Its that new phone time again. Recommendations for Orbit/Armatis replacement?

I've been buying HTC devices every year since the very first XDA came out. Normally its a simple affair, just ring up O2 and order the next model out but there's so many to choose from now and this year I'm just spoiled for choice.
I'm currently using an Orbit which I really love, it has just about everything I need. About the only improvements I would make is 3G, VGA, more memory, faster processor. So whats available? There seem so many to choose from these days.
I know the iphone is a pile of crap but you must admit it looks good. Don't HTC do a similar style i.e. all screen and fewer buttons?

Anyone got any opinions?
Top of the pops at the moment is the Athena but I think it may be too big for my pocket. Is there anything with a similar spec only smaller yet?

How about Orbit II ?
Has everything you want, except VGA display...

Yep the Orbit 2 will be my next phone.
The iPhone is very very tempting, and regardless of what hardcore WM fans say, its a very fast, fluid interface and is generally what the public want to see from a touch phone, as proved by its massive sales figures,
Buuuuuuuut the orbit 2 has built in GPS, decent 400mhz proccessor, 3G, flush screen, 3MP auto focusing camera, with video, a second smaller camera on the front for video calls, loads of ram. Go for the Orbit 2 for the time been, get the iphone version 2 in a few years as its probly gunna take over the world lol.

I assume we're talking about the Polaris or Touch Cruise?
Didn't realize it was also referred to as the Orbit 2. Does that mean it will be released by O2 in the UK? Any idea when? (I know the Cruise has been put back to mid Jan)
Anyway I've decided to get a second hand Athena for now (no new contract). I've always wanted VGA and TV out. If I can't get on with the size then I'll get the Orbit2 or Cruise when it arrives.

Hello, I had the same dilemma, I have this phone for a whole year, I never had a phone for so long, but there is nothing really better out there to replace it with.
I thing the best thing if you don't need keyboard is the Cruise, and I guess I'll have to wait for it.
I think it's a good choice because it has all what this phone has plus 3G and flush screen.
The fact that it does not have VGA does not bother me, because VGA at this tiny screen does look better, but you can't really use it in the VGA resolution it's just too small for the eyes. All the other VGA phones just emulate a 320x240 screen, so it looks much nicer, but not more than that.
I tried a whole bunch of phones, I had the iPhone for almost a month, and it is really great, it is fast, smooth, beautiful and great at what it does, but it does not do much, if you are used to use a lot of the functions of the pocket pc you realize that the iphone almost worthless.
I also had the E-Ten x800 lately, I used it for about an hour and got rid of it, it is painfully slow, I couldn't get it to play a movie normally, it does not make sense, it has 520mhz cpu and it is still extremely slow, also I didin't like the way it looks at all. The VGA screen is good but there is no major difference, and I didin't try 3G in it.
I also have the Gigabyte Gsmart i350 right now, it's nice and small, very fast and has VGA screen, it also has GPS, I really like it but the lack of 3G is a real setback, it does not even have edge, only GPRS wich makes it really slow internet browsing.
One more important thing is the company that makes the phones, there is no such good quality as HTC, the build, the feel, and quality of calls, it beats every onther company out there.
Also this site makes me get only HTC phones, there is no such a site with so much support and options for your phone, with so many great people working and helping each other!!!!!
The bottom line is that the Cruise seems to be the best combination of all the features that are out there, VGA would make it a killer of a phone, but after playing with some VGA phones I don't think it makes such a big difference, also a lot of the apps out there don't support VGA screen, I think in a couple of months there will be a much better support for it.
I hope that my little thoughts and mini reviews will help you with your decision.

The Kaiser is great, but if I could do it again or had the bux to spare, I'd go with a Polaris.
I hardly ever use the Kaiser keyboard and the fm radio on the Polaris sounds like an interesting addition. Other than that, the feature sets (between Kaiser & Polaris) are identical.

There aren't much changes compare to the HTC Touch Pro... It's a real turn off for me. I don't even feel like I want to change phone.
- Different Design (I prefer the diamond back cover)
- The Tilt is back (YAY!).
- Bigger Screen, 3.6" instead of 2.8", and it's thinner
- It's Heavier than the HTC Touch Pro
- Processor "Qualcomm® MSM7200A™, 528 MHz" Instead of "Qualcomm® MSM7201A™, 528 MHz" (Same Speed thou)
- Memory and RAM are the same (Disappointed)
- Faster Download Speed, Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz (no America yet, but I'm sure they will come up with something)
- Camera is the same (so disappointed)
I was so eager to change phone from the Tilt to Touch Pro, but not to this phone... Except for the bigger Screen. The Good new is the phone seem to be cheap. So is it time to sell my Fuze yet?

