SPAM SMS from 702-524-6740 - General Questions and Answers

USA phone number sent me a text saying:
"Do you owe more than $10,000 to the IRS or state? Our tax experts can possibly REDUCE or ELIMINATE your back taxes. Reply HELP to see if you qualify!"
7025246740
I don't put my number online, so unless there's a clause I've been overlooking when downloading apps from Windows Mobile Marketplace or Android Market that they can sell your phone number, I don't know how my info got out. Not comfortable with this, had my phone for 8 years, only once before have I ever gotten a spam message.
I went aheaded and reported it on http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-702-524-6740 - can anyone find any details about this, what I might have done that caused me to get on someone's list?
I've already added this number to my Sprint blocked SMS list (the only number on my list!).

I got them too, usually ones saying "Thanks for your participation to claim your $200 giftcard visit www.xxxxx.com To stop futher texts reply STOP". The area codes were from Chicago.
I got quite a few. They vary from website or rewards offered, I wonder how they got my number. I was asking my friends if they put my number on any websites. The only site that has my number is facebook (and I only add people I know), so that might be how these people might be getting these numbers.
I always replied "stop", and the past week I havent had any since. Id be pissed if I didnt have texting in my plan and I was getting charged to be spammed.

Take it down. Doesnt matter if you only add people you know. Facebook is a clusterfuck when it comes to privacy settings.

I got the same junk SMS today, and I don't put my cell number online. I am not going to reply STOP, because that may do more harm than good. Thanks for the link to report the SMS, and good reminder that you can block SMS at Sprint.

TIP: Review your wireless bill

I'm not sure if this has been discussed (if it has and it's been buried, it's probably about time we discuss this again).
I'm looking around the AT&T bloatware (which I'm hoping to remove soon) and touched the Where (W) app. The Terms of Service (TOS) pops up. Some of us will just touch OK right away. Some of us will read. On my first Cap, I just touched OK and quickly saw what Where was about. Didn't like it. Never used it again. I returned my device due to GPS and Power issues and got my replacement Cap. I launched Where again while playing around and this time I read the TOS. In red, it says that if I continue to use this service and if I don't cancel within 7 days, I will be charged $2.99 per month. It also gives me a website to review all of my mobile app subscriptions. I checked out the site and found 3 subscriptions of $2.99, $2.99 and $4.99 per month that I have been paying. I don't remember at all how they got there. They were services I have never even heard of which I don't use.
Review your bill! On AT&T online billing, click "View Full Bill". Scroll to the bottom of the page under "Mobile Purchases & Downloads". See if you've been subscribed to something you didn't even know about.
Addendum: Call or Chat with an agent and have them install their Free "Subscription Block" to your account. It prevents any fee-based monthly services from automatically activating without your knowledge. You will be given a code when AT&T puts this block in effect. When you decide to download an App that requires a purchase or sign up with a fee-based service, you can then use that code to make the purchase.
My bill day is 8/21 and here it is 5 days later... i still can't view the actual charges online. wish i could
I think it's to be expected by now to be charged a monthly fee if you plan on using any of AT&T's bloatware. Personally, I refuse to even open any of their programs for fear of having random charges on my bill. Just avoid them until you get them uninstalled.
From a business perspective it makes absolute sense why they do this. The general population has no idea of the free alternatives. These same people won't notice or care to check out their monthly bill's when an extra 2.99 is tacked on every month. I bet AT&T makes a killing off this stuff.
I agree, when I sold phones they offered a ton of free stuff, as in free for one month and then you started getting charged a couple bucks.
I was nice enough to tell the people to call and cancel the services if they didn't want them but most reps didn't even mention it.

Couldn't find what you're pointing to here. The Mobile Purchases and Downloads part.
You're probably fine then. I guess if you haven't (knowingly or unknowingly) made an online purchase or download, then maybe it doesn't show up. You're probably ok.
Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I did click on the Where app once though, so I was curious. Hopefully nothing went through. That last part about the confirmation code to prevent auto subs though is a good idea.

When did you launch the Where app? It probably won't show until a few days later. If you have successfully launched it it's guaranteed that you will be charged $2.99 per month if you don't have the purchase block feature and if you haven't canceled within the 7 days grace period. Just look out for it in a few days.
This was a couple weeks ago. I think it was even before I got my monthly bill. Hopefully I'm set and don't have to worry about it.
Also, I tried the last part in your original post about talking to a live rep and having someone put that auto-subscription block on the account.. the rep never even heard of it and directed me to call customer service instead.
Hmm
I stupidly clicked on Where. Now how do I cancel it?
Thanks for the heads up. I found 2 charges on my bill for them called att up and had them cancel it as I couldn't find where on my account I could cancel them. I also added the block to my line as I already had it on my daughters line.
Funny thing is that I work for verizonwireless and know all about this and see it every day but I fell victim to it. They credited me back for the charges which I wasn't expecting at all.
Glad I can help.

