Display dbm instead of bars for signal strength - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

iPhone has a nifty app that displays actual dbm instead of bars for signal strength. Do we have anything like this?

Well I'm not sure if you know this, but you can view your db in the Phone Info settings menu. I'm guessing you want a hack to change your signals to a number at the top of the phone though?

[APP] WifiNotify

Hello!
I have programmed an app for my own usage that I want to share.
It's simply a sticky notification showing wifi state (including SSID and other information if connected) and also if clicked, it changes wifi state.
Hope you find it useful!
You can install it from the Amazon Appstore or downloading the attached apk.
Changelog:
Version 2: Now shows an icon in status bar when wifi is on (connected or not)
Some more info.
Version 3: Auto update (on/off and time interval configurable), icon when wifi on configurable, text color and info in notification configurable, bugfixes.
I like it, it does exactly what it says it does. The only thing I could have wished that it did was have some type of way to enter the wifi settings menu when clicked instead of disabling wifi. I haven't found a good shortcut for this yet, as I use two different APs in my house (depending on which area of the house) and Android always connects to the last used one rather then the strongest connection, so I always have to go through and change it manually.
Otherwise, anyone looking for a quick way to check your AP and enable/disable wifi without an extra widget, this is definitely a cool, simple and lightweight app to do so.
It's good to know you find it useful.
About accessing wifi settings quickly, you can create a direct shortcut if you use ADW launcher or LaucherPro (I don't know if other launchers have this feature); you have to create a shortcut and then select Activities. In the list that will show up, you can select the settings app and inside it, wifi settings.
Icon in Systray would be nice, so u can see that WiFi is active (but not connectecd to a network)

Yes I did, however a few things..
I feel the notification bar should also display Connection Speed, Signal Strength in DB with the option to go to connection settings..
Thanks..

i definitely agree. there aren't really any good widgets that show this information, and it is quite useful, in addition to the AP name. if this could be added, it would be near perfect.
Thanks for the feedback.
I agree, that info may be useful.
I'll try to show it in the notification.
how can I uninstall it from my HTC Desire HD. I use exented controls and have now conflicts when I tab airplane mode with exented controls and then return to normal mode , I have no more network connection
You can uninstall it like any other application. It should appear in the list of installed programs.
Anyway I don't understand your problem. Do you receive any errors? This application has nothing to do with your network connection... it only shows wifi state and changes its state but doesn't touch anything else.

I think this would be a great improve to your app.
Whats the status?
Thanks great app btw
Sorry for the lack of news.
I have modified it a little bit.
Now it shows an icon when wifi is on (connected or not) and shows more info.
To show info like network speed I need to make it update every X seconds.
I don't like this very much because that way it lost the simplicity.
Anyway I'm trying to make it configurable so you can set it the way you like (Just starting with Android programming )
This is the actual version (no config nor auto update): http://db.tt/dX8m7ao
Like the new configuration options and the infos (IP and bitrate), too bad the notification icon stays always in the status bar when co
nected to an AP; I think the previous behaviour was better, but it's my opinion.
Hope to see other improvement.

I get force close, when I try to start the app, by enabling wifi.
I used to use it on my desire with froyo, and it worked well (used the first release).
Now I installed gingerbread from leedroid, and installed the new version and I get force close. Reinstalled and still force close.
Any suggestions?
btw: really nice app!
I haven't tested it in gingerbread.
I'll try to test it and fix the problem.
Thanks!

[REQUEST][MOD] Hide 4G notification on 3.70

So, i upgraded to Fresh 3.5 which is based off of the OTA 3.70. and now when i keep 4G on and there is no 4G signal around that notification icon sits on the top left corner of the task bar. it's a 4G icon with an exclamation point on it and when you pull the notification bar down it says "4G antenna is ON, tap to scan for 4G service" can someone please find a way to hide this icon. I like to keep 4G turned on all the time and don't want to keep seeing this every time the 4G connection drops. TIA.
I second this!!
We can't be the only two to find this annoying.

