Has anyone else notices that once the Captivate hits 10% battery (or maybe it's less than 10%) you can no longer use the "Music Player" application?
Any way around this?
I wanted to continue using the Music Player in order to drain the phone to 0% but couldn't once I hit 9 or 10%. I could use Pandora though.
Yep, stock music player will not allow you to listen to music under 10%. I'm sure music apps will let you though. I'm using mixzing and it's pretty good. A bit choppy though if you let it update your album artwork all the time.

I wonder if the stock app can be hacked to disable this annoying "feature". Other than that I actually like the stock music app better than the couple other market music apps I've tried.
It also affects the camera and video player--which is annoying. I mean, I realize the battery is low, but I might still want to take a picture, or listen to music. 10% of the battery remaining should still be plenty to listen to music for a while.
Any apps outside of the stock ones don't prevent you from using them though. Guess I need to find a camera alternative.
The only reason I chose a third party music app was because my Captivate skips and stutters when playing music and I heard that mixzing/double twist don't do that. Otherwise I'd stick with the default player because it's pretty good.

Are you sure its not another program interfering with the function of the music player? I multi-task with the music player in the background often, and never had any skipping.
Do any of you guys using the music player have problems sorting your music by artist? How much music do you have on your phone? I like the stock player too, but its useless to me since it crashes every time I try to sort by artist.

I'm pretty sure it's not another program that's causing the skipping. There are lots of posts about this on androidforums and most people are not running any background apps/used ATK to kill more resource intensive apps. I'm wondering if there are hidden system processes that make it stutter like that.
In general I listen to music at work. I'm not surfing or multitasking on my phone. I'm only listening to music. Yet it still skips/stutters. I wonder if background processes like syncing or something is upsetting the music player but I doubt it. Besides, it just shouldn't skip to begin with.
This needs to be disabled, and now. It does the same thing to the camera, and I was at a concert last night and it wouldn't let me open the camera because I had less than 15% battery. I didn't give a **** about my phone for calling, I wanted pictures of the last 3 bands playing. To make it better, it had been bright as hell all day, and the last 3 sets were as the sun was finally going down and they had really cool stage setups that I would have loved to have been able to take pictures or videos of.
F*** you whoever thinks they should choose FOR ME what I should do with my battery. This is bull****. I'll use every last drop of power taking pictures WHILE listening to music if I want.
If I sound a little annoyed, it's because I am. I had seen this before, at least for the music player, but wasn't thinking about it. I watched my battery all day to make sure I had enough to get pictures of all the bands playing, and 15% was enough for a couple of pictures for the last few bands. So yeah, I'm annoyed. I don't know if this is a Samsung thing, or an Android thing, but it needs to be gone.

I am looking for an Android player that is pretty simple but i do not see why its so hard to find?
All I want is something that lets me play MP3's.. that does not scan the entire device (ringtones always seem to show up and I dont want them to)
something that kinda roots itself on the SD Card in a folder like "Music"
with a nice home screen
AND
somethign that will resume the next time it's open. for some reason the media player that comes with my Captivate seems to wants me to start all over when i dont use it for 30 min or so..
simple?
thanks for the advise

PowerAMP. It's in the market, and has a really nice EQ setup in addition to what you're talking about. It's in beta right now.

thank you, Downloading and testing this now. I will keep you posted on my impression!
There is one in alpha
Try this one. It pulls data in from the music folder and allows for pause, fast forward and rewind. However it is still in alpha...
Meridian player has most of the features you are after such as Folder browsing and resuming Videos. Plus it has decent widget also

+1 for Power Amp
Player pro does the folder playing and is very simple, got some nice widget aswell
MortPlayer is another nice light alternative that meets your criteria. There is also a version of MortPlayer specifically for audiobooks that allows you to make bookmarks in your sound files.
I actually use both PowerAMP and MortPlayer: PowerAMP for general music listening and it's very pretty UI, and MortPlayer for listening to long recordings of lectures so that I can consistently come back to where I left off.
So after some testing I really like using my Thunderbolt for Pandora, but not too sure about trading it out for my ipod...the ipod seems to give better output, as I have to crank it up to about 50 to match a volume level of 38-40 on my ipod. Even at that the vocals are struggling and the bass seems to drown it out a bit even with the bass turned all the way down. This may not be a TB issue but maybe a player issue (I use Poweramp Unlocked version). While Poweramp is nice its not exceptional. At this point I am not sure what to do as I would like to use Google Music instead of iTunes, but I am not sure if its ipod compatible or how big of a hassle is. I am hoping a really nice music player will come out soon...what do you guys think?
I was very unhappy with the default music player.
I would suggest getting doubleTwist, I find it to be waaaaay better than the default. And after you try out the free version, I would HIGHLY recommend getting the paid version with AirSync. It offers an iTunes like interface that can wirelessly (and pretty amazingly and bug free) sync music to your phone over your wifi network.

