I have a few questions, and I'm sure the answers are here somewhere but filtering through these forums is rather daunting, so I hope you'll suffer a fw questions.
After installing WM6, there's no t9 input language. So there are seperate cabs for each language, but it seems that if I install 2 cabs, it overwrites the first language and I'm left with only one (the last) language installed.
How do I get to languages for input, like English and Spanish?
Just to clarify, I'm using andot's perfect wm6 ROM.
If I copy my contacts off my SIM, is this data going to be stored on my SD or in the memory?
Similar question for documents, temp files and ringtones. How do I keep all of this off the ROM/RAM?
Hardware Questions:
I found one copy of the i-mate PDF manual for this device, which turned out to be exactly like the paper copy I already had for Qtek.
Oddly, there's no picture of the device itself with arrows pointing at all the buttons, bells and whistles.
The jack on the bottom of the phone, is that 2.5mm? Is it just for hands free, or can it use a stereo headset for music?
The tiny hole right by that... is that for a hard reset?
WTF is the little slot-like gap in the top of the phone between the power button and the windows logo?
What do you call the internet and media player control buttons and is there an app to reasign them?
There are 3 led light holes on the face, what do they signal?
Install a T9 wich you can find in the extras.zip in phils BETA-thread. That will enable input.
The jack on the bottom is 2,5mm. You can buy 2,5 ->3,5mm adapter, or a headset with 2,5mm. Yes stereo hp is supported.
Tiny hole next to that is prolly a mic.
Slot-like? I'm not sure, but can imagine it's for use in a car. There is a button-fix in the before-mentioned extras.zip.
The green LED blinks to show that you have coverage. Blue LED for bluetooth, and the third blinks when wifi is activated. When charging your phone, one LED turns red.

2.5mm, any other 2.5mm headphone can be used
There isnt any hard reset button for that phone, to hard reset, you either use the software or press the two soft key and on the phone
The 3 LED light holes? I think you mean the top there
There are 5 holes, the left most one is for power status, yellow for normal, orange for charging, red for low power, the right most hole is for connectivity, yellow for WiFi, blue for BT, the 3 in the middle is simply the earpiece, while the hole above is the loudspeaker
Thanks for the replies guys! Just a few clarification questions and a bit of repeating things back to ensure I have it correct.
In regards to the language thing:
I did find the Extras.zip and did use the "English xT9.cab", but this only gives me one language input option when I hold down the * key. If I install a Spanish T9 after the English T9, I only get the Spanish language option when inputting text. I want them both... Is there any place to get the full western language(s) WM5 T9 cab?
Audio Jack:
It's good to hear that the jack is stereo. So I could get a set of stereo headphones/handsfree combo for music. Now I just have to wait for someone to hack support for bigger than 2gb of miniSD (I know there are some that still work, but the newer ones are faster...)
So, onto the lights:
To be clear, I'm not talking about the LCD display, just the lights in the hardware fascia.
Top Left
blinks green for GSM service
solid amber when connected to USB charger/PC
Top Right
blinks green for WiFi
blinks green for WiFi
Centre Bottom (under the "0+" key)
I've seen it lit when the keypad was lit for bootloader. I don't know when else it lights up
.
The T-Mobile quickstart guide says that middle bottom one is the mic, which makes no sense as mine is filled with that plastic like the other LED lights. More likely the mic is the hole between the headphone jack and the pound (#) key .
The slot-like opening on the top back of the phone is the ringer/loud-speaker.
Along the narrow outer side of the phone, going clock-wise, we have 3 buttons:
volume toggle
comm manager
power/quicklist key
camera button
So the left and right-most buttons on the Start/Home row of buttons under the LCD are the "soft keys."
On the face above the standard numeric keypad and beneath the LCD, from top to bottom:
Start, Home, Back, Contacts/Menu/Context
Internet, Rewind, FF and Play/Pause
Extended press of Start key does nothing.
Extended press of Home starts Celetask (what would it start if no Celetask, and how would I configure it?)
Extended press of Back key does nothing.
Extended press of Contacts key does nothing.
Extended press of ie and windows media buttons do nothing, when not playing media, all 3 media buttons do nothing except start windows media player (and because these buttons are bigger than the more useful row above, windows media player starts a lot).
Is there more configurability for changing purpose of Media buttons when at Home screen or there is no Media context?
Is there any more configurability for adding extra extended key-press function for home/start row keys?
The "button fix" cab is to do what? Just make the buttons work properly with WM6, or to allow reassignment?
There's no way to disable all function (i.e. backlighting) of thumbstick while phone is locked?
I guess this is more of a WM6 question, but this type of smart phone doesn't use the Today screen with tabs?
--------
I'm actually a little surprised that there's no diagramming anywhere of button functions and that most binaries released don't have NFO files or that there's no list of what these standard files everybody downloads do. There's a couple nice lists of files to download, with some reference links, but a lack of information about their purposes.
That's why I was hoping that somewhere there was a Quick Start guide for the phone. Actually, I just found T-Mobile's here (clicky)
What's really stupid is that every other provider/reseller than T-Mobile of this handset makes you sign up for a "club" to access these PDFs and if your IMEI or serial number isn't in their database, you can't join the club.
Again guys, thanks for the info and I look forward to being able to contribute in the future.
I think they have to make you sign up for a club because it contains the ROM upgrade and the ROM are licensed, hence they just can't publish it publicly. Same reason why the ROM archive in xda-devs was told to be taken down months back ( but we dont give a damn )