Call your agent and ask about the Mobile Purchases and Downloads. They should know about this. Not all agents know, as we have read so far. But mine was able to refund and put a block. I had I'm a happy camper!

How to get rid of things I have never subscribe to!??

Come ON.. i know someone has to know how to get rid of this.. Everyone here is pretty smart.. well except me lol.. thanks please help.
Ok.. first i get charged $14.99.. for some stupid **** i didnt subscribe to.. where did it come from IDK!!
I DONT REMEMBER THE NAME OF THIS ONE..
But then i got a little code number to that thing and send STOP.. and it stopped charging me.. OK...
But then i just got this new bill.. now they are charging me another stupid thing for $9.99..!! its this one is called Jumpah Alerts Weather alerts..!!
Wth??? i never did this!!
I AM WITH SPRINT.. I have the HTC EVO..
CAN SOMEONE SHOW ME OR TELL ME HOW TO GET RID OF THIS THINGS??? PLEASE!! THANKS!
That happened to me once, on AT&T. The bill told me I could send a STOP text to a certain 4 or 5 digit number and I did and I ceased to be billed next month. Sucks that it happens but it does. I never sign up for crap like that.
At 4pm on the 25th of every month I get a text message offering the chance to win £1,000 in a FREE quiz and get charged £1.50 to receive it. I have never subscribed to anything so I do not know where they got my number from.
Every month when I get my bill I ring Vodafone and complain and they credit me with the £1.50
One VF that I spoke to told me NOT to text back to cancel as that would tell them that it was a live line and I would get plagued with more of them
It sounds to me like you've wound yourself up in a "spam trap" -- you need to call your local business authority (in the States known as Attorney General) and ask them how you can stop these messages that cost you money. I will warn you though, they will probably tell you just to change your number -- however they will want to take an official record on your behalf of the numbers that are bothering you. You will not have to go to court, but the AG will most likely take some sort of legal action. These "subscription" texters are pretty clever and sending them a "stop" message sometimes can get your number sold to other "subscriptions". I'd ask your carriers if they can change your number and waive the fee (most carriers will if the reason is harassment, which this definitely is). Of course, you'll have to send your friends your new number, but it definitely gives you the advantage of being able to weed out people you don't want to talk to...
I got it resolved.. a tech from sprint helped me.. n he called for me to block THE PREMIUM MESSEGES.. n this bill i didnt get that extra fee from the spam

Beware Mobiletechvideos!

I just wanted to let you guys know about the poor experience my friend has had with this company. I will start by saying that I have used the service before and was very satisfied. So when my friend's Galaxy S4's charging port failed I recommended mobiletech to her. She sent the phone in and that is where the fun began. She did receive an email saying that the phone was received, fast forward two weeks and she has heard nothing about the phone, she emails them and gets no response. After a few days she finds a number and calls. She is told that "Josh" is out and will return her phone call. She finally gets a phone call back the next day and is told that the part had to be ordered, she then inquires why she was notified of the delay, they apparently have nothing to say about that. She was told that they expected the part to be in within the week and that she should have her phone back in about a week. Two weeks have gone by and again no word, not calls, no emails, nothing about what is happening with her phone. IT HAS BEEN OVER 5 WEEKS!. Of course I feel responsible because I recommended her to this company. I am also disappointed because I was going to send a phone in the get repaired. I know a lot of people have had good experiences with this company, as have I, but based on this recent experience I would caution you guys about using them. I will update this post if anything changes.

This is a fairly well known company around here, and like I said I used them before with no issue. Another week has gone by and she still has heard nothing. I was secretly hoping that someone from there would see this post and maybe look in on the issue, but I guess not. I guess I will have to start leaving negative reviews around the internet and see if that gets their attention.

Sorry to hear about your friend's problem with this company. I'm going to write about my experience with this company...which I have to say is just as negative. In short, I placed an order with them to remotely fix my EFS. After setting an appointment up, I never heard another word from them; even after emailing them....STILL NO REPLY. So I was thinking about titling the post...