Sprint could get all information from user.. note phone is rooted and flag account
No they can't, I'll called them today, no flagging or anything. And remember rooting is not illegal, and they cannot flag your account for doing it. Their saying this is a feature to save battery life. I disagree. My thought is they couldn't figure out how to get the 3G to 4G handoff to happen properly so this is their solution. BTW, I've had nothing but problems with 4G stalling since I've owned the phone so this is still an issue.
For those of you wanting to lose the constant notification. It's in the framework-res.apk You can use Gimp to make it transparent and then push the framework back to your phone. Or you can pull your framework and make your own flashable zip. Then you can keep modifying anytime you want to change something with 7-zip.
It's actually not in framework-res, and making the image transparent keeps the spacing allocated and continues to display the notification text in the "notifications" section of the drop down window.
So, having said that, consider the attached (flash via recovery) EXTREMELY experimental. It "should" remove all the corresponding 4G notifications. What I don't know, is if in doing so, it breaks the ability to automatically reconnect when leaving and re-entering a 4G area. This isn't as easy to remove as icons to the right of the status bar, or even some on the left. This uses android's built-in notifications framework, which requires ongoing services, etc, to report activity on the top left side, and in trying to break its display, it is certainly possible more than just its display has been "broken".
Again, give it a shot and see if it works without any unintended side affects. But, be warned, as mentioned, it may. Just not sure, as I haven't been able to test it enough to verify it works as intended.
Nandroid before flashing so you can restore more easily if it doesn't work as intended.
It flashed just fine, I haven't left my 4G area yet so well see if it effects reconnection. I let everyone know. Now I just need to change the scanning frequency interval back to what it was before because it seems that the interval is longer now, thus they put a button on the notification bar to instantly activate it. Thank you Sir for your help, and a Happy Christmas and Merry New Year to everyone.
After looking at the wimax setting the values that changed are-
Previous- wimax entry delay(s)600
Current- wimax entry delay(s) 300
and
Handoff Threshold
Previous - 0
Current - 6
I changed my handoff back to 0 and well see what happens, and I'll try 3 and report back.
I'm also going to lower entry delay and see what it does to battery life.
The (Previous) settings are taken from a post from July, so who know what there were a few weeks ago.
I can confirm that the .zip file works perfectly. Gets rid of the notification and reconnection works fine. Still playing with the scan settings in regards to battery life.
Finally, back on the forum. Thanks for making this mod. Downloading now and will give it a try.

Cool, thank for the additional confirmation.
Sorry to be so noobish. I just got my first android phone and just (stupidly) applied this update today and I hate how it doesn't reconnect the 4g automatically and makes me rescan. I really wish I could make the 4g how it was before.
My phone is not rooted or anything its just an HTC evo with a white backing right out of the box and updated. What should I do?
I'd be more than happy to donate to the developer of this method just need a little help here please.

You beat me to the same question. While it is trivial to undo, how did you apply in the first place?
I guess it is feasible to extract the apk from the zip, and manually click to install from your sd card, but somehow I doubt this is what was done...
Either way, for future edification, since you would have to know what apk it is, if you installed it this way, why not just download a stock ROM and pull out the same apk and re-apply?
This is what I have done and attached.

X10 way to get 5 or 6 Signal bars?

Since updating to Gingerbread my bars sometimes show no bars though there is no X for Signal so i an still make calls. I see it is possible on other androids but is there a Mod for the X10? I cant seem to find one that will work on my X10. Just curious.
I tried UOT Kitchen but no such luck even creating a better battery icon with percentage. I also tried smali but can not seem to be able to open the jar like other files to experiment there.
my apologies if this is somewhere else I didn't seem to find anything related to X10 for this other than dBm replacing signal bar.

LTE-only option?

I keep thinking I read a post by someone saying this was possible at some point but if they did, I can't seem to find it by searching. Is there a way to try and force the phone to connect to LTE connections only? I can't find anything obvious in the settings to do this if so...CDMA only certainly. Seems like though if I'm remembering right it might have been in one of the dialer menu settings?

