So, i upgraded to Fresh 3.5 which is based off of the OTA 3.70. and now when i keep 4G on and there is no 4G signal around that notification icon sits on the top left corner of the task bar. it's a 4G icon with an exclamation point on it and when you pull the notification bar down it says "4G antenna is ON, tap to scan for 4G service" can someone please find a way to hide this icon. I like to keep 4G turned on all the time and don't want to keep seeing this every time the 4G connection drops. TIA.
I second this!!
We can't be the only two to find this annoying.

Sprint could get all information from user.. note phone is rooted and flag account
No they can't, I'll called them today, no flagging or anything. And remember rooting is not illegal, and they cannot flag your account for doing it. Their saying this is a feature to save battery life. I disagree. My thought is they couldn't figure out how to get the 3G to 4G handoff to happen properly so this is their solution. BTW, I've had nothing but problems with 4G stalling since I've owned the phone so this is still an issue.
For those of you wanting to lose the constant notification. It's in the framework-res.apk You can use Gimp to make it transparent and then push the framework back to your phone. Or you can pull your framework and make your own flashable zip. Then you can keep modifying anytime you want to change something with 7-zip.
It's actually not in framework-res, and making the image transparent keeps the spacing allocated and continues to display the notification text in the "notifications" section of the drop down window.
So, having said that, consider the attached (flash via recovery) EXTREMELY experimental. It "should" remove all the corresponding 4G notifications. What I don't know, is if in doing so, it breaks the ability to automatically reconnect when leaving and re-entering a 4G area. This isn't as easy to remove as icons to the right of the status bar, or even some on the left. This uses android's built-in notifications framework, which requires ongoing services, etc, to report activity on the top left side, and in trying to break its display, it is certainly possible more than just its display has been "broken".
Again, give it a shot and see if it works without any unintended side affects. But, be warned, as mentioned, it may. Just not sure, as I haven't been able to test it enough to verify it works as intended.
Nandroid before flashing so you can restore more easily if it doesn't work as intended.
It flashed just fine, I haven't left my 4G area yet so well see if it effects reconnection. I let everyone know. Now I just need to change the scanning frequency interval back to what it was before because it seems that the interval is longer now, thus they put a button on the notification bar to instantly activate it. Thank you Sir for your help, and a Happy Christmas and Merry New Year to everyone.
After looking at the wimax setting the values that changed are-
Previous- wimax entry delay(s)600
Current- wimax entry delay(s) 300
and
Handoff Threshold
Previous - 0
Current - 6
I changed my handoff back to 0 and well see what happens, and I'll try 3 and report back.
I'm also going to lower entry delay and see what it does to battery life.
The (Previous) settings are taken from a post from July, so who know what there were a few weeks ago.
I can confirm that the .zip file works perfectly. Gets rid of the notification and reconnection works fine. Still playing with the scan settings in regards to battery life.
Finally, back on the forum. Thanks for making this mod. Downloading now and will give it a try.

Cool, thank for the additional confirmation.
Sorry to be so noobish. I just got my first android phone and just (stupidly) applied this update today and I hate how it doesn't reconnect the 4g automatically and makes me rescan. I really wish I could make the 4g how it was before.
My phone is not rooted or anything its just an HTC evo with a white backing right out of the box and updated. What should I do?
I'd be more than happy to donate to the developer of this method just need a little help here please.

You beat me to the same question. While it is trivial to undo, how did you apply in the first place?
I guess it is feasible to extract the apk from the zip, and manually click to install from your sd card, but somehow I doubt this is what was done...
Either way, for future edification, since you would have to know what apk it is, if you installed it this way, why not just download a stock ROM and pull out the same apk and re-apply?
This is what I have done and attached.

I haven't seen any threads like this so decided it would probably be a good idea to get one going of all the minor gripes we have or bugs that we've encountered as I've already seen a few. I'm not sure if HTC do have a researcher scouring the net for threads like these to try and find out what the general masses think, but one can only hope...
+ LED notification is absolutely rubbish.
My phone is next to my Hero today as the numbers are being ported and I just received an email to my Gmail. With the phone lying vertically under my screen I could barely see the flash from the Sensation (to the extent that I'd already missed one mail) whereas the Hero was flashing away in all it's beauty to let me know.
+ Phone rebooted when taking a photo.
I've only taken a few pics on here, but after taking one of the dog last night with the flash on, the phone instantly turned off and completely rebooted. Maybe it's a one off, but it definitely wasn't good! Will have to keep an eye out for this happening again.
+ Trace seems a bit hit and miss.
I used Swype on my Hero so am assuming I just need to learn how to use the new one. I'll have to work on that one myself although it may be a case of training the phone not to pick out the most obscure word possible when all I want is to spell "hello".
I haven't really used it enough to spot any others, but I'm intrigued as to what other issues people seem to be finding.
...and on a side note I'm really, really missing the trackball that's on my Hero. Selecting text is so sensitive and I keep catching the wrong bit. I feel quite sad letting the little guy go. He's served me so well!! It does feel like a toy now when I go back to it. Lo-res and chunky!
Good call, I was thinking of such a thread myself.

