[Q] bad screen and camera quality

hi guys,
I'm an android no0b ... soon fix that problem though.
anyway here is my situation and question:
Does the phones with the 'Bad Screen Issue' take the same quality pics as the ones with the Good screen
I love to take pics... my old nokia 3.15mb cellphone take great shot, I simply love cellphone that take great pics... but
I might be getting a used a mytouch4g (rooted still on froyo) [decent enough price (well as decent as living in Jamaica goes) ]
and from the first day that I saw the the phone I commented "oh i thought it would be nicer... the screen looks so bland... washed out"
the owner didnt even realize that it look bland, and said that its just looks that way , it doesnt affect the camera/pic quality.
I played around with it for a few minutes... my first experience with an android device... I AM IN LOVE WITH ANDROID NOW. but I still could not get around how bland the screen showed..
he only had it for a week before and didnt have much experience with android either.. he got it from someone b4 ... and all he knew is that its rooted.
I really like this device, and checked around online and was shocked to find out about the 'BAD SCREEN ISSUE' , and first i say some comments where persons said that they first say it after the rooted their device and a some1 even said that the unrooted their phone and the issue went away..
but that to this forum and youtube and realized that is a real hardware issue literally a 'BAD SCREEN' most like TFT vs a SuperLcd issue. ( right ?)
I still purchase it from him, and i said the the price is pretty sweet...
i know only know two person who own the mytouch/glacier and I asked them to send me a sample of pics that they took with their phone... just to compare camera quality. In fat hey did n't even know about the BAD screen issue (fortunately for them their devices are ok) ...
I took some pics with the one that i would be getting and I must say I am disappointed ... the pic when send to my pc looks just as washed out and bland as on the phone screen. i seriously doubted that the screen would affect the camera quality.. i may be wrong though.
I am not considering not to buy it... just because of the bright/washed out screen... but it not likely that i'm getting another decent Android phone for any where near this price again.
So guys I'm asking
.1) Does the phones with the 'Bad Screen Issue' take the same quality pics as the ones with the Good screen
.2) (if the forum allows it) some of your guys with the 'bad screen" phones upload your pics so i and have a better judgement of the camera quality. Prolly the camers secsors are determined by th e screen output (?)
.3) If u think that think that unrooting/rerooting will help the camera issue ( yeah unlikey )
4) If updated the android build / ginger bread or cm7 or so would improve the camera quality.

sadly I can not answer that question, as:
1) I did not check (dont know how to as yet), I am assuming that it at its default setting
2) the phone is not currently in my possession ( prolly not for the next two days) .

The menu button (second hard button from the left) will bring up settings. Check Resolution. I've noticed that pictures in lower light aren't too great. Remember though, its a phone with a camera. The camera is, at most, second.

hope fully I can get my hands on it tomorrow...
I am hoping that the camera can be adjusted to take quality pics...
sad if my old nokia kicks the teeth out a glacier

The LCD panel and the camera picture quality are not related. The good/bad screens basically refer to the two vendors HTC sourced for the MT4G's LCD, with the good one being the Sony S-LCD and the bad one being manufactured by Sharp. The differences between the screens lie in their contrast, color rendering, and off-axis viewing angles. There are some theories that the differences are not actually caused by the screen, but rather by the digitizer, but unless the digitizer was replaced, the screen and digitizer seem to go hand in hand.
The camera on the MT4G simply isn't that good. Unlike the camera for the Amaze, I've never read of an editable image compression setting for the MT4G's camera, so I'm inclined to believe that one doesn't exist.

judging from the pics that my friend took with their good screen phones.. am leaning to agree with u... its no carl zwiess lens but , i expected better from a 5mp flagship device
hopefully i can adjust the camera setting to suit my needs (crosses fingers)
what a waste if it doesnt..

I had two mytouch.
One good.one bad.
I have to say the cm7 camera from tdj's 12/30/11 cm7 Kang took some great pictures.
I tested every camera option available(alot of basketball/baseball games),and for some reason that Kang was the best as far as cameras.
Should it have been different? I do.t know why! Cant explain it!
Those pictures were crisp and clear.
I sure I posted a pic in that thread to check it for sure.right around new years.
Found the picture.posted it above.
On both phones the camera was super bad.
Thats why thr darkside was the best side.

