List it and hope some poor sap is willing to pay for it.
The whole Galaxy S line has a horrible reputation now - even the Nexus S!
I was hoping to trade for an AT&T Nexus... but A) they wouldn't take it as a trade and B) they wanted cash to go along with it.
Meh - I'll be keeping this phone till it pukes and then upgrade when the year comes up. At this point I don't care if AT&T ever releases a true Froyo update.

Captivate Replacement... With What?

So basically... I'm wondering what maybe some of the Captivate users are looking at getting.
I'm on my fourth Cappy. Now the speaker stopped working on it (Just the headphone jack works for sound now).
Pissed at this phone, honestly.
I'm going to see if I can talk AT&T into letting me get a different phone, on the basis of this being a lemon.
Any suggestions?

If I had to replace my phone right now the Inspire is the one I would get. It's really a nice phone and has a lot of developer support.
I bought an inspire off-contract to replace my captivate... it's pretty nice. I would recommend it.

My speaker stopped working twice and had a new one put in warranty. Third time it happened I just tapped on the speaker and it came back on and now I keep a lil peace of paper inside right below the speaker to keep a lil pressure on the connections. Been working great

Press the speaker usually works.
I'm done with the Captivate, in other words. Too many issues with it.
Custom ROMs are the only reason I've hung on this long.
Would you not consider the Atrix or (shudder), Jailbroken iPhone 4? The Inspire's battery is so small.
My main thing- is I think I'll sorely miss the Super AMOLED. The next phone with AMOLED is looking to be the Infuse, and who knows when that comes out.
I've tried replacing my captivate but imo there is nothing out that compares yet.
I started with an inspire but took it back 3 times due to poor screen. Then tried an atrix but mine was junk. I had it for 2 weeks which for half of that time it was in it's box on the fridge while I went back to my trusty old captivate.
I think no matter what I end up buying eventually I will still keep my captivate as a backup just in case.
If I were you I would try to get another one, I've had not a single issue with mine other than the gps crap. Get another captivate and wait for something better to come out than the crap that att is pushing now. The inspire is an old design and the atrix was released too soon in my opinion.

Its so sad that ATT doesnt have much options in smart phone section. Still the best android phones are inspire, atrix and captivate....
I own a captivate and i am very happy with it...but when atrix was launched i thought wow dual core will be so nice...my room mate got it...and i am so happy i didnt just jump on it....the first thing is screen...nothing can replace SAMOLED....other thing was I saw Atrix hanging, where as my custom rommed captivate was running smoothly...Atrix has that locked bootloader issues..
Sorry I'm on wrong forum but got a friend whose captivate wont turn on its dead not rooted.

Wow I've had my Captivate since 3 days before official release and it still works perfectly.
Honestly I'm waiting to see if T-Mobile and AT&T merge, that way when I get my upgrade (In August) I can hopefully buy the sidekick 4g... But that's depending on so many circumstances, plus samsung is making it. *gags*
Design Gears dumped the Atrix, eh? That isn't too reassuring, lol.
Infuse is out based on the battery life.
It looks like the only option is the iPhone 4..... 3.5" display... Not as much power under the hood as my Captivate, either...
Hmmm, I've got some decisions.
I guess I could always sell said iPhone 4 in 6 months when the GS II comes out or something. Apple fans are always willing to buy.

The merger is a year out. That's already in black and white ink. In other words, they won't even start the process, until a year from now. Which means it'll be at least, 2-3 years before customers see the benefit.
Just learned in this thread DG returned his Atrix... Checked the signiture it's true
Maybe should wait for a while, there are many phones coming to AT&T this year.

From what I've been reading, all Tmobile bands will be switched to ATTs bands so the radios would have to be replaced.
The Inspire is the best thing AT&T has at the moment, but its battery is horrible.
CM7 Inspire 4G
So warranty does not have access to iPhone's.
It sucks, but I don't think I'll ever be able to get them to get me one if I want one. It's also not surprising because obviously part of Apple's deal is that Apple takes care of warranty for the iPhone, thus ATT Warranty does not have access to any.
What they offered me was pretty much anything else though.
The Inspire and Atrix were too new, they didn't have any in warranty yet. Those are the only two Android phones to be considered equivalent or upgrade (Inspire is out solely based upon the battery).
They also offered me some Win 7 devices but in all honesty I don't see those being equivalent in any way. I haven't really researched it and know squat about Windows 7 Phone.
So I'm stuck now. I don't know if I should wait a month or two to see if the Atrix comes into their warranty or just replace the Cappy...
I also got sick of the Captivate and got an Inspire. It definitely works a lot better than the Captivate, and aside from the battery it much nicer. If you don't like the big screen though that might also be a consideration. Personally the battery does annoy the hell out of me though.
I just switched to the atrix other than shi$$y programming in loved cappy so I just took it all the way to stock kies'd it to 2.2 and gave it to my nephew. The atrix is like running a custom rom except its stock that actually works heard a lot of good things from the guys over in the atrix forum is love it so far.

