Hey,
I am brand new to Android and my HTC One X. I just got it about a week and a half ago. I love the Bubbles live wallpaper, but I do have a concern about battery drain while having any live wallpaper active.
So my question is, does a live wallpaper have a significant hit on the battery?
I can get about 12 - 14 hours of "normal" use out of my One X with auto-brightness on, and in a mixed LTE / WiFi coverage. The phone is still new to me so I'm still tinkering and learning. Switched from an iPhone and love Android so far and the One X. I've noticed though that the screen is the biggest consumer of my battery. Usually around the 65% mark. While phone is 2nd and then various other things.
This was certainly true for older phones, like my HTC Aria. However, I didn't really notice that much of a battery hit with this phone. I used the bubbles wallpaper for the first week I had the phone too. I realized that the novelty went away after a while and now I use static pictures.
It could just be that the battery life is so good on this phone anyway that I didn't notice a hit. Either way, yes, it does use more battery. Whether that difference is negligible now, I'm not sure. If you like the wallpaper I suggest you use it.

I haven't really noticed it, but try it out for yourself and let us know how it went.
Hell, I'll test too.
EDIT: I underclock to 912 MHz most of the time btw. No lag so far.

I like the wallpaper, but I'm finding that the battery life kinda sucks. And I don't know if that's just because it's a new gadget and I'm playing with it a lot, or if there is something wrong and it's draining my battery quicker than normal. For example. At 12 noon it was 100% fully charged, green LED and all. I unplugged it. At 7:48pm with "normal" use it was down to 54%. I noticed that it was losing about 1% per 15 minutes of standby with screen off. That seems kinda high, I don't think my iPhone drained that fast. Mind you it didn't have a kick ass screen like this One X does.
Oh. You're going to have to install a new Rom to improve battery life. I suggest CleanROM 4.2se since you're new to android and It's very close to stock, but optimized to hell.
There are many stickied topics (guides) that will show you how to get started.

In my experience, it really depends on the live wallaper. The bubbles one seems to be fine on the battery, meaning it probably drains just a few more a day than normal. Others seem to really drain the beast.
Bubbles is the best stock live wallaper in my opinion.

Ya, I unlocked my boot loader, rooted my phone, and installed CleanROM 4.2 SE already. Seems to run fairly well, but none of the Multitasking MOD's seem to work.
Maybe now that the Kernel source has been released some stuff will come along that will allow for better multitasking.

I agree with all this. I've never had an issue with stock live wallpapers affecting battery life on my old HTC phone (Desire Z). I suspect some poorly coded live wallpapers on the Market are the battery drain culprits, and give live wallpapers a bad rap.
I also agree that Bubbles is a cool LWP! I've been rocking it most the time since I've had my One X!
Having brightness on "auto" is probably going to drain a heckuvalot more battery than the LWP will. Go from that to 40-50%, and you will probably increase your battery life by 30%.
Please keep all question related threads in the Q&A section. Thank you.

I have bunch of pretty lively live wallpapers, and as far as I can tell, they're not affecting my battery life.
So I tried one day with, and one day without a live wallpaper and didn't notice a significant difference. The only live wall paper I use is Bubbles.
However I have another issue I'm going to create a new thread for regarding battery drain over night while doing nothing.

With all the complaining about this phone flooding the forums, I thought I would post something positive that I found improves the phone. When I purchased this phone I knew nothing about it other then it had a nvidia dual core...I had to have it. 2 hours later while in the market it froze. Removed battery and never turned on again. So back to store to get another. :-( Needless to say phone has been fine since. However I had too had some of the ever popular issues. Decided to root it using one click root and installed nvflash. Backed up stock rom and flashed the gingerbread leaked rom. No more problems. I had a problem with the phone lagging bad while trying to type. Reinstalled Rom and ok now. I use antutu CPU master. I have setup the profiles to my like. I basically turned it down to 608mhz Max and while it is charging it is normal. Phone is not as snappy, but is still fast enough for normal use. This gave me a instant battery gain. Before I couldn't go more then 4 hours without a charger (pretty lame) now I have gone 12 hours of what I consider normal use. So...there is nothing more to complain about other then LG and Google need to get there sh__ together and give us some updates. Pretty bad when you have to do all this to get this phone to work.
Sick of heari.g about the sensation... i am thinking that before the g2x came out everyone thought it was going to solve the world. I think some people just need excuses to have the latest and greatest phones. Come on people the grass isn't always greener.

