Any word on if / when a streaming app will be available for android ?

I went looking for this exact same thing yesterday on google and everywhere else. As you may know they already have this app for the blackberry and iphone. They are currently working on it for android but they won't say when its going to be released. Its kinda like what google did with the Nexus One Car Dock. They will just let you know when its ready. Hopefully this comes sooner than later.

Okay Okay I have learned my lesson

I really love my Samsung Captivate phone from ATT. It's one of the better phones i have had from ATT...mind you not the best but one of the better phones. Recently I have become extremly frustrated with the whole froyo update situation. First the official release was going to come out in September then pushed back to November and now from what im hearing not until December through a OTA update from ATT. When I got my phone I was told by the ATT rep that an update from 2.1 to froyo 2.2 would becoming soon. I went on ahead and got the Captivate against my better judgment. That was this past summer and i paid 199.99 to upgrade. Well now it's November and all we get are rumors about an update that may or may not happen. Now that same captivate is selling for 129.99 at Best Buy. Now I feel ripped off, not only from ATT but now from Samsung. For now on whenever I purchase a new phone I will buy the phone based on what it can do at that time not based on what it might be able to do later on down the line, that way i won't be so frustrated. My older brother has an iphone 4 and now im really starting to get upset because now he is streaming netflix movies and doing a host of other things with his phone that my phone may or may not be able to do. I know that developmentally the iphone is limited but...you get what you pay for out the box and your not waiting for the phone to be able to do something else later on down the line. Im seriously thinking of just caughing up the money and picking up an iphone 4 from the Apple store this weekend. If I do that then I will give away my Craptivate to anybody who wants it because i wouldn't feel right charging someone for it being as though it's already outdated with 2.1 firmware on it.
Ill buy it if you want to sell it

First, you shouldn't be upset about the price dropping. All electronics have a dramatic price drop after a release. You should expect that.
Second, there is a Froyo update coming out for the phone. No doubt about it. We have already seen it released for the international version. We have two leaked releases for the Captivate. If there wasn't an update coming out, Samsung wouldn't be spending the time in making these builds. Also, you bought a Captivate with 2.1. The box doesn't say, Android 2.1 with a 2.2 update coming soon.
I also wouldn't call Android 2.1 "outdated". Compared to Android 2.2, yes it is outdated. But compared to other mobile operating systems, it's advanced. I cannot think of anything iOS can do that Android 2.1 cannot.
Now, with regard to applications: this last year has been huge for Android. They now have the volume of users and where there's volume, the developers can make money. You speak of Netflix, they will be releasing an Android app in Q1 of next year.
It could be that this phone is too advanced for you. iPhones are great and easy to use. If you don't understand all of the enhancements that Android brings, then maybe an iPhone is best for you. If being able to stream Netflix NOW instead of 2 - 3 months from now is that important to you, then get an iPhone and trade off:
Open source goodness
Awesome community support
Phone customization
Flawless google integration
More hardware options (you're not stuck with just one style phone)
Mass storage capabilities
You're not dependent on iTunes
File structure access
Build your own apps (google app inventor)
Up to 48 GB of storage
Replaceable battery
$5 monthly insurance (at&t doesn't offer insurance for the iPhone)
REAL multitasking
Memory management (If you choose to manually do it. Android is great at managing memory itself.)
The awesome Widgets
Notification bar
Oh, and the list above doesn't even mention any of the infinite possibilities if you chose to root your phone.
My question is why do you need the "official release"? The leaked version is probably just as good (I saw probably since OTA isn't out). I love it and am not really looking forward to the official one. Also most android phones are not in 2.2 so you really shouldn't feel outdated. By the way Amazon gives this phone for free (well 1 cent to be exact).
Edit: Didn't see above post; says it all better than me.
Frustrating, ain't it? Also part of the fun of the gadget.
Heck, searching for news on when the update'll be released is how I get through the workday! (I've also spent too much time flashing different incarnations of Cognitian's ROMs - Which are great, by the way).
The update will come, then we'll all be clammoring for Gingerbread!
@skinien - Great reply!
Not being able to watch Netflix movie on your phone really has nothing to do with Samsung, AT&T or the Captivate. Netflix decided to release their Android version later than the other platforms so there is nothing anyone can do.
So the real question is why do you need 2.2 right now? What capability are you looking for that will only work in 2.2? Personally, the only thing I need 2.2 for is voice dial over bluetooth.
cool story bro
There will always be an OS, hardware, phone coming soon/out right now better than what you have. *****ing about what you have is certainly an option. Not a good one, IMO, but definitely an option.
I am still using stock 2.1, rooted, with sideloaded Wireless Tether and Flash 10.1, and launcherpro hides the bloat.
With the exception of being able to moves apps to the sd, what is missing?
Who needs FroYo, anyway?