[Q] Infuse or Future AT&T Phones? Suggestions Please?

Hey guys I am currently on a Samsung Captivate and have had the phone for a year now and it has been incredible.
I have got really into the Captivate development, and have flashed almost every ROM there has been made, and help currently work on the Darky i9000 port-->Captivate.
But I am do for an upgrade in June, thus my questions leads me as to what YOU think of the Samsung Infuse compared to another phone yet to come out (i.e. The SGS II <---probably to pricey., the HTC Lead, ect.)
My question is what is the development going to be like for the Infuse in the future and also what do y'all think of the phone just out of the box. How does it feel, look, stock performance.
Finally my last question will there be an Odin flash back to stock method in the future, the thing I love most about my Captivate is that I've soft bricked it at least 1,000 times, but Odin and a Jig are always there.
please be honest, old Captivate users especially, tell me what you have thought of this transition.
Thanks so much,
From a possible future Infuse contributor : D.
if you like the infuse and most people do, unless they are haters who think it's a year late. you would also like the attain! it's a sgs2 and is assumed to come out this july.

it's just an assumption. samsung booked the same reservation for a conference last year for the same date that they did thist year. last year the sgs line was announced andthe captivate came out in july. it's not a relaible method but if i had to guess, well i think they want to keep that pattern going.
The day I ordered mine I noticed the leaked ROM for the HTC Holiday. I was having second thoughts as the specs on the Holiday are pretty impressive. But since I got the Infuse I haven't thought twice about it.
Like the SGS2, there is no release date for the Holiday. So who knows how long the wait will be. The next best thing is always right around the corner. If it's something I want bad enough and it's after my 30 day return window, then I'll just sell the Infuse and buy it outright. Until then, I'm going to enjoy the Infuse because it really is a very nice device.
to the op. to completely answer your questions. this phone is BIG! but it is also thin. i hate the glossy plastics and as much as the back cover looks great it is very cheap. that's not to say it is not durable. the back cover may be flimsy but you wont damage it if it is on the phone. now as much as it looks like an sgs2 the sgs2 looks better, it just proportions out better. other than that it is loaded with 2.2.1 and is butter smooth. there is a noticable differnce from the captivate, not in snappyness but you never get those moments of it getting choppy when it is really busy. also the camera works while making phone calls and so does the gps. the camera app could be better but the flash is super bright. i spent a lot of money on this phone as an impulse buy but i have no buyers remorse like i did with my past android phones. there are devs but nothing is tested as of yet. the devs on here are either just learking or dont have a second phone for testing purposes.
the mhl doesnt work with media hub for licence reasons. i wonder if it will work if we use media hub for an international sgs2? the licence laws are different over sees. but the hdmi output is very sharp. i just need to put some better movies on it to test it better. the trailers on the phone have a crappy compression on them. time to download some ripped movies!

How did you get the mhl to work? I tried it on two TV's and both wouldn't detect my phone as an HDMI device. Is there a setting to get it to work?
Ya thanks so much for the feedback.
Since I loved my Captivate so much I thought I would get its next generation version and get the front facing camera, better display, faster processor.
But then as stated above all the questions regarding thet SGS II **Possibly** coming out in July. I love what the reviews say of the SGS II, plus the development of that will be incredible.
I dont wanna play the waiting game because obviously we all know what the waiting game is, its waiting for the next best thing just to be out down the next two weeks. The Captivate was my first top of the line phone I got, and I loved it, I love hacking into it, I loved soft bricking it, I loved having CM7, to JVH, to all the ROM's.
That being said if the Infuse was getting the development support as that of an Atrix for example I may just jump in, but it will be hard because I dont for see the development for this taking off really any time soon, that being said I could be completely ROM, wait till Jully have no SGS II, and the Infuse having CM7 and Ill be with my Captivate. Oh well : D.
Finally, the one thing I do like about the Infuse is as ALL of you have said, and other reviews is out of the box the Captivate is ****, lets be honest, its choppy, is on 2.1, its GPS is horrendous, and TW3 on that is horrible, but with the development it has been turned into quite an incredible little phone .
If I were to get the Infuse I could be satisfied for a little bit because as everyone says there are some nice stock perks, and is much smoother out of the box. That being said I'll probably wait after the summer till I purchase a phone to just see if there is a possible Odin flash back to stock method in place for this, and how the development proceeds.
Any other word y'all here or things in why the Infuse>> Captivate?
Thanks so much!
I think the Infuse is selling like hotcakes (at least near me). This suggests (although not guarantees) good development for the device.