Can't say I've had either of these. Have taken a lot of photos and about half a dozen 1080p videos, everything seems very stable.
Allow me to add a bug to the list:
+ No shutter button or menu options on camera.
If you have a lock pattern set up, dragging the camera icon into the ring on the lockscreen results in the camera app loading, but there is no user interface. You can see the camera's view, but there is no shutter button or options or anything else to interact with. However, the camera app is fine if accessed as normal from the home screen or app drawer.
Is trace supposed to learn from your usage to better predict words in the future?
I agree on the trackball, I used to have a HTC Magic and selecting text is a lot harder now!

Calendar is not sync with Google calendar. Sync setting is on, mail, contact, Picasa, calendar are selected. Only calendar is not working. Is this a bug or Google's problem?

This is quite annoying. I really like the idea of quick access to the camera, if it actually worked.
I don't have this issue with the camera. I did change some of the shortcuts though and may have re-added the camera one myself. Try that, see if it fixes it.
Edit: oh wait, I see what you mean. Only happens when you have a pattern lock...
Trace is useless. I used Shapewriter on my Nexus and it was amazing, but keyboards don't scale well to higher res. Plus it's been off the market for a year, so I'm not holding out much hope for a qHD version.
Vodafone ROM - Has no rosie launcher (like stock rom), I dont actually use the pattern lock, but i have seen the error with the camera launcher, this is a problem too, possibly we may see a fix for this and others with a minor update.
The LED is rubbish, actually borderline pointless. I've not seen it flash once today despite receiving about 5-6 emails. Maybe if the phone is actually facing you in a holder then it would show, but otherwise it may as well not exist.

Sound with video
Has anyone experienced a problem where sound from video cuts out after a short time?
I'm having the issue when playing through the speaker and headphones, on different files and when using different media players.
If I forward the video on slightly the sound returns, almost as if the sound output is going to sleep with inactivity.
Another bug, added few apps on homepage, those apps icon are changed to Android green icon after restarted the phone.
Maybe this problem is caused by moved apps to SD card. I don't know.

That would be the case. When you create a shortcut it creates a link to a resource on the phone. When you move that resource you get the default icon instead.

Just discovered a very annoying bug with this new OTA update. I've had it for about an hour, and everything else has been good except for this.
With the lockscreen, my first shortcut icon (Phone Dialer) suddenly disappeared. I have no clue how to get it back.
When I try to re-assign it as a shortcut, it doesn't appear on the shortcuts menu.
I'm 1,000% positive that I did not erase the dialer icon in the lockscreen edit menu.
Anyways, this is just a heads up for some of you TmoUSA people who just got the OTA update.
And if anybody has any suggestions on how to prevent/fix this, or get back my phone dialer shortcut, I'd really appreciate it.
I got the phone dialer and it did not disappear from lock screen after the update.
I think this may be an isolated incident. But wow none the less. I would suggest a wipe brother.
Wow, that sucks to know that it's just me
Not that I would wish this problem on any of you, just kinda bothers me because I factory-resetted just yesterday
It's not just you. I still have the phone on my first button of the lock screen, but if I go to edit the lockscreen buttons, the first one is now blank, and Phone is not an option in the list of available apps to assign.
As long as I don't change it, it's good...
The EVO 3D had this problem with 2.3.3 at launch. HTC sent out a minor update to fix. Expect a minor update in the near future.
I wonder if I should just install a phone dialer app from the market and see if that can be a workaround.
What do you guys think?

If you save any changes from that screen you'll lose the icon.
Really, yikes. I think I like the 4 I have there now so I'll leave it alone for the time being.

I just got the update and yes, while I still have the Phone icon on my lockscreen, if I go to the Settings page for the screen the position is blank and "Phone" isn't an option in the list of programs to launch.
It looks like birgertime's work-around may be what you need, until HTC (hopefully) releases a fix for this.
In the mean time, I'm not going to change my lockscreen icons (not that I frequently do anyway).