Well..if you will feel bad selling it.I'll gladly pay you for the shipping of it to my home. Feel free to get the I-phone if this is what you are wanting to do. They work great for what they are.I bought both of my sons theirs last August when I got 2 Captivates for my wife and myself. So I can always use a spare one
Your not alone in your feelings of anger over not getting what was promised,I too am a bit pissed off about it as well. I do know that in time it will be available in a official capacity..but in the mean time I'll wait it out like everyone else is doing that wants it. Sooner or later there will be a completely stable custom rom for it that isn't a PIA to load and has everything working properly on it.This is what I am looking forward too,but again it is a waiting game for me and many others..
Feel free to PM me your mailing address for the shipping cost if you elect to give it away..
Thanks

Screw the official release, get froyo now!. nothing like free tethering. Im sorry but next flex streaming? who cares i got flash! i get hulu streaming lets see an iphone do that.. my droid takes a poopoo on the iphone.
There are plenty of awesome, free ROMs here. Try one on for size before you go spending hundreds of dollars to be told what you can or can't do with the phone you just bought.

You have word reference on android, not even a close one on iphone. I dont really use my ipod touch to watch netflix. It gets stuck a lot and the screen is way to small. The only netflix app I used is netflix on windows media center. Why are you frustrated about netflix on a small screen now. And by the way, we have swype keyboard, it if not even on evo 4g. And my rooted phone has many paid apps and games on it, but I got them for free. You never need to jailbreak it to install some free games.

Who's going to really use the official att 2.2 with all its bloat ware anyway?
Iphone is for kids that want to show off their fart apps at school and for grandmas and grandmas who cant use a phone. On the other had captivate is for people who like to flash, unbrick their phones and explore the open world of android with will be the furture of mobile devices. Yeah your right, ive been reading a lot of responses to my post and from what i gather i have the better phone in the Captivate vs the iphone 4. I think i will keep it. Plus i just heard that you can root the phone and add a sample of froyo that should hold me over until the official froyo arrives. So Thanks a lot for your advise. I will be keeping my Captivate...not too mention 400.00 for an iphone is crazy.

Google Nexus Tab is coming this fall?

It is being developed together with LG?
Oh well ... I was thinking Xoom is the Google Tablet ... might be not.
http://www.gizmocrunch.com/android/6127-google-nexus-tablet-nexus-one-s
If you thought the Motorola Xoom was supposedly Google's own device like the HTC Nexus One and Samsung Nexus S, you may be gladly mistaken.
Google Nexus Tablet to join Nexus One & S
Reports are now coming in suggesting that Google is working with LG to release a Google Nexus tablet with a newer version of Android Honeycomb (Android 3.1?).
With questionable sales and a somewhat "rough around the edge" OS, the Motorola Xoom while being the first Honeycomb tablet, may not be the flagship Android tablet after all.
The details come courtesy of Eldar Murtazin, dubbed the "James Bond of Smartphones" by Engadget. Murtazin states that the so-called Google Nexus tablet scheduled for release sometime in mid-summer or early fall.
Just like the Google Nexus One and Nexus S, this tablet will no doubt be packing new features that will remain exclusive to the tablet for sometime before rolling out to other manufacturers.

Makes sense... just like the phone side had the HTC Dream / G1 before the nexus one, the tablet side has the xoom to take the hit for all of honeycomb's bugs before releasing their own-branded hardware. It's the price moto pays for being first.
Everyone said, that the problem of Xoom is Honeycomb (3.0). If google brings a tablet with 3.1... i think the update from 3.0 to 3.1 of the xoom will be the same. The hardware of Xoom are not bad.
That's true ... the Xoom hardware is more than enough.
The only problem is the Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Once Google gave proper updates to make it more stable, less force close, it will all set.