It's strange with all the great reviews this would be happening. My phone was signed for on Wed and I haven't heard anything but I wish they'd just say they received it (someone signed for it) so I'm hoping come Monday I'll here something. I paid for faster service and haven't heard back via email or phone yet
Mobile Tech Videos - what's up??????
I sent my Galaxy sIII in to them for a "hard brick" problem (yes I tried all OTHER ways before resorting to this). The Phone was sent on 7 July and they received it on 9 July. When I logged on it was shown as being "completed". I had hoped that the phone would be returning shortly. After a week still no phone. I sent them emails..... no answers. I called them and left voice mail...... no answer. I contacted them om Facebook... no answer. I had thought, from people on XDA, that this was a legit service but now I am having second thoughts. If I don't hear from them soon I'll just deny the credit card payment and cut my losses. This really sucks. I hope no one else has this bad of an experience.:crying: :crying: :crying:
I saw somewhere on XDA that they were in the process of relocating and once that was finished they would be able to get everything done since they are so backed up.

I sincerely hope this is true, I just sent my phone for efs repair to them last week with no updates on them "awaiting shipment". Found this thread through google and just hoping to get my phone back now
Hi guys/gals!
OK, let's get some things sorted out for everyone here! What are your order numbers? I actively monitor another thread here on XDA but didn't realize this one was going so I'm glad I searched for it. It is 100% true we are relocating to our brand new facility on a large section of land that I purchased and I've been contracting the entire project. Although it is an exciting transition, it's been tougher keeping up with emails and communication so I am very grateful for everyone's patience. As most know, we run a clean operation and this is unusual for us so I do apologize for the inconvenience a small percentage of you have had bestowed upon yourselves. So, we have around 3 weeks remaining on our build and we plan to be into the building and running completely out of it the week of August 25th and onward. This process has been rolling since mid-March so the end of it is greatly welcomed by my team and my family! I greatly appreciate the customer base we have of loyal XDA patrons and the likes of many other online avenues. In addition I'm hiring 2 employees to add to our team to better assist our customers in the future for better customer service. I look forward to completing that transition and continuing to uphold the high standards we have set and come to be known by in the future.
So, what are your order numbers? Let's see about making this a response thread for those having trouble getting updates from us.
Thanks!

Order #24129. I called, it had a damaged logic board, but was able to get it booted again. Asked if you could remove root, and reset things so I could get my warranty to cover the replacement. Then it was supposed to be sent back. Maybe it is en-route? Also, there was talks about a partial refund since not all services could be rendered.
Any updates hopefully?
Glad I found this, I was worried from the lack of response or progress on my order. My order number's #24137
Here is an update:
My friend got her pone back about a month ago, she was told that a former employee broke the screen on her phone and hid the phone rather than take responsibility. Mobiletech fixed the screen free of charge and the original problem and shipped the phone back. The phone is now working great. Of course my continuing concern is that had attempts to contact been return in a timely manner this probably would have been resolved sooner. I hope this is a lesson learned.
How do I get ahold of these guys at Mobiletech?
I have emailed them and called and I can't get a hold of anyone at Mobiletech. Does anyone know if they are still open?

Hey Josh,
I am a customer of yours (order# 24225) and I gotta say my experience has been a little less than pleasant. I run a cell repair outfit and I had my JTAG tech out on vacation. So I decided to try you guys out since I had seen your videos, and heard ok things about you on XDA.
I understand that you guys are in the middle of a big move but this is the exact thing that you should have as a large post on your main page or at least your payment page. This should also be something that you anticipate when you are still selling "Rush Service" which I unfortunately paid for. Hire more customer service staff during the move so that you can at the very least communicate with your customers. I have had a phone with you for 4 weeks and have had to fight to get any response at all. Many times I have sent emails, and left voicemails and I haven't gotten any response at all. It wasn't until today that I finally got someone on the phone to get an update and they told me that they would have to call me back as your computers are not up. I understand the hiccups and hangups that moving can cause but it is unacceptable that you don't prepare for this and at least have your people doing regular callbacks to customers to keep them updated. My outfit does approximately 50 repairs a day for people local and shipped in and we make it a point to at least call every day or two to let people know what is going on. I also only employ 3 other people so I know this volume at least can be handled with minimal staffing. It just requires a customer-centric attitude from your employees.
All in all my Note 3 has been with you guys for over a month now and I have been promised call backs, told on numerous occasions that it will "ship this coming Thursday" (Been told that for 3 weeks now), and sent emails/left messages that do not even get a response. I am sure you guys know what you are doing and are quite skilled at reviving hard bricked devices. I also know that it is not easy so I commend you for building a business around it. Your lack of communication and ability to deliver what is advertised, and what your employees told to your customers within a reasonable amount of time is what I am disappointed about.
I am still waiting to hear from someone who promised they would call me back in an hour. That deadline has passed by about an hour. Hopefully we can at least get some resolution on XDA going because reaching you guys directly and expecting accountability is obviously out of the question.
Thank You,
Collin