I just got the update and I don't have any issues with my lock screen. maybe try to change in your lock screen htc gives us like 6 to choose from 'm using the 1 that shows status updates from facebook and such.
also my wifi is working a lot better I still lose signal when I grip it in landscape mode but it doesn't lose signal completely and I can still use wi-fi even in landscape mode holding it with both hands
The workaround works great! Thanks for the help, everybody.
I was just reading this thread when I noticed that I had the same bug after changing the lockscreen icons. Will flashing a ROM over the update help?
***UPDATE***
I upgraded to ParanoidAndroid and had to use a different apk. I don't know who made this one (i downloaded like 10 from xda and tried about 4 before it started working), but here's the winner:
techneesh.com/paranoidandroidnfcscreenoff.apk
*****************
Hey guys,
I searched for hours but could only find reports of people *NOT* getting this to work on the Verizon GS3 (hence the name of the thread).
I tried hacking my stock Nfc.apk using dex2jar & modding the smali files (after looking up the appropriate values to change using decompiled dex2jar classes.dex's nfcservice.java), but after much frustration decided to just go ahead and try the existing versions out there.
By the way, if anyone is looking for how to do this (decompiling/modding/recompiling an apk) with 4.0.4 (and getting the 'bad magic number with smali/baksmali), refer to the comment on May 8th in this thread.
I'm pleased to report that mayhemer's AT&T version (for the SGS-I747) works for us Verizon folks!
You can grab it on his thread here.
I've also uploaded it to my server. Here's a direct link:
techneesh.com/Nfc.apk
I posted this in the Development section because I would really like to encourage devs to work on modding Nfc functionality further. Also, this is a more advanced mod for a system app.
Google Wallet did not throw errors with this .apk (as it did with others), although I have not tested it yet.
NFC reads trigger the nfc tag's function and the alarm/beep, but do not turn on or unlock the screen (while it is off).
Also, I just got a whole bunch of NFC tags in and plan to make some cool products for them... if you have any ideas let me know on my 3D-printing-on-demand-for-xda-samsung-gs3-folks thread.
Note- I am on Bean's Custom Stock R3.1 07/28 (I know, I need to upgrade)
4.0.4, SCH-I535, Baseband I535VRLF2, Kernel 3.0.38imoseyon+, Hardware I535.10
Instructions for apk:
1. Get apk onto your phone
2. Stop NFC (or else your phone will start lagging // freezing after the next step)
3. Copy the apk to /system/app/ with a root explorer and overwrite the existing Nfc.apk (you should make a backup first)
4. Change permissions to match other system apks (rw-r--r--)
5. Reboot & re-enable nfc. Profit. Share your uses.
For zip you should be able to just flash in cwm.

oh man, don't get me started!
think about it - you get to your desk and want to tether / turn on music / silence phone. just tap it on the nfc sticker on your desk. done.
you get into your car and want to enable gps / turn on music / navigate somewhere. tap your phone to the nfc sticker. done.
i have a lockscreen for security and even though it only takes a second to open it still adds up over the course of the day. the ability to quickly do (any) task on your phone without unlocking it or even pressing a button is huge.
for example, I canceled home internet last year when I got LTE but this means I have to turn on tethering every time i sit down at my PC. using a tasker nfc-activated command I can just touch my phone to my desk and it's on. time saving and just fun.
or maybe you are in a meeting and miss a call and want to call them back - have a pre-programmed nfc sticker that will command your phone to set an alarm for (e.g.) 1 hour. tap your phone to it without fiddling /unlocking/interrupting your meeting further.
what really made me think of this is while I was looking for something behind a wardrobe and wanted to turn on my LED flashlight on my phone. how cool would it be to have an nfc sticker (on your keychain? on a sliding mechanism on a custom techneesh.com case on your phone?) that could basically act as a 4th hard button to do a custom function (in this case, turn on the LED flashlight without 1. turning on screen 2. unlocking 3. going to home screen 4. finding LED flashlight app and opening)
and yes, this is for real
I'm trying to get this to work on CleanROM 2.5, with the G7 baseband. I followed the steps correctly, but it doesn't to anything different than the stock NFC
I can still read my tags when screen on and unlocked, but i get no response with the screen off or on and locked.