Not to rain on your parade, but I'd hardly call having to run a leaked buggy rom and then underclock your processor by about 40% just to get it to work properly positive news. That's just more information that confirms how substantial the current problems are. To underclock your phone almost 40% pretty much defeats the purpose of having a dual core phone. If you're going to do that you might as well have gotten a G2 or Nexus S or something. Also to have done all that and have still only gotten 12 hours of battery life isn't really that impressive. I'm not trying to be controversial, I'm just offering a bit of perspective. To lose almost half of your processing power just to match the battery life that other phones (ex. Sensation) can get out of the box using the full processor is definitely not a positive. Quite frankly I find that to be quite the opposite...meaning it's very negative. The grass may not always be greener on the other side, but at least for me, in my opinion...after having tried both sides of the grass..it's definitely greener. While that may change in the future after the cure-all update (the one everyone is praying actually fixes the phone), as of right now the reality of the situation is the G2X needs fixing before its ready for prime time. Until then it's just merely a phone with potential.

so very eloquently put...well I'll play along...then I guess that makes the G2X schizophrenic then huh? lol Nah but seriously though I'm not trying to hijack his thread into a "phone a is better than phone b" thread. My thing was I'm just pointing out that his "positive news", really isn't a positive at all..and quite frankly I find it to be an indictment of the device more than anything. So though his intent may have been positive news, it really delivered negative news.
+1.

There are no greatest and latest fone. Sensation will have its own problems. My g2x with EB1.04 GB, together with setcpu runs flawless, not a single problem. Thanks to the EB developer(s).
I unplug my phone at 8am and throw it on the charger at midnight. I use it pretty heavily throughout the day. I'm always sending corporate exchange emails, personal emails, SMS, twitter news links, and facebook.. along with wordfeud and kingdoms live a few times a day plus whatever game I find throughout the day.
Pretty happy with battery life. I'm running CM7 and stock kernel. Custom Kernels OC/UV typically have much better battery life. I also don't use SetCPU or anything special. Just stock CM7.
I've only had the G2X for a few days, but so far I've had no problems whatsoever. I checked for the backlight bleeding and luckily my phone doesn't have that issue. Everything else is working great and the phone is amazingly fast. If it helps the date on the box is 5/09/11

If you download SetCPU or something else that can underclock with profiles, set it so it underclocks to the minimum when the screen is off. Your battery life will go through the roof.
I can go an entire day without a charge.
Something is wrong if you're only getting 4 hours at stock clocks.
Try using the battery calibration app, and then if you can swing the ~$3, get JuiceDefender.

You know your right. I am highly pissed with T-Mobile for not doing a _____ thing about this pos. It is ashame, because I swapped the galaxy s for this one. I have had many android phones and this is by far the worse case I've had. Really just trying to be patient and hope the update will solve issues. I wanted to post something that would possibly help someone else till this infamous update is released. In the phones defense, it is running two 1 gig cores, pretty impressive. There is no battery technology that would allow the capacity needed for this phone and maintain the slim form factor. I can understand that to a degree. I have seen the big battery for this phone and plan on purchasing it. I actually will like the fact that I'll have something to hold on too. My other point was "the latest and greatest phone" is not always the solution. On another note, T-Mobile has absolutely the worse customer service! Very displeased that I am going to be supporting them for 1yr and 11 months yet!

