Help in choosing from 3 devices and 2 OS - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
Currently have an Axim X51v with WM6.1 and want to replace it with a Smartphone. I'm on Sprint and I narrowed my search down to 1) Touch Pro 2 with WM6.1, 2) HTC Hero 3) Samsung Moment, both with Android.
TP2 would give me a familiar OS and stylus. It's also going to cost $100 more, and I am concerned with battery life and speed - it's got a slightly slower processor than Axim. Not sure if the screen is bright enough in direct sunlight - Axim's isn't. If I get it I woud probably get rid of TouchFlo3D and install iPhoneToday, PocketBreeze, Calligrapher and FTouchSL.
OTOH I have no idea about Android, I'm concerned that I won't be able to find a decent replacement to ListPro, Excel or PocketInformant, and syncing data may be difficult (my employer blocks Google Docs for security reasons).
So can someone educate me on what can I expect moving from WM to Android, and if either Android device is faster or otherwise better than TP2 ?

Go for the Samsung moment! windows mobile on tp2 swallows! It lags too much and the keyboard sucks unless you have skype the battery life is ok so is the screen. But the proccessor SUCKS! i would know from experience. it was rooted and would lag even with 6.1!
Plus android has alot more apps and flash player. And the moment has a keyboard which is a plus. The hero sense lags it at times so i wouldnt recommend it

I basically have 2 concerns - losing a stylus and thus the ability to take handwritten notes, and losing ability to move around documents without having to jump through hoops.
Also, have a question regarding multimedia capabilities - how would you rate Moment's ability to play MP3s (sound quality)

Qualitys good i played with one when i stayed at my friends house. Im not gonna lie the android music player has thee worst graphical UI though. Unless you get the htc music app running your stuck with a lame player. If you dont find it loud enough root it and install audio hack. Its 1.99 i think but its well worth it. If you get the hero root it too and if it gets slow use set cpu its free here but it costs on the android market. Let me know when you decide

YES! If you need the android apps, you can get them on the TP2, the keyboard is the best on any device i have ever tried and it isn't laggy, the sprint firmware can be upgraded to a customROM over at PPCGeeks and here in the RhodW forum
If you do want Android native, i would get the Evo 4G, not the hero or the Moment. If i lived in th US i would get one, but i'm in the UK
I hope you make the right choice
Good luck

OK, thanks both of you guys for creating an utter confusion.
I do a lot of work related stuff on my Axim and WinMob with all its limitations has many tools for that. The main ones for me would be PhatPad for notetaking with stylus (like having a book of Sticky notes with you at all times), Excel, ListPro for information gathering, PocketInformant and Pocket Breeze for scheduling, and so on. Going with TouchPro2 I'd retain all of these tools. But then it's 2x more expensive, and possibly slow.
Samsung Moment seems to be snappier, Android is from what I heard more fun to use, and I save some bucks. OTOH would I still be able to do all the stuff I did on WM with it ? Who knows.. in the end I'm afraid it's going to be a coin toss.
Would it be a true statement that Android on Moment is faster, smoother and has longer battery life ? Also, what about reliability - I've had 2 phones from Samsung, one was great, another one piece of junk.

Yee!
Sorry bout that haha. But the tp2 sucks trust me im a previous owner and i spl unlocked it. After every rom id try it start to lag sometimes needing a reset. For some reason wm is like running hero rom on the g1. Flies at first but it sucks after a while. And the tp2 keyboard is aight. I personally like smaller keyboaRDS. And the optical trackball and notifications bar is better on the moment but like the other user. The evo 4g is key to success! HAha

New polaris, not that impressed (ex wizard)

Hi , got my new orbit 2 (polaris) the other day and im not that impressed by it as yet.
I came from using my trusty vario(wizard) and it doesnt seem (as yet) much quicker than that.
I know it has built in gps, radio etc. But i cant put me finger on it why it hasnt impressed me much. i played a bit of video on it and it was a bit jumpy, also scroll is a bit iffy.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what it can do and do better than my old phone?
Or what to use to make it a pleasure to use.
Thanks.

