Why the unreal expectations? - General Topics

Something has been bugging me lately. The whole consumer thing for massive phone screens with insanely high res, ludicrously fast processors, 3d and graphics.
For me, a screen larger then 3.2" would be too big for my pockets. So how can people have 4" screened phones and deal with them? Do you guys with leos just have really big pockets or something ? I had a go at the leo, and it bothered me that i needed to use two hands, cause my thumb couldnt get to the x button. It doesnt feel practical to have a screen that big.
I know a guy that is waiting for a phone with a 5" capacitive AMOLED screen with 1280x720px res, 1.5ghz snapdragon and 1gb ram. I told him to go buy an ipad or a android tablet.
Can someone tell me what the pull is with these phones, what is so good about them?
[/rant]

I feel quite comfortable with my Leo, fits perfect on my daily work/pleasure style
For Leo you need to have big hands to operate it with 1

Closest thing to a mobile computer, I guess. However, some of the larger phones are very, very slim. The Droid X is unfathomably slim, yet also really, really wide. The trend is probably going to back down to smaller devices- the HTC Aria's main selling point on all its ads is the tiny size of the device.
Of course, on touch only phones, size is a huge factor when you consider that the keyboard is only as big as the screen is.

Yes I have to say I don't mind slim phones, I loved the size and thickness of my elf, and I kind of miss it in that respect. Also aserp, you are right in saying about the keyboard. It is kinda difficult to type fast with the regular keyboard. However, I prefer using my stylus with SlideIt, it works well and blew my friends minds how fast I can type with it.

That's true- Swype (or SlideIt) has really changed touch-screen 'typing'. I've been thinking about buying a new phone for a while, but remind myself that there's no phone out there that runs Android, is GSM, and has a hardware keyboard. (Well, okay, the Backflip, but that kinda sucks ;/)

What's your perfect device/form factor?

Mine would be as follows:
Form Factor:
Similar to My Mogul that I have now. The Keyboard is perfect, the slide is perfect. The size is perfect (could maybe be a little thiner, but that might make the hinge less sturdy). The weight is just about right, but I could go for a little lighter. What I'd really like is for the screen to be moved up a little and to have a full numeric keypad on the front kinda like the HTC Wings (might have to make it a little longer, but I can deal with that). This would make one hand operation easier and would allow for one handed text messaging. Also, I'd like for the screen to be flush with the device (like the touch) and not recessed. This screen would also have to be no smaller than 2.8 inches, though I'd really like to see a 3.5 like the iPhone. Finally, I'd like a hardware switch for switching the phone to vibrate. Other than that, I love the form factor of my mogul.
Specs:
I'm not too specific on the specs. I just want it so that the device will always be almost immediately responsive (again like the iPhone). The delay on the UI is "Garbage!!" (I'm an Oklahoma State University alumni, so I got to quote Mike Gundy). Hopefully that will get resolved with HTC soon enough.
As for the rest, I'd want the norm of GPS, Wifi, 3G/4G internet, a long battery life like that of the iPhone, microSD (I had been pissed new formats on each new device, but they are so cheap now it's stupid to complain), a quality camera (mega-pixel is less important than quality), a VGA cam on the front for video conferencing (just would be fun), and finally and most importantly a VGA resolution screen!!! We are long overdo for something better than QVGA and it looks like this year will finally begin to bring it.
OS:
Windows Mobile 6.1 would be fine for starters, but what I really want to see is Android on there. However, once Google publicly releases the Code they'll be porting to every decently popular device out there, so I'm sure I'd be fine on that.
Anyway, that's what I want. I can't really think of a much better device. They've already gotten pretty good, but there is a little ways yet to go. The two things I want the most are that numeric keypad on the front and the VGA resolution screen.
Of all the devices I have ever held, the Touch felt the best in my hands. I haven't see a TC yet, but something about that touch.
My first "geekphone" was the motorola e680i, still one the best non wm phones out there. It had something every touchscreen phone should have, a hardware switch to lock the device. infinitely useful and brilliantly simple.

Anything Comparable to the iPhone Coming Out On the WM Side?

