Voicemail problems - Captivate General

Is anyone else having problems with voicemail setup on they captivates? Every time I try to check my voicemail I get a message about where the mailbox number, I enter my phone number and or says thee is no mailbox with that number. Also when my wife tries to call it just says that I'm not available and when I reject the call it does busy. Does any else have this issue?

Go take it to the AT&T store or call them, they forgot to move your voicemail over to the new device. Same thing happened to me.

1) thats not the first time ATT's goofed a VM access #.
2) Consider having your VM swapped to Google Voice, and using it only for VM, you'll still get most of the features plus text conversion and recording via the Voice app and website.

Use Google Voice instead. It is so much better anyway.

You do not have the proper phone number for your voicemail. This happens to me when I transfer phones around since I always forget to put the proper number on my sim card

If you came from a device with visual voicemail, you'll have to call customer care to get it switched back to basic voicemail.
Well, that, or use Google Voice.

Record your Voice mail # before upgrade to cm6

Just a heads up. When I upgraded to cm6 or Froyo 2.2 my Aria lost its ability to dial voice mail by pressing # 1. I had to call att customer service to get my special number and enter it under the call settings. No big deal but if you write it down ahead of time it will save you a phone call. BTW, I confessed to the att customer service person that I had upgraded to 2.2. Actually she kinda hinted that she knew what was up. I then asked here about any other issues and she said that this was the only one that they have been hearing about.
Also, if you are using vonage you will not be able to listen to your voice mails on the phone. For some reason the .wav file format is not supported properly on 2.2.
You can also enter your own phone number, and that works too

i like it alot, its simple to use because it is a visual voice mail and it also takes advantage of the voice to text so you can read your voicemails instead
this item will also prevent using TiKL over a mobile connection until you enter your phone number... which i did manually, and then all was well...

I didn't have to.
After installing 2.2, if you find yourself without the ability to access your Voicemail by holding down the 1 key on the Phone, then do the following
Go to Menu > Settings > Call settings > Call forwarding (at the very bottom)
You will see a phone number listed 3 times on this page. This is your voicemail access number. Write it down (including the +1 in front).
Go back to Call settings and select Voicemail settings (near the top) and set the voicemail number to the number you wrote down. Don't forget the leading "+1".
That's what I did and it works normally now, and I didn't have to call AT&T support or anything to find the number.

Q. Google voice and sms messages.

I was using goolge voice for voicemail on my Samsung epic. But when I started using it for my nexus my sms messages go to Google voice. How do I stop the text messages and keep the voicemail? Currently I disabled Google voice.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
Did you "integrate," migrate, port... whatever you wanna call it, your Sprint number over to Google Voice?
That's what I did, and while I liked the feature, I couldn't send or receive picture messages anymore.
I had to delete GV from my phone, sign up for a new GV account/ number, and then start all over from the beginning when I did this.
I clicked the update me link on the GV website to enable picture/ MMS in GV texting, for further updates to see if it becomes available. If in the future they give us the ability to send/ receive MMS/ picture messages through GV, I'll be going back. Until now, I'll stick with it just for voicemail usage.
All I've done to fix this is to log in to Google Voice on my computer and disable the "integration" with my cell phone number. This has done the trick for me many times when I change ROMs. I see that you already disabled the service, so I'm not sure why you would still be getting your text messages sent to GV.

Its one of the options on the computer, turn off SMS sent to phone option. Hope that's what you meant.
There a few guides here in the Nexus S forums on how to disable Google Voice for calls and texts while still getting VM through GV. Look around and you will find it. If I remember right you go to voice.google.com click on the gear in upper right hand corner of page and choos voice settings. Unport your Sprint # and get a new or use your already existing GV #. Then down by your Mobile number on the settings page click where it says activate google voicemail on this phone and follow instructions. Then change settings on your phone from My Carrier to Google Voice under voicemail and you should be good to go.

Google Voice not working very well.