Believe me..it could be one of most impressif pocketphone's out there..but the only problem with this device is that HTC didn't do there homework that good and put this device to soon on the market.
But when the new firmware (with drivers) come's online it will be one of the finest pocketphone's out there at the moment.
The only think for us is to pray that HTC will make the firmware with the drivers, otherwise it will go into be books as a slow and bad preforming device 4-ever and HTC will loose a lot of trusty customers!
But like the other also said..it's being sad in a lot off topics now..so lets use the other threads for the complenning
i agree. i bought mine a week ago. the touch cruise and i am not that impress coming from a tmobile mda aka wizard. i still use my wizard. love it but cruise slow. internet is slow. features are wack. the only good thing is the radio but i dnt listen to radio and tomtom navigation. i live in nyc i use the subway so not that usefull to me. htc better come good or its apple for me.

This is exactly what I'm thinking...HTC really messed this wicked phone up....Gonna wait for the Xperia or Samsung i900.
You aren't getting drivers for it. You are getting a software patch that helps fix a few things like scrolling and some basic touch screen functionality, nothing to do with video.
unfortunately, if you want to watch movies you have to convert them yourself and spend the time doing it, then you can have some fun with high quality movies or shows.
i will think twice before I buy my next handset. I don't expect the most amazing device in the world, but I don't like to be mislead in advertising.
Funny, I find my Cruise does everything I ask of it. I find it an improvement in almost every way over the KJAM (OC'ed to 247mhz), and the Treo 750.
Can someone give me some links to help please? Thanks.

How is your cruise setup?
I've just installed Coreplayer .....runs pathetic....picture hardly moves when running a 480MB avi.
Camera...you can forget that....never seen such rubbish...I'm sure the image quality is good...nobody should have to wait that long to take a picture.
I have a UK O2 Orbit 2....got rid of the O2 taskbar icon (after reading it was a memory hogger).
Installed :
HTC Home Screen...
HTC Theme (black) tsk file 102KB vs 200+KB for the 02 Theme.
Skype
Core Player 1.1.1
Opera 9.33
OTO
Calculator skin
WMP Skin
Advanced Configuration
PocketCM Keyboard (one of the best touch apps....never knew I could touch type that fast)
I for one am willing help in what it takes to have this phone running to at least 2/3 of its potential. Compared to my friend's Hermes...thats faster....got suckered into touch and WM6 Pro....
Where as touch v1 is a decent attempt (O2 just messed it up) I'm sure V2 only get better...Microsoft really need to integrate touch into the OS..(whats with the small up arrow next to keyboard selection on the taskbar...with so much empty space around it?....saving on real estate ?).
To me this OS looks/feels the same as the one I had on my SPV C500 years ago...(have you seen the WM6 original calculator !) 3rd party can only do so much.
Well I think HTC better watch out....to sell an expensive phone half finished...well what you say...advertising SOLD IT. But theres a few phones coming out soon and if they utilize the hardware and have half decent software then HTC will have to up the ante...should be interesting.
At the moment we will have to wait for what improvements HTC brings to this COOL LOOKING phone.
Sorry...I'm just a bit disapointed.

Welcome to the world of Windows Mobile. However, the inclusion of Touch Flo is probably the most unique WM experience offered by a WM device.

Aside from the video driver issues (which BTW hasn't bothered me that much), what software do expect HTC to ship with the device? HTC has done a good job integrating TouchFlo and HTC today into WM. It sounds to me like your complaints software-wise are more directed to MS rather than HTC.

Since both devices are the same performance and feature-wise your only decision is whether you require a physical keyboard on the Tytn II.