I love the touchscreen, but I like being able to use the D-PAD for gaming, scrolling through list items and then "right clicking" an item, etc.

I hate not having a D-Pad. What if I don't want to smudge up my screen? A D-pad is a must-have for me.

I replaced an iPhone and a Tilt with a Touch Pro (Fuze) and I *really* miss the larger screen of the iPhone and the ability to tilt the screen. From everything I've read, I will be buying a TP2 as soon as it's available in the US for less than a fortune. Slingplayer will look fabulous on it, I'm sure.
The "everything touch" trend is real easy to understand. iPhone. Period. If it wasn't for Apple, I'd probably have gotten a new one instead of opting for a Fuze. But since Apple insists on treating iPhone users as if they're retarded, I moved on.

I love the bigger screen design but would miss the D-pad, love the tilt (but it is another thing to break) but i dont like the lack of new features (camera the same, same processor speed, same ram, same memory???) seems like they are tryin to pull a iPhone 3G on us... same phone minor improvements

How well do you suppose the camera will function? Do you think we will be able to learn anything from the Touch Pro 2 camera code/functionality that will help us improve the original Touch Pro camera?

camera is not exactly the same as it wont have a flash, even more disappointing.
the tilting screen is a great thing, as i really miss the tilting screen of the tilt (kaiser)

For me it's simple...
SAME camera (with no 30fps video)
+ SAME processor speed
+ SAME RAM
+ NO enhanced graphics
+ NO fixed GPS lag

While I appreciate the bigger screen, I am not sure how responsive the device would be with higher resolution and same processor since we all know HTC doesn't believe in video acceleration / drivers in business phones.

TP2 is the reason my TP will live longer in my pocket, plus I am looking for other brands (AGAIN).

I don't care much about camera either, but I care a lot about the speed. However, i agreed with you for the big screen...
Anyway, to answer your question about the price, this website is selling it for $750, which I think it's reasonable for a new phone. Check before you buy, I think it only works for Europe and Asia so far.

The bigger screen and the Tilt feature are big pluses for me, but the lack of D-pad is just weird. Also, I have a strong feeling that 2009 and 2010 will reveal alot of amazing devices from other manufacturers...plus HTC might release somethign else that is better. I currently have a Fuze and I think I will just wait. I want to see how WM7 pans out. I sold my iPhone for $400 and I'm saving the money for something that really deserves it. If I still had my Tilt, I would probably upgrade to the TP2, but from a Fuze to a TP2 doesn't make much sense to me.

Well...HTC lost me on this TP2. Not this time...

I honestly like the first Touch Pro more. I don't like the roundedness...I prefer sharp angles. It looks too fat lol.

I love the new Tilt design, it looks more tilted, but I personally prefer the diamond sharp on the back of my Fuze. And the USB slot look too UGLY, it's just coming out too much. I take back what I said about the Camera, I do use the camera on my device a lot lately, mostly because of the fast upload to Facebook.

Seeing the big screen on this youtube, really make me want it now

Gimme your advice about the D-PAD problem : what do you use instead of it, for example for gaming and so on ? I mean, if you want to control some game emulator, do you use on screen buttons ? As the current devices are not multitouch (I don't want to speak about some well known IwannabeaPHONE), i don't think these are suitable for proper gaming.
Maybe the simple answer is "I don't use my device for gaming...".
What do you think ?

"Some" emulator programs allow onscreen virtual Dpads... but without multitouch, you'll be unable to simultaneously press onscreen buttons.
All games are different though. Some are simply point and click games which don't require a dpad. Others work well without a Dpad.
Most games will flat out be impossible to use.
I came from the Samsung Epix with its Optical Dpad/Mouse... to the Fuze for the Dpad. I later found that the Dpad isn't really a Dpad... but a touchscreen with optical sensors (which is why the Dpad on the fuze sucks; but at least it is a functioning dpad).
I swore my next phone will have a physical dpad and a jog wheel.