So, one thing I've noticed when running through the various ICS ROMs and kernels is that regardless of rom or kernel, Android OS eats up battery at an alarming rate.
In my experience, it usually is eating more power than the screen, which just aint right. Now, I know these ROMs are at an early stage, but this is a common thing between all of them. I've noticed a few others noting it, but I think most are too excited about the new OS to notice the batt life.
Has anyone narrowed down what's going on? I'm curious....
**NOTICE TO FLAMERS**: This is not a post passing judgment on ICS. I'm simply asking if anyone's figured out what the issue is currently, or if anyone has solved it.

Don't form an opinion of ICS until you actually run an official rom, and not something someone hacked together from AOSP release from a different phone, and leaked dev binaries.
I see this happen too, on the rom i am running. but won't form an opinion until there are proper roms out.

Jesus christ, I didnt form an opinion of ICS. You need to chill dude. Re-read my post. My post was an inquisitive one, because I recognize that it is some sort of bug or anomaly in EARLY CUSTOM BUILDS, as can be seen when I said "Has anyone narrowed down what's going on? I'm curious...."
There was no need for that....
it doesnt necessarily mean that the android os is using more battery. you can also look at it a different way.. maybe the screen is taking less battery. if the android os uses the same amount of power as always, but the screen uses less, the % battery used is going to go up for android os.
Yeah, but the likelihood of a hardware item suddenly using less power than it used to is certainly way less likely than an OS, software-level item.
I understand your theory on percentages, but as I'm sure you've noticed simms, something's draining the batt quickly, even on UV kernels, and I'm willing to bet it's OS related, and probably related to Android OS (in batt usage). I doubt this is the type of batt life we can expect with the official OTA, so I'm thinking something's running amuck.
My screen used 26%, while Android OS used 39%. In the past w/GB roms, it would have been more like screen 45%, Android OS 11-15%.

im just playing devils advocate, to try and see it from a different point of view. right now my screen is at 43% and android os is at 35%. normally my screen is around 51-57% and android os is around 7-11%. mind you, i am tethering at the moment also. but, the screen % is below what it normally is and the android os is much higher than it usually is. so something is definitely going on.
btw, in on the seuv kernel, and its doing alright on battery for me.
i am usingkoush v11 with Franco 26/11 kernel. Off charge at 9.30 am at 98%...5.30 pm 89%...very little usage today..just a couple of emails..but easily getting 15+ hours of battery life with WiFi my main usage including phone calls over WiFi.
My phone is turned on for 17 hours 38 minutes and still has 24% battery with brainmaster v5 + franco kernel
I've noticed this, too.
Last BM version drained my battery massively over night while being in flight mode.
Android OS took 87% of the battery in 8 hours.
So it's definitely a bug.
CM9 Alpha 11 is way better. In 18h 36m Android os 25%, android system 17% Display 15%.
Even though i appreciate the work the devs who are coming up with these ICS roms are doing, i can't use any of them as daily drivers (no flash/Google calender sync issues/performance is noticeably slow e.t.c). Played with Koush's version the other day and was mighty impressed, very. I'm still not sold on the whole ICS look in general, might take a while to get used to it. Seems too fluffy to me, too much eye candy. Battery life wasn't the best, but manageable.
Right now i'm on Oxygen+Carbon rom mix with Franco kernel, and OMG this combo is phenomenal regarding performance and battery life..
my battery life is the same, if not a tad better.. using kwiboos v2.

With all due respect, "Don't form an opinion of ICS until you actually run an official rom " is not a statement of fact, it is your opinion/emotional response based upon you misunderstanding of my post. I clearly acknowledged that we were working with early builds, so this is obviously not what the final product should be.
The purpose of this general forum is to have general discussions, and troubleshooting posts. I made a troubleshooting post, seeking out others experiencing the same thing, in an attempt to solve the issue, or see if the culprit has been found.
I will admit that I overreacted a bit, but I think you did the same.