Ya I know the Infuse is selling well where I live as well but then again I dont know if any of the main SGS Dev's are coming to the Infuse. And that is very important to me.
But I did just think of something, if someone could take the Stock Infuse ROM, and .tar it couldnt we just use Odin to flash back to stock by just putting the stock infuse ROM in a .tar file, putting it into the PDA file slot, .512 Pit, Repartition, and then flash back to stock.
Thats assuming that the Infuse still has Download mode ect. ect.? Just a thought, obviously I dont have an Infuse but would be a nice little test.
THe reason im so intrigued by the Infuse though is, it looks and sounds like the much better Captivate out of the box which makes me think, that it will be nice for a while, while we wait for development, and then someone could whip up some nice ROMs for the Infuse.
That being said if the SGS II does sell like the SGS first generation, and be branded my individual carriers, I think I'd have to go with that, as it comes with 2.3.4, TW4, same processor, Dev support, ect. But in the Infuse defense they do look like very similar phones... They are both probably amazing, but honestly I dont wanna leave my Captivate (with JVH Darky 10.1 Beta) for something stock for too long : P

How did you get the mhl to work? I tried it on two TV's and both wouldn't detect my phone as an HDMI device. Is there a setting to get it to work?

The day I ordered mine I noticed the leaked ROM for the HTC Holiday. I was having second thoughts as the specs on the Holiday are pretty impressive. But since I got the Infuse I haven't thought twice about it.
Like the SGS2, there is no release date for the Holiday. So who knows how long the wait will be. The next best thing is always right around the corner. If it's something I want bad enough and it's after my 30 day return window, then I'll just sell the Infuse and buy it outright. Until then, I'm going to enjoy the Infuse because it really is a very nice device.

I totally agree. The HTC Holiday will definitely be sweet. I was a little bummed when I read an article a day after the Infuse release "Infuse buyers: wait for the Holiday!" But I'd been waiting for the Infuse since January. Eventually in this fast-paced Market, you have to buy a phone and enjoy it for a while, even though something better might be coming out soon.

Agree completely, you cannot play the waiting game ever, although if I am going to use my upgrade it will have to be on the SGS II for AT&T, or the Infuse.
Tough choice, I think it will ultimately come down to how the development is for both, and pricing.
ive never been a huge HTC fan, my best friend owns the Inspire.
I was going to get the Infuse but after hearing about the HTC Holiday I'm going to wait.
My upgrade is going to the galaxy s 2 or the holiday whichever comes first.

Inspire 4G to Galaxy S II

Just Curious, anyone planning on upgrading to the Galaxy S II when it becomes available?
(Also, is a rooted / custom ROM phone also unlocked?)
Nick
IIRC, the Samsung Galaxy S II has an unlocked bootloader, so yes, developers will probably start writing custom ROMs for it.
For me, I'm going to keep this phone until my 2-year contract is up. Even if I had a chance to upgrade to Galaxy S II for free, I wouldn't, because I personally don't like Samsung phones.
I don't understand these questions...This phone just came out what in Feb? Most peeps are in a 2 year contract. I know I am....
I know there are some who buy out of contract but really why ask here and not in the forum for the phone you are in question of?
Most people are going to answer you with a no.
i plan to get the HTC Holiday off-contract but only if it has an unlocked bootloader

Yeah, I'm curious if people will want to switch enough to sell their current phones and buy unlocked. I'm not sure if these things sell well on ebay, but that's what I've done in the past when new iPhones came out.
My Inspire Its New, its in the market over 11 Feb, we don't need to change the phone yet.
Enjoy your Machine
HELL to the NO!
Samsung products are banned from my house.
I'm eligible for a new phone in January, I'll probably stick with HTC.
For "old tech" the Inspire is a kick ass device. Stable as all get out with lots of dev activity. Lots to love about it.
Wow... someone's so pretty rich here. Good for u.
I plan to keep this phone atleast till March next year, when I'll be due for upgrade.

