could we mod our phones like this?
i know we dont have OLED screens, but i like the whole dim to red thing when the battery is low.
or even maybe a red faded border or something.
i'm sure most of us read hack-a-day... maybe.

Want to really stretch the battery life on your phone? If you have an OLED display [Jeff Sharkey] may have the answer. He did some testing with his Nexus One to see if color alterations can save on current. Darker colors draw less amperage and he found that the red pixels are the most efficient. He did a little work with SurfaceFlinger, which handles the display on Android devices to make this easy, but what will you get by going red? He measured that using only the red pixels dropped the current use down to 35% of what the full color display was pulling. This reminds us of those efforts to save energy by running a black background with Google. Whether you use it or not his post is an interesting read.

I’d like to see a modified driver that will slowly get more and more “red” (lowering the power on each other color proportionally) as the battery drops.
If you started at 20% and went full red at 10%, then it would act as a cool way of warning you your battery is low while saving power at the same time.

Huh. Pretty interesting. Cyanogen has a Nexus One and since he is the most popular developer I would imagine he knows something about it. It wouldn't surprise me if it has crossed his mind already. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
I bought a Kittehface live wallpaper. I read that they didn't use very much of the battery. But after having a really bad day with my battery, I decided to go back to a still wallpaper and the battery is so much better. I hate that features on the phone are basically unusable because the battery gets sucked dry. Have to have brightness way down too.
You wold think it would only draw resources when one of the home screens is actually displayed.... I think when I had mine running a live wallpaper (beautiful widegets weather wallpaper) it only showed like 5% battery usage from android.
Just wanted to get a better opinion on something I had thought of.
Does leaving the backlight on with the clock app going, perhaps like overnight. Does that bear any negative effects on the screen. Especially if you do it regularly?

Generally all screens would have a burn-out effect. But since the life span of a phone is short (assuming we change phones within an year or two), the possibility of anyone noticing it within that period would be very small to none.
It would be cheaper to get a night clock
Suggestion: If u could change the title to something like "reg. screen burnout" or something that's more related to question, it would be appreciated.
Alarm Clock Plus
I use this app for all my alarms and one thing I like most about it is you can configure it so that when you plug it in at nite ( i keep mine beside the bed) it displays the time in a screensaver fashion. I built a little stand for mine out of styrofoam that holds it at the best angle for viewing from the bed.
New to this made a wallpaper for my note and would like to share
Nice, but note should only use very dark wallpapers to save battery and screen life.

There's a difference between "should" and "could". You can use a black or dark wallpaper to save battery, but i haven't noticed any dramatic increase in battery life after using a completely black wallpaper, so i'm using whatever i want now. Light or dark, it doesn't matter unless you want to safe 0.000002% battery per hour.
Either way, very nice wallpaper! You got skills!
Some more i made like 5 years ago i dont do it any more wish i could lol

Bingo. Because unless if you leave that "dark wallpaper" image there constantly and not have anything else on your Android Home screen, there is very little battery benefits of using a dark wallpaper. Why? Simply because you'll be swiping through your home screen, some of your icons are bright, some of your widgets are not dark, etc. So effectively, as you swipe, the dark regions will be activated again and your perceived battery gain is nullified.
If you really want to save battery, turn off the screen.
thanks!!!!
nice ..

Hey,
I am brand new to Android and my HTC One X. I just got it about a week and a half ago. I love the Bubbles live wallpaper, but I do have a concern about battery drain while having any live wallpaper active.
So my question is, does a live wallpaper have a significant hit on the battery?
I can get about 12 - 14 hours of "normal" use out of my One X with auto-brightness on, and in a mixed LTE / WiFi coverage. The phone is still new to me so I'm still tinkering and learning. Switched from an iPhone and love Android so far and the One X. I've noticed though that the screen is the biggest consumer of my battery. Usually around the 65% mark. While phone is 2nd and then various other things.
This was certainly true for older phones, like my HTC Aria. However, I didn't really notice that much of a battery hit with this phone. I used the bubbles wallpaper for the first week I had the phone too. I realized that the novelty went away after a while and now I use static pictures.
It could just be that the battery life is so good on this phone anyway that I didn't notice a hit. Either way, yes, it does use more battery. Whether that difference is negligible now, I'm not sure. If you like the wallpaper I suggest you use it.

I haven't really noticed it, but try it out for yourself and let us know how it went.
Hell, I'll test too.
EDIT: I underclock to 912 MHz most of the time btw. No lag so far.

I like the wallpaper, but I'm finding that the battery life kinda sucks. And I don't know if that's just because it's a new gadget and I'm playing with it a lot, or if there is something wrong and it's draining my battery quicker than normal. For example. At 12 noon it was 100% fully charged, green LED and all. I unplugged it. At 7:48pm with "normal" use it was down to 54%. I noticed that it was losing about 1% per 15 minutes of standby with screen off. That seems kinda high, I don't think my iPhone drained that fast. Mind you it didn't have a kick ass screen like this One X does.
Oh. You're going to have to install a new Rom to improve battery life. I suggest CleanROM 4.2se since you're new to android and It's very close to stock, but optimized to hell.
There are many stickied topics (guides) that will show you how to get started.

In my experience, it really depends on the live wallaper. The bubbles one seems to be fine on the battery, meaning it probably drains just a few more a day than normal. Others seem to really drain the beast.
Bubbles is the best stock live wallaper in my opinion.

Ya, I unlocked my boot loader, rooted my phone, and installed CleanROM 4.2 SE already. Seems to run fairly well, but none of the Multitasking MOD's seem to work.
Maybe now that the Kernel source has been released some stuff will come along that will allow for better multitasking.

I agree with all this. I've never had an issue with stock live wallpapers affecting battery life on my old HTC phone (Desire Z). I suspect some poorly coded live wallpapers on the Market are the battery drain culprits, and give live wallpapers a bad rap.
I also agree that Bubbles is a cool LWP! I've been rocking it most the time since I've had my One X!
Having brightness on "auto" is probably going to drain a heckuvalot more battery than the LWP will. Go from that to 40-50%, and you will probably increase your battery life by 30%.
Please keep all question related threads in the Q&A section. Thank you.

I have bunch of pretty lively live wallpapers, and as far as I can tell, they're not affecting my battery life.
So I tried one day with, and one day without a live wallpaper and didn't notice a significant difference. The only live wall paper I use is Bubbles.
However I have another issue I'm going to create a new thread for regarding battery drain over night while doing nothing.