I applaud that. I really hope they can't do anything against you.
I still have a few hanging questions.
I read somewhere about the Bluetooth stereo needing a registry hack. Does the hardware audiohone jack also require a hack? Is it proper stereo or joint stereo?
I'm still interested in changing functions of media buttons and adding extended keypress function to otther buttons like Celetask uses with the Home key.

The files there are for Vox and Xcalibur (sp?), do they work for Tornado too?
I found my answer to the English Spanish question here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=271641&highlight=t9+spanish+english
* Extract T9SpanishLdb.dll and T9ImeRes.Dll040a.mui from t9_tornado.rar to \Windows
* [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\T9 Input Method\LDBs], add string value '040a' with data 'T9SpanishLdb.dll'
* [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\T9 Input Method\MUI\Languages], add '040a' to the list of 'Available', so the data will be '0409,040a' (or whatever your phone uses.. just add the one for the language you're installing)

Any updates on re-mapping the media buttons? I would love to re-assign these keys to Messaging and other apps I use frequently.
On my Samsung Blackjack, there is actually a function in the Windows Mobile Settings called "Buttons", which allows me to reassign the buttons to pretty much anything. Does anyone know if there is a small app or something that could do this on my SDA (I have upgraded it to WM6 using the posted sticky instructions - thanks you guys, awesome work!)

I don't know anything yet and no one has answered here.
The buttons are pretty stoopid. I didn't buy this phone for mulitmedia. I bought it for productivity apps. And these media buttons are so big that it's hard to miss them when using softkeys.
So until someone gives an answer, I guess we have to find our own answers and there's a bit of a learning curve for me.
I think I found it - check out post #4 in this HowardForums thread:

These exact instructions worked for me on my SDA running WM6 Perfect English Edition. I changed the last button to go to Messaging (tmail.exe).

This wasn't the full answer to my question.
There's also a reg key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\T9 Input Method\Settings] Options
Changing the d-word value to 1033 (00000409 should work too) from 00003317 is what gave me my language settings back.
It took a bit of looking to find out what 00003317 was. 3317 is a ghost script name for a Chinese simplified font, as far as I can tell.
The one thing you'll notice as you look at that string is that key shares that string with a another dword entry, "chinese pinyin."
As I don't read or speak putonghua, or any hua, I thought it might be nice to delete this key. But it just keeps turning up over nad over, like a bad penny.
there's another string elsewhere:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\TOUCH] Which could probably be safely removed from the ROM.
I wonder if we collected a list of all useless registry entries and had someone remove them from a future ROM, how much space could we save?