I under clocked to ~700 and it is still so snappy!!!
Yeah, I have to say, I've installed CM7 (stable), and I am SUPER impressed with how fast this thing is now.
I was just curious, I see that you all love this phone very much. Makes me happy with my choice. (My wife shattered her phone, and I picked this one up same day, not my usual month long research)
So, as a former iPhone 4 users, if you could give me one android tip or suggestion, what would it be?

Stay away from task killers that kill tasks at regular intervals. U could use them to kill a stray app though.
I would recommend reading the thread "android memory management" (permanent link in my signature) to learn how android memory management works.

I will preface this by saying while I make really good money( and work damned hard for it) I am not rich.
I have 2 inspires, one off contract and one on, and you can bet your sweet ass I will be getting the gs2. That is provided it lives up the hype and has proper dev support, which I imagine it will. I understand that in the inspire forum your gonna have a hard time finding anyone saying its not the best phone ever for all time, but I am not the typical owner. I dont have a "pride of ownership" complex. While I lOVE this phone, its far from perfect. The battery is a joke, the bluetooth radio is really weak, the cellular radio has a hard time, and the bottom/side covers fit poorly. Not my opinion, just what it is. The only thing that may be a bit subjective is the cellular radio signal. Buttttt I have tested 5 brand new inspires against a captivate, aria, iphone, and a dumbphone and it always has the weakest signal (in db's not F'in bars). I have flashed every radio/ril known to man, and while it will fluctuate a bit from one to another, as an average its mostly the same. I am talking strictly in signal strength (both edge/hspa) no stupid bars or speedtest.net results. I also tested the bluetooth on 3 inspires myself and had a friend test 2 and all did the same thing. It will start to break up bad if you cover the antenna(side cover) with your hand or move away from the source. This again is something I dont experience with my other plethora of phones. I tested it with 2 headsets and 2 different aftermarket headunits(car stereo). As for the battery, well come on do I really have to explain myself there. While I have gotten to get my phone to last most of the day, its still sub par.
Now dont get me wrong I absolutely love this phone, if not why would I buy 2, one off contract. Its fast, beautiful, made of quality materials, has an awesome screen, and best of all has AMAZING dev support. I only explain my issue cause I know Im gonna get flamed. I am just one of those guys that doesn't think that its the best because I own it. When we own stuff we tend to overlook issues and focus on the positives, which is fine provided it doesn't cloud your judgement. I love and have owned mustangs and camaros. I have also owned and loved yamaha's,honda's,kawasaki's,suzuki bikes. I love toys/gadgets of every maker and flavor. Hell I own an svt lightning but still dig the srt-10 and the cheby ss. And yes I have a drawer full of smartphones from htc, palm, samsung, and yes even the rotten apple.

Upgrade or Stay with the Captivate

Hey everyone,
My contract with AT&T just expired and I may switch to Verizon to go for the Galaxy Nexus or Razor Maxx. However, I like the Galaxy SII that AT&T only offers. I currently have a Captivate and love it. I just want to know if anyone has any opinions on the SGSII or Nexus. Thanks

I still have my captivate but it just collects dust after getting my att sgs2. I'm pretty unsure why you would even have to consider upgrading to a phone that is 100 times better then the captivate.
Well the Captivate was the first Android I had and it's so versatile. And I see developers are porting ICS for it. But I can't argue with the power and awesomeness of the SGS2
if I were you I would try an ics ROM. I would recommend docs Master ics (v3.1)
My cappy is blazing fast. I'm talking 0 lag!
MC 3 runs completely smooth with not a hint of stutter or lag. That's with no over clocking! When I oc/live oc it with nstools, I can get it up to 1500mghz.
Run it for a while and wait for the sgs 3.
Hope this helps you on your decision.

I'm loving ICS and the anker battery on the cappy, it changed my decision on wanting to upgrade now. My upgrade was eligible last Oct, but I holding out till summer when all the quad-cores come out (I HOPE!!).
Yea, I guess waiting is always an option, especially if more powerful phones are still to come! I'll look more into ICS and see what I can do, I'm on Serendipity 7 right now and it's pretty laggy, at least for me.
I went from a Captivate running S7 to a SGSII. To say the SGSII blows away the Captivate is an understatement. I have felt zero need to even root the phone yet. It is great out of the box. Fast, stable, great battery life. Not one force close since I got it 6-7 weeks ago FYI, still running 2.3.4 Gingerbread. If you get one, don't update to 2.3.6. It has battery drain issues.

FC out of the box was never an issue. Why anyone would buy a new phone that is only running GB is beyond me. If I was in a position to switch carriers I'd go with the Nexus, you're getting the good stuff that everyone else is just trying to catch up to.