First of all, Order 24289
While you're at it, call every customer with an order older than 4 days--or less, for the poor bastards that paid you extra. Explain the nature of the delay, take ownership of your selfish blunders, tell your customers that you are human.... just do something. Avoiding messages and phone calls makes you look like a total asshat, when you're probably just a little scared of confrontation. I get it, but you need to stop that.
Also, you need to add some HUGE banner text to your website informing other potential victims of your halt in operations. The smart & ethical thing to do would be to disable ordering altogether while you figure out the best way to remove your head from your fourth point of contact.

Hello my order number is #24437. While you didn't update your website until the 27th of August I believe, I mistakenly shipped it too the old address two days prior to the 27th and with no reply or word back from you guys I am really worried. Please get back to me.

Issue with T-Mobile online purchase

(I created a separate thread for this incase others experienced the same issue that I had without having to check through the existing long thread of pages in the other thread. The agents I spoke with mentioned there were others who had the same issue occur):
I tried to order the Galaxy Note Edge shortly after midnight. Since T-Mobile seemed to have an issue with allowing people to log onto their accounts(LOG IN button is grayed out), I was successful in placing an order directly from my phone since the LOG IN button was available there.
Somehow when I clicked the button to submit the order, it glitched and there was no notification that the order was submitted. The only way I found out it was accepted was when I check my debit account and saw the money was taken out in full(I chose to pay in full for the phone).
Today I tried to chat with an agent who told me that in their system the order was pending because it was in EIP(for people who chose to pay by monthly payments). There was too much confusion and it seemed that due to the glitch that I would end up paying the full amount plus the amount for people who chose to pay monthly. I eventually lost connection with the chat and to avoid all the issues/hassles, I called in and had my order cancelled.
The unfortunate thing is the person who I was speaking to said I have to wait 24 hours before placing a new order. I'm not sure if this is due to the possibility it could conflict with my existing cancellation.
For others who might have experienced this issue when ordering the Note Edge(or on prior orders), would there be a problem if I place an order without waiting the 24 hours since the first order attempt? How about if I submit the new order using a different credit/debit card ?
Thanks for any insight you all can give me.

If you are an existing T-Mobile customer, you can log into your account and add the Note Edge to your cart. On a prior screen(before the one that you can submit the order), there will be a tab near the top of the page where you can choose to just pay for the phone in full(this way it will allow you to purchase without a cellphone plan).
Thank you. Unfortunatley it will not let me create an account withought a tmobile cell number. This helps though, thank you.

You're welcome. I do believe that in order to buy the phone without a plan you would need to be an existing T-Mobile customer(and thus have a cell phone number).

You've been had, it seems they sold you a device that has been blacklisted due to non payment on their bill.
The only way to activate this phone is for the former owners bill to be paid, then they will remove the block.
Otherwise, sell it, but make it known to any buyers that it does not have a valid IMEI/blacklisted.
Don't cheat someone the way you were cheated, cut your losses and consider it a lesson learned, then be smarter the next time you buy a used device. Remember, when you find a deal that's too good to be true, it usually is.
If you buy from ebay, only buy devices that say they have a good/valid IMEI and only from sellers with a very high rating.
The safest option for buying used devices is to use Swappa.com.

Not sure if you got my earlier reply I just want to thank you for taking the time to answer my question.. Verizon totally left me in the dark basically. It's weird that Verizon won't let me pay a balance if there is one left won't lmk anything. Especially seems how I'm on a sister network and ultimately I'd be bringing them money in not even bring the phone in. Lol anyways I appreciate it again may try and sell it no worries won't do unto others what was done onto me feels kinda crappy.. ttyl

They won't discuss or handle anything specific about an account with anyone but the authorities or the owner of the account, for security and privacy reasons, they are bound by law on this.
On a side note, if you bought the device from eBay then eBay might reimburse your purchase because what you received was not what was listed, you didn't get what you paid for. It wasn't listed as invalid IMEI, it was posted and sold as if it was all legit when it wasn't. eBay might handle this for you, it's worth a shot, at least.
