[Q]Sony X10 vs Moto Milestone - General Questions and Answers

After a month of windowshopping,
My decisions have came down to the Sony X10 and the Motorola Milestone.
The prices on ebay are almost identical on these, even though the contract price of X10 is cheaper than the Milestone. ( not sure why )
I like how the Motorola Milestone has a physicial QWERTY, however, I have heard that it is not the greatest, and the Processing speed of the Milestone also worries me.
On the other hand, X10 has a great 8.1mp camera, 1Ghz processor. Its sad to not have a physical keyboard but I dont think the world is going to end.
Another question is that will the X10 be getting an upgrade soon? I notice it's still running 1.6, but Sony promised to make an upgrade.
PS: I'm not too crazy about modding my device and such, but Im willing to mod my device if it makes a big difference.
I'm also not a huge fan of the Nexus One/ Desire designs, and the price + shipping for one is also a bit beyond my limits.
What would you guys suggest me getting?
Your input is greatly appreciated!

Please give me some tips!
I would like to have one decided and buy it soon!
Also, would the Nokia N900 be a good one to consider??

Xperia X10 or HTC Desire or wait for WP7?

Hi,
I bought a HTC Hero last week but it came with a dead pixel so I sent it back (eBay). I didn't use it, really, but Andoid looks nice. (I am a Widows Mobile veteran - 2006-2010, and I'm 18).
I bought a T-Mobile 30 day rolling contract last week (£10 - 100 mins, 100 texts + internet booster),, which is a great value, so I was looking to buy a handset separately (hence Hero). Ideally I want to spend £200 to £250. No more, because prices depreciate very quickly from higher than that.
I was looking at another Hero, but realised how cheap a Desire or Legend or X10 could be, if on a contract!
For a 24 month contract, at £10 per month (100 mins, 100 texts + internet booster), a Desire would be £164 from T-Mobile. This is fantastic, I think, as I would ALWAYS spend at least £10 on airtime.
An Xperia X10 would be £226!
I hope this helps some people, as I was pleasantly surprised by the T-Mobile UK prices. I am working right now but will be a student in London next year, so I don't want a contract that's too expensive (ideally no more than £20 per month).
Also, I've read that Virgin will offer some of these - should I try Virgin or steer clear?
However, there's a part of me that thinks I should buy a cheaper phone that can still communicate just as well, and wait for Windows Phone 7.
What should I do, what should I do? What are you doing?
I'm trying to decide myself whether i should get the X10 or the Desire. I like the X10 form factor, but the display of the desire seems to be much better... AMOLED + 16m colors vs 65k :/

Had those thoughts about the screen myself, some time ago and today too.
From a comparison review (can't remember where) there appears not be a huge difference (i.e. 56k doesn't make much difference). AMOLED has its downsides also.
Maybe I'll start a thread on this...
From what I see on GSMarena the most notable differences are screen size and display. X10 also has 1GB of memory instead of the 512 of the desire.
Main thing that is drawing me towards X10 is that i have had 3 HTCs so far and the driver quality is abysmal on WiMo phones, dunno how they are on Android. If they still lack GPU drivers for the chips then defenetly I will be leaning towards the X10.
for me theres only 1 choice, desire. it has better screen, it has sense, android 2.1 not 1.6 and u dont know when its gonna get an update if it actually will get one. and desire looks better

you dont need that much memory anyway, x10 still lags and has that stupid keyboard bug while typing first word
I think HTC Desire with HTC sense is a much more robust and refined way of using Android personally
HTC have been fiddling with Android since the G1 - and they've got it pretty much spot on now.. Which is why i've finally taken the plunge with the HTC Desire.
It's going to another 1/2 phones until i think Sony really has a grip on their UI and Android itself, but the X10 is one hell of a first attempt. Also only further confirms how seriously the likes of Sony are taking Android now.
Motorola, Sony, Samsung LG and HTC - all backing Android in a very big way.