Go into Phone, dial *#*#4636#*#*, then go into phone information, slide to the bottom, and there will be an option for "LTE Only"
Don't have that option here....when I go into that menu I see:
Phone information
Battery information
Usage statistics
Wi-Fi information
Motorola Services
That's it.

Did you miss the body of my post?
Ok I see it now, I went into all the submenus earlier but didn't see it originally. Its not all the way at the bottom of Phone Info, it's about 2/3rds of the way down cramped between a couple of buttons that it sits above, and underneath the title header 'Set preferred network type', just for anyone else that may be looking for this.

I can confirm that you can toggle it back and forth, but I can't confirm it works in the purest sense because thus far there's no LTE in my area unfortunately.
When I originally posted inquiring about this was the night before I headed back home from PA and had hoped I'd be able to use the ability to to do some more fully-fleshed out Sensorly mapping rather than constantly having to toggle airplane mode on and off, but I didn't get the answer until I was back home.
Now that i am home i can confirm this does work. Thanks again zodiac!

Data Flow Arrows in Status Bar

Being new to Nexus phones I'm not sure if this is normal or not.
But next the my WiFi symbol, or the E/H/3G letter in the status bar, I'm used to seeing little arrows showing the data flow on my phone. These do appear when you look at the toggles tab when you open the status bar, but they don't appear as tiny arrows when the status bar is closed at the top.
In bad data areas I find these really handy to see if I'm receiving data or not within other apps so it's actually quite annoying these aren't here.
Just wondered if this was new to 4.4 or has been like this for a while?

I guess you can get some widget that can do this, or wait until Xposed Framework become available for KitKat, the GravityBox module can display download speed on the status bar.
Cool - thanks.
I may have to start messing with the SystemUI in the mean time.
Wow! This is definitely NOT COOL Google!
Removing the indication of network data flowing via wifi or mobile network is really sneaky / user unfriendly!

What is the basis for your knowledge of what "most people" know/don't know?
Actually, it is very user UNfriendly unless you are the NSA, CIA, a malware writer, or someone with vested interest in having people use data and rack up charges without their knowledge.
Can't tell you how many times I've noticed data flowing when it shouldn't be.
And, if people don't know what the arrows are doing, so what???
This is definitely one of my complaints about KitKat. Just say no to dumbing down.

No big deal, if you want to monitor data usage then it doesn't help to watch some arrows, you still don't what app or how much data. There is still good monitoring info in settings how much data each app uses, and you get the arrows if you pull down the status bar. And of course, it will soon be simple mods that add these arrows back.
Please remember that user interfaces that adds everything that people wants are cluttered and really bad for everyone. To get a good user interface you really must dare to remove things.
And this sentence doesn't make sense
"Can't tell you how many times I've noticed data flowing when it shouldn't be."
What do you mean? Who could you know it shouldn't be any data flow? Especially when you don't know what app.

Couldn´t agree more.
Google, why on earth ...
- did you remove the data indicator arrows ?
- did you decide to hard link notification and ring tone volume?
- remove the opportunity to use navigation seperately from MAPS so I can just drive along assisted by google navigation in "1st person view"?
- did you STILL NOT manage to deliver a DECENT standard email app (no IMAp push, no hyperlinking of http adresses in mails ...)
- did you decide to play MP3 ringtones only ONCE, so I have to convert them to OGG and manually edit that stupid "repeat" flag in any of my custom ringtones?
- do I STILL not have the choice if I want my ring tone to have increasing volume or fixed volume?
At least give me a frickin´ CHOICE to get back all the stuff you´ve taken away from us.
Pissed,
Kusie
Data flow arrows show up on the quick settings menu (at least for mobile data, I haven't tried wifi). Hope this helps!
This is a huge let down........... In the past whenever I am wondering if I have access to the internet I would look at those data flow arrows when launching an app.... if they don't show up, I just put my phone away, and I know I'm not in a good data reception area.... now that they're not there... I suppose i could stick around and wait to see and find out if there is data or not... you'll find out anyways when you wait and wait and wait........ if that youtube clip never loads, you'll know you have poor data reception...... but those data flow arrows would let me know straight away!!! Not sure why they were taken away when they were so beneficial.