I am looking to replace my Trinity and right now the iPhone is the top contender (I am with AT&T anyway.)
But I'd love to keep the flexibility I get from WM, and have finally made my Trinity rock solid (it hasn't crashed in weeks
The big thing for me is the screen, I like 3.5 and I like the resolution - the Omnia just doesn't look as good to me, plus its screen is smaller.
Is HTC, or someone else, coming out with something new, soon, which will have the screen, the memory (16gb is good) and is also a decent looking phone?
Anyone know?

Uh wtf?
Anyways. Back on topic. WAIT FOR THE AT&T TOUCH PRO. Nuff said.
Silly wabbit! iPhones are for kids.... Any anyone else without enough brain matter to operate a WM device.
If there is too much time on your contract to bail, I'd say wait for the Touch!
Unfortunately, the Touch Pro only has a 2.8" screen, which is a big disadvantage, compared to the 3.5" screen on the iPhone.
I am looking for at least 3.5".
(and since I had my Wizard, I've decided that slider keyboards are useless to me.)
For a screen that size you will need something like a Sedna.
I personally just got the I900. I had an IPhone for a month and I definitely prefer the Omnia I900. However it only has a 3.2" screen and you want 3.5".
I would have gotten a Sedna as I wanted a bigger screen, but at the last minute I got an Omnia and I am really happy with it.
The Touch Pro looks nice, that would probably be my second choice. The omnia has the best on screen keyboard I have seen so far. It not particularly special in any way other than the fact that it works well in Portrait and in landscape with the autmatic rotate function I can rapidly get precise, fast two thumb typing going by just rotating the phone (assuming I have two hands free.)
I have iTouch and have to say that I love it`s touch-screen accuracy, much better than in wm-phones with 2.8" screen, it is just so tiny compared to 3.5" screen.. I usualy do wlan with wmwifirouter and browse net using iTouch since it has bigger resolution and 3.5" screen which doesn`t need stylus + Safari is fast !
One thing what I don`t understand is this 2.8" Wmphonemania, why are they not making 3.5" screens on them ? And 3.2mp cameras are oldish, I love N95 5mp camera, it just takes so good shots, I am jealous :>
But either Symbian or iPhone`s OS, cannot beat WinMo as an operating system :X

like for sex size doen't matter... the real problem is: what will be your use of your next phone...
i have tried both one week (iPhone3g and diamond) and i goes diamond because iPhone is too much limited for my use... try both and see what will be your's
How about the Dream?
I am amazed that noone mentioned the HTC Dream. The first Android phone to hit the market will be released on October 13th. Check it out.
Anything Comparable to the iPhone Coming Out On the WM Side? (Quote)
Just surf this forum and you will find a lot of nice options:
HTC G1
HTC HD
etc...
This was exactly the question I was working on for a number of months. Although I also added in, "And won't cost me an arm and a leg".
It finally came down to the Daxian T32/x999+ (Chinese iPhone-ish clone) and the HTC Blue Angel. If the T32 had some buttons that could be used in gaming like the HTC I would've gone with that I think, but I got the HTC Blue Angel instead and it's great.
Of course this is my first PDA, so maybe I'm easily impressed.
Anything else out there either costs WAY too much or has a much smaller screen, or even both. It's too bad nobody is taking the Blue Angel and reworking it with today's technology to make it sleeker and better. Great little machine so far!
http://gizmodo.com/5047830/htc-touch-hd-looks-big-and-beautiful
How about this?
I think it's called HTC Touch HD. Don't know if HD stands for High Definition.
Anyway, this phone for sure has your requirement of 3.5 screen.

HTC Touch Pro2

What do you think?
There aren't much changes compare to the HTC Touch Pro... It's a real turn off for me. I don't even feel like I want to change phone.
- Different Design (I prefer the diamond back cover)
- The Tilt is back (YAY!).
- Bigger Screen, 3.6" instead of 2.8", and it's thinner
- It's Heavier than the HTC Touch Pro
- Processor "Qualcomm® MSM7200A™, 528 MHz" Instead of "Qualcomm® MSM7201A™, 528 MHz" (Same Speed thou)
- Memory and RAM are the same (Disappointed)
- Faster Download Speed, Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz (no America yet, but I'm sure they will come up with something)
- Camera is the same (so disappointed)
I was so eager to change phone from the Tilt to Touch Pro, but not to this phone... Except for the bigger Screen. The Good new is the phone seem to be cheap. So is it time to sell my Fuze yet?