Thanks all...going to install Coreplayer 1.2.0....I did the tweaks, glyph and sound on the shutter..no effect really...maybe I've got a dud....warms up too in my hand....
Also if anyone is running the HTC home screen...which one is it ?...there so many to choose from...
Is there one specifically for the Polaris ?...I've seached and found many versions and variations.
but why does it seem as slow as my wizard? I thought the processor was supposed to be much faster? And the scrolling is finnicky to say the least.
i just downloaded coreplayer 1.3.0. whats so special about core player?
it's the player which supports most formats
I have the Orbit 2, and when I first tried using Internet Explorer I was very disappointed with the extremely slow and jerky scroll, if you could call it 'scroll'. Now that I have managed to install SPB Pocket Plus with the 'Smart Scroll' feature enabled, I'm now happy with that aspect. I haven’t tried video on it yet, but my thoughts now are that I do like the device, especially because of its form factor and looks. Before the Orbit 2 I had the SPV M3100 (Hermes), prior to this I had the SPV C500, and prior to that I had the original windows Smartphone, the Orange SPV.
For me, the Orbit is a step in the right direction, but I will be a little disappointed if video is unusable.
Overall I am happy with my Cruise (I have gotten a sim-free version). Apparently a number of people complain about speed, and I have noticed that this is also related to owners of Cruise who are on the O2 network. My guess is O2 loaded their version with useless software which reduces performance.
Regarding the video issue, I user Coreplayer 1.2 (coreplayer is a must), I encode my videos in QVGA resolution and they seem fine to me. True, you won't be able to take an existing DVD quality rip and expect Cruise to show it well, even in Coreplayer.
Performance-wise, Cruise could probably do a little better given its specs, but overall, I still think it is a very good and practival device.
Hopefully video issue will be addressed, I am not 100% confident it will be fully resolved though. Though the device works fine for me, it is quite upsetting to know that its hardware is not fully utilised...
As my closing statement have a look at the text below, from
gizmodo. com/gadgets/what.s-wrong-with-windows-mobile/whats-wrong-with-windows-mobile-and-how-wm7-and-wm8-are-going-to-fix-it-333536.php
=-=-=-=--=-=
Microsoft is working to fix the whole WM platform. Here's how:
Even when using a super sluggish WinMo phone, it's less an example of a manufacturer not meeting the minimum requirements for RAM, ROM and CPU power, and more a problem of software which has not been optimized to run on it. This is often the service provider's fault. For example, two phones with the same 400MHz processor can be totally different depending on how much optimization the provider decides to do. When you're using a slow phone, blame the provider.
On the same token, the Windows Mobile OS team actually does set a minimum hardware requirement for the "core" features of the OS to make sure the user experience is a good one, but the minimum-requirement bar may be set too low. When companies add apps on top of the core, things start to wobble. Product manager Derek Snyder told me that Microsoft will raise the bar for minimum requirements to a level where phones can be loaded with more software without slowing down the most basic of tasks (e.g. sliding open the AT&T Tilt from portrait to landscape mode).

The (LEO) HD2 is making want to go back to windows

Since the G1 and now the mytouch both of which I flashed the Hero rom on, I just found my perfect business phone and this one could be a true Iphone killer and it has windows. I have not used a windows based phone since the dash and now the HD2 is making want to try it again. I live off outlook so that a plus but playing with the touchpro 2 I dont like some items, but like the Hero rich widgets, have you guys heard of anything?
Have you tried Androkidd 0.8, I installed it on my Pro2 yesterday and it seems good.

Cool, another Leo thread!
Since I posted this has there been any development on getting andriod on the HD2? Now that the Evo has come out I am hoping the process has been helped?

The developers have finally overcome the segfaults which previously prevented the Linux kernel from booting fully, meaning that Linux can boot fully, and Android is possible. However, the touch screen doesn't have any Linux drivers, meaning that until someone develops a touch screen driver from scratch, that Android (or any other Linux userland) is unusable without a USB keyboard/mouse plugged in .
The EVO 4G seems similar to the HD2, and it is reasonable to think that it may help in development of Android for the HD2, but it's actually quite the opposite. The hardware used in the HD2 is much different than that in the EVO. Besides the common appearance, the two devices are completely independent of one another, and the developers are mostly on their own. Just a small word of advice: don't ever buy a phone because of features that have yet to be developed, as there is absolutely no guarantee that Android/Linux will ever work fully on the HD2.
Leo is a great device, and it´s not outdated as it has the same or even more power than some newer devices.
WM is doing well on it because it´s fast processor
I agree withthe above poster. I think HD2 and WM have years left. Right now its the only phone I can do everything I want with, except HULU, which I firmly beleive will come. Heres what Android or iOS4 or WP7 will have to do out of the box for me to give up WM6.5
1. Play nice with my hava box for live TV.
2. Emulate PS1 game flawlessly
3. Play the PS1 games with a wireless PS3 controller.
4. Play any kind of video in existance thats under 2GB in file size with no frame dropping or quality loss.
5. Word, and Excel
6. a FTP program
7. Cut, copy, paste, and open with...
8. Streaming radio and play, OGG's, AAC, and other off brand codecs
These are my main concerns when I hear about WP7 coming. I fear we may loose all the killer software that has been build the last 5 years. Hopefully WP7 will have a compatability mode. LOL