Wow this is such BS. Andy Rubin has already said in interviews that the Xoom is Google's reference device like the Nexus devices. Wouldn't make any sense having another one. Either way I'm not worried about getting software updates. They're giving the a Xoom to developers to make apps for Honeycomb too.

oh noo.. what should i do now?
XOOM is not yet release in the UK, hence i can still cancel my pre-order.
should i wait for the Nexus Tablet (not sure what to call it), or just go with XOOM?
i'm really confused with this announces...
I'll go this weekend to Miami, and i've planed to buy motorola xoom... but now...
First, the motorola xoom are heavier than samsung galaxy tab 10.1 and ipad2. but samsung have a lot of issues... My samsung galaxy S have the GPS broken... the touch wiz interface.. "i hate it" and RFS file system..
what can i do? buy motorola xoom? and die without upgrades? like milestone? buy ipad2 and die with itunes and IOS? glbenchmark said that his gpu is 10 times faster than tecra2...
i'm really confused with this.
-1 google...
Never believe Murtazin, he has no idea what he's talking about, all rumors he started was comlete BS, he's also likes to lick Steve's balls very much. I'm dead serious, Eldar Murtazin is just very bad, unprofessional "journalist".
I think we need to view the XOOM as the original DROID.
"stock" android 2.0 on DROID, followed rather quickly by the Nexus One.
Looks quite similar to me. With Honeycomb not being open sourced for the time being, I know I will be waiting now...
Yeah this kind of annoys me, having just bought the Xoom yesterday. I am glad it's stock honeycomb, I can't see the Xoom not getting future updates, and the hardware is darn good. Even after the tablets expo'd at CTIA I decided on the Xoom. We shall see I guess.
Google did put their name on the Xoom... They don't just put that on anything.
At any rate, no matter what you buy or when you get it, there's something newer, better, shinier, and faster right around the corner.
Sent from my Xoom
I am curious if Google is trying to take a larger hand in the hardware side of things, possibly encouraging news if they start to push updates them selves for many devices instead of 2.
Then again, they did hand out EVOs at IO...and it is far from Googles primary device.
Maybe Google/LG putting together a Tablet that will have the new processor Kal-El. Nvidia said that we are going to see tablets this fall whit Kal-El

April Fools comes early this year?
I think people should stop getting their panties all twisted at every tabloid rumor, or at least nudge their brains out of park. If you bothered to look, the rumor has a single source, and the same site (mobile-review) also stated that Android 2.x devices wouldn't get the license to upgrade to 3.0. Last I checked, you don't need a license to use Android.

Google may restrict what type of devices run Honeycomb so that a good user experience is maintained. I am sure there is something they can do if they really want to.
Actually, the licensing part comes wit hthe "Google" apps such as the market, they can deny access to that if they feel hardware and manufacturers don't meet their requirements.
That is how the platform works.
There is a vast difference between "may" and "will." Bill Gates may be the next Google CEO...or Charlie Sheen. The Earth may explode tomorrow from, you know, bad stuff in its core, and we won't have to worry much about anything else.
On licensing GApps -- It's not part of Android. While some may think this is a requirement to have for an Android device, it isn't. Lower-tier vendors have gotten around the issue with "unofficial" hacks. The one draw of GApps is market access, and with Amazon's store emerging as a credible alternative, what little leverage Goog has before is now even less.
The tablet exist and has Chrome OS.

[Q] Question about Upgrades

I'm a new android user and I am planning on a Xoom being my first android device.
Now I am planning on getting the wifi version and there's only one thing that's got me hesitant. Will the tablet receive updates like ice cream and above or will I have to rely on you guys at XDA for my updates ? Because I know this is pure Honeycomb and those usually get updated way faster by the devs. I would prefer official updates because i have never rooted or installed roms before and i know they can really mess up your device
Also does it appear that there will be many upgrades for this in a few years like will there be enough devs down the road?
Really what I want to know is should I get this or should I wait for LG to come out with their Nexus tablet ?

I don't think anyone can tell you that you will get updates to Ice Cream unless the manufacturer states it. To my knowledge, no manufacturer has announced that and in fact, I do not think that Ice Cream is far enough into development that it is even worth thinking about.
Xoom has already received an update for flash and I expect more coming including SD card support. I think there will be numerous Honeycomb updates before Ice Cream. You can of course wait as long as you like. It is always a waiting game for the next big thing. It is a never ending cycle. At some point you have to pull the trigger or you will be waiting forever.
Yeah I guess that's the problem with modern devices. Also i know i would be an early adopter but do you think it's worth it to get a android tablet at the start of their lifetime

I can only tell you that I love mine and knew the limitations when I got it such as tablet optimized apps being scarce. There were like 10-20 at launch when I got mine and now there are hundreds increasing daily. This does not concern me because I know develepors are working on it. I have emailed every single developer for apps I use to ask if they are working on honeycomb optimized versions and most have either already delivered or say they are working on it. I am not worried about Honeycomb app support at all. They will come.
There are also issues with the stock browser lagging on certain sites and crashing. When they crash, I hope the "report" button is being used by others so that it gets corrected. But overall, the browsing experience is near desktop like and pretty impressive.
My biggest gripe is the video playback of certain formats. Xoom cannot play any high profile 720p MKV file. You can convert the videos using applications like HandBrake and DVD Catalyst but that is time wasted if you are in a hurry to place a video on your Xoom and run out the door. I am hoping this is not a Tegra 2 processor issue that will never be corrected.