Well isn't the sgs2 slated for an ICS upgrade? I know Samsung said that the captivate won't get ICS. And we all know how much of an ordeal it was just to get froyo, let alone gingerbread on it, so it'll probably be the same way for the sgs2, but it has better specs than the Nexus
If I were you I would upgrade in a heart beat. Hardware-wise the Captivate just can't compete with the dual-cores phone you mentioned. And the battery from the Maxx is a beast!
Keep in mind that AT&T is now charging doubled the upgrade fee (from $18 to $36). Switching to Verzion can easily get you free activation + free shipping via some online retailer in addition to their "Twice the data, same low price" data promo, which is quite a deal unless you got grandfathered with AT&T previous data plan.
I also loved the Galaxy S II, only downside is no 4G LTE with the exception of the Skyrocket. Rumor has it that Skyrocket HD is coming to AT&T, with a full 720p Super AMOLED screen upgrade from a 480x800. You might want to wait on that.
Just my two cents.

What he said
I still love my C(r)aptivate. I loathed it something aweful because of the utterly fail GPS, but all-in-all it's still a fantastic phone. Seeing that I have the LG Thrill as my main phone(I use nav a lot and needed better gps or i wouldn't have) which just came out and is still on FROYO and a phone that came out last July already has Gingerbread...It's nice to know that it is still supported. A lot is to be said about not having a contract being held over your head too. Personally if I were you I would keep the Captivate and leave my options open. Some awesome phones will be coming out Q3 this year. I'm looking forward to the Tegra 3 powered HTC Endeavor. Bide your time and know you can jump ship to another carrier any time you choose. IMHO
Yea, the GPS was a huge fail, I actually sent back my first one because apparently the first manufactured devices were "defective" but even after I got a new one my GPS didn't improve much. The captivate is under powered, but it sounds like some pretty awesome phones are in the works and not having a contract allows for some breathing room. I guess I'll just see which carrier releases the most desirable phone in the next few months or so and go from there.

No it's not, if anything call it "outdated." The device is getting close to two years old! When it came out no one was honestly considering a PHONE having a dual-core CPU. In all honesty they don't need it! Quad-core is just ridicules... The ICS ROMs we have now show that the phone is by no means under powered.
As to the other idea, all I can say is that AT&T seems to be getting more and more greedy, their practices more sleazy... Or at least being faster to jump on ways to improve profits and reduce costs, of which we the customers are seeing no benefits...

Improve profits and reduce costs as in raise rates and reduce services. Or Promise a technology, then abandon it before fruition. I liked the falsely advertising a technology ploy. I've been with this phone service since it was Cingular, which in my opinion was a far better company. It's been getting harder and harder to renew my contract. I find myself peering over the fence to see how green the grass is on the other side.

I know what you mean here... I've been with them since Cingular as well and I know the prices will go up over time, but their service hasn't improved one bit. One big bonus of Verizon is the coverage they have nationwide is FAR superior to AT&T's. When you have to sell a Microcell to imporve coverage in your customer's houses, you know you need to upgrade your service. Verizon will probably end up having the better LTE network too, as AT&T never went nationwide 3G, as Verizon did looong ago
I'm switching to Verizon as well in March. Why? Att and their throttling madness .I get throttle every month right around the 2gb mark 2 weeks into my billing cycle after that data is unusable. I just sold my Sgs2 skyrocket yesterday using the captivate until my contract is over .
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
I got the captivate the second day the phone came out, so I have the phone with all the problems. I ALMOST upgraded to the SGS2, until teamhacksung's ICS rom came out. It runs so smoothly that it actually makes my captivate usable! I would suggest waiting for the SGS3; thats what I am doing. Why buy a phone that has been out for a long time (SGS2) when the upgrade is just around the corner!
No matter how good these ROMs get, it is impossible to fix my terrible GPS, connection dropping issues, battery drains, and random crashes.
I just read an article about the throttling and how inconsistent it is at various data limits. I just can't believe they get away with it. It just shows how inferior their network is to Verizon if Verizon can handle it smoothly. Yea the SGS3 is worth waiting for. I think I'm gonna try ICS on my Captivate for now and hopefully that will hold me long enough. I just hate that it doesn't have a front facing camera.
Cappy still rules!
1. On stock ROMs - they don't cut it. XDA matured to fix all bugs and shortcomings of manufacturer ROM.
2. May be skip AT&T upgrade alltogether? See what they did to GSII Skyrocket and Note? Bastardized and downgraded to Snapdragon old chip.
3. Get GSII from ebay, may be? It is around 500 now.