Yea, I understand the risks and all.
I agree that it is a major security vulnerability for someone that wishes to highly protect their information.
I just wanted to try it for a proof-of-concept kind of thing.
Honestly its pretty quick to flash these via Cwm. I went back to stock Nfc.apk for parties/bars this weekend (Too many people close to me for security comfort), then today I flashed the lock screen version for my school week.
It would be really cool if it were possible to toggle this.

True, but this involves active running processes like GPS which can drain your battery. From my experience, NFC has no noticeable extra drain, not even the screen off modified version. Not to mention how easy it is to use the NFC programming apps versus Tasker, IMO.
About three months ago my Pixel 2 (purchased new from Google) began having an issue where it becomes unresponsive or extraordinarily delayed on responding. It almost always happens when I'm waking the phone up from being locked. When it happens, the phone will eventually unlock but everything reacts several seconds after contact (power button, taps, swipes). A reboot or power down fixes the problem, but is always necessary.
I switched to Project Fi around that time and thought it had something to do with the switching between CDMA and GSM (Sprint/US Cellular vs T-Moble) towers, but I've switched to T-Mobile (a solely GSM provider) since and the problem persists.
I am running Android Pie (stock). My bootloader is unlocked and I do have Magisk installed. No TWRP. I don't have any obvious troublemakers installed (like Xposed, for example) and only a few apps that even use root (Cerberus, Adaway, and Nova Launcher).
I have heard about the Pixel 2 XL having a hardware issue that results in unresponsiveness and that ultimately requires sending in the device for a replacement. Is this the same thing?
Any advice would be much appreciated. If it would be helpful, I can produce logs, but I'll have to wait until it happens again to offer logs that might contain clear indications of what might be happening.

Do you have the navbar hidden by any chance

Well, I have Nova set up to hide the dock unless I swipe up (or down) on it. I can't seem to find a setting about hiding the navbar. Where should I be looking to check?

Did you install any apps to hide your navigation bar? Is it always visible? Immersive mode apps for example

We're talking about the back button and the new pill gesture button, right? If so, then no I haven't installed anything to hide those: they are always visible.
Well, after 24 hours, I had the issue resurface. Unfortunately, the logging app I was using (matlog) froze up with the phone and produced a blank text file. While rebooting restored normal function of the phone, I can't produce a log as a result.
It occurs to me that while I am not disabling the navbar, I do use a function of the Cerberus anti-theft app to disable the notification bar while locked. Could this be the source of my issue? If so, is there any way to confirm this?
In the meantime, I've disabled that function and will see if the lock-up occurs again.
I'm curious where you were going with the question about the navbar. Could you tell me more about what you were thinking it might have been?
I went ahead and disabled the 'block status bar' function of the Cerberus app and the problem has not resurfaced in over two days (it was occurring several times daily). Although I can't definitively prove it, I think the culprit was the app.
Thanks for the time and assistance!

Sorry I didn't get back to you I read this a while back and totally thought I responded. Yeah anything that hides the status bar or navbar from the system UI at all times is known to cause wake issues. On my essential phone it would require me to restart it to actually get the screen to come back on. It's called the deep sleep of death or something haha

Hello Crixley,
No worries at all - I'm always grateful when anyone responds around here because I know that we're all balancing regular life and our hobby time!
I'm relieved to hear that it is a known issue, though I'm going to miss the functionality! I wish Google would build some kind of equivalent security measure so that the network state can't be changed while the phone is locked. I'm guessing that this issue is exactly why they haven't gotten to it (yet?).
Thanks for your time & support, both here with my issue and across the forums.
Peace,
Computerslayer

I'm glad to hear it's fixed for you!
I try to help as much possible, I remember how good it was to have people help me when I needed it and sometimes I need a hand as well.
So today my Samsung-SM-G950U had a software update that now doesn't allow you to remove the "Mobile Data Turned Off" notification but instead lets you silence it up to 2 hours. I used to be able to simply restart the phone and it was gone until I used it again and then I would simply restart but this option has been removed. Is there any way to remove it permanently?

AT&T phone, data works, turning off intentionally. I don't have a huge data plan so I turn off the data unless needed. Used to be able to simply restart the phone and the notification that data was off would disappear, now it stays in the notification bar.

did the update jump you from oreo to pie? if it was on pie and was just a security patch, you should be able to roll back within the same bootloader revision to a previous version of pie. www.sammobile.com/firmwares
i see your post count is rather low, but im not sure that speaks to your experience level. i just didnt want to bore you to death about Odin if youre already familiar and know how to run it