I'm curious: check your batt usage. Do you see Android OS almost equal, if not higher in batt usage than the screen?
Now remember, on phones, the screen is the biggest power drain for anyone other than a light user (never turns on screen, makes 1 call a day, etc). Typically, in my usage (usually 25-30% brightness), the screen takes anywhere from 40-50% of my batt life thru the day, with Android OS way down the list. That was Gingerbread.
Android OS 38%
Display 29% (brightness at 12%)
Miren Browser 17%
Cell Standby 9%
74% remaining
8hrs 44min on battery
Sorry, my native screen cap won't save to disk, otherwise I'd upload it.

Yeah, I figured it'd be way up there. Now, I'm not saying batt life is BAD. I still can get a good 15-20h out of it if I dont use it much. But I'm used to going 24-36 hrs without having to charge, all with medium usage. I've tried various UV kernels to achieve this again, but Android OS is dominating the battery.
My battery is actually good. I am on cm9 alpha 11 on franciscofranco's kernel. It lasted more than 24 hours on medium use.
more than 24 hours is already good for a smartphone.

yep. My first impressions for it were the same, too much eye candy and too much things going on the screen. Maybe I was just used to the very simple and minimalistic UI of the stock gingerbread. But after using it for a day.I am beginning to realize how amazing and beautiful ICS is.
Yes Android OS is top for me at 45% and on GB ROM it was 4-5%. Batt life ain't too bad but I think the Android OS usage is just something that will get sorted as the development moves forward, especially after the official update drops.

I was wondering what kind of battery life everyone is getting. I am down to 35 percent and I have only been off the charger for 6 hours. I sent maybe 10 texts checked facebook twice and played cut the rope for 10 minutes.
I unlocked the phone using ACE hack kit and I am not running the CM nightly that I found here: http://iloveabath.co.uk/CM7-Unofficial/ plus the inspiremod 5.0 patch. Also I cant figure out how to get to fastboot to figure out what radio I am running. Im running on T-Mobile in the DC area. I just got the Inspire so any tips and tricks I might not know about would be great.
Thanks!
For starters HTC ace phones don't have the best battery life to begin with because of the sync functions. Cm7 is a great rom but it only adds to the battery issue.
There are serveral apps, flashes and mods to the boot.prop file thar will help extend battery life. Do some leg work and Use the search to find these. I suggest googleing calibrate battery and battery drain on htc inspire/dhd. This issue has been covered repeatedly. And the mods and users don't care for the clutter of repeat posts
Last suggestion. Use the notification bar to turn off functions when you don't use them. Ie.... wifi, Bluetooth, GPS and turn your screen brightness down.
Also unsync Facebook, Google + and drop your email retreave function down from every 15min to several hours or not at all. (You can still get email this way by opening app)
This is about all the advise I can give you the rest is up to you and doing some reading.
I did all of these and I get about 14 hours of heavy ussage.
As far as finding your radio. Download and open this app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=608910&d=1306506748

Your battery definitely shouldn't be draining like that with that amount of use. Maybe try one of the current tracking apps to see what's using all your power.
Battery life depends largely on how you use it. Screen on uses about 80% of your battery. The more time it sits idle, the longer it goes on battery. I can get a whole day out of mine on a typical day with about 2 hours talking and a little fiddling with the phone. I also use wi-fi whenever possible because the wi-fi radio uses less power than the cellular data connection. If you're running dead after 6 hours I am willing to bet you are spending a lot of time using the phone. Try setting the brightness on the screen dimmer.

Huh? They are both Ace. Stallion? Where did you dream that one up?
Edit: I'll be damned. Well get the harness on this Stallion and ride. Credit goes to you Teichopsia.
Wow. According to the internetz, Stallion is indeed the code name for the Ace variant carried by At&T. So yes it is a Stallion, but it is also an Ace.