Do you have any more insight regarding the driver support on HTC android sets? Particularly the Qualcomm GPU drivers (Which are absent in WiMo). I figure thats the main drawback of my HD... If it had proper driver support it wouldn't seem slow..
If someone who has used either, could compare (X10 particularly) in the coming days and weeks, it would be great.
I will almost probably go for the X10, for its superior sound quality (not great, but on my Hero it was poor, and Desire probably will be too) and camera. I use these features quite a bit, surprisingly, as I won't carry an MP3 player and camera in addition to this (especially as it's huge).
I hope with some confidence that bugs will be addressed very quickly and the 2.1 update rolled out soon after. I look at at as a handset with potential. This applies to screen colours too, I suppose.
This is based on an Engadget review. Not very in-depth, but it's a start (hopefully GSM Arena et al. will review the final product soon)
I might well buy it on Friday or Saturday (next wage!), from T-Mobile (online), so feel free to ask questions after I confirm it's arrived.
T-Mobile is good value!
Say handset only X1 is £450.
It's around £230 on a 24 month £10 contract with 100 mins, 100 texts, internet + booster. Total = £470!!!
I want the white one though, so maybe I should wait a few weeks for Orange.

Samsung Captivate vs Sony xperia x10

Xperia x10 is not out yet, but I am looking to get high end Android phone for AT&T. Any thoughts or suggestions on what should I get? Xperia has impressive specs, but I hear their UI on top of Android OS is super sluggish. On the other hand Captivate has been getting good reviews. Please help

X10 has android 1.6 still... game over. Plus the Captivate has an extremely beautiful SAMOLED Screen, 16GB internal. Although it lacks and only has a 5MP Camera, and no LED Flash, its still a superior phone imo.
The X10 is old tech. It may just be coming out in the US now but it's been out in Canada for months. It has a decent display but it doesn't compare to the SAMOLED. It also has no multitouch support, only 256MB of RAM and 1GB internal storage. It's not bad for a midrange Android phone, but I wouldn't call it high end.
so would you recommend Captivate instead of Xperia ?
People think Samsung is slow with OS updates, Sony is just getting around to testing 2.1 for the x10!
Forget even thinking about Froyo or future (3.x) versions anytime in the near future! deal breaker right there...
Xperia X10 is a year too late to the game in US. It is seriously outdated and UI performance is also really slow from the reviews I read.
Anyone pick this up is either really uninformed or a Sony fanboy. Or both.
debby downer
Im so saddened by how Sony is playing catchup. What happened to them?
Im keeping my captivate and Im a hardcore sony fanboy. at least my ps3, tv, and headphones are kickass.
Also, the capacitive screen on the X10 is NOT multi-touch capable. EVER. It's not a 1.6 issue, it's a hardware constraint.
Long story short, pay the extra bucks for the Captivate and get a better, lighter, much faster and more future-proof phone with a strong development community.
Or go watch paint dry in the X10 subforums here as people cheer that they finally got root (5 months after ship).
Everything everyone here said its bs. If u go to the x10 forum and ask it will be exactly the oposite. The x10 is a high end device and soon will be a really big competitor. Do your research and make up your own mind do not listen to people that bash the x10 cause they dont know wtf their talking about.

You kind of picked the wrong forum to ask this question. All the answers you get in here will be from Captivate fanboys. I have a Captivate and in my opinion, I'd rather have a non-pentile matrix LCD over a pentile matrix OLED any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Also, the Captivate has a 16GB "internal" sdcard, the Experia has an 8GB. The Xperia has 1GB internal NAND ROM, the Captivate has 512MB. The Xperia has 256MB RAM, the Captivate 512MB. The Xperia has working GPS, the Captivate doesnt. The Xperia has 8MP cam with dual LED flash, the Captivate 5MP no flash. Both have 1GHz CPU, the Captivate has the better 3D GPU. Anybody who says the Xperia is not a top end phone is just lying to themselves. Its pretty darn equal to the Evo hardware wise. Granted it does only come with Android 1.6 vs 2.1 on most other phones and even 2.2 on a few now. A lot of people seem to like the UI that sony put on it. I've never used it so I cant speak intelligently about it. Sony has said it'll be updating to 2.1 in mid Q3 or Q4 (depending on what source you read).
Its really a very solid phone and if you wait for a week or two you'll be able to pick it up from Amazon.com for $49.99.

Just for clarification, my GPS on my Captivate works fine, with no problems.
Love the industrial design and the careful design of the UI with the X10, but turned-off by the screen quality. Being stuck with Android 1.6 even after it's been released for half a year is also a big no-no.

