i know theres a big difference between AMOLED and super LCD, but if there a way to switch to this mode to save battery i would use it all the time.
Someone mentioned that blacks use less power on the captivate screen. Is this true?
Black does use less battery, as it basically turns those pixels off, and the displace does use most of the battery life.
I personally have had ever increasing battery life, and I have never had trouble getting a full 24 hours. Be sure to run down the batter to 0% and charge up without it being powered on. Continue to experiment and it will more than likely improve over time.

I'm not quite sure why you're mentioned super LCD. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Nexus One has an AMOLED screen. We have Super AMOLED screens on the Captivate. Of the COLORS, yes red drains battery the least (it's also the one that affects your night vision the least, bonus trivia). But black drains even less, since, with SAMOLED, it just means the pixels are "off"
If you want to save battery life, make your background all black and hit the sleep button every time you set your phone down.
Disable GPS off you dont need it.
Turn off Wifi off you dont need it.
Turn the auto brightness adjust off. Control it manually.
Keep track of running background programs.
Dont use live wall paper or bright colored backgrounds. just use the plain black.

Just flash your phone to the JH2 firmware!! I used to get 9 to 10 hours max out of this battery, now it lasts so much longer with a good amount of use. Last night it went almost 17 hours before I charged it and it still had like 3% left.

The JH2 firmware makes your screen consume less battery because the auto adjust brightness is lower than before.

Sorry meant to write super AMOLED. I have been using a all black background and put the brightness all the way down. I would just like to have the red pixel option. I would like to switch to that to squeeze out more battery like in times when i really could care less how my display looks. And having a black background wont matter when im pulling up stuff that has colors in it and you cant see the background. im probably being nuts and for 90% of people this is going overboard, but id like to at least have the option.

I love you, this is friggin awesome.
I've been on JH2, im thinkin about giving bugless beast a try.
So no chance of having this feature on the captivate? (the red pixels)
and also just to make sure the pixels are "off" i just made an all black background in paint. Is there a big difference if i switch to one of the stock wallpapers that is mostly black? Or is all black a lot better?
in case anyone wants it, this is a wallpaper i've been using, i borrowed from someone on the MT3G forum almost a year ago, he put it up for others for this very reason - power savings with some visual whatever you want to call it

You only need to let the battery run down to zero once (maybe twice) to help calibrate the battery sensor (some people do not even believe it needs to be done once). Anyway, if you do it to much then it could lessen the lifespan of your battery because long charges heat the battery more, and heat powns the **** outta li-ion batterys.

got a question about that background and others like it.. I know black is supposed to use none, and red uses less, but wouldn't total black use MUCH less power than a shade lighter?
For example: a screen that is completely black is almost the same as the phone screen being off, as opposed to a slightly lighter screen which every pixel is turned on.
Right now my home screen has no icons on it and i have a completely black background. Am i going overboard? lol
Lithium Ion batteries will degrade much faster when deep discharged. Its a non reversable chemical reaction. That being said; the more often you charge and the less you let the battery drain down the better battery life you will have in the future.

um i been running pandora with the screen on and the brightness all the way up for about 5 hours in an effort to run my battery to zero (once)
should i stop now? im at 7%
I have let mine run down to 0% about 3 times. It always says I have over 20% after plugging it in for very little time. Kinda annoying.

Whenever I get a new device, or replace a battery, I always do at least 3 to 5 full power cycles to set the gague and burn in the battery. After that, it is best if you can keep it above 20%, but with smartphones and their owners being what they are these days, that can be next to impossible. Just do the initial drain and charge a couple times and then keep it charged when you can and try not to worry too much about the battery life. Most likely, you'll still have 80% when it's time to switch phones. Or you can buy a replacement fairly cheap. Heck, Samsung is directly selling a replacement batter with a desk charger for about $50. I'm sure you could find a cheaper battery by itself somewhere.

Also, ive found that when i lower the brightness to the lowest setting it somehow creeps back up a bit. Is there a way to disable the swipe feature to control brightness? i think i must be changing the brightness when i pull the bar down or something.

Wouldn;t that mean to get any function from your phone, you have to go to a different screen? Might as well take function, over a probably minor gain in battery life.
So I made this thread in the international forum by mistake so I figured id just make a separate one in the US forum

So I guess my main question is, is there currently anyone that runs their phone on full brightness? If so what kind of battery time are you getting on average along with screen on time?

I use a brightness widget and keep it at 25% most of the time. Lasts almost all day if I am not playing games.
Outside and when showing it off 100%.
At night (when the wife is sleeping) 0% is too bright. That's my only complaint.

I don't know how you can stand looking at the screen on full brightness. For me, even back to my Fascinate, the SAMOLED(+)(HD) screens have been painfully bright (I get haloing on the white areas in particular) at 100%.
Also: SAMOLED(+)(HD) screens are artificially limited to 200nits to preserve the tiny little LEDs that make up the screen. They're actually capable of MUCH brighter, but that drastically reduces their lifetime/consistency.

i made a tasker task, that chages brightness to my needs.
typically if im plugged in (AC or USB) its full bright & never turns off....great stuff
You must have a setting or something else going on, since it is plenty bright even at 50% and silly bright at 100%.
The first demo at a local VZW had a brightness issue as well, but they corrected it, or replaced it. Can't remember. Even at 100%, it was too dim.

I don't ever remember reading anything about "tiny little LEDs" in my research of AMOLED technology. It is exactly what the name states, an "Active Matrix" of "Organic" compounds that respond to electrical impulses by emitting light. Sorry if I'm coming off like a **ck, not trying to, just sayin...

