Gingerbread so far...

So from a GR-12 standpoint I must say gingerbread handles just about everything better. with the random odd bugs here and there... so far gingerbread is already showing some awesome stability and speed. much kudos out to the devs here! You guys do a great job and from what I've seen here so far... you put up with maybe one too many ignorant rude individuals. BUT! I would like to extend my thanks to all you devs and helpful members here... and for making my switch to android not only an informative one but a great experience all together.
So... anyway. loving gingerbread (GR-12 mainly). After loading up launcher pro almost every single bug or issue has vanished. seems the twlauncher has some deep seated issues lol.
Looking forward to the new releases!

A different launchere makes all the difference doesn't it!? After I realized that every time I had a snag or crash it was "twlauncher"... I figured I'd try replacing it. and sure nuff... Awesomeness came spilling forth. Honestly haven't had a issue since. (well I flashed the kc1 modem which gives me the gps performance I need... ).
Outside of my own retarded moment bricking my phone while flashing it... Tearing through 3 old power supplies to get the right combo of resistors to build my own jig.... lol! But all is well that ends well.
What's everyone else's setup / experience with ginger on their cappy's?

Does GPS work on your Gingerbread ROMs? I know the Vibrant it doesn't and I am on ATT, so I am looking to trade for a captivate if it does.

worked for me. I was able to pick up a signal within 30 seconds and hold it for almost the whole way to my destination. Not amazing but I've accepted that, now - lol

significantly better than froyo (at least for me). There are some people with a battery drain issue but I'm thinking its an app thats not optimized for GB. I dont think its a ROM or KERNEL issue - but I'm not a dev so I can't back my statements up.

Both battery and gps are better on GB. Gps is wayyy better...

Gingerbread has been horribly buggy. The battery life is just plain awful, it's laggier than 2.1, and it killed my dog.
Someone was bound to say something negative, so I just got that out of the way. Lol
Actually, GR-12 makes my Captivate run as smooth as my Inspire. I got about 12 hours heavy usage with the screen almost max.

that's a loaded question because it depends on MANY factors:
-signal strength in your area
-3g vs wifi connection
-general phone use (phone calls, sms, games, etc...)
For me, the phone lasts MUCH longer. I can go about 20-24 hours until I need to charge again. Thats with medium use and wifi connection 80% of the day. On standby, my phone usually drains 1% - 2% an hour.

EDIT: I should add, though, that when I'm not on wifi (using 3G), my battery doesnt last as long. So I prefer to be on wifi as much as I can.

That is good to know. I will keep that in mind.

So far on continuum its been rather smooth, using go launcher btw.
Battery life is bad though. Less than 8hrs with moderate to heavy usage. I need to fully recharge two to three times a day now.
On froyo I'd get 12-15 hours with similar usage.
Gps works fine, but then mine did on froyo before.

I'm experiencing battery drain, GR, Continuum and Mosaic, I leave wifi on and after 9 hours (fully charged, battery stats reset, standby mode [literally 0 use, I was asleep]), cell standby had used 33%, wifi 30%, .... I had 52% battery left.
GB is smoother, for sure, once kernel development ramps up for GB (JVB, JVH and JVO, ... JV#) i'd expect to see more tweaks include power and performance.
If you need battery life and don't want to risk flashing GB, wait.

battery life *IS* going to depends heavily on how much you use your phone. It's hard to compare battery life amongst people that cannot stand next to each other and compare phones because describing "heavy" use is different for everyone. My version of heavy is not the same as the next person.
the only real determinant of battery life that we can all use as a comparison is to see how much battery drain you have on standby or to run some sort of application that runs videos (ie. benchmark apps) because we can all do that. If your phone drains 2x as fast as mine on standby, then we have a problem with a rogue app or something else.
(clarification: I dont mean to use a benchmark app to see the results of the app itself. I just mean to run something on the phone to drain the battery quicker and view the battery life at the end of the test).

I've always experienced better battery life with Froyo, and I use my phone every single day for reading PDF's, listening to music, texting, calling and surfing the web. Maybe Gingerbread has better standby battery life, but when getting a "full" use out of my phone I've always lasted longer on Froyo builds.

[Q] GB installed on my G2X, so when does the cool stuff happen?

Ok so GB is up and running since yesterday at about 5:30pm.
The phone seems snappier and quicker and has a different look to it, but the one thing I was hoping for was better battery life and it seems the same if worse.
I have had any reboots yet, but I'm not willing to say that the issue has been fixed because I don't get them everyday.
If this isn't the official TMO/LG fix, do you guys think there is still a chance they will address battery life because they didn't do anything IMO.

I think you may be right. I just noticed that TeleNav was stuck in a continuous restart. I never even opened that POS software. Cannot wait to root with SuperOneClick.