My GPS works fine too. It pulled my location spot-on in as little as 10 seconds. Don't know why some people have problems such as taking more than a 1-2 mins or even 5 mins+.
So the X10 is running a newer version of android snr doesn't lack multitouch? I'm considering returning my captivate, but it wouldn't be replaced by an x10.
The phone's been out for almost a year if I remember correctly, and its JUST getting rooted.
Sent from my Samsung Captivate.
With the exception of the 8mp camera sensor, the Galaxy S/Captivate hardware completely trumps the Xperia.

I am in the same boat as you i was waitin for this phone to come to att like 8 months ago, but i love my captivate
The XPERIA X10 is based on an aging platform and only has 256MB if RAM. I think its a good midend android handset in AT&Ts lineup and is priced about right, but the Captivate IMO blows it away. Not to say it isn't a good phone, but there are better phones out right now. This should have been released in Q1 2010.

If they had released the Xperia X10 during Xmas last year, it would've been a compelling choice on AT&T. Now with Captivate enticing you with the superior SAMOLED display, and Aria being cheaper and with a more up to date software, the X10 is in a tough spot. There is not much about it that would generate a lot of buzz. If Sony had any sense, they would have spent the last couple of months getting FroYo on the phone. With that, the X10 could've been a contender.

I'm with you guys on Sony products. However, Sony's phones are by-product technologies of Ericsson that's bought by Sony. Cell phone was not Sony's strong point. I've had owned a Sony K750 and K800i (Casino Royale Edition). They still last long enough to be carried on to my family members who are not into the smartphone hypes.
I looked up the specs for the X10 at engadget mobile, it an effort to come up with an even-handed review. Basically, it comes down to how much of a hit to your wallet fifty bucks is. The X10 is more closely comparable to the Aria. It's a good midrange phone with midrange capabilities. The Captivate, however, is an iPhone killer, if they would market it properly. So, based on my experience, the advantages of the X10 over the Captivate are:
1. It's cheaper. Probably a LOT cheaper if you get it on Amazon.
2. It's narrower. The Captivate is pretty wide, like talking into a piece of toast.
3. An extra 54 rows of pixels, for that movie-theater effect.
4. An even higher-resolution barcode scanner, er, um, camera.
But as others have said, these two phones are not really in the same league.

Next phone, Xperia Arc or Moto Atrix?