Because we are the minority. those lovely features you speak of wont be present in most phone os going forward. Apple has shown that dumb down super simple phones are the way to go. btw I dont mean dumb down in the sense that they suck. What I mean is, we as a community are use to having free reign on what we do with our phones. The average user will do more harm than good with these features. With great power comes great responsiblity.
I like android! I havent seen a single thing that it cant do. Infact because of people like cyanogen its grown at record breaking speeds to be come a contender.
One of the best things about android is I have been able to install albeit modified versions of android on my g1 and my friends droid.
Now hes currently running froyo before motorola even has a chance to update it.
Thanks for the posts....I am using my Gen 1 Mytouch and while I like it a lot, its starting to be to slow for me.
I think the reason why I won't to windows is that I like the Andriod market a lot, being able to get a program , etc
But I am a windows guy on my laptop running outlook, office, etc and I am thinking it would be better for my business to switch to WM?
Maybe I need to research the market to see what I can get
Come on in the waters fine! With the snapdragon wimo 6.5 really pops. Its equal to or greater then ios4 or android. Once you get cookiemonsters app up, everyone at your work will be jelous of your phone. From comparing my multiple wimo phones with friend iphones and droid phones I can easily say once my rom is selected and phone is tweaked its actually much more stable then the other phones.

A few issues regarding lag, text message +Sd card and apps

Hey is it just me or is the FUZE just slow and lags all the time? i flashed the rom and put in the ENERGY ROM but it's still slow sometimes, especially when I text but even in general functions.
Does the internal memory have anything to do with speed? Is it possible for me to transfer all my text messages to my microsd (and to save future ones on my microsd card)? Thanks!
I was looking at apps for touch pro using the live marketplace and other sources as well. Man there aren't too many good ones; i think windows probably as the worst app selection, which iphone being best and android second am I right? Can someone correct me on this? For instance, I was just trying to find an English to Chinese dictionary; i searched for hours and I finally came up with one decent dictionary. In comparison, I used my friend's Iphone to look for one and a ton just came up in a few minutes wtf. man I'm really getting frustrated with this phone lol; i thought it'd be really great but honestly now i'm kind of disappointed. i might even just get an iphone just because there's so much platform support for it. So many websites have apps specifically designed for iphone that it's really convenient...the same can't be said for htc =/.
Have a look at these Chinese Dictionaries:

Laggy device ! I'm on standard latest 6.1 ROM & not having any real issues. Probably related to ROM, settings or installed software.
Windows Mobile is far more flexible than iphone ect but it does need more user knowledge to get the most out of it.
I already looked at those for the most part...I was just looking for free dictionaries lol. I don't want to pay for one because 1) I'd rather use my money on other things lol 2) if i reset the device, I'm not sure if I can reinstall it so that could be a waste of money.
I can't believe one of them is 200 dollars wtf lol.
Btw, I would think that the game support for Windows Mobile would be great because well it's PPC so I assumed games would be easily ported from PC. Man the games suck on PPC lol. I tried installing COD2...the controls were so bad I gave up. The only good games I've gotten are NFS and this game called Meon.
Hmm so you think that the device's hardware is laggy or is it something about my phone? Do phones get slower over time?
I think the lack of support for Windows Mobile compared to Iphone and Android is definitely one of the big problems. the latter two OSs are so much more user friendly and intuitive (although they have their own problems but I think the benefits outweigh the cons). If only Iphone had a slideout keyboard lol...
Really depends on what you use the device for in regards to applications, I have software related to engineering calculations that is only available to PPC platform plus I like the hackability of CE platform giving the ability to make things how you want them.
Games are a bit limited but you can find a few good ones & also a few good emulators for sega ect.
Support is good for the PPC but not so much in the average mobile users needs for games & gizmo apps.
Is there a way to save all my text messages onto my microsd card and access it from there instead of saving it on the internal memory?