Just got my Play today. White international version.
Im having terrible luck with google voice. I can't get to forward my calls through voice. I can't set it to receive texts through voice only. All I can do is revives calls when people call me. This is a bad issue. Does anyone else have any luck with Google voice? This could factor into a speedy return

"I can't get to forward my calls through voice." I'm not sure what you mean. You can't get it to take incoming calls to your Google Voice number and forward to your native number or you can't get it to take incoming calls top your native number and forward to Google Voice for voicemail? Mine pops up a dialog saying that it failed to forward native calls to GV voicemail but it actually works. Even if it didn't there's still a code I can dial in to do the same thing. Some carriers do not support it though. My boss could not use GV to forward his MetroPCS voicemail to. If you are saying that you want calls made to your native number to ring your GV number, that would not be a feature of GV. That would require you to set up forwarding through your carrier.
"I can't set it to receive texts through voice only." Uhh, it can't block texts sent to your native number. Block texting with your provider and tell people to forget your old non-GV number, then use the GV app to receive texts (setting it to also receive via native Messaging app will forward them to your mobile number as regular billable text messages despite the wording of the option). Forwarding native texts to GV is also something your carrier would have to do unless you could find some app to do it. It's not a GV function.
I should have been a bit more clear. Was in a flurry last night.
I've got most of it fixed. I ported my phone number to voice when I changed carriers. So everyone still calls that, then voice routes the call to any phone you want. When I call out from my Nexus, it goes through Google voice and on the other persons end it shows my Voice number instead of my "real" phone number.
My Xperia recieves calls fine now, but I cant get it to call out through Google voice. So people are seeing my "real" number instead of my voice number.
First world problems.

In the options for th GV app I set it to use GV for all outgoing calls. If I have a poor signal or weak WiFi, it causes it to hang on some intermediary screen before the dialer pops up so it is using Internet data for that step. If you can't enable the option, I'd check your cellular data settings.
Oh yeah. Ive got that set up. Been using voice for over a year now. Play just doesn't seem to like it as much.
In a completely unrelated note, this phone has amazing battery life

The only issue I have on my PLAY is the error saying that I can't enable voicemail forwarding even though it does enable it and forward just fine (the setting still shows that my carrier is handling VM). Even then, I think it's a problem with AT&T still having something configured wrong from my iPhone plan with VVM. Also, my battery would die in 8 hours of leaving the device locked on the stock AT&T ROM but, luckily, you never had to deal with that.
Got it all figured out.
Rooted the phone and removed a bunch of bloat. Phone is amazing now! I love you XDA.
Ok so Im not trying to change the subject, but does anyone get googles video chat to work without huge lag? I bought my girlfriend a Xperia play right after I got mines & installed video talk (via Video Talk Installer) & also the GTalkEnabler (to enable "Talk" over mobile data) & attempted both video & voice chat. My voice chat worked well over wifi & mobile, but the video chat was almost impossible due to lag on AT&Ts HSPA/Almost kinda 4g & not much better on wifi. With both XPlay's on wifi the video jumped frames and had green or pink pixel boxes & voice was lagged over 5 seconds. This makes the front cam & video chat useless. Whats the deal with this??