So heres the deal, Im on att and already upgraded so I will have to buy either outright, overall I'd say the Atrix bests the Arc in specs but the design of the Arc is fantastic imo and it has a better screen and im gonna assume the camera will be better, im just not sure though, also theres the question of release date and price, anyone have any ideas when these phones will come and how much on eBay? Also do you think that the Arc will make it to att or at least a 3g compatible version at launch? I know people are gonna say avoid SE but I like them and I liked the X10, only thing that annoyed me was no MT.
Anyway what do you guys think? I really need a new phone as I am using a 3GS after my captivate broke, its not bad but I really miss Android.
Well you like Android so I'm not gonna go into the pros/cons of the OS. Just these two devices.
Xperia Arc (Should be out by April, most likely WON'T support AT&T 3G)
Pros:
-Good quality camera
-Thin and sleek
-4" Screen (not too big, not too small)
-Great screen BUT there's only a major difference when playing videos or looking at photos. Besides that, it's just a normal but good quality LCD.
-Gingerbread 2.3
Cons:
-Sony Ericsson put a skin on it
-Sony Ericsson has a spotty history with updates (I'm sure you know that being a X10 owner).
-Probably just as expensive as the Atrix thanks to the "Sony tax".
Motorola Atrix (Should be out by March, launching on AT&T)
Pros:
-Tegra 2 = total beast and the fastest thing out there.
-4" Screen (not too big, not too small)
-Screen resolution of 540x960 (qHD) -- the highest res screen of any Android device.
-Motorola is better than most to provide software updates.
-Crazy WebTop app and Laptop 'Dock'
-1930mah battery -- largest of any Android device.
-HSPA+ so you get 4G-like speeds.
-Front-facing camera
Cons:
-Motorola's abortion of a skin is on there.
-Froyo 2.2 and no idea of when upgrade will come.
-WebTop app looks cool, but could still suck.
-Despite large battery, Tegra 2 is under the hood and that could suck some battery really quickly.
Do you like MotoBLUR or whateverskinSonyEriccsonhasontheirGingerbread? I personally think MotoBLUR is complete crap and the fact that AT&T is not known for updating their phones rather quickly might be a roadblock. Than there is the locked bootloader if you don't plan on doing much with custom roms.
In all seriousness, there is no way in hell that the Atrix will have a better camera than the Arc, mainly because Cybershot cameras usually take phenomenal photos (tested with two Cybershots) and the Arc kind of has the censor from the Cybershots. The Arc might be the best camera orientated Android phone despite the lack of 1080p video recording. Motorola isn't really known for having good cameras, but they are known for using gorilla glass on most of their phones, so I am assuming the Atrix has that.
Depends on your preference really. I would personally go with the Arc and hope that SE is true to their word about updating their phones.
Atrix will come by March 1st.
Arc will come April.
Most unlocked phones have AT&T bands, so I wouldn't expect the Arc to be any different.
I would definitely go for the Atrix. Im on ATT too but I upgraded last june to the captivate so I will be waiting as well.
However, I would definitely get the atrix because of the specs and docking capability.
Well im leaning towards the arc as I like SE and imo they make the best looking phones, and that silver one is...wow! Only thing I need a confirmation is price, date and most important if it will have 3g bands, im willing to wait but not till the mddle if the year either lol
my question as well...arc or atrix?
I would go with Sony, mainky because i own X8 aswell and it proved to be a quite nice phone for the price range it has.
Yea, updates are Sony's biggest con, but besides that i had no real problems with it All their devices i had run pretty nice and smooth
Defiantly arc the looks of it are awesome plus it'll have 3 rd gen snap dragon soc won't be as powerful as atrix but the is like no apps that really use dual core but wait and see as for me battery life is huge

It's funny how peoples' tastes differ. I think SE phones look horrible, especially the Arc. Also, in a few months time phones with single-core processors will seem so out-of-date.
Motorola Atrix for me.

lol it is funny, I love Sony's phones, they always look different from the competition as well instead of an iphone wannabe, Atrix looks so....common.
Wait and watch the forums on XDA see which phone gets rooted first/more easily and see which phone is more easily modded.
I had the X10 and while it's a great phone the lack of support from SE really annoyed me and the fact that they locked that phone down like crazy was even more frustrating.
True, but as every phone out there, X10 will get unlocked properly sooner or later. Wasn't much of a factor here when i was buying my Xperia X8

Not true, I had a Motorola Milestone (European version of the Droid) and that never was properly unlocked-- still a great phone for it's time through, despite its weaknesses.
Anyways, to actually answer the question, the Atrix is a beast. 16gb internal storage is fantastic. Super fast processor. Both Sony and Motorola have pretty crappy track records when it comes to customer support, so don't expect much from either company on that front. I'd go with the Atrix.
Atrix is way better. I dont trust sony phones....

I can talk about SE Arc 'cause I personally use this device atm
I'm really satisfied for its functions, pros:
a) weight, it's so light
b) good media section (camera, music player...just radio is pretty poor in tuning)
c) pack (two usb cables, one for charging, the other for car charging - car charger included - screen protection - nice headphones)
d) display (wide enough and natural colors)
e) design (IMHO, the best form factor atm)
i've seen both phones a prefer the dual core atrix as it is much quicker (atleast in my experience)
go with your feeling, pick up you like
These two phones completely died off after CES.
Yes, stay for the first will be root

[Q] Is Motorola DEFY a good buy?