And additionnaly, there's no more D-PAD.
That's the same reason why I didn't go for the Touch HD.
I don't understand this "everything touch" trend.
I love the touchscreen, but I like being able to use the D-PAD for gaming, scrolling through list items and then "right clicking" an item, etc.

x2.
I hate not having a D-Pad. What if I don't want to smudge up my screen? A D-pad is a must-have for me.
I replaced an iPhone and a Tilt with a Touch Pro (Fuze) and I *really* miss the larger screen of the iPhone and the ability to tilt the screen. From everything I've read, I will be buying a TP2 as soon as it's available in the US for less than a fortune. Slingplayer will look fabulous on it, I'm sure.
The "everything touch" trend is real easy to understand. iPhone. Period. If it wasn't for Apple, I'd probably have gotten a new one instead of opting for a Fuze. But since Apple insists on treating iPhone users as if they're retarded, I moved on.
I love the bigger screen design but would miss the D-pad, love the tilt (but it is another thing to break) but i dont like the lack of new features (camera the same, same processor speed, same ram, same memory???) seems like they are tryin to pull a iPhone 3G on us... same phone minor improvements
How well do you suppose the camera will function? Do you think we will be able to learn anything from the Touch Pro 2 camera code/functionality that will help us improve the original Touch Pro camera?

camera is not exactly the same as it wont have a flash, even more disappointing.
the tilting screen is a great thing, as i really miss the tilting screen of the tilt (kaiser)
Not worth it for me...
For me it's simple...
SAME camera (with no 30fps video)
+ SAME processor speed
+ SAME RAM
+ NO enhanced graphics
+ NO fixed GPS lag
----------------
Waste of $$$
Even when and IF they come out with a US 3G model, my money will be staying in my wallet.
And it's stil on WM6.1, so disapointed.
I'm getting bore of my Fuze, I want to change to a new phone, but there isn't any good reason for me to do so... I'm so bored
For me, the return of the tilt screen and a large screen itself make it worth my money. The camera is nothing to me, I use a real camera anyway. What price marks are we seeing for this phone?
While I appreciate the bigger screen, I am not sure how responsive the device would be with higher resolution and same processor since we all know HTC doesn't believe in video acceleration / drivers in business phones.
TP2 is the reason my TP will live longer in my pocket, plus I am looking for other brands (AGAIN).
WHERE IS MY D-PAD!?
...and why limit it to 3.2MP when every other model has 5?
...and where is the flash!?
No thanks.

I don't care much about camera either, but I care a lot about the speed. However, i agreed with you for the big screen...
Anyway, to answer your question about the price, this website is selling it for $750, which I think it's reasonable for a new phone. Check before you buy, I think it only works for Europe and Asia so far.
The bigger screen and the Tilt feature are big pluses for me, but the lack of D-pad is just weird. Also, I have a strong feeling that 2009 and 2010 will reveal alot of amazing devices from other manufacturers...plus HTC might release somethign else that is better. I currently have a Fuze and I think I will just wait. I want to see how WM7 pans out. I sold my iPhone for $400 and I'm saving the money for something that really deserves it. If I still had my Tilt, I would probably upgrade to the TP2, but from a Fuze to a TP2 doesn't make much sense to me.
Well...HTC lost me on this TP2. Not this time...
I honestly like the first Touch Pro more. I don't like the roundedness...I prefer sharp angles. It looks too fat lol.
I love the new Tilt design, it looks more tilted, but I personally prefer the diamond sharp on the back of my Fuze. And the USB slot look too UGLY, it's just coming out too much. I take back what I said about the Camera, I do use the camera on my device a lot lately, mostly because of the fast upload to Facebook.