I'm surprised how few WM devices have a jog wheel; my last one was a FSC Loox 720 and a jog wheel was one of its major positive points back then. It hardly seems like it would be an expensive or difficult control to add, but I guess it's not free and so there's something for HTC to gain by not including one.
I also prefer the diamond back of the Touch Pro, not that the Vario IV has it anyway though (not clear why they had to change that).

Which phone to get HTC HD2 or Toshiba TG01

I am looking to replace my MDA Compact IV with either the HTC HD2 or the Toshiba TG01 or iPhone 3GS.
I have not really seen either of these phones properly, but have read reviews online.
Does anyone have any views on which is the better phone??
I have thown the iPhone in as a comparison, but would rather stick with a WM based phone.

right off the back i say the hd2 its packing a 1gz snapdragon processor. switching from the iphone and going to the hd2 u well be please. It basically the touch pro 2 with out a keyboard but the tp2 is packing a 512mb processor.
But i say get the HD2 ur getting a fast phone, better cam, look better and you can tweak your phone etc. idk it the shi lol

DONT GET THE TOSHIBA TG01!!!
I sold mine after only a few weeks, here are the problems i found after upgrading to windows mobile 6.5
1) the funky home screen stopped moving in 3D and only kinds slid across the screen
2) the g-sensor is crap somtimes u turn the phone and nothing happens, then you turn it back and it will quickly flick from landsacape to portrait
3) programs stored on the SD card, the icons would disapear after a soft reset, only leaving the generic blue and white .exe icon in there place
4)the phone is 2 thin and thus the sylus cannot be house in the housing like a htc device making it awfull to use, always saying to ur mates "DID U SEE WHERE I PUT MY STYLUS" lol
5) in landscape mode the wm start menu looks awfull and only takes up the middle section of the screen
6)there are black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, you dont notice when using a pitch black theme like "htc black//0 but use a colourful one and it looks like the top bar has dropped down a bit and it very annoying lol

the tgo1 has the 1gig snapdragon processor too, it only has 288mb of ram compaired to the hd 2's 512mb

Don't know if it is of any importance for you but TG01 has USB host and it was confirmed that mouse, keyboards and gamepads work very well with it. Don't know about flash drives though.

I can't have an opinion on the TG01, as I have not tried it. I own an iphone 3GS and recently replaced a touch HD with touch HD2.
The HD2 is, by far, superior to any phone I ever used. I have been with ETEN, and HTC for over 4 years, and iphone since the first generation. The [email protected] is the one. On any given category- it's a winner.
Screen is amazing. Capacitive (multi finger) like the iphone, but resolution is much better and 4.3" is a killer screen. GPS apps are killing the iphone in any comparison. Don't get fooled by 85,000 apps on the apple store. 84,850 of them will have no use for you, and the ones that are- you will find WM app that does the same.
Compatibility with Exchange server and outlook (actually all office apps) - HD2 wins big time again.
Keyboard- HD2 again. though the iphone is about the same, the HD2 has a wide screen. It helps a lot.
Reception - it's a phone after all - HD2 wins again (on AT&T network in the US). sound is crystal clear.
CPU speed- HD2 wins again. The snapdragon is a monster.
Battery life - OK, you can't win them all. The iphone has a better battery life, BUT I have two batteries and the HD2 wins again (with a cheat). Can't have the iphone battery out that easy.
BT - the HD2 wins again with great stereo that the 3GS can dream of having.
Music - no need for the stupid itune app. For me, it was annoying. I have 2 laptops and could never have itunes work right for me because you need to work around syncing your device. Not to mention I had hard time moving purchased songs from the ipod to the phone. You need to beg apple folks to support you after you have already paid. with the HD2 you simply put the MP3 on the SD card and you are done.
SD card- HD2 wins big time with 32G support, and replaceable cards. iphone is 16G at best and that's about it.
Camera- Until the HD2 I was thinking iphone has a great camera. Boy how wrong i could be. The HD2 with a dual LED flash wins again. Just make sure to have the camera bug fixed with a cab install and it is winning again.
Lastly- HTC is the Mercedes-Benz of phones. Apple came up with a great device but HTC eventually came out with a better one. Toshiba? Great TV sets, no doubts, but phones? They are far behind, IMO...