I was not impressed with the quality of the pictures from the MT4G before it died. The outdoor pictures in daylight still had significant compression artifacts, soft focus, and undersaturation. Not natural saturation. Undersaturation. Blacks weren't black. Indoor pictures with incandescent lighting were just dreadful. Honestly, the picture quality was comparable to my Motorola RAZR2 V9x with an extra three megapixels.

Lol.haha.its a phone.its a 5mp camera.

Colors from camera are horrible.

The colors are far too over saturated. The resulting photos are not at all accurate. I tried changing white balance, but they problem stayed. Is there some other setting? Is this problem software specific... in other words would a different ROM maybe fix it?

have heard that and may be a little true, i am not a photo buff, so i think they are great

I think the photos are fine. Are you looking at them on a pc?

Yes, could that be the problem? I thought everyone looks at digital photos on PCs. FWIW the color problem persists on various PCs and on the phone itself.

To be honest, I think your photo proves the OP's point. I'm not saying it doesn't look great - it does; however, the colours are way over-saturated, meaning that while it looks nice, it does not look like a real or accurate represenation of the subject.

That is a great picture.
But unless that plant in the foreground is plugged into an outlet, there's no way that color can be accurate. Does it not look outrageously bright green to you?

Exactly. It looks "nice"... but the colors are way too intense.
Has anyone using a non-stock ROM noticed a difference?

Here's an example. The couch in this picture is a rather subdued maroon color. It does not glow like this in real life.

Yup. I just took a pic to confirm and its very noticeable. This is a big issue.

I find that if you into into the image adjustments and lower the saturation by 1, the colors are more accurate and natural. The photos are from my school and i think that just lowering the saturation it looks more natural

Looks like that does it, nice tip mate.

I'm comparing the photos from this to the photos of previous smart phones, like the Nexus One, G2 and several Samsung phones I've owned. All of these took better pictures with more accurate colors. The One S does have some nice features, like HDR and Low Light mode, but if the colors are all wrong, then it doesn't matter.
But it seems this may be lost on you. You're clearly struggling to understand the term 'smart phone'. My suspicion is that you, having little experience with the first half of the term have chosen to ignore it, and this is what has lead you to believe that a smart phone is 'just a damn phone.'

Actually, it's quite the opposite. I am very much aware about the 'smart' bit in 'smartphone' but I just think that no matter how you put it the camera on a 'smartphone' can never be included in the 'smart' bit.
You see, I am actually very much into photography and I do care quite a bit about the photo quality and that is why a phone no matter how 'smart' it is will never cut it for me - the quality is simply not there from the very start. There is no way to get the same quality from the tiny sensor and lens in a 'smart' phone as you would get from an SLR, even one with a 1.6 crop factor, and a proper set of lens.
So basically if you want your photos to look good then don't take them with a phone! While if you just want to point and shoot when you're out with your friends then I don't think the colour accuracy is that much of a big deal - you can always retouch them in Photoshop if you care that much. At the end of the day in a point and shoot situation you probably want to capture the moment and not so much to take an artistic photo.
I may well be wrong since the camera function on my 'smart' phone is one of the things I use the least. In my case, when I want to take good photos I make sure I have my SLR with me - I'd never leave it to the camera on my phone. That is not to say that the phone is not actually very smart indeed, don't get me wrong, it's just that I use all the other functions a hell of a lot more and I think that's what makes it really smart, not the silly camera...

I totally agree man! That's what I did! Mind you, I'm not a Nikon fan though, I like my Canon 550D a lot more!

You guys are totally missing the point. Photography is also a hobby of mine (I happen to be a Nikon fan) but that does not mean I can't expect that my new phone take pictures at least as good as a phone from FIVE years ago.
If the phone's calculator added one and one and came up with thirty three, would you tell me it's not a problem, and that I shouldn't be using a phone for a calculator?

I have the same thing. Have googled and seems like nobody really cares, which is sad. I have 2 xperia z3 in front of me, one on cm12 (unlocked bootloader) and one on stock. Stock has no issue at all with camera.

Thank you! At least I'm not the only one. I guess the CM12 camera isn't processing the right way (camera sensor related). I installed various other cameras and it didn't help at all.
I even tried to get the stock camera to install on CM (which failed, don't know why, I'm failing knowledge for thus things).
Whether most of the CM users don't realize their camera is broken or there are different kinds of sensors. I recently noticed the infamous light red spot in the center of the picture as well (wasn't there on stock).