Hi, I'm planning to buy motorola DEFY in a short while. Given that it is still on Eclair(officially, for India.Though motorola's site says that FroYo update is scheduled for Q2 2011, I doubt they are going to release it on-time ) how does it fare in terms of UI responsiveness, battery life(hopefully 2 days on average use?),call quality, loudness etc?
I've been a Samsung bug till now, and jumping to moto(with a locked bootloader?) for my first android device is kind of making me have second thoughts about this phone My budget is also capped near DEFY's price range(~18k INR). I'll probably tinker with my phone in the first week itself, and also wanted to know if the dev community for DEFY is good(I don't care if it's not the best, but it should be good).
Finally, I want to know if I'm missing out on anything that's better at a lower cost. I'm new here(joined a couple of days back, but didn't have time to post), so I hope I have posted it at the right place
Thanks in advance...
The dev community for the Defy is crazy! The locked bootloader isn't an obstacle for them. There's Cyanogenmod7 and MIUI available, both of which are Gingerbread. They're still a bit rough, but give it a few weeks and they'll shine. Until then, there's Froyo ROMs to choose from.
In this price range, the only other phones I could find were the Samsung Galaxy Ace and the HTC Wildfire S, both of which have a lower resolution display (480x320, compared to Defy's 854x480) and a less good processor.
There's a dedicated Defy section here at XDA. Check that out. The huge amount of activity there, plus the low price for great hardware, is what convinced me to buy a Defy despite the locked bootloader.
Thanks for the info. I'm ordering it today
Cool advice. Thanks, I agree that the DEFY is the best buy in its price range.

Would you get this device again?

Hello
My HTC EVO 4G LTE died and I am looking for a used device to keep me going for a bit till I get a new one later this year. I've always been a fan of QWERTY keyboard and Photon Q intrigues me. Do you guys recommend this device? I am also looking at LG Optimus G.
Thanks
The phone is a bit "old" by today's standards... but if you want a keyboard device (and it looks like you're on Sprint) there's probably none better. Probably never will be either....
The device will never get anything beyond 4.1.2 "officially" - but unofficially (CM support et al is quite good) there is 4.4.3 and will continue to be updates for a while probably.
Seeing the thread's title makes me wanna reply...
I just sold my Photon Q weeks ago because it looked too worn out and I want some fresh experience, but when I have that money again I surely will grab another one - heck, I'll shell out even more money for a like-new one, 'cuz it's worth it if you're a collector or a die-hard QWERTY fan. Totally the best in its class. Performance may not be as high as Optimus G but it holds its own with CM11 and @arrrghhh 's overclock blessings.
Sent from Google Nexus 4 @ CM11
I appreciate all the feedback. I made the decision to go with Optimus G, simply because I am planning to use this device for 6 months and the specs of Optimus G won me over the QWERTY keyboard.
Thanks again for all the help.
if other people also interested here is my opinion
i really like this phone and yes i would buy it again.
i was sad when motorola mobility get sold. that was the dead of droid series.
the quality of the phones are really good. like droid 3 iam in love. (i miss this rubbery back cover)
some years ago there was the samsung I927 but that plastic was feeling bad in my hands and it get sold fast.
u was angry that it will slips out of your hands when open the keyboard or was writing
the droid phones are lieing good in my hands only the nokia n97 (my first qwerty) was better because the diplay was in 45°
my xt897 already fall 2 or 3 times out of my hand on the ground and nothing happened
and i was able to rescue the phones everytime. the phone had no os installed and the battery was 0% but that wasnt a problem.
motorola also had great accessories.
like the lapdocks (support for newer android version is in work. but problem with compling the sources. but i think i know the problem if someone can help me and compling my idea pls contact me)
or power packs (if phone is really dead and there is no charger u can connect it and put both in your pocket. the battery in xt897 is embedded).
also the preformance of xt897 is enough. i not wanne play new high quality games on my phone. i not need 4 cores or something like that in my mobile phone. I like the hdmi jack more that is not found in other phones.
the only problem is that u can not buy a xt897 with sim-slot in a store. but CornholioGSM managed it
but motorla just rock !!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111
They are 93 dollars on Ebay brand new device. Worth every penny. I keep buying them. I have four or five now with cracked screens.
The problem I see as an European, the future is LTE and we cannot use that with this phone, since the frequencies are different than in the States. That is the bummer that will make this phone being replaced in a few years, if it holds that long.
LTE might be the future but as long as H and H+ are working i give a sh*t on LTE...
I'm a hardcore Keyboard-fan and i'm afraid as long as there are no newer devices with a physical keyboard (except Blackberry - i don't like their style) i will use the Q.
And althoug battery is very ****ty I love my Q - thx to all the developers of the AOSP-versions and thx to Cornholio for the SIM-Mod
droid 5
yes until the illusive droid 5 comes out.