Yeah android as a whole OS needs to release a major update concerning battery life, its easier said than done though the hardware is different on every phone.

Just another quick piece of advice. If you are coming from a different ROM and/or different kernel let the battery charge to 100 then unplug from charger > Boot into CWM > advanced > Wipe Battery Stats

Exactly, which is why the manufacturers really need to fix battery life for each of the phones they put out.

I really want to wait for ice cream sandwich, but if I get the chance to get an iphone4 I'm going for it, even though it might be considered a downgrade specs wise, the apps, and better battery life make up for all the losses.

I decided to use the rooted version that came about yesterday afternoon and let it fully charge overnight and I've had it off my charger for 2hrs. My battery got worse, I'm now at 85% and all I've done was watch 2 short videos and came here a few times for a few mins. Also downloaded the newest cm7 nightly.
Overall I'm not impressed with the work LG put into this, seems like this was the CEOs teenage stepsons work so he could have his devs work on their other pos electronics.

A friendly word of advice. I came from the iPhone4 to the G2x. Even with the shortcomings this phone has had the iPhone 4 will only make you want your G2x back. Getting caught up in Apple's iron fist of control over your device sucks. I have had every iPhone since the original release. The battery life is decent on the iPhone 4, but not any better in my opinion than what I am getting now since I flashed a different ROM. So from experience I can say that is not a good thing.
I am running CM7 with faux's kernel on my G2x. since doing that I have had great battery life, no re-boots and no other issues. If you haven't done that it's worth a try.

Yeah, now with ios 5 u are no.longer tied down to iTunes, I have tried just about all the roms and kernel combinations, the best I got was 15 hours with heavy optimization that was running cm7 with faux oc UV kernel with set CPU profiles and juice defender, basically I disabled every feature that made my phone a smartphone, if I recall when I had an iPhone 3g (and the 4's battery has to.be better) I never needed to carry around my charger and I could actually play games, I just dropped from 100% to 90% in 27min, cmon, this is running the phone how it was made to run with gb rom from yesterday and bloat removed w root at 20% brightness.

Whenever I want serious battery life, I just turn on wifi calling. Since it disables the cellular radio completely I get way, way, way more battery time out of it. Just the other day I had the phone off the charger for 18 hours and was at 40% battery life. This on on the stock rom.
I manage cell phones and can confidently say that even the iphone users are unhappy with their battery life, as is nearly every smartphone user coming from a dumbphone or a blackberry.
Oh and I forgot to add, with ios5 you still are forced to use itunes for all of your music and syncing, you just don't have to physically hook up the cables. It's like a wireless tether sync.

Apple has absolute control over everything software and hardware, allowing for ultimate optimization. Add that to the massive battery and lack of true multitasking and you have a phone that will last a long time.
What you describe should not be happening though, and I suggest trying juice defender and reading on battery saving tips for android. But understand that phones are getting more powerful, while battery tech stays the same.

I don't think I do. I have had this crappy battery life since release day. I tried the factory reset stuff and ran with no apps. Once I noticed it didn't improve battery life I put the apps back on.
To me it is just the cell stand by/phone idle stuff always killing my battery.
I would love to use the wifi calling, but it didn't work very well at my house (no option to do so at work).

For people with battery life changes....Did you just upgrade to GB via the ROM available, or did you use the LG Tool that also updated basebands?
My phone is great on Froyo with the exception of battery life. I had read GB has better battery life. Trying to determine if changing the basebands will also help.

If you think you have bad battery life, my friend has an HTC Thunderbolt he tells me he only gets 4 hours of battery life... Takes him 6 hours to charge to full, 10 AM disconnects from his charger and at 2PM he has less than 10% left.

I get less than four hours if I don't turn off the screen, and constantly use my phone with brightness at 25%.

CM7 battery drain

so I've been bouncing back and forth between 2.3.3 roms and CM7 based roms lately and one thing I've noticed is that on all the cm roms I've used the battery seems to drain really fast while using the phone (web browsing, texting, anything basically with the screen on) compared to stock based roms. I can litteraly watch my battery % drop while I use it. I've tried various kernels, oc/UV, keeping screen brightness low, none shows too much improvement.is this a known issue or is it just my phone?

It could be just your phone. I'd say completely wipe your phone, and reinstall everything. If it doesn't help, then it might be the battery. But I would usually (with CM7 and Faux's DS kernel) average around 12 hours.
I'd also say give an ICS rom a try, I average around fifteen hours moderate to heavy use.

