[Q] HTC Desire on Three UK - General Questions and Answers

Does anyone know if the HTC Desire is branded and locked on Three UK? A lot of people on Three have already updated, but someone told me that the new batches of the HTC Desire on Three are all locked and therefore can't yet be updated. I'm going to receive my upgrade on Wednesday, so does anyone know if this is the case?
Thanks
P.S. If I decide to unlock my phone and debrand it with a generic 2.2 ROM, will I have to use the Goldcard every time I want to update the software, or will I just be able to upgrade OTA like those with unlocked and debranded phones?

[Q] Unlocked HTC Desire and Froyo

Hi all. I'm new to all this after sacking my iphone in favour of the wonderful Desire a couple of weeks ago. I bought the phone on an O2 (UK) pay and go contract and have put my old iphone sim in which works fine. I am keen to get the 2.2 update so paid to unlock my phone having read that unlocked phones can get it now. However, my phone appears to be unlocked as I can use my wife's 3 sim in there but I still can't get the update yet. How do I do this? Do I need to put in a sim from a provider that has released the update already or is there another way round this? Any help would be appreciated as I am learning my way round what appears to be a great OS and phone, even though I appear to have wasted cash unlocking it!
Thanks, in advance.
Note to self-read the forums..!
I've seen how to do it via the Gold card method but would appreciate advice as to which ROM to use...I'm assuming as I'm branded to O2 the O2 specific one is correct? 124865?
I can't post links yet unfortunately.

[Q] moving phone carrier question?

I bought an Australian (Telstar) HTC Mozart to use in New Zealand as the hardware specs match the NZ Telecom network. Now I an really worried that as Telecom dont sell this phone they will never "release" an update and I'll eventually be stuck with a very old version of WP7.
Anyone got an ideas if this will be a problem or if my phone will see the Telstra update and grab that?
I have a dev account so if anyone knows how a dev can load the update directly then that would be great to hear...
Thanks
they will Telstra aren't really ones to stop it though i know that they haven't released the update yet. my sister has a mozart from telstra and hasn't gotten an update yet. just be patient. i'm pretty sure they just rolled it all into one.
I also bought a phone from germany and I'm using it in Portugal with diferent carrier and I got the update! So I think you shouldn't worry

But do you think it will update a phone running in NZ on a different network? Mt worry is that if teh carrier can block an update then that seems to suggest its tied to the phone + carrier combination. If i take a phone sold for an Australian carrier and use it in NZ then will it update?
In theory it should work as Telecom NZ provide the internet access and the phone is still branded Telstra. It still shows their NextG branding at start up etc but what if it doesn't?
I also cant think why developers are not allowed to run the update using dev only tools. How are we supposed to test our applications?
Seems a little up in the air. As for teh update I am patient and happy to wait but I really think MS need to explain stuff way more. Lots of people are complaining and that is bad for the image as a whole. A few more blog post from MS could really diffuse that.
Thanks for the feedback.

Yes. It's tied to the device+branding, so as long as Telstra releases the update you will get it.
The alternative is to unbrand your phone by flashing a non-branded (i.e. generic) ROM and you'll get the update as soon as MS seems fit rather than being dependant on any carriers.

[Q] Carrier vs. Manufacture Branding

Hello,
I have been wondering about the substantive difference between the carrier and manufacture branding, but couldn't find anything on google or here about this subject.
Basically, it's common knowledge that carrier-branded phones get updates when the carrier wants you to, but is there also a delay if the phone is not carrier branded but manufacture branded?
For example, I bought my HTC phone through retail so it is not branded by a carrier, but it still has the HTC branding on the phone. Does this mean that updates will be pushed whenever HTC decides to push it instead of as soon as Microsoft releases it?
If so, would it be worth flashing the ROM to get rid of the HTC branding too? Is this even possible? The threads on de-branding and flashing HTC phones seem to all link to HTC ROMs instead of generic Microsoft ones, do they even exist?
Thanks!

HTC ChaCha on Three (UK), Are all roms S-ON??

Hello, I have a HTC ChaCha and was wondering that there are some people who have S-OFF or use an XTC-Clip to root their handsets.
But unfortunately I was unaware of this 'S-ON' and I purchased a phone on contract for 24 months and now when it's time for ROMS - I'm stuck.
So, my question is are all editions of the HTC ChaCha on Three UK 'S-ON' or is there a way that I can grab an 'S-OFF' by swapping my phone.

Most all phones that leave the HTC factory are S-ON. You would have to be extremely, extremely lucky to get an S-OFF handset off the production line, in fact it'd be damn near impossible.
You can't get S-OFF by flashing another ROM.
I'm not sure if the rEVOlutionary software tool supports the ChaCha, you may have to find yourself a Clip (or someone nearby who could loan it to you) to gain S-OFF.
Good luck!

[Q] Sensation, O2 and Branding

Ok, so I have a kind of a weird issue here.
First of all, I want to make it clear: I do NOT want to S-OFF my Sensation, and I do NOT want to root my Sensation.
Ok so back to the point,
A little over a month ago, I bought a brand new HTC Sensation from a local retail store here in Malta. I paid full price for it, it was sealed, and it came sim-free from factory. Also, there was absolutely no apparent branding on it - not even in the deepest area of the phone.
I was happy, until I realised that my friend's Sensation updated to 2.3.4, whilst mine is stuck on 2.3.3. I contacted HTC, and they told me the reason is that I have an O2 UK branded phone (and O2 UK hasn't released the updates yet). I told them that mine is evidently (i.e. when using it) unbranded, at the shop I was told it's unbranded, there is no branding on it or the box at all, came SIM free and was sealed. HTC told me there is nothing I could do.
I feel frustrated at having a brand new phone, bought at full price, which I cannot update.
Browsing the Internet, I saw something about RUU. Is it possible to debrand the phone using RUU without ever making it S-OFF or rooting it? I want to keep it intact!
Also, if it is possible to debrand it with RUU, will it update OTA? Or am I stuck to RUU forever? (Since my IMEI shows up as branded with O2 on HTC's servers).
Or should I forget it? Or should I go to the shop and make him change the phone since it was paid for at full price (supposedly for an unbranded phone)?
Browsing the Internet, this seems to be my current software:
RUU_Pyramid_O2_UK_1.34.206.1_Radio_10.43a.9007.00U_10.51.9007.27_M3_release_196476_signed
Thanks

You have 3 options I guess:
i) live with it;
ii) Take it back and get a refund, "not what was promised", i.e. it turned out to be O2;
iii) S-OFF and change cid and install the latest RUU or any other custom ROM.