My biggest problem is that I want to use my phone without worrying about the
battery going dead, when I mean use my phone, I am talking about games, Internet,
and watching videos, stuff that requires the screen, the problem is that I cant use
the phone like that, at best with the screen on 100% of the time you might get 3 to 4
hours of battery life before the phone is dead, just using it as a phone the battery life
is enough, but if I just wanted a phone, I would have got something cheaper, there are a
few ways to deal with this, the same ways that I used when dealing with PDAs
in the past, -BTW PDAs had about the same battery life as this phone,- I had to
keep mutable chargers handy, one in my my car, one in the house, one in my travel
bag, and keep external battery packs to charge the PDA, I hate to do that, it seems
silly, even more so when the battery life is no better then way back in the early
2000s.
People have to start looking at today's smartphones as "pocket laptops". I've been saying this for a while. Battery size and capacity go hand in hand. You can't have a thin, light mini-computer and expect it to last for days on one charge like the old phones. There are many options to be sure you don't run out of power. Powerskin, seperate power pack, extra chargers for wherever you spend your time, extra batteries. There's not really any other way around it if you really use it a lot.
Battery life threads have been done to death. We all know the battery life is what it is. It will work for a real days worth of use for the average business user but for the kids playing games and watching movies well then it will only last a few hours.
Best advice is keep a charger handy
Well I am going back to stock for good (atleast for now). I have been with android for about two months coming from 3 years of iphone. I didnt mind the iphone, but wanted to be able to do some customization to it.
I have played the ROM swapping game since day 4 of having the android. Tried several versions from 4.04 to superlite gingerbreads. The thing is, people always say they get better battery life etc etc... but I have yet to see it.
I keep data, wifi, GPS off when not in use and all notifications off. I love the android dont get me wrong, but when it comes to battery life, the iphone kills this phone. But, in defense of the skyrocket, it has a much bigger screen which I am sure contributes to large battery uses. I have found that the stock version tends to give me better battery life.. so stock it is for me.
I don't really see the additional benefits that custom roms offer over stock for the battery life, despite how often the developers update their custom roms and peddle that they save battery. But the additional features that come with custom roms are indeed nice.
Still, should outlast the iPhone 4S any day. I get over a day's worth sometimes if I'm not doing heavy usage.
If you haven't tried MHX's Superlite 3.1, I recommend it. Using it on GB, I got fantastic battery life.
But understand this, ROMs do have only minimal effects on battery life, the level of debloating being the big thing. Kernels will have a bigger effect when used correctly with good CPU management.
But the biggest effect on battery life is you and the apps you install. You need to watch like a hawk with BetteryBatteryStats and CPU Spy to see what's really going on. See what apps are killing your battery and why. Eliminate the problems and you will be set.

I can get outstanding battery life with the stock rom and exceptional life with a custom rom with wifi on GPS on Ect.... I never seem to have a problem.

Yea... it's like im sorry you couldnt figure out whats eating your battery... but do you really think everyone on here just uses custom roms regardless of horrible battery?
OP, your aruguments might apply for the iphone 4, but no way it does for the 4S. This would be like comparing the original galaxy s. The 727 is a powerful phone and lte is a *****. When i'm on Wifi, i can easily have a 30h battery life, but as soon as i'm on 4G or Lte, battery life is a *****. Its life and until they make some kind of super capacity compact battery, it will be the reality of a decent smartphone.
On the other side, i also reverted from ICS leaked roms to stock GB, unfortunately, stock has always been the best choice for me, much stabler than any rom

Yo try faux kernel with stock gingerbread and if you don't get better battery life then somethings wrong with your phone. I've gotten up to 4 hours screen time on with it. I also froze a bunch of bloatware.
Dude again my aokp I had over 8 hrs screen on

You guys just don't know how to make the proper tweaks to save battery, that's all. It's just lack of knowledge, you'll get the hang of it eventually.