I was very very interested in this, and now that you mention it I will try it out. The reason I didn't try it was because of all the bad comments on it in the market, but those are always a bit hard to trust anyways, I will definitely give it a shot
I'm a music geek. I have to have all of my music in 320 mp3 or lossless. And I hqvent experienced low quality with poweramp and volume plus. Just make sure you have the eq off.

Give Google Music a try. It's spectacular! I uploaded 6,000+ songs from my iTunes library and now listen (with excellent quality) on my TB. Important note: I uploaded the songs from my Music folder not my iPod. I have not tried uploading from an iPod, although that is offered as an option in the Google Music Manager. Let us know how it works.

Tried google music but 225 of my songs weren't transferred for some DRM problem, even though they are all paid for music. It looks like I will be going back to my ipod. The sound quality is just no where near my ipod when it comes to car stereo. Still turning my music a good 15+ up than with my ipod. Also, for some reason after about 20 minutes of listening the music just suddenly gets quieter...this is a huge problem and I have no idea what it is
I don't think there is a lot of discussion about this, so I thought i would start one. Good evening, my name is Gregg and I am a recovering Ioser. It started out with just an ipod...you know it was convenient, it was shiny. It worked well. Buying music was a simple process. You clicked and could listen immediatly. At first it was just occasionally, but I got into the podcast scene and itseemed to fit me perfectly. Podcasts would let me listen to things while I was doing chores around the house. Eventually though podcasts on my ipod weren't enough for me. I also had to carry around a phone on the side, so I decided that maybe it would be OK to try a little iphone. The first click was awesome...phone and tunes...podcasts done well. I was hooked.
For two years I was doing a lot of Ios, but eventually the shiny IOS had me hooked. There were bills for apps that did nothing but make funny noises, their was music that I paid for but never listened to. I was hooked. I probably hit rock-bottom last year. My iosing was out of control and I thought I would go cold turkey. So I got my G2x.
Sorry for the goofy intro, but I though this would set me up a bit. Here's what I have itunes on the windows side. So getting music and podcasts from itunes to the g2X involves multiple layers.
1. Moving music to the machine.
2. Moving and managing podcasts
3. Playing and managing music (which includes playing, rating music and searchng through my music)
So I will start with the first question. From what I understand there are really two ways that I know of to move music and podcasts from itunes to your phone. One is doubletwist, the other is isyncr. There might be others, but these are the two that I worked with. of the two I went with iSyncr and here's why. Doubletwist has a lot going for it. Really a nice interface, and a nice music player on the android side. Its trying very hard to give me, an ex-ioser a bit of what I am missing. The sync app looks like itunes and allows me to sync my playlists. The app looks a lot like itunes. It plays music fine. The player struggled with my phone, though. Somehow it didn't cooperate with the cm7 ROM I am using. It wouldn't play well on the lock screen and seemed buggy. The syncing was buggy too. Genius podcasts wouldn't refresh when they changed on my itunes. There were workaround(relaunch itunes and doubletwist).
Isyncr is a 2.99 purchase. Its simple. You install the app on the android(you pretty much install and forget it) and it syncs when you launch the windows EXE on the memory card when the phone is docked to the computer. It works well. It syncs podcasts, and ratings. To me, that was important because I have this theory that I will rate my music into organization in itunes. Its flawless. I haven't tried the wifi setup, but I might in the future. It doesn't play your music, so its just a solution for syncing.
As for podcasts, I tried very hardto find a solution on the android side that will satisfy my needs right on the android. I bought the full version of pocketcasts. There are a lot of good things going for it, but there are bugs. One that was kind of a deal breaker was that if you try to advance the podcast in the player while its playing you lock up the app. Restart is the only solution. So, it was a good, pretty solution, but it had to go. I tried a couple other apps, but I wasn't sold.
So, ultimately, isyncr is my solution for podcasts too. It woks well, but it will require a daily sync. The advantage ultimatley of syncing from the desktop is also that I am able to make Mp3 CDs of podcasts as well as sync my podcasts from the same source. Simple, efficient and workable.
Which brings me to playing. I love google music(I have two more invites if anyone wants one), and it allows me to access my music when I am around wifi seamlessly. It allows me to make instant mixes based on a song. That's a killer feature. Combined with wireless access to all my music via the cloud its excellent. Advancing and moving within tracks and podcasts works well. Its not a full-feature app, but it works.
Almost there, there is one last aspect. I would like to rate music from my library while its playing. Isyncr has a nice widget that allows you to rate and see your playing apps and see the album art. Its part of the package. The ratings and playcounts go right back to itunes.
My preferences represent my unique quirks in terms of music and listening: I am a podcaster and a music listener and I prefer to rate my music. Because of this I am happy with: Isyncr and google music.
Long set-up, but ultimately I am asking you what your music listening setup is. Thoughts?
I use the standard music app since it has DTS for the g2x. Google music as well for some streaming music. Google Listen app for podcasts. I also like BeyondPod.
I drag and drop music. It's not fancy but I don't mind.
Power Amp with some EQ modifications and Voodoo Sound is how I enjoy my music. I used to use Doubletwist for syncing my music to my phone, but each update made more and more bloated, along with random freezes, so I just uninstalled it. Sony's Media Go software good is good for adding music, but I prefer to drag and drop into organized folders.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2x using XDA Premium App
If you're using a stock ROM, I'd recommend sticking to the stock player because of it's DTS feature. It greatly improves sound quality if you have it selected.
Hi all, I am looking for a music app that's easy on battery.
Criteria: Must work without media scanner
I have disabled media scanner, so literally all music apps I got from market can't seem to pick up my audio files. One works -- Music Folder Player Donate. I am looking for something like it, that reads based on folders, or scans music internally, rather than relying on media scanner.
This app is all nice, but it is missing navigation controls in notification dropdown. I am looking for a music app that would provide me these controls too. I am not too particular on lock screen music controls.
Have you tried PlayerPro?
How about mort player, has a nice widget too. I personally use power amp. But i feel mort is just as good. And free.
I would first like to try a free one, n then can upgrade. And then it should be easy on battery too.
Edit: Mort is packed with so many features for a free app!!!
The trick is that you need to check if the player supports GAPLESS playback. Most do *not*. So any live stuff, albums that blend songs together (Pink Floyd is notorious for this) will get a nice annoying pause in between songs that was never intended to be there. Even if some claim they are gapless they in practice are not (believe nothing, test everything). The app needs to actually trim any small dead spot at the end or you will get a click or pop at the end of songs.
The only player I found that does this successfully is Power Amp but there could be others, I just haven't found them yet.

