Do you guys think it would be possible for the Honor 8 to be getting an Always On display feature? I know the Pixel 2 has it and I just think it would be neat if Huawei incorporated that feature on to the Honor 8, whether it'd be on the (hopefully) upcoming update or some other way. In my opinion I think it would be better to have that feature instead of having your phone turn on normally (with the background and everything) to every notification you get (assuming you have that turned on like I do), plus it saves some battery life in the long run. What do you guys think?

I think that it might eat more battery because honor 8 has lcd display and not amoled. Amoled display is only using battery on those pixels that are on, so blacks don't use any battery. Lcd display needs the whole display to be alight when its using even one pixel on the screen. I think that with lcd displays it's better to use the notification led which we already have.

True, I never actually thought of that. So does that mean the always on feature is only on AMOLED phones?
Lg g6 has always on feature even though it has an LCD panel

Im not saying that AOD would not work on LCD. There are some apps on google playstore that should do the trick. I dont know how well they work but you can try some. See if drain your battery.

Yea those apps drain the battery. I remember trying it out on my old Nexus 5. However having that feature already integrated into the system of the phone and having a separate app are 2 different things as having it integrated into the system allows it to be more optimized, meaning that it could minimally affect battery life unlike having a separate app.
I use an AOD along with macrodroid so it only comes on when charging. My phone sits on a dock next to my bed so it becomes a night clock with the brightness set to low. Works pretty neat actually, but wouldn't recommend it for normal use as it eats the battery

For all you guys who need the edge on battery, and dont need alot of screen brightness, like me, then try out this app on the play store called screen filter. (I am not affiliated with this in any way, I just like the way it works). What it does is apply a "film" over your screen going even lower than android screen brightness. Perfect for office setting (like me), at night when brightness is too much (laying in bed playing a game), or where bright lights might not be wanted (movie theater, work, etc...). I personally love it, I use it usually at 75% with the android brightness off, and everything is still visible, just that extra kick of brightness is gone. Sometimes I go down to 50%, but that gets me seeing my reflection just as well as the screen itself...
It also helps to keep out them creepers that try to look at your screen while sending private texts, pics, etc... Helps keep wandering eyes off of the fancy 4.8 super AMOLED display!
You can add widgets to custom brightness settings to suit yourself, I have 4 right on one of my screens that I use frequently!
I recommend this app to anyone and everyone!
It wont let me post links, but if you search "screen filter" it should be the first app. The logo has a white rectangle outlined in orange with a grey circle in the corner. Not too hard to find at all.
I'm almost positive that screen filter won't increase battery life. I think the phone basically "thinks" its still at a higher brightness than what you see, so it really doesn't improve battery life. I may be wrong though but I remember seeing that when I used it on my droid x.

OLED pixels produce their own light (that is, without a separate backlight). Colors are made darker by dimming pixels. If the app makes what's being displayed on the screen darker, it should be helping battery life. The same reasoning applies to saving juice with dark backgrounds and inverted apps. It just only works on OLED screens and not backlit screen types.

Lux Auto Brightness works a little better, in my opinion. It can go less than the screen's brightness without the filter look.

A friends uses auto brightness, and only speaks ~ 20 minutes / day. A few browsing, reading e-mails, games, just got him at 2 days of usage. Not bad in my oppinion, but certainly they should have improved the battery.
To me it seems like the battery life is longer. My first week of use around 9 or so it would be in the red, but using it throughout the day, at 9 tonight it sits at 37%. Yes it will vary depending on use, but mine has been on battery 15h 30m and screen is only 18%. Cell standby is 30%, and chrome and facebook are each 11%. Everything else is quite small compared to those main apps used.
It seems to me it is helping, but it may not idk. I will continue to use it unless I run into a major issue with it.

+1 to Lux. Set your own brightness levels for various light levels. It can make the brightness very low, almost not visible.

Anyone have some good values for the automatic brightness settings? I just want to go dimmer across the board compared to stock but I'm confused with all the options so far lol

I would be happy to get 2 days of usage... I probably could get 1 and a quarter, but I charge mine every night to be safe. Really varies on how much I use it during the day. Some nights I plug it in with 10% others with 50%... I know its not the best for the battery, but I just plan on getting a new one when this one takes a crap. I have a feeling this phone will be around long enough that the option will still be available

What I would like is for my battery to last just *ONE* day. It doesn't do that. I don't mind charging it every night, but I'd prefer it last the day without me having to either charge it or switch batteries.

The nexus 5 doesn't have a AMOLED screen, so Ambient Display is not supported. Catalcysm Rom added it also to the Nexus 5, but I wouldn't use that, since it worsens your battery live.
You need to download a app to make this possible, like Screen Notifications (from Luke Korth) or Ac Display (Artem Chepurnoy)

I am planning to buy one plus 7 Pro.. Had never previously bought one plus device only pixel and Samsung note. Only feature I am concerned is always on display. Is the feature present or only ambient display is there.. Also is there any way through magisk module or anything to get AOD..

No there is no always on display, only ambient display. There was a work around for the 6T but it had a lot of issues. I wouldn't buy it if that's a feature you just have to have.
Ambient only, no module as of now for native AoD, just apps in playstore
Try Always on Amoled from the playstore, pretty straightforward, been using it for a few days now.