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. At what point is one element of an AMOLED screen NOT a "tiny little LED"? If you want to argue that we're not looking at discrete LEDs like you would find blinking away on the front of your computer, or even the indicator LED on the S3 and GNex, then yes, but you're pushing semantics much farther than the original point of my post, which was to note that the screen is kept at a maximum brightness that is much lower than the capabilities of the elements that make up the screen.
For all you guys who need the edge on battery, and dont need alot of screen brightness, like me, then try out this app on the play store called screen filter. (I am not affiliated with this in any way, I just like the way it works). What it does is apply a "film" over your screen going even lower than android screen brightness. Perfect for office setting (like me), at night when brightness is too much (laying in bed playing a game), or where bright lights might not be wanted (movie theater, work, etc...). I personally love it, I use it usually at 75% with the android brightness off, and everything is still visible, just that extra kick of brightness is gone. Sometimes I go down to 50%, but that gets me seeing my reflection just as well as the screen itself...
It also helps to keep out them creepers that try to look at your screen while sending private texts, pics, etc... Helps keep wandering eyes off of the fancy 4.8 super AMOLED display!
You can add widgets to custom brightness settings to suit yourself, I have 4 right on one of my screens that I use frequently!
I recommend this app to anyone and everyone!
It wont let me post links, but if you search "screen filter" it should be the first app. The logo has a white rectangle outlined in orange with a grey circle in the corner. Not too hard to find at all.
I'm almost positive that screen filter won't increase battery life. I think the phone basically "thinks" its still at a higher brightness than what you see, so it really doesn't improve battery life. I may be wrong though but I remember seeing that when I used it on my droid x.

OLED pixels produce their own light (that is, without a separate backlight). Colors are made darker by dimming pixels. If the app makes what's being displayed on the screen darker, it should be helping battery life. The same reasoning applies to saving juice with dark backgrounds and inverted apps. It just only works on OLED screens and not backlit screen types.
Okay. I wasn't sure if I remembered correctly. Thanks!

Lux Auto Brightness works a little better, in my opinion. It can go less than the screen's brightness without the filter look.
Hi guys,
A friends uses auto brightness, and only speaks ~ 20 minutes / day. A few browsing, reading e-mails, games, just got him at 2 days of usage. Not bad in my oppinion, but certainly they should have improved the battery.
To me it seems like the battery life is longer. My first week of use around 9 or so it would be in the red, but using it throughout the day, at 9 tonight it sits at 37%. Yes it will vary depending on use, but mine has been on battery 15h 30m and screen is only 18%. Cell standby is 30%, and chrome and facebook are each 11%. Everything else is quite small compared to those main apps used.
It seems to me it is helping, but it may not idk. I will continue to use it unless I run into a major issue with it.

I would be happy to get 2 days of usage... I probably could get 1 and a quarter, but I charge mine every night to be safe. Really varies on how much I use it during the day. Some nights I plug it in with 10% others with 50%... I know its not the best for the battery, but I just plan on getting a new one when this one takes a crap. I have a feeling this phone will be around long enough that the option will still be available

What I would like is for my battery to last just *ONE* day. It doesn't do that. I don't mind charging it every night, but I'd prefer it last the day without me having to either charge it or switch batteries.

nice find
nice find on this. i use inverted apps, and i like the way this works
In my 8 hour day, I really only physically use my phone maybe 2-3 hours total.
I'll send a text, be at 90%, leave in pocket for 2 hours, and all of a sudden 79%. Urg!! I understand it's essentially inevitable, but can it be improved?
Sure, there are several obvious things;
-Turn Data/Wifi off during sleep
-Turn sync off
-Turn device... off!
But personally I prefer Data/Wifi on so my phone is always readily available if I need to do something fast! Turning it off would be even worse for me.. and I have sync slimmed down to almost nothing.
What else is there I can do?
--- If the answer is simply.. "nothing" that's fine, please let me know if that's the case ^_^
I've owned many Android devices and iPhones, sometimes both at the same time, and honestly, every iPhone I've had does an amazing job at reducing battery loss while the phone isn't in use.
If you've clicked this thread, please leave your opinion, whatever it may be! Thanks ^_^

Apart from the obvious (dimming your screen), you can decrease your screen's drain on your battery by using a "dark" theme as much as possible. Your Note 4 has an AMOLED screen, which is basically millions of tiny LEDs that make up the pixels. Unlike an LCD or TFT screen, which is back-lit regardless of color, AMOLED screens have the pixels individually lit as needed. So darker colors don't need as much energy, and black is basically "off".
Also, it sounds like maybe your screen is waking in your pocket because the power or home button keeps getting pressed. Perhaps try a different method of carrying it, or a (different) case or something.
Do you guys think it would be possible for the Honor 8 to be getting an Always On display feature? I know the Pixel 2 has it and I just think it would be neat if Huawei incorporated that feature on to the Honor 8, whether it'd be on the (hopefully) upcoming update or some other way. In my opinion I think it would be better to have that feature instead of having your phone turn on normally (with the background and everything) to every notification you get (assuming you have that turned on like I do), plus it saves some battery life in the long run. What do you guys think?

I think that it might eat more battery because honor 8 has lcd display and not amoled. Amoled display is only using battery on those pixels that are on, so blacks don't use any battery. Lcd display needs the whole display to be alight when its using even one pixel on the screen. I think that with lcd displays it's better to use the notification led which we already have.

Yea those apps drain the battery. I remember trying it out on my old Nexus 5. However having that feature already integrated into the system of the phone and having a separate app are 2 different things as having it integrated into the system allows it to be more optimized, meaning that it could minimally affect battery life unlike having a separate app.
I use an AOD along with macrodroid so it only comes on when charging. My phone sits on a dock next to my bed so it becomes a night clock with the brightness set to low. Works pretty neat actually, but wouldn't recommend it for normal use as it eats the battery