Have the same problem... waiting for a fix from cyanogenmod...

Same problem. I guess this is due to Sony implementing a distortion correction in their camera app from the start. So I think it's not CM camera that's broken, but it's rather Sony camera that's too advanced.

Actually it's fallout of the whole disaster of cameras breaking when DRM keys were removed back in the 4.4 days with the original rhine family.
Sony has kept using that damn IMX220 sensor with all of the associated DRM stupidity (despite sensors that they sell to other companies like the IMX214 being superior AND not encumbered by DRM bull****), and as a result there has been a constant battle to have blobs that don't break in funktacular ways when the bootloader is unlocked. There is a positive result of Sony constantly recycling the same sensor:
CM's current approach is to use old 4.3-era camera blobs from the Z1 on the entire family of devices with IMX220 sensors. The problem is that while the Z3 also has an IMX220, it has a different lens, and the vignetting/distortion correction of the Z1 HALs is wrong for the Z3.
cdesai was working on getting newer (and more importantly, device-specific) blobs to work, but held off on finishing it as the guys at Sony are trying to get a more AOSP-friendly HAL for all devices released. Unfortunately, this is taking longer than expected, most likely because of lawyers within Sony.
People just don't seem to understand that the camera app rarely has much if any effect on image quality, unless you're using oddball/esoteric features and shooting modes. All of the heavy lifting is done in the camera HALs and support libraries.
At some point when I get the time I want to try and get the camera running in Omni/Sony AOSP using modern HALs based on cdesai's work, but I haven't been really motivated - for a phone to be a daily driver for me, I don't need a camera. (cell phone cameras suck, in fact I intentionally removed the module from my old Treo 650 so I could bring it to work before my company changed policy on phone cameras due to it becoming impossible to buy phones without cameras).

This is very interesting information, so is it likely that Sony will release the necessary data to make the camera fully functional when not using stock ROM? You mentioned about lawyers interfering and that's got me worried!

I've been hearing chatter about it, chatter which has caused people to focus on things other than getting 5.x device-specific blobs working on various Sony devices, but nothing has happened yet and there's nothing concrete. I might take a crack at it in the next few weeks, but I've got higher-priority things at the moment.
To avoid being on the wrong end of someone's lawyers, you often need to get approval from your own lawyers (and/or someone else's). Remember the Nexus 7 factory image fiasco that was the final straw for JBQ and led to his resignation as the AOSP technical lead? Same deal - no one got sued, but various releases got held up due to fears of lawsuits of someone released something without the right approvals. (Note: The Qualcomm/Nexus7 fiasco wasn't JBQ's only reason for quitting, but it was the final straw. Qualcomm took a big PR hit over that although the reality is that as bad as Qualcomm is with stuff like that, Samsung and MTK are far worse.)

So is there any news? I'm going to change the phone, if there is no positive news. I bought the phone without knowing about the issues when installing custom rom...

At fortunately not, i got the same issue and was hoping for any fix.
It didn't came and i don't know if it will ever come by now.
I bought a Nexus 6 by now.

Well, the camera HAL side of things went up on github last week - but we still don't have mm-camera blobs to my knowledge (unfortunately, mm-camera is where all of the heavy lifting is...). I was on vacation so I haven't had a chance to sync up with Alin to see where things are.

not going to flame, but... tome going from a Z3 to a Nexus is a serious downgrade

I just can't understand it. Sony has the source code which is necessary to build appropriate binary blobs. Technically it should be possible to integrate the corresponding flags and algorithms in a way that custom roms benefit. They have already done it with the Z1. Does anybody know something about the progress ? Does Sony have the intention to enhance their blobs ? Did they mention something about that topic ? It would be nice to hear something new :=)

I am not sure if we can realistically expect MM blobs before sony release there own MM builds. I realise that the concept versions have been in the wild for a while, but thats just not the same.

for the lens distortion, please try the following parameters for barrel distortion in post-processing.
a="0.0132" b="-0.07765" c="0.14683"
You will find these as a profile in lensfun. Works best for me, cause my z3 was the reference. Hope the lenses don't differ too much.
You can use the free graphicsmagick to apply it.
convert input.jpg -distort barrel '0.0132 -0.07765 0.14683' output.jpg.