I did that too. I actually uninstalled pretty much every app I didn't use regularly and any stock replacement apps like yahoo mail app, swiftkey x, and a few others... but it didn't make a difference. my drain isn't too bad in standby, about 1% per hour, its when I'm using the phone. for example, say my phones fully charged, if I unplug it and surf the web, go on xda app, Facebook, and play a couple rounds of Scramble w/ Friends for lets say an hour straight, ill be at probably 40% left or less when done. on a stock based rom I'd say I'd probably be around 60% or more left. I'd stick with 2.3.3 if the camera wasn't so crappy but I take a lot of pics so no go.

yea I almost always do clean installs so maybe my battery's shot, probably gonna order an anker battery here soon. been holding off on ics till the bugs get ironed out but looks like a lot of progress is being made so gonna be giving that a shot too

Ive noticed this too. i have great battery life on any 2.3.3 any other roms seem to drain pretty fast. However i was able to tinker with some custom kernals (faux and morfics) and get the battery life to be noticably better on 2.3.7 roms like Singh,EB,CM7 etc. Bigger battery helped alot too. i use the Gorilla Gadgets 3500 mah. at least 2x more battery life than before easy.

Looking to get this phone for my fiancee tomorrow and am curious what the battery life is for this device running on stock. (Non-rooted) I have my device (atrix) rooted and all tweaked up but I'd prefer to get her a phone that was just good on battery life out the box. If I don't have to mess with it any, the better and easier.
She uses it moderately: Mostly for browsing tumblr and facebook. Occasional internet browsing. A bunch of texts and sometimes a few phone calls. Can she go through an entire 8 hour day with this device not needing a charge?

Battery life sucks out of the box. She could probably make it the 8 hrs but definitely would have to plug it in after that. From my experience anyway... I came from iOS so it was never really a problem for me till I got the Skyrocket. Low battery life makes sense given the specs. But I recommend picking up the extended battery for the Galaxy Nexus. It just fits in the Skyrocket and gives it a small but noticeable boost. BTW Installing a custom ROM like AOKP or SkyICS makes a HUGE battery life difference. Hope it helps. Good luck!

I'd say at the least just root it and install Titanium Backup so you can freeze all the bloatware and it should be fine stock. Mine was stock for a long time and I would get 10 plus hours of moderate use.

As stated the battery out of the box leaves something to be desires but if u get the time and have the confidence to root then I would definitely flash SeanZ Sky ICS. I am using that now and as I type this I have 14 hrs battery used and 4 hrs of display on. 8% battery remaining. Can't complain whatsoever! As for rooting and flashing there isn't much to worry about now a days. Hard bricks are few and far between with many of them being the result of simple carelessness or flashing roms not intended for their phones. Even this can be fixed though with a $50 jtag repair. Soft bricks only require a flash back to stock in Odin and you are good to go. Sorry to go off on such a tangent lol I just couldn't stop typing. Anyways, battery life is ok but charging will be necessary on stock with medium to heavy use. Hope she enjoys the Skyrocket as much as everyone else here has.

You have 3 options:
Option #1 (Stock with extended battery)
Well if you want to remain stock, the best option is to stay on GB and buy the Galaxy Nexus Battery from a verizon store ($26). With GB and the extended battery and the usage mentioned, I am sure you can go 8 hrs and even more.
Option #2 (Custom ROM with stock battery)
If you are looking for a good ICS ROM, out of the ones the best in my opinion is the Sky ICS 4.2E (17ish update). I know there is an update like the 4.2F, but it did not run as smooth as 4.2E so I went back to 4.2E.
Sky ICS has a good battery life, the new features of ICS, few nice tweaks like an extended power menu, wake by using the volume rockers, and overall runs very smooth little or no bugs.
Option #3 (Best battery life)
Killer combo is Nexus Extended battery + SkyICS, you will get 14 hrs of battery life.
If you dont want to buy a battery, you can just be on Sky ICS (Option #2). Read some threads on how to install the clockworkmode recovery, make sure you make a nandroid backup of the stock GB before you flash the Sky ICS and you should be good.

When my SR came out the box , was on 2.3.6 battery life was amazing with moderate usage ... Many people don't know how to use a lithium rechargable batteries

Battery Life on Infuse: Gingerbread vs Ice Cream Sandwich

Hi, so I recently got an Infuse from someone that is still on Froyo and I figure I might as well upgrade to a custom rom.
Since I care about battery life the most, I figure I would ask which version of Android provides the best battery life for the Samsung Infuse: Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich.
I probably won't be running apps that fetch/push for data a whole lot, which obviously helps the battery life. But I thought I'd ask to get someone's opinion on this specific phone and a comparison between Gingerbread vs ICS before picking a rom.

And the winner is... Gingerbread!

Gingerbread is a better battery saver. Although i get decent battery on ics and jellybean. I know i perfer all that ics/jb has to offer in features over having battery life. But for what your asking id suggest AEON or the stock gb. Aeon is very stable and has some cool extras without much battery drain

Really? I got faaar better battery life on Scott's Paranoid Android ICS build than I EVER did for any Gingerbread rom...