Is Android more stable than WinMobile?

I currently use a HTC TP2 with WinMobile 6.5 OS. While I have used PPC and WinMobile for perhaps ten years now, I am getting fed up with the instability of WinMobile. It crashes (hangs) about once a day. The only way to maintain stability is to watch the "Free RAM" gauge, and soft-boot it when it drops from 85 to 65 MB.
I am now considering moving over to Android (HTC Desire).
The main reason I have stayed with WinMobile for all these years are the apps I use. I suspect the instability I have experienced is using SPB Mobile Suite as a preferred UI and some other third party apps. Nonetheless, the instability is frustrating.
QUESTIONS
1) Is Android alot more stable than WinMobile (how often does it crash)?
2) Does Android allow using a microSD card with is formatted with FAT (I want to sometimes pull out the card and plug it into my desktop (WinVista) for sychronization and file transfer)?
3) Can Copy-Paste function be used across apps on Android?
4) Does Android have software that syncs with my desktop MS-Outlook (email, calendar, contacts)?
... thanks.
Android vs WinMobile.
Hello. Yes, it is a hole lot more stable.. and faster.
so. 1) on official roms it never crashes on itself (if the app is badly programmed, then it is the app that crashes and closes)
if you don't do anything naughty (like installing weird stuff that mangles with your cpu / os internals), the os is perfectly 101% stable.
2) by default every android phone out there uses microSD cards formatted with FAT32. there are "naughty" modifications (see above at point 1) that makes one partition the microSD for swap and ext3 for applications.
3) by design.
4) by design. it also syncs everything with google servers and exchange servers.
Android is compared to WinMob the first flight to the Moon
Android is very stable and other things u want u will get!
Android is just Perfect =) Iphone cant be better with his apps/games Android is much more then just an Appstarter like the Iphone!
I own and HD2 and my two previous phones were "Diamond 2" and "Diamond" so I've tryed all flavors of winmo for some time, and now that I'm running Android on my HD2, I can tell you that Android is really 101% stable, nothing to do with Winmo, there is no way I'm going back to winmo, plus I've found everything I used on Winmo in Android.
I was using a sprint tp2 and did the winmo 6.5 update and instantly regretted it. I hate that thing with a passion. It constantly lagged horrendiously and froze at least once a day. I got the HTC hero and satisfied to keep it until the dev's can no longer keep updating it.
There is an android port for the tp2, but not sure current status of it. You can run it for a little taste of android before spending money. Check craigslist and eBay for used phones. Got my hero for $100 with no contract extension when it was going for ~$80 in store with extensionand rebates.

Even though android isn't fully developed for the HD2, it is as stable as windows mobile. When android is finished, it will be the clear winner in stability.
I just made the switch from the TP2 to the Desire about 2 weeks ago and from the start I have been very impressed. I fought constantly with different ROMs, tweaks and setups on WM trying to get it to just work when I needed it to. The desire isn't perfect, but in comparison it blows away the TP2. I was nervous about losing my hardware keyboard but I don't miss it as much as I thought I would. Still sometimes I wish I had it. It's worth a try though. You can always return the Desire and go back to your TP2.
Well I went from a unlocker tp2 switching between Mighty Rom and energy Rom. That phone did lag terribly a couple times a day, and is just way too slow. I upgraded to a rooted EVO switching between Vaelpak's rom and CM-6.0. Obvoiusly the EVO blows away that phone in every reguard. Overall Android has similar functions comapred to WM6.5 but is easier to use once you get used to it, and there is no comparison with the available apps for Android, you'll thng you won the lottery with all the apps you can get. Good luck
Touch -> Mogul -> TP -> TP2 -> EVO = free at last
Android 2.x's are much more stable than WM6.x's for me...no turning back now
I feel very happy since i installed android in my hd2, it runs smoothly and fast, no hangs. The only issue that i've found is the battery drainage

