Does Android 2.2 support international character sets? - General Questions and Answers

I am told that Android 2.2 (Froyo) supports international character sets, and can display Hebrew, Arabic, Esperanto, etc. correctly.
Could someone please confirm this for me?
Just point your browser at a Hebrew or Arabic newspaper (ynet.co.il, for example) and tell me whether or not you only see square boxes.
If possible, I would also appreciate a screen shot, so that I can see whether it handles right-to-left text correctly.

Need programmer for a small job, or help to do it myself.

I added Hebrew support (keyboard and text recognition) to my xda, and I use also the Citipack Foldable Keyboard. The thing is that the keyboard doesn't work with the hebrew letters. I need someone to write the driver for the keyboard that make it work with the hebrew software keyboard. I have the authorization from PDAC, the firm who sells the Hebrew support to access the codes for their software for this task. if it works well, then citipack keyboards can be imported to Israel (Actually there's no foldable keyboard with hebrew for the pocket pc).
Someone interested in such a thing? Please contact me

Hi
May be also for ARABIC !!!
Why not ? they are both Bidi ..
yes, why not?
I don't know the arab market and support for PPC, I'm pretty sure the have keyboards enabled.
I would guess the fact that one is Israeli, and also sells Hebrew support probably isn't precisely a selling point in most of the Arab world today, right?
Good effort
I too use Hebrew on my device.
Again, please read the date on the last post before replying.

Simple Right-to-left language solution?

Does one exist?
For example: my phone can see Hebrew letters. However, these letters are displayed backwards when read in Hebrew, it being a right-to-left language.
In english, it would be like getting a text message like this:
?gniod uoy era woH ,!olleH
Click to collapse
You can read it backwards, but it gets really annoying with long messages. And it makes it impossible to type long messages as each word has to be thought of backwards.
After installing a Hebrew font, it's no problem seeing the hebrew letters, but their Left-to-right (English) coordination is where it gets confusing.
Mind you, I don't need a Hebrew UI, or Hebrew menus, just the ability for the Hebrew text to display correctly (in the right-to-left direction) so I can send and receive text messages in the language.
Anyone got a clue as to what can solve this?
Thanks in advance.
you don't need to write backwards when writing an sms.
it will be ok when received on a hebrew supporting phone.
(thats the way i've been writing hebrew for monthes now.)
try it yourself and see..

You're right, but the reading part is still a big hassle
Try investigating the arabizer techniques, but change to a Hebrew font...
The OS doesn't natively support Right to Left AFAIK.

It's sad because the fonts apparently supports it. At least they support chinese as some of my contact have chinese name and they appear properly in the text editor.
What's really missing is the IME or a virtual keyboard

Not that sad, geez, the phone is a month old...

It's sad when a product is restricted to iso-latin. Even if the product was not intended for outside of the US market a good chunk of the population in the US speak and use a second language on a daily basis. Whether it's Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Russian or something else.
I18N is a pain, and managing different IME is another bigger one so I understand why it was postponed to a future date.
so no chance for arabic support till now
heeeeeeellllllllpppppp

For Arabic support: http://www.2shared.com/file/4721532/c336ef8d/update.html
It's JF1.4 (RC30) with arial as the fallback font. You can read arabic msgs and websites but no writing yet.
Same goes for everyone else: If you need your native alphabet, just replace DroidSansFallback.ttf with whatever font that supports your language.
are the letters connected too?
looks like someone made it already.. but i hope that we will be able to get it free, as it is with everything "OPEN source"

[Q] arabic support for htc hd7

can i get arabic support for my htc t9292
It complex script language,
so it will develop after mango.
my language too.
Locale ID
i don't think so...MS put so many languages in mango...but i don't think there is any right to left language...like persian...like arabic...
in mangob2 it's like the same before....don't supported right to left languages in web...
Until Microsoft adds official support for it, just use the Arabic Hub app from the marketplace, you'll find it at the bottom of the list of apps though listed as "المحور العربي" (Arabic Hub).
What's in stall for the future post-Mango? John McConnell explains the challenges:
"While I hope you’ll agree that Mango is a step forward, I’m all too aware that there’s still much to do. Two areas we’re working hard to address in future releases are languages with complex scripts and extending services to more markets. Let me briefly explain.
Complex scripts are used to write languages such as Arabic and Hindi, where the displayed character depends on its neighbor (“contextual shaping”), and languages written right-to-left such as Hebrew and Urdu. Many of the controls used in Windows Phone require enhancement to properly display such scripts."