Keep in mind the HD2 came out a fair while after the TG01... I don't know if it's really fair to say Toshiba is behind, if anything HTC was behind for a little while in terms of hardware...
But of course right now I would say HD2 is the way to go...

HTC Hero or BB Storm 2 ?? I'm stuck

I want a reliable phone that will last me at least 2 years.

HTC reliablility. I currently own a HTC Touch Diamond and it hasnt been too reliable. But I might fault that to windows mobile and mainly the resistive screen. The screen seems to have problems. But then again, the Hero and S2 both have capacitive screens so thats huge in terms of reliability for me (not sure about surepress though).
ps. I dont like hardware keyboards, they arent comfortable for me to type on.
I'm not a heavy e-mailer.
I want a fun and reliable phone.

HTC hasnt really proven to me that they are the best, lol

Go for Hero!!
Just thinking to use blackberry OS make me sick...
HTC as any other company has it's bad times but they deliver great quality products.
Also XDA great support to HTC devices is a plus to consider

Blackberry non-touch phones are reliable. Don't know about the Storm series.
HTC Hero, unlike HTC Diamond has better virtual keybaord, better touch screen, better speed performance.
Now comparing HTC to BBS2: The memory card should not be a PRO because you are better comparing the performance of the phone, and not the external goodies that your seller provides. (TIE)
Android does have more programs (I think). Black Berry messenger, depends who where you are and depends on your friends. (Honestly different friends equates to different messengers). My friends in Michigan all used Windows Messenger on the PC. My friends in California use yahoo messenger on the PC. The messenger app, is your choice. Besides you might even find a blackberry messenger program that could work on the HTC Hero. (HTC Wins)

Screen Size: Don't be a fool, both screens are approximately the same size. Look at the specs, there is only a .5 inch difference. Not a deal breaker. Can't believe that you said it had a "BIG" screen when you compare it to a phone with a screen almost just as big. (TIE)
Reliability: Storm 2 online support, good but not super technical. HTC Hero online support, very awesome and full of techie people. Storm 2 OS out of the box is reliable I guess. And so is the HTC Hero. But remember that a phone that works with 3rd party software (HTC Hero) becomes very buggy. (HTC Hero Wins).

As you can see, the Blackberry failed to win in any of the categories you mentioned. It only managed to sort of tie with the HTC Hero. But this is my opinion.
Also, both phones suck, and HTC Hero generated too much hype.
I am looking forward to these phones: Blackberry Bold 9700, HTC Nexus, HTC HD2.

I'm also comparing the deal I get for the money paid to my cell phone provider.
Android does have more programs (I think). Black Berry messenger, depends who where you are and depends on your friends. (Honestly different friends equates to different messengers). I think there are more BB apps, since android is still a "toddler" . And do you know what BBM is? It has nothing to do with Windows live or yahoo. With BBM, its almost a text message but its sent through RIM's network directly to another BB device with no delay, and I can also see if the person has read the message or not. It was a variant to text messaging, HTC does not and will not have anything like that. There is also no limit to the number of characters you can type. You dont need to have BBM "running" as it is not an app, it is part of a blackberry device.

You cant see anything with a 5mp camera at night time if it has no flash. It can be 100mp. 3.2 still provides good quality and it can be used at any time of day/night with no problems.

Since the screen IS bigger and they are both capacitive and both display the same number of colours, BB wins. If we're comparing the SIZE of a screen, and one is bigger, how can it be a tie?

lol my last comment about the HD2 was done out of spite to the people who hate huge phones.

If I were you, I would definitely go with the Hero, or maybe even wait for the Hero's successor, the Legend (supposedly released March 2010, look at the sticky called "HTC Portfolio 2010" at the top of this subforum for more info). Android is very fast, fun, and customizable OS. In addition, there's a huge community supporting the device here at XDA-Developers, if you're interested in hacking it to the fullest. I haven't heard horrible things about the Storm/Storm II, but I've never heard good things about them either. If it were me in this situation, I would go for the Hero without a doubt.

I looked up the specs of the Legend. The current specs of it wont even work with my provider. I'm soo stuck. The flash on the BB is big for me so I can take pictures whenever. But the interface and function of Android seems more refined. I havent had a good experience with my HTC and I dont know if they have upped their quality. You cant really tell from the hero because it hasnt been out too long but BB is known for the reliable builds of their phones.
Its really tough. Its a big investment for me and I need to know I'll have whichever phone for a while.