And you felt the need to post this why?
so as it may be known, i came from an iPhone 4S and traded that for an HTC One X, i've had it for a little over a week and i really like it a lot BUT (you knew that was coming i think..) the battery is below par, i get about 3, on a real good day 4 hours of usage from a full charge. i only auto sync mail, screen is on 25% (also tried auto for a few days), when at home it's connected to WiFi, data off and when i go out the other way around, GPS and Bluetooth are off at all times. the main thing i do on my device is Twitter, Google+, Facebook and Instagram, + some light browsing the Internet. i understand the screen and processor take quite some battery but it's not cool to only be able to use the device about 3-4 hours before running empty. emailed the guy i traded with and he said he got about 7hrs, which would be awesome after dealing with 3-4 ;}
i am using Nova Launcher Prime, but prior to that when i ran Sense the battery was about the same. may just revert to stock to see how that will affect the battery, even though i will miss my widgets and setup. i also emailed HTC and was considering going to AT&T but since i traded the device i doubt they'll be much help.
what do you guys get... and what if anything did you do to improve it ?
thanks.
How much screen on time? 4 hours is nuts. I easily got 24 hours on stock, with light usage, maybe even a day and a half. The 2.2X versions firmwares seem to get better battery life. Just this morning I had just under 50% battery left after 24 hours, with 1 hour screen on time.
If screen brightness in on "Auto" turn that off, and set it to something like 40-50%. That should save you some, but doesn't account the type of battery drain you are talking about.
Might be some runaway processes. Or any possibility you are in a fringe LTE area?
on screen time is what i was reporting, round about 4 hours -which yea is pretty horrible i'd say. i even have the screen brightness lower; 25%. checked the processes and for what i know nothing out of the ordinary, but i'm a novice Android user so.. prior to yesterday i only used 4G when out, so at home i stayed on WiFi.
battery stats now:
- 76%
- 5h 8m 54s on battery
- screen on 59m 28s
Screen on time of 4 hours very normal, and its good for a smartphone. Everyone uses their phone differently, of course. But 4 hours of screen time gets most people through a day, and charge overnight. What type of screen on time did you get with the iPhone?

Your stats are very normal for this phone model. The One XL screen is gigantic, but isn't AMOLED and as such uses much more battery life to power than some other Android devices. I get ~3 hours of screen on time in a days use of battery, and that is about 10-15 hours away from a charger. From what I can gather of your usage, if you are looking to extend your battery life, the only thing to do is leave the screen off more.
Do you flash custom ROMs? If so, try a custom kernel that allows you to change the CPU governor and clock speeds. The processor in the One XL maxes out at 1.5GHz by default, but you can underclock it to 1.2GHz with no noticeable detriment to performance. Also you can set the minimum frequency to an even lower clock speed, which allows the phone to use even less power when idling. Finally, make sure that the CPU governor is set to Ondemand. Powersave actually doesn't save as much power as you would think!
my favorite part was when he compared a tiny 3.5" screen to a 4.7" screen and expected the same battery life, even though it is roughly the same
Firstly, 4 hours screen on time isn't bad at all. I'm sorry your only reference is an iPhone.
To get 6+ hours of onscreen time with this phone like I and many others get you will need to do two things. Firstly, flash a custom ROM. CleanROM 4.5 is a good one that's as close to stock as you're gonna get. The second thing you need to do is turn off auto brightness. Leave the brightness set at 35% - 40%. This will improve battery life immensely. And no, 40% brightness is not dim.
Happy flashing!
10-12 hours up
5hrs 15mins screen on
Everything synced