My main criteria is low processor usage when to maximize battery.
Mort is good. Of the time I had the player on and screen off, it was on 200 for about 90% of time. CPU foreground was only 14s for about 47 mins of usage.
If Google Music just saves and caches all of your online songs to your storage on your phone, what's the point? I can just use less battery with poweramp.
It's a good music player with the convenient option to stream music. If you don't like it, uncheck the box for streaming in the settings. Not a big deal.

Of course it gets saved, it has to save it somewhere. If you don't want the files on your phone then just turn off caching in Google Music settings. All streaming services do the same thing, on your phone, PC, or anything else: a "streamed" file must be saved somewhere, either in RAM or on disk, in order to be used.
Now to answer your initial question, Google Music is a useful service because it allows me to access my entire 200+GB music library on the go without physically having 200GB of music on my phone.
I was excited to hear that I could upload all my music to the google. I only have 20 GB so it was nice at first. Then it got too inconvenient so I uninstalled from my phone.
For a while it was my only music player, but it doesn't have the option of setting a song as a ringer, so I had to reinstall the stock music app.
Problem 1 -
A) The music information takes close 5 minutes to show up on my phone, every time.
B) Then, if I select 'play album,' the first track repeats continuously until I manually skip to the next.
C) There is no alphabet shortcut to the right, so if I want to listen to Seal, I have to scroll for a looong time. Did I mention I only use this while driving!!
Problem 2 - Then I learned that Google converts all sample rates to the standard 128kbit/s. Sorry, most of my music is sampled a lot higher than that so I can't even use it as a backup of my music.
Problem 3 - I have found mp3s that are corrupt so I will need to rip them again. But, once I upload then delete from the google cloud, the music manager won't decide to upload that album again. Not even if I delete the old, rip the cd again, then copy into the music directory. WTF
I understand this isn't dynamic syncing like dropbox, it's just dumb storage but come on, a little more effort could be made to deal with these small things.
In the end with the data caps carriers are imposing cloud based services really don't make a lot of sense. Then add in the fact that a dropped connection can corrupt the file and SDcards start looking a whole lot better

Definite +1.
I'm not in a 4G area right now and my songs always skip every minute to buffer (since I unchecked cache to sd)
The UI isn't all that great to be honest...going back to PowerAMP.
And regarding the 128kbps, I can't deal with that. Every time I download a song I convert it to 224

Convert it from what? You can't add back information that has already been lost so all you'd be doing is another lossy re-encode, making it even worse.
Anyway, 128kbps would be a deal breaker for me as all my rips are 320kbps from source. Streaming can only make matters worse too.
Is it the same as ics music player?