Hasn't been too bad, couple extra % here or there but with the rapid charge on the phone I don't worry about it. I would say it's similar to my Note 9/S10 +.
Always on Amoled is what I use and I have zero issues with battery life or the app itself.
Always on amoled is great but breaks lift to wake for stock ambient display functionality. Need to tap the screen or press power to get the fingerprint scanner to appear for a scan. So close to being a perfect AOD solution for OP devices.
Most phone manufacturer such as Xiaomi, Samsung, Google, etc have their versions of AOD. Why do you think it's hard for OnePlus to implement it given the fact that it was available on previous phones such as the 5/5T.

What absolutely blows my mind is I can't have "tap once to show ambient display" and "double tap to wake phone" on at the same time. This was no problem on my S10+.
I personally dont care about it. BUT they would just give us the option to have it. If we want it and enable it and can live with the lesser battery than thats our decision. If I want better battery life then I disable it and use the normal ambient display.

I believe that's because of them being conflicting actions... I agree though, it would be extremely useful to have both
I don't think it's because of the battery. I think it's because their proximity sensor isnt working good enough or consumes too much power to make sure the aod doesn't activate in the pocket.
Although one could easily Dodge that by using the ambient light sensor to check for 0 lux. But maybe that one consumes too much too because of the under display tech.
Sometimes I think they are trying to avoid unwanted complaints. You see just because it may be a choice that the end user makes...they will still complain about the consequences. If they don't get at least a hundred hours of on screen time before the battery dies then it's the fault of the OEM for not providing better battery management...and yet at the same time they complain that RAM management is too aggressive in an effort to stretch battery time in general. Then, if by some chance they get screen burn due to AOD it will be the fault of the OEM again...even though the end user chose to turn on the feature....so the best way to avoid the whole issue is to not provide the option at all. Of course I could be all wrong and what the previous poster said is correct???
No always on display and horizon light that lights up once. How does oneplus expect us to be informed of a missed notification without interacting with the phone? Telepathy?
Does anyone know if it's possible to turn off the ambient display but leave on the tap and raise options? I'd like to tap to be able to see the lock screen, which actually has useful information rather than pointless icons. Oneplus' implementation of the ambient display is an enormous failure, including on the Beta Android 10 I'm running. I'll admit to my own fault, when browsing the specs on this phone I saw ambient display and just assumed it was a proper AOD, otherwise I never would have bought this notificationless brick of annoyance.

It's true that black screen pixels are totally off on AMOLED display. However, display driver and wherever else in connection to display will be using 200 to 300 mA even when all pixels are dead black, but phone/display turned on. Comparing to that, when display is white, it will consume 600 to 800mA. As a conclusion, constant drain of additional 250mA would result in a good hit on your battery life.
I think that the OP7P have some component that are easily overheated.
For me the power & volume buttons and the touch stop function whenever the cellular reception is poor, or when I tried to run 3rd party AOD.
Such phenomena happened with OP6 after long charge. So it seem to me that this phone is badly build or have problematic components and this prevent them implement AOD.
hey guy's its my first samsung and was wondering why AOD doesnt detect full darkness when autobrightness is on and doesnt go dark when in total darkness or in pocket etc.
Also if I dont enable edge lighting and get a notification therea no popup on the aod screen at all? no way to have it like aosp or pixel? Or the best would be for screen to wake when notification comes and then go dark leaving icon to show notification.
Last question, is there a way to make the edge lighting style toast notification bubble dark on dark more and not that white bubble? i cant get goodlock to work in my country evem with vpn install it says the modules arent for my phone.

lol i have a k20 Pro also and on miui the aod stays untill your in complete darkness, which is logical? miui has lockscreen wake when notification comes also like ios. Way better then edge bubble thing or not having any popup?
when the phone is on the desk i want to see who messaged and then decide to check or not.

I'm running Pie on a Note 10+ so it's they are two very different Android variants.
Controls may be hidden in settings or elsewhere.
I go looking through all the settings that I can find. Even after a year occasionally I find something new; lots of settings.

Back in the older days pre note 9 AOD actually turned off when you placed phone face down or if you used a wallet type holder or covered proximity sensor ( good ). Samsung then at some point changed their proximity sensor type whereby this feature would be no longer supported. I think the note 8 was the last samsung I owned that worked this way.
However I never recall it ever going completely dark / off even in a pitch dark room.

I agree. The feature was really beneficial especially for those that use wallet type cases. You open the cover and AOD activated regardless of it being a mom genuine case.
PS. I think the change actually came about after the note 9 series with their under the screen type proximity sensor implementation from s10 onwards.

With only a few OLEDs active their power drain is slight. Their mosfet drivers are very efficient.
The current used additional sensing of previous versions may have been more prohibitive than that of the active OLEDs.
I just leave mine on; turning off decreases off time battery consumption by 20% or so. Not as much as you think as other systems run regardless unless you power the phone off.

I'd vouch for your last paragraph. Screen off drain has become the achilles heel of the galaxy devices more so than before. I can't seem to get below at best 0.4% drain per hour if I'm lucky . I need to look into some of the methods you mentioned in this forum.

That's probably as good as it gets. Cell standby and device idle are needed otherwise simply power it down.
With AOD always on I figure 1% or less @ hr is good performance.
Tap on only improves it but I like stuff that glows.

on my k20pro i can get 0.4% and hour idle with aosp rom and like 8-11% active.
here i dont want to root so cant use franko manager to see or app with real data.
this white bubble with edge lighting notifications is annoyinf i cant make it dark??
o **** this app aodnotify does exactly what I want, gives an led circle and shows message preview
orr even better this glimpse app remplaces aod edge lighting with simple lockscreen wake then back to aod with app icon. On regular screen on edge behaviour is the same.