Beeing a smartphone user for the last 5 years, I have tried, Symbian, WinMo, iPhone and Maemo and finally gone to Android. IMO if you are wandering between WinMo and Android in therms of functionality I must say that Android is the winner. It is more user friendly, more intuitive and I personally find it easier to use it. Even the new iPhone 4 fails to impress me when compared to my HD2 running Android 2.2.
The stability is virtually the same they both have certain things that will cause hangups and issues.
WinMo is NOT made for touch screen and any touch stuff going on is based on Sense or another overlay. Microsoft did what they could to get to the touch generation but it's a Gen behind for sure but it isn't a bad system. It just isn't "smart" when it comes to multitask.
Android is pretty customizable and is supported by a BEVY of programmers.
Here's the kicker though which may cause a problem soon:
Android is Linux based and Devs hate Linux for gaming etc. Win7 will be so much easier to port for since many devs are fmailiar with Window Programming and Win7 will make porting iOS games very easy.
For now, Android, for later, win7 may be the winner.
When I had a WinMo phone. I had to pull out battery quite some times as it freezed. On Android I've never had any problem. Even if something would crash. The app would force close and everything would be fine.

QUESTIONS
1) Is Android alot more stable than WinMobile (how often does it crash)?

By leaps and ******** bounds, man. The stock Android 2.2 firmware on my Nexus One is way more stable than any cooked Windows Mobile ROM I've ever tried on the three Windows Mobile devices I've used (MPx200, HTC_Excalibur, HTC_Fuze).

No; it's application specific. Yes, it's completely stupid.

[Q] htc evo n iphone

Hi evrybody I'm a new user in this forum and I'm in a conflict that hope you guys could resolve with your knowlegde. I'm actually writing this thread with my Palm treo 750, I hope that this is the right spot for this thread cause I've been reading a lot of post in many forums and websites but I've got my self just more confused of what to do. Ok I've just brought this smartphone for my distantance and pocket connectivity esigence, I was new in the smartphone world and I found my self mistaken about evrythings. I wish to traw this phone in the bin rightnow. It's making me crazy! Costantly freezing and doesn't do what i need it to do. I need a smartphone that could give me video call via 3g or 4g with VoIP and single VoIP call, flash support (for flash website) and java support (always for the same reason), make fb and msn chat streaming video and music, writing and making photos/videos. I hate when my phone freeze without any apparently reason or lag cause I'm listening music and using internet in the same moment, plus my battery life is about 3 hours. I've been looking in internet and at the end I've arrived to the point that I have to decide betwen Htc evo and Iphone 4. I've tried Iphone 3 and I didn't like it at all, I hate the soft keyboard and the OS doesn't support flash. I've never tried htc evo but I know that andoid is awesome and support flash (I don't kow about java) both have soft keyboard but both have even hard keyboars with witch i can upgrade my phone with (so keyborad will not gonna be a problem) both OS have a lot of free and pay apps they are very versatile. I'm not so confortable with the fingertouch os but I can buy stylus for both mobile. The screen and the camera in the evo are better then the Iphone, and android it's really easy to use (for what I've seen on m.youtube cause I can't see normal youtube) instead of the iphone OS (witch I've found a bit tricky). The iphone have no expandible memory card, (evo does) and (if I'm not wrong) you can tweak android a lot more (and with less problem) than the iphone. So... I've got a calderon of confiuson in my head right now and I need some clarification because maybe what I'm saying is not correct and for sure most of you guys know more than me about. Plus this is just correlated througth my esigence, cause at the end a smartphone it's strictly related of what you want to do with that. Cheers guy, I'm sorry for the large thread but I wanted to be the most possibly clear. I thanks already you guys for this wonderful forum (that I've been using a LOT) and for the one's of you that gonna gimme suggest about.