with my iPhone (GPS on always, WiFi always, screen on about 70-80%) i got an average of 6 hours with peaks of 7. 4 hours with the HTC One X is on a good day.
i did not flash a ROM since i can not unlock the phone (yet). where i compared, referred to the iPhone is based upon the previous owner who said he usually got 6-7 hours on screen per day. it's uncool that people not live by the rule if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say nothing... i'm only trying to get some help here (luckily most members are helpful... i'll try and ignore the others) and my other reference would be a BB Storm, which lasted very long, but the device wasn't very exciting
i'm following the thread where rooting is discussed but i believe there's little progress. AT&T is also not pushing Sense 4.1 (yet, mine has 4.0) and ICS 4.0.4.
just spoke with HTC and they agree it's too short and are willing to exchange battery... downside i would be w/o a phone for 7-10 business days. might swing by AT&T and discuss, "issue" is i was not the original buyer.. he (HTC rep) stated they might give you a loaner (i doubt it..) we shall see.
thanks to those with positive feedback.
so far..
click here for today's results --16% left.. slightly over 3hr on screen time.

It really depends on how you use your phone, and not all screen-on time is the same. 4 Hours is screen time is pretty good, and pretty on par with what other users on here have observed. The phone is new to you, so I bet you are using it like crazy. If that use includes a lot of internet, playing video, or games, its going to use more battery than some other activities. I don't know if a replacment is going to make you any happier.
You also have to consider, aside from a much larger screen, its also much higher resolution than the iPhone. Pushing all those pixels by the GPU takes power. The CPU is also much faster than the iPhone (and just about any other smartphone except the Galaxy S3), again using more power. Screen time may be less, but its doing so much more in that time.
4 hours, if I made would be somewhat acceptable, yesterday I had a little more then 3. I do not play game, I manly do social media & a little surfing..

The 2.20 OTA has an new radio. So its possible that the new radio happens to result in worse reception (and therefore battery life) than the previous one. Newer radios do not always get better results for all people, as its very geographically dependent.

Thank you for the reply and yes the radio looked like it was a new one and in PA i dont get that great of service everywhere.
Yeah, 4 hours of screen on time is normal so I definitely don't think you have any sort of defect. Signal strength also has a lot of impact on battery life. Keep brightness as low as possible while still being comfortable to your eyes (battery life isn't worth putting extra strain on your eyes). I use an app called display brightness that allows you to change brightness by swiping across the statusbar. I keep mine at the lowest level and just swipe a bit to increase it when I need it and then swipe it back down when I'm done. A custom rom could help some. If nothing else, root so that you can use something like better battery stats to give you more info on what's happening behind the scenes so you can make some adjustments. Although I'm not one to push using this, you might want to install something like juice defender to see if it helps. Verify you don't have some app running in the background unnecessarily chewing up cpu use. Note though that just because an app is running in the background doesn't mean you should kill it. As long as it's not doing anything, it's better for it to be running than to have to load it up (especially if it's an app you use frequently). A couple of other things to verify, don't use push notifications / syncing (I keep background syncing off a manually sync (well, I use Tasker to sync things at different times of the day)). If you can, use wifi. If wifi isn't available, turn it off. Also make sure wifi notifications are off and that you aren't using 'best wifi performance' (both under wifi advanced settings).
I'm sure there are some others I missed but hopefully these help and at least give you a starting place. No matter what though, enjoy your device and don't obsess too much with the battery. Once you've gotten over the 'new toy' syndrome, you should get a days use out of it. I pretty much take mine off charge in the morning and put it on charge before going to bed with around 30‰ left. Sometimes more, sometimes less. 3-4 hours average of screen on time, 30-60 minutes of calling.

update.
went to the AT&T Device Center (did not know it existed until the regular AT&T store told me about it...) they played with my phone and concluded that the battery was draining too fast while using it, so w/o discussion they exchanged it.
got a follow up question since AT&T did not know, with the iPhones i would let them drain all the way down at least and then fully recharge and leave it on the charger for an extra 2 hours after it being 100%, i *think* that helped condition the battery.. anything you guys can suggest anything for me to to now that i have a new device to maybe improve/condition the battery ?
thanks.