Is My S6 Camera Faulty? Pics attached!

I have recently had my phone sent in for repair and have received a “fixed phone” which I believe to still be faulty and Samsung do not seem to want to have anything to do with me.
Every time I take a picture in low light, the image will have diagonal streaks where there is a light in the image (see attached images). Bear in mind that I am standing still when taking these photographs.
Samsung have said the following on the photos attached:
“we would not consider these photo's to indicate a fault with the device or camera but instead how the mobile phone camera operates in low/reduced light.”
The samsung presidential office are adamant that the phone is not faulty, hence I have decided to seek a independent opinion from you guys!
So do you believe that this phone is of Samsung quality? (btw my ipod touch takes better low light than these photos!)

As some people have been asking - the film covering the lens have been removed. From physical inspection the lens is in as new condition.

the camera itself doesn't seem faulty as much as the glass covering it. try cleaning it well before taking any photos

Thanks for the reply - the glass is clean on the outside with no visible scratches.
I think the problem is with the lens - maybe not the camera sensor per say.

Your photos are of unacceptable quality, their is no way that this is the way photo's should come out even in low light. They may be grainy in low light but not what you have shown.
Try to factory reset the phone and see if that yields any better results. If the results are the same then keep pushing Samsung to fix or replace the phone. The images are not representiv of the photos that this phone is capable of taking.

Hello - I completely agree! I have already done a FR, Safe mode & diagnostic mode and all produce these images. Samsung just won't budge.
They tried to pass me off by saying it was due to ISO - incredible for a technical company...

At this point you need to have the phone replaced or repaired. You need to be diligent and keep pushing up the Samsung corporate ladder. You will eventually reach someone who will be able to help.
If there is a consumer afairs agency, or Better Business Bureau contact them also. The more more noise you make the better chance you have of getting your issue resolved.

I have just made an account to comment on this thread. The photos you have uploaded are NOT the quality of a S6. I agree with the others - you need to get this replaced. I would not stand for having a phone with such poor image quality.

After having this phone repaired by Samsung twice before I was fed up so I went straight to the CEO. The CEO passed me off to the "presidential office" aka Sean Archer.
He has been persistant that the phone is of the correct standard. I do not think I can go any higher in Samsung. I am definatly going to go down other pathways if Sean continues.

As I stated, contact consumer affairs agencies in your area, it never hurts to get help from them. Good Luck.

Thanks! I am almost at the point in getting rid of all of my Samsung products. The whole experience has left an extremely sour taste in my mouth.

I had this problem before too. But found it it was a smudge on the glass covering the lens so i cleaned it thoroughly. In your case seems to be hardware issue. Goodluck on you problem and yeah keep us posted.

Did you take off the plastic covering? Customer service should replace your phone, especially if they want to maintain their footing in this competitive and over saturated market.

The first few photos look quite good, but when EVERY photo has the effect it gets old very quickly! (Good idea re the plastic covering - sadly that was removed long ago :/ )

There is a small glass/screenprotector film applied on both the camera lens as the heartbeat sensor. I think that when you remove the one from the camera lens the pictures will come out just fine

Yes, highly possible.
I mean, look at the possibilities here, the camera only gets the visuals through one hole that Is made for the camera. It is not the sensor as the focus and sharpness seems to be intact on most of the picture.
What I would suggest I that one of the lenses on the camera has been dirty or is made of low quality, as the light passing through is being spread instead of concentrated into the spots were it appears.
Why does this happen in low light?
That's because the camera is opening the lens a bit more to be able to take in more light in bad light conditions. The more it opens, the more of the lens it uses.
So this is by looking at the pictures, a pretty dysfunctional camera, and something you should not accept being pushed away about. You're having one of the best phones (In terms of specs) out there, do not tolerate this.
Go hard on Samsung, they have plenty of money, and probably have a hard time being nice towards customers. Keep us updated on your progress and eventually feedbacks from Samsung. I had some bad times about Samsung lately too, so I'm curious.

Should get another s6 and have them both take the same picture in low light and than show Samsung the result. If they still say the phone is good throw it in their face, get an iPhone, take the same pic and show them while rubbing it in their face.

I've seen a few threads discussing this issue and even xperiablog picked it up today.
But in the end, I think what's most important is how general users see and feel about it.