Seeing the big screen on this youtube, really make me want it now
Gimme your advice about the D-PAD problem : what do you use instead of it, for example for gaming and so on ? I mean, if you want to control some game emulator, do you use on screen buttons ? As the current devices are not multitouch (I don't want to speak about some well known IwannabeaPHONE), i don't think these are suitable for proper gaming.
Maybe the simple answer is "I don't use my device for gaming...".
What do you think ?
"Some" emulator programs allow onscreen virtual Dpads... but without multitouch, you'll be unable to simultaneously press onscreen buttons.
All games are different though. Some are simply point and click games which don't require a dpad. Others work well without a Dpad.
Most games will flat out be impossible to use.
I came from the Samsung Epix with its Optical Dpad/Mouse... to the Fuze for the Dpad. I later found that the Dpad isn't really a Dpad... but a touchscreen with optical sensors (which is why the Dpad on the fuze sucks; but at least it is a functioning dpad).
I swore my next phone will have a physical dpad and a jog wheel.

I'm surprised how few WM devices have a jog wheel; my last one was a FSC Loox 720 and a jog wheel was one of its major positive points back then. It hardly seems like it would be an expensive or difficult control to add, but I guess it's not free and so there's something for HTC to gain by not including one.
I also prefer the diamond back of the Touch Pro, not that the Vario IV has it anyway though (not clear why they had to change that).