HDMI 'IN' ?

I bought a GoogleTV box from BestBuy some time ago and soon returned it as it was severely crippled in comparison to the MK808 I ultimately ended up with. After I worked on the Antenna, I am relatively happy with my decision, for the cost.. However: The Google TV had the coolest feature, and I want something similar.
If anyone knows of an Android STICK with the 'HDMI INPUT' feature, like the feature which allowed the GoogleTV to overlay a the Android screen over my cable box feed. I'd sure appreciate a heads up.

Not sure about the Google TV box specs but maybe it just needed a custom rom to make it more friendly.

It was cool.. you can do a picture in picture kinda thing.. where the Android OS is a transparent overlay. And, this allowed you to keep the android OS in the background aswell, so you would be notified of incomming email and messages and stuff while watching your other hdmi source.
It interacted with the TV guide and search features......I gave my Revue away, its just had way to many limits....

That would be extremely valuable to me. The more i looked into it the more it looks like it is not currently possible. To do it android drivers would have to be built for any additional hardware needed then you would need to make that work with an existing media play or develop your own.

[Rant] Chromecast, Nexus Q, GoogleTV

I would like to get a discussion going. See what others think, maybe theres some good I'm not seeing, or maybe more bad.
I like what Google does and I like their products. But they have been P***ing me off here lately with two of their products. The first one is the Nexus Q, not because of the price, but it's functionality, and when they released it... The other is the Chromecast. My reasons, I'm a GoogleTV owner. I've had my Sony Blu-ray GoogleTV since bate. Got it about 3 to 4 months after GoogleTV came out. Before the Nexus Q, GoogleTV had it's fair share of disappointments. No Hulu, which ain't the biggest deal breaker, with all the other content it does have. The Logitech being another one, then it taking so long for GoogleTV to get updated to Honeycomb. The Honeycomb update was about 9 months before Google I/O 2012, and the Nexus Q unveiling. Going into that year, at CES we seen a new batch of GoogleTV devices. It seemed like thing would start to look up for the platform. I wasn't expecting another version update at that years I/O, but maybe some more good news. Instead, we got the Nexus Q. I took it as a smack in the face. No real if any news about GoogleTV that I can remember at that years I/O. I hated it, I felt they should have gave us a Nexus GoogleTV with the Nexus Q features. Nonetheless, the Nexus Q didn't pan out. At this years CES we seen some more GoogleTV devices, and I felt at this years Google I/O they really need to do something with this platform. A new version update which they did, and I was hoping for a Nexus GooglTV/ Q hybrid which they didn't. I feel they should release a Nexus GoogleTV, I think it will help the platform. I'm glad about the update coming to GoogleTV, but can't help to think Google wasn't overly excited about the update. It seemed like they just said here, here's your stupid update. And now, they release another media device, that seems to feel like another smack in the face. And it's running a striped down version of GoogleTV source " http://blog.gtvhacker.com/ " There's rumors of another Media box coming from Google, is it a GoogleTV, or another smack in the face? Anyways the kicker, is both these devices were limited compared to GoogleTV. GoogleTV has been the redheaded stepchild of Google. It has it's potential I don't know why Google is doing so little with it. Let me know what you guys think. Do you think Chromecast will become more like GoogleTV. Do you think will see more and better things for the OG GoogleTV?
I don't really think Chromecast is headed to be an alternative or replace GoogleTV. I don't have any of them myself, but from what I've read about them, Chromecast seems like a replacement for an HDMI cable, just an easier way to transfer video and audio to your TV. Also, it makes it possible to play video from multiple devices like a tablet or computer pretty easily. The GoogleTV is a complete system that has everything contained to be able to get internet videos and movies to play on your TV, whereas Chromecast is merely a means to transfer the videos, kinda like DLNA.
It's not that I think their going to replace GoogleTV. It's more about the lack of support their giving the platform. Their entering basically the same market as the GoogleTV, with new products while ignoring another. Maybe after this update to JB I'll be more at ease. I would still like to see some hardware from Google tho...