I personally haven't noticed it in any of the pictures I've taken so far, but I don't take a ton of pictures either. I have noticed that if you don't give it ample time to focus the pictures turn out terrible. The focus isn't as fast as advertised in my experience.

There are some interesting explainations about this.

Haven't seen any distortion whatsoever. I tried taking shots of grids to reproduce. Do you have to be a certain distance? I'm very happy with the camera so far.

Does anyone know a way to minimize distortion?

hardware issue for sure ,sony should at least fix as much as possible like Samsung
Forwarding:
samsung start selling their S7&S7e model in March last year, some users feedback camera with distortion issue to the samsung official forum, which is the pincushion distortion just like XZP ,but not bad as XZP level. And samsung developer wrote quick reply which said they will study to fix the problem ,After three weeks the S7&S7E received a new FW upgrade which come with a new camera options SHAPE CORRECTION. Yes,when you focusing still can see the distortion on screen,but saved photo has been corrected close to perfect.

Found this issue few days ago when four guys joint photo every one have distortion head and shortened body. Swap back iphone ,much better.

Yeah, I've seen a few photos with person. The distortion is sometimes obvious with even no-liner object.

I do have this issue....
SONY needs to fix it.

I swear I tried various angles,the best effect I can get.Actualy the middle ladies and holding kid has lengthened head too.You will not feel easily because you are not familiar with.Try shoot a picture similar this one and move head up a little bit,OMG!!!
I got confus, someone said sony looking into it and fix it ,some one said sony will not, which one is it?
If it is not I will get refund, go for a S8 ,I tried it really great quality without distortion.

Omg, this is far beyond acceptable level of distortion....

Very unacceptable

They definitely CAN fix this with software and hopefully they will, although I wouldn't get my hopes up as the XZs has the same problem and it still isn't fixed.

I have taken lots of photos, I can reproduce it when trying, like taking a close up photo of my black framed posters, they look bent. But normal everyday photos I was taking look great to me, one I took I thought would be a good example, the flags are pretty straight as they were in real life (they are in the ground at a sort of "U" not lined up straight in real life also as seen in the photo), while other people photos they would of been tilted. Another phtos shows the trees and stuff in the background look as they were in real life also, everything seems normal. I know It is unacceptable from what others are experiencing and I'm pretty sure Sony will get some sort of fix out for people, but it seems others are more affected than other people. I really cant complain about the photos I got out of it so far.

see this sony official dancing woman's photos (above photo)from XZP you can find in your phone,The distortion has been already there very serious, just that wall have bad workmanship make you think it is.Do a anti color you will see the serious distortion just absolutely same as XZP distortion map below .( borrowed from other user analysi post)
look at the merger photo here you will see the coincide curve line.You know what is the most coincidence part that this little woman's head and body just inside the blue box area where have less distortion.XZP review online they all took photo from long distant landscape,no close-range or people so we can see the issue very coincidental .S PHONE and IPHONE review usually have close range shoot and close portrait.
See this official photos.Whether use any angle to shoot these light bulbs should be regular spherical,rgiht ?! But the one closest to the yellow safe area has been distort absolutely serious already.I'm not saying that wide angle don't have distortion, But this level ..........!This is definitely not a photographer and perspective problem.Also the "curve line" certainly affected distortion.
Now the light bulb photo and map explained why my photo will be seriously deformed ,and also explained that no matter what angle and composition I try I can't get one normal photo .Explained that why I use a 4:3 scale will have even more elongate head,also more and more in single person photo like below. (borrow from other user) Exactly same issue like my traveler's photos,which they Complained about.
This is not an ordinary perspective and wide-angle problem or what ever industry standards is.More like a failed lens design ,what is the point to use the lens like that ? Mobile phone camera should be to allow users to take pictures more easily than professional camera.Most users will not use the phone to shoot master style landscape photos. Most of them are normal shooting for ordinary live photo.If this phone designed for some landscape and flowers which are random shape please put it in the ad and packaging.Also even the landscape you can see the distortion easily than other phone.
My old note5 and the new S8 I tried ,Safe area it is roughly in green box see above photo.
I see the user here said that if cut some pixels may be able to get less distortion.If so, I would agree and accept too.And also like Samsung make a late correct option on software would be grateful.