Realizing why I just can't buy the TG01

I reviewed a few new devices in pdadb.net today and felt jealous.
the TG01 is obviously a stronger device than any HTC device in the market.
There are actually only two reasons to why i can't purchase it (and why i bought an HD second hand from a member of xda-devs). The reasons are that there's no Xda-devs support for non-HTC devices and that the battery is 1000mA (which is nothing less than pathetic).
Being an active member of Xda-devs makes it impossible to even think of other devices (and while it sounds like it's a bad thing, we all know it is impossible to support all devices in the world). the iPhone feels like a joke and while the TG01 feels like god, without software perfection, ROM cooking, direct device support.. theme and skin creation.. modding.. and so forth, I would feel naked having a device which isn't supported by the biggest PDA community in the world.
I wish HTC figured out it's mid 2009 and upgraded.
I mean.. ****.. a 1000Mhz processor is a freaking stable pentium 3 (by the way, the most stable processor ever presented (electronicallywise) is considered to be the pentium 3 1000). Having a 4.1 screen on a device which isn't much larger than the HD.. is very thin... good looking.. is like a dream. If not only for saying I don't have a Qualcomm processor.. i'd get the TG01.
From here on.. it's all tragedy. It's somewhat of an analogy to not being able to buy a perfect device because your network doesn't support it.
To be completely honest, I think it's a disgrace that the Touch HD runs on a 528Mhz processor instead of a 628.. and that the Rhodium and Diamond 2 have the same one.
Anyways.. just pointing out the obvious.
Think of the first device you ever had. Think of how it was before you first got involved with this forum.. and think of the after image.
Think of the second device you bought.. and do the same.
...........the day i stepped into this place, i virtually got married. for bad or for good.
mostly for good.
i kinda feel the same way but i am looking at the new Toshiba model with a keyboard.
well there is always my site.
i'm not buying the Toshiba TG01 cus it a freaking BRICK!
we got to stop buying their freaking BRICK!
otherwise they going to make cellphone BIGGER AND BIGGER!
how about TG01+, it' only .5" bigger, .....at 4.6" screen.
then TG01++, it' only 1" bigger! ............ at 5.6" inches!
then SUPER TG01 only 1.3" bigger!.....at 7" screen!
if we dont stop buying their junk, they going try to sell you a 7" cellphone! haha
All you really miss out on are the roms. Almost everything else is somewhat universal
I agree though, the battery capacity is half of what mine is and the phone is 5 times as fast with a bigger screen. Very lame.
Thickness is more important than the other 2 dimensions, IMO. It's not a brick cuz it's actually thinner than the iphone.
Dont worry future is orange lol
Hi all, hope everyone is well
@ nir36
I wish I could be more appreciative and less critical of the level of elitism that is now being shown by XDA-DEVS but.....its evolution lol
I have been around here since....2003 or something (viewing) - since I got my original SPV and my mate had an original XDA - what a marvel of tech they were lol....and things have swung right around.
I remember being a modaco member and being much more active over there as XDA - DEVS was not such a user forum but more of a dev forum. Buzz lightyear and co made waves and I(we - most people) surfed along - downloaded and experienced as opposed to inputing lol....
Back then HTC were the ONLY (in general) company that made decent PDA's - they were the only company that actually sold them through service providers in the UK and so had a complete strangle hold on the MArket. If you wanted a GSM windows mobile then you had to get an XDA/MDA/SPV - all HTC......
Now things are different in many many ways.
XDA devs is now as much a user forum as a Dev forum.
How many times do you see rude people dissing newbies - dont post here dont ask - Are you stupid why cant you search etc. Pointless elitism. Just help if you can or shutup maybe lol? Of course Ban trolls.....
Also Windows mobile phones are now available from a number of carriers all from different manufacturers......
So, when I got my Omnia (now sold, back to WM 6.5 HTC advantage/N95 8GB combo) I was naturally shocked to hear that XDA were refusing to have a device section for it.....
I was baffled - Omnia is the best small Win mobile device I have ever used in terms of all round ability. It has spot on hardware, very good media capabilities.
Many many users here got one and wanted a device section. It almost destroyed my faith in the device as I realised the level of commaraderie and support would not exist (so I thought)
There were polls and questionaires etc - everyone wanted OMnia to have its own section but it wouldnt come.......
I used to think that HTC paid XDA devs and actually gave us all more rights than others when it came to new builds and ROMS etc.....but now I realise that HTC were the Pioneers and there was no point having a site dealing with win mo specific (not HTC specific) as HTC WERE WINDOWS MOBILE!! When people used to search for Win mo it was either for IPAQ or XDA as that was ALL THERE WAS widely available.
Then I realised that XDA devs is not all there is to the world of Windows Mobile.......there are many many forums with huge numbers of devs all churning out ROMS
So what I am getting to here - is that the hardware should be our driving force! We should get the best hardware wise devices and all work together where - ever we have to and apply the fixes and builds from here - to other devices!!
www.omnia.com (or similar) is a great resource and it willl only get better. I expect the same for all new gen devices. We are the users. We are the drivers. If enough people all buy TG01's and club together to buy one for example CMONEX/MITCHYPRIMA or who ever (someone interested in the device lol) then we will get ROMS and the future is orange.
So get a TG01 (- me too if Omnia HD and N97 are both pointless, I can see no reason to get a touch pro 2 - where is my 3.5"?? Where is my direction pad? - duh!? -)
God damn it we will start a forum together club in buy some devices and flash until I am bored or happy.....
Toshiba and Samsung sales must be looking over here and saying to them selves - this type of community is the future, it drives sales for the platform.
Hopefully a bigger all in one Windows Mobile forum will start somewhere that will garner support from all users here and all other locations.....
We are all getting more out of Windows mobile as we rip from device to device........seems logical the next step is to include all manufactureres....
What I don't like about HTC is thier market policy. I'm not the type who is going to buy an expensive device with an expensive contract. I want to buy my phones from real, authorised distributors, just like I do with all the PC parts I use in the PCs I sell. Getting an HTC device here in Hungary is way too expensive right now.
is there no chance of having a forum dedicated to non-htc devices? because if the superstar can't match up well against the tg01, i'm going with the tg01. and i'd hate to lose this great wealth of knowledge here
Well, nvidia will make sure that snapdragon won't be better (if not then. At least in 3D and watching videos with anything other than WMP
If the community is strong enough it will make it's own forum.
I would buy the TG01, hopefully some other site will support the ROMs for it, but I'm stuck between it and the Omnia HD . . .

I love big screens! 2.8" VGA screens hurt my eyes, and 3.5-4" is the sweet spot for size versus clarity. A thin device with a small bezel and a 4" wide screen can still fit in a pocket.