[Q] Google Voice for VM on US TMO 1S

So I got my wife a new HTC One S to replace her HD2 which she had cracked the screen (Worked fine, but good excuse to get a look at a new phone). Everything set up fine, and is working well, but I can't seem to set up Google Voice for VM. Visual VM works (from TMO) but I use and love Google voice on my phone, as it sends you texts with the transcribed message.
If anyone can shed some light on this, every time I change it from my carrier to Google voice on the settings menu (Settings | Calls I think) it gives me an error and stays set to my carrier. Anyone have any ideas.
I have not rooted this phone yet, and as it is the wife's wasn't planning on it, but would like to get Google voice working for voicemail if at all possible. \
Any thoughts/ideas?? I am hoping someone here may know a work around or fix for this...
I also have the same problem. Normally I'd just install a new ROM without the bloatware, but it doesn't appear any are all that stable yet. Will rooting the phone allow you to uninstall stuff like TMobile's apps without having to put on a new ROM?
Anyway, I'm also curious about using Google's Voice.
It is the only issue I have left. I have been doing some research, calling t-mobile and turning off their VM may fix it, but I haven't had to do that on any other phone, so it is my last resort. Hoping someone else here has solved this, or done what I suggested, and validated it as a fix. If all else fails, by the end of the weekend, I will try that approach. Just seems odd that it is locked.
I have also tried *004*[google number here]# with an mmi code error, and **004*[google number here]# which did register, but then reverted just as quickly, when I went to settings|calls to review [I saw it show Google voicemail, only to change instantly back to My carrier]
My GV is still active on my phone from my Sensation and the only thing I did was a Titanium Restore of the GV app. I went into my settings on the One S and it says My Carrier but I just had someone test it and it came through just fine through GV. I would go into your settings in GV on the computer and make sure your phone is set up for VM in there and if it still doesn't work set it up on the old phone and just restore the app if you're rooted.
Good luck!

To avoid issues, I want to avoid rooting. It's the Wife's phone, and if I do anything to it, and she has a problem, I get blamed, even though we all know rooting isn't necessarily bad, and if she has a problem, it is probably the user, not the phone At the end of the day, I will root it if that is the only way to fix this, but I would think a Google phone should support GV out of the box, especially such an integrated feature within ICS. There must be some solution... although it is increasingly looking like I will have to call t-mobile, and remove Visual VM, to get GV to work... Just hoping to avoid that if possible too, as stated before, never had to do that, and always like a backup...
Hoping someone else has solved this and can share their solution. And before anyone asks, it is not a pre-paid plan, which I know has issues...
Found this on another forum, not sure if I can post the link, and it is too late for me to give it a try, but here is the other post, for anyone who wants to give it a shot. Having posted this, there still must be a way to do this without calling t-mobile...
So here's the scoop. Apparently, HTC has disabled the ability to change the voicemail carrier from the device itself. Probably some ploy to get users to use some other service or app. F That. I buy Android phones for a REASON. Anyways...
Here's the fix. Call T-Mobile support. Explain that you need to have the number changed on THEIR end. Just read them the Google Voice number over the phone and have them test it. And voilĂ ! Hope this helps!

I had them code my Wife's Google Voice number as the conditional forwarding number (which is actuallt the Voice Mail number on the phone), and haven't had any issues since. If you don't know your number, it should show up on your GV homepage. Once you do that, everything works as it should.

I used their online chat and the rep switched my conditional forwarding to my GV number. Phone still says My Carrier, and it actually worked fine before, but did it just on principal...locking this down just to get a few more bucks from their own crap VV app is just wrong.

Rather than trying to switch the voice mail access number from 'My Carrier' to 'Google Voice' (which fails every time), just change the voice mail access number of the 'My Carrier' option to your Google Voice number, and then manually change the 3 forwarding options to your GV number also. Long press '1' will now access GV VM, and unanswered calls will roll to GV VM.
The easiest thing is do the normal steps, when it tells you it fails do not hit OK or Cancel. Just hold power and restart the phone. When you boot back Google voice will be properly selected and it will work correctly.

AT&T has a new thing called AT&T Messages.
Once you install and go through the steps, it migrates your voicemail from VVM to the new format.
In the new format, it will both transcribe right to the phone and make the recording playing from the phone(in case the transcribe didn't work too well - depends on the caller and how noisy it is)
I installed it just for that, and use SMSpro for regular texting.
The other "benefit" is that it will enable you to text from a pc via the online messaging system(and it backs up your texts in the cloud) - handy if you ever forget your phone at home and need to send a text.
I know google voice does soemthing similar, but might be worth a shot.