I honestly don't own either phone, and have never ventured into Android land. However, I have tried both a Storm and a Storm II... and as for the Storm I felt it to be well... antiquated - when it came out mind you. The Storm II addressed many of the issues with the Storm, but it is a Blackberry that is touch screen. BB has not had a whole lot of experience with touch screens and it shows in their interface, it just felt... well poorly planned. I cannot comment on the Hero, but am eager to try one hah

Hero definitely, the only thing that can even come close to an Android phone is the iPhone, and it falls short for me every time.

Come close in what sense though?
The Storm2 will be $100 more expensive for me. But I do get that 16gb sd card, camera flash, and BB reliabilty.
Hero, $100 cheaper, can surf the web away from wifi (will have a small data plan, would only have a social plan on the BB but I would use wifi when needed), ANDROID . .. but not sure on how much it would last me.

Before I bought my HD2, the Blackberry Storm has been my mobile phone for 13 month.
I don't know Android, besides some playing around, but my experience with the blackberry:
The first version (9500/9530) had many problems, mostly because of software flaws. After one year of developement it is now very usable. The built quality seems to be even better on the new device (Storm 2).
If you want to have a phone that simply works, take the Blackberry. There are no software problems, it always does what you expect. With BIS/BES Service for instant mails, the battery will last 3 days. But there is only a small amount of software available for Blackberrys. If you want a phone to play around with, try one with android.

HTC Hero Build Quality is better than Diamond I think. But It's not based on my usage experience, thought I've used the Diamond before. I think, in the U.S. atleast, that the HTC Hero is for higher-end consumers, and the Diamond was a very introductory device that meant to showcase Touch FLO3D. It was the first phone that had that interface, I think.
Diamond is not on-par to HTC Hero. But I tell you this, the HTC Xperia X1 was a fiasco and the build quality is really terrible. I bought this phone for 900 U.S. dollars, and ended up selling it heavily used and scratched for 250.
Considering that at that time, a high end device produced a year or two later had a build quality as crappy as a Diamond and from the same manufacturer, you might think that the Hero is very flimsy.
But you must also consider that the Xperia X1 was also a Sony Ericsson phone. It was built by HTC, but most likely designed or supervised by Sony Ericsson. Now the Xperia X1 is literally an experiment by Sony Ericsson as well as the Diamond an experiment by HTC. To tell you the truth, Sony Ericsson, prior to the production of the Xperia X1, was very inexperienced in the smartphone industry. Sony Ericsson are used to designing and selling walkmans (low-end software phones) and very flashy but very useless phones. But the point is that Xperia X1 was their first phone on THIS CATEGORY (THE SMARTPHONE), and that since it was their first phone, they are likely to mess up on the first try.
Considering that the Diamond was an experimental and introductory Touch FLO3D Phone, it should have been crappy. Now you are right to think that the Diamond was not HTC's first smartphone. But put into context the other aspects. 1) The diamond-like design that HTC had never done before and 2) the Touch FLO3D might originally be reflected by the external, physical design.
HTC Hero has been out for awhile now. But personally I hate HTC Hero and Storm 2. If I were to get an HTC budget phone, it would be the Nexus (based on everyone saying it has a good price for it's value), or the BlackBerry Bold 9700 (because I'm a keyboard lover).
But as for the reliable build of BlackBerries, my sister's BlackBerry Curve is scratched everywhere and lost all of its silver plastic chrome finish. But as for software, I don't think you should worry about issues on these phones.
But as for real software (especially the ones you intend on paying 50 bucks for), get the HTC Hero.

If your friends are all using BBM then really, you need a Blackberry. BBM is one of the main reasons behind the constant increase in device sales for RIM.
The Storm 1 was poor when it came out but after a year of fixes it was okay. The Storm 2 was good from the day it launched. However you really need to try that keyboard again and again to decide if you are happy with the click feature.
Personally I don't think much of the Hero: Small screen, slowish CPU, decent RAM, stupid chin that makes it bigger than it should be. I'm not sure how the Hero compares to the Storm 2 in terms of battery life but the Storm 2 has the bigger battery and Blackberries generally have decent battery life.
I don't know which country you're in or which network you're on but you have to remember that you'll need to have a Blackberry service package as part of your contract. With some networks this will be instead of the normal Data Package and it will also include data and with others you will need it in addition to the normal Data Package if you want to browse the web, etc.
I'm considering the Storm 2 as an option if the HD2 doesn't pan out.