Honestly, I don't even remember by now
I have never payed that much attention to battery life..
usually lasts all day for me on JB, that's all I need

the more recent ics and jelly bean kernels get great battery life due to fixed bt and wifi drivers (the wifi driver and binary were taken from another device from what i understand) and more stable cpu clock code than it had initially. not too much more than stock but i have to say it is better for me. but i guess it all depends on usage. one may have better standby vs awake battery life or something. the available kernels have been this way for atleast a month. when we start to see more kernels with undervolt it should get better yet.

I'm using CM10 8/23 and my battery life is good.
One of the best I even made a snapshot (can't upload right now): 51% left after 12 hours 46 minutes.

That's why I'm in a dilemma between jelly bean and gingerbread. I do appreciate JB a lot, way better functions. But still the battery life and compatibility are big issues. I can get 2 days under gb but only less than 12 hours in JB, that's a big issue.

I have been getting great battery life with the latest JB ROMs I have been using. Pretty much on par with the GB ROMs I used.

Can't say i've had good luck with battery life, I used to average 3 hours of screen on time in Gingerbread, but since moving to ics/jb that has dropped to anywhere from 30 mins (if i leave the phone and standby drain eats it) to 1 hour 45 mins on a single charge...not good.
No rogue apps, no media scanner (i constantly check these things with betterbatterystats, i don't install anything i didn't install on gingerbread). Just the cell phone standby drain eating my battery alive (BBS reports it as GTALK_ASYNC and RILJ wakelocks).
I've been researching it for months now and get various answers (the wakelocks are caused by bad APN settings for example), tried all the fixes, still no luck. I suspect that it's probably a Rogers thing but who knows.

No rogue apps, no media scanner (i constantly check these things with betterbatterystats, i don't install anything i didn't install on gingerbread). Just the cell phone standby drain eating my battery alive (BBS reports it as GTALK_ASYNC and RILJ wakelocks).
I've been researching it for months now and get various answers (the wakelocks are caused by bad APN settings for example), tried all the fixes, still no luck. I suspect that it's probably a Rogers thing but who knows.

Yup, it's all been the same since ICS, I absolutely cannot get acceptable battery life, no matter what i do.

are you getting AOS drain while on wifi?
you may consider a factory reset and sdcard format
when you reinstall, decline all google locations and backup services.

I have done a factory reset, i formatted my sd card not too long ago (I also suspected this)
I also make sure google locations is disabled, never keep backup enabled (i did once by mistake and the auto restore nearly killed all my monthly data)
I am going to toggle wifi tonight and set a marker in BBS, i'll check the drain overnight (I did this a while ago and it did improve standby drain somewhat, but I am going to try it again)

i do notice battery drain in some areas. but not others. some people seem to think certain modems are effecting the cell standby drain, not sure myself. but there are many compatible modem.bins to try from att and t-mobile(t959v)

Just an update: wifi didn't help much.

I've been playing around a bit with different gb kernels, odex and deodex.
I found the drain issue much less on stock uclb3 kernel and rfs file system.
Almost all drain were associated with being on wifi...wakelocks and something else kills the battery.
If I have wifi off, there is usually not any issue.
You may have to play around a bit to see. My experience on cm9 and cm10 has been limited. I have noted several users noticing drain on cm9 and cm10 as well.
To avoid drain:
1. Use it to the max and constantly.
2. Leave the phone on airplane mode when not in use.
3. Turn off data (wifi and mobile data) and background data when not in use. I use this last mode.

Airplane mode of course makes batt life better (disabling data doesn't), but when I start having to make sacrifices I didn't have to on GB it becomes a problem for me. Why should I jump through hoops and gimp my convenience for battery life that still isn't even as good as GB?
Instead of that i'd rather try to find the root cause of the problem. Doing so then allows us to help others that may have the same problem.
It definitely is an issue with the radio (or rather CM code overlooking something concerning the radio). What exactly, i'm not too sure. I've tried different modems as well, UCLB3 on JB was awful for battery life, UCKL2 and UXKG3 are slightly better but still not that great.
I don't want to complain about these things, I always try to research first, but damn....i'm stumped.

Yeah, I agree with you there. The techniques I use is pretty simple. Pose the hypothesis. Start with a full deck and slowly eliminate or start minimal and add.
ex: flash jb without gapps; without microSd. try different modem; try a different kernel. different kernel from different build.
have to use it for a few days to find out.
do the same for cm9.
add gapps...
add microsd
etc..
at some point, you will find out contributing factors.

This is true, and you can save battery life w/ customization and now Scott is up to JB being one of the best battery life roms I've run
or just turn down your screen brightness