If you like small screens, why not appeal to HTC to make some 2 inch ones specially for you? I think that most of us like bigger screens cuz we're cool like that.
The PPC big screens are great for GPS, Movies, Internet, Touch, Pics, etc...with them I don't have to carry around a PC laptop! That's why the HD, Iphonie, and soon the TGxx are the most popular devices.

I am a fan of clamshell type devices, so having a big device is a trade off. I don't mind a big device as long as it will still fit in a big pocket or pouch. I agree that a 7 inch screen is too big. I believe it should not be bigger than a 5 inch screen, it can be made a little longer though.

I think 5 inch is proably stretching it if you want it as a phone (as in hold it to your ear).
The TG01 is already pushing, but slimness helps. If you had a device same size as TG01 but less of it is border, then you would effectively have 4.5 inch maybe.

For those of you who are a bit younger, I should also point out that back in the 90s, ALL devices were HUGE and where weighting more than 1 kilo

[Q] your view of dual screen android

I am one of the donkey in a small company working to develop our first android tablet with dual screen.
S\dince this will be our first flagship android device, we would like to make sure our device match the needs of our future customer.
It will be a 7" dual screen device as title stated.
The machine is planned to be
- Dual core CPU, for instance by Samsung
- 512MB DDR3 and 1GB SLC
- dual touch on both screen
- swappable battery
- back-flipping screen
- 5/8Mpixel camera and 720p camcoder
- target to sell around 450usd
- target to weight 700g less
We love to hear from our customer, as we did for all our other products. Please feel free to comment, or simply kick my ass if you totally disagree with the concept, we are more than happy to have our ass kicked in order to prevent making a device no one will buy.
Is it two 7 inch screens? Or two 3.5 inch screens?
Does it close in the same way as the DS, so both screens are facing each other?
Could be a great concept. A tablet that fits in your pocket.
it should be 2 7" screen, we take consideration of cost, weight, and usability, since it is a 360 back-flipping machine, there is no concept of "closing" it, it can be both facing in, or both facing out.
Sorry folks if it's just me being particularly dumb. But I'm not getting it.
It it like the screen on the Dell Inspiron Duo? Are the screens on a swivel so one can face the back?
Have you got a link to something similar?
love the idea. That price range would be perfect too. I would be looking for one that can make phone calls too.
Being able to make phone calls is the deal breaker for me. Don't know why more tablets can do this.
And your device should be 8mp at least. 5 is too little for a high end device now a days.
Personally I love this idea!
If you have to cut corners, cut on the camera. 5/8 mp on a dualscreen tablet is not necessary at all. Take the iPad route to save money, go with a cheaper camera.
Some phones have more RAM than 512MB, so if this is a tablet ideally youd want more than that
Thanks a lot for the reply.
Seems there is no similar one in the market. Think of a door that can be push or pull 360 degree.
A 5MP is costing less then the dual core, but 8MP seems out of budget, we can even support up to 12MP, but the point is the image quality.
Yes it has 3G, HSPA+, can dial, as a speaker phone, and connects to headset. We are trying to make a all in one tablet for sure.
We think 512MB suits the current needs, considering my X10i has never less than 80MB free. More ram means more current draw.
Not knocking the idea, I'm just interested if anyone has any ideas on what uses a dual screen device like this would have? Smaller size for mobility is one, but I'm looking for usage ideas. How would you use the two screens effectively/differently than a single screen?
Watching a video on one screen, while doing something productive on the other, would that be possible?
Keep in mind that your device should be competitively priced to sell well. Look at the asus transformer. Selling like hot cakes.
Personally, the idea of it isn't terrible but I don't think I would use it. It's not something I want in a phone.
I think I owe everyone a thanks. So here it is
@dquille there are many usage in a dual screen device, social sharing is one, multi-tasking is two, some little more piracy maybe, all depends on how you use it, just like single vs dual core CPU.
@Zaigham it can be done, but personally I dont think anyone can work like this, my example will be, say, reading a excel file while typing message? But we look on social sharing more, you will see what we are talking when more information can be given.
@DPMAce yes we totally understand this point, but thats too early for us
@vbetts thanks for the info, in my opinion phone is secondary nowadays