I just got back from the store and tested both phones out.
The Hero does seem like it is built very well (keep in mind, when holding in hand, so does my Diamond) but I found it hard to type on the small screen.
You might say that my Diamond has a smaller screen, which it does, but due to my resistive screen, I use my finernails basically and amd very quick and accurate ... you cant use your fingernails on a capacitive screen.
When I flipped to landscape, the typing was a bit better.
Storm2 .. the typing was muchhhh easier.
but the Anroid interface was very snappy, very nice.

Oh yeah, about the typing. I'm not a fan of touch screen typing and the Storm 2 is better for typing. I don't think it's that the screen is small but that there is no tactile feedback (aside from phone vibrate). In fact buttons on screens are usually bigger then physical buttons.

Depends entirely on what you want. The HD2 is a nice, high-spec piece of kit, but it's a bit on the large side. The Touch Pro 2 is more pocketable, and has the best keyboard I've seen in a phone.
These are personal observations, and it's why I traded my HD2 for a Touch Pro 2.

4. largest screen on a WinMo device
5. 16gb card included
6. hspa+ capable (not sure if tp2 is, but probably is also)

To the person that said the tp2 is more pocketable, they are crazy. Yes the hd2 is bigger, but the tp2 is much fatter.

I have the TP2 and trust me it is becoming outdated fast. Get the HD2 or better yet wait another month or 2 because WP7 should be dropping by the end of this year.

If you must choose between one of these two phones, get the HD2. I have a TP2 because I want a hardware keyboard, but man is this thing slow by today's standards.
If you can wait though, there are a TON of better phones about to be released. It's worth waiting if you can.

​​Yeah, I completely agree with you about the Touch Pro 2 becoming outdated, I think if they would have just waited and relaesed it with better specs more people would buy it and it would have been a completely better product to sell and buy. I'm leaning more towards the HD2...especially since I can just hook up a mini bluetooth keyboard up to it and type off of that like a super slacker

Beside the hardware keyboard, there is another function that keeps me to stay with Rhodium TP2, that is its dominant accoustic/sound performance. It is equipped with dual speaker and dual microphone. In addition, you can turn it into a conference phone by simply turn it upsidedown and put on the table during a phone call. Up to now I did not find any other hand phones with such good speaker phone performance.
I do also have a Leo, but the sound performance is far behind.

I did like the sound on the TP2 (I've played with both the HD2 and the TP2) but the sound really isn't that important as long as it's still audible like the HD2 and I'm not really a business man so the laying down of the TP2 to have it in speaker is awesome...but not really needed since I mostly use bluetooth. By the by, does anyone know if you can actually have Android as the main Rom for your HD2? (Meaning, the phone turns off, turns back on and android is loaded without having WM 6.5 as the middle man)

Yeah, it definitely is. Honestly though the only other HTC phone that stands out to me is the HD2...well that and the G2

Bro. Coming from a guy that has both. I actually like the HD2 better. The touch pro 2 is a great phone but the HD2 is far more advanced and the modding ability (if your into that type of thing) is great for both WM and Android. I cant go back. The touch pro 2 still is a good phone. Just may be outdated at this point.

i have the hd2 and im very happy.so my next phone is hd3.haven't see it yet;see it and wait.all the money.

TP2 have a lovely sound play xD.......its amazing and the best keyboard ever done....But other way, HD2 have a better screen, much more fast (the TP2 its very noise about speed :S)
But...hd2 can be dificult with touch screen...dont support any stylus :S

Go for the HD2 unless you really want the keyboard IMHO.

I have used TP2 since its release to Tmobile then switched to HD2 recently. After using HD2 for a couple of months, I can't stand the resistive touch screen that TP2 uses anymore. The capacitive touch is much much more sensitive.
Now I'm using TP2 as a backup phone in case HD2 goes out but if I had the choice initially, I would be all in for HD2.
BTW, unless you have to have WM6.5, the new MyTouch 4G and Samsung Vibrant are pretty good as well.