The files are in the Windows directory and they're just shortcuts. Easy to edit.
Just make sure that you use the button fix if your upgrade mod requires it, otherwise those shortcuts don't exist.
We'll also have to find out if it interferes with media player when it's the active app/window.
When I type something on my text messages there is a screw up.
EX: If I text "i am going to store" and i dont hit space after store it sends the message but keeps the "store" in the message and if i hit send it will send "store" again by itself... I have to hit space since it recommends something and unless i hit the word it wont go away...
any suggestions?
Adding puntuation afterwards should clear it up, or tapping on the word, or maybe even hitting enter (although I don't know if that works!)

If this is what I think it is, bring up one of the HTC keyboards and turn the switch on the ABC/T9 button onto ABC. That should disable it.
Yes, it is the most idiotic typing "aid" ever invented.
Turned off auto complete and auto suggest and still doesnt work!!! Did a soft reset! This is so stupid!
I will try the T9 thing.
T9 WORKED!!!
thank heaven!!
thanks allot guys
this has been driving me mad. i tried turning off word completion etc and that didnt help but this seems to have, thanks
yes it definitely fixed it for me. Great that was driving me mad.
Yes Kill xT9 Or Hit a Space at the end of every text.

Turning off T9 did not help at all. I still get the black line at the bottom of the screen. The f*#$%#% thing still wants to suggest some very useful words for me! Any other ideas?
Did you follow the steps?
When you start typing a new sms bring out the virtual onscreen keyboard, press the arrow and choose Full QWERTY. In full QWERTY mode you should have a little button on the bottom left of the screen with "ABC T9" written on it. Press it and let the magic work.
Now press fn + Space and a menu appears. Check that it is indeed in ABC mode. If you want to be on the safe side go also into "T9 Settings" (on that menu) and kill (untick) everything. Or at least that's what I did.
Excellent, thanks. The black bottom bar from SMS editing was very annoying. Now it's gone, thanks.
New SMS message, FN+ Space and then check ABC.
Thx!
Thx! You were right. In fact FN + Space then choosing ABC instead of English really does work. That #$%#$% annoying black thing disappeared! Thx!

Hello,
I noticed that since I took the TP from the Box the volume buttons are not working as they should... it shows the volume screen and also move (like arrow key)
Someone experienced this?
I was searching google but could not find any solution or similar problem
i dont understand. sounds like it is working
I have applied a few tweaks from this forum and now when I press a volume button, either one, it brings up the volume screen as expected, but on a second press, of either button, the volume screen disappears and the volume does not change. Not sure if this is what you are seeing.

This is exactly what I mean... It just show the screan but does not work. And it is since I took it out of the box... It might be possible it is bacause the Czech localization program which is not on English TPs...
If you experience this problem, do you have some special localization for keyboard?
I am having the same problem as well with my Sprint Touch Pro. Clicking either volume button once brings up the volume screen and I have to use my finger to adjust volume on the screen. Holding either volume button does not raise or lower the volume. Doing so exits the volume control screen (and then quickly brings it up again). It almost seems like it's trying to scroll in whatever program is active.
Has anyone figured out what might be causing this?
problem resolved in my case

I had the same problem, but I found the solution ... at least is is working for me now ...
I start to think your way ... since I am also using localization ... InterWrite 9.5
I changed some things (at least those that I remembered that I changed before). Than InterWrite asked for soft reset ... I did it and now it works.
Try to change some settings ... I disallowed support hardware keyboard (I think this was the most important) and some other settings. If it's not working for you and you use the same localization soft, write here and we can go through every tab of InterWrite and do the same settings.
AlPachino, you are genius... it was enough to swith the "Hardware Keyborad" in the Interwrite and now it works... I think we should report this bug to SW developer of that soft...

done already
I'm also having this problem, but I don't know what InterWrite is (pretty sure i'm not using it).
Is there somewhere in the registry to reassign these buttons back to their intended purposes? I assume some people have remapped them to be UP/Down scrolling, so we probably know where the registry settings are.

yeah, I took the easy way out by flashing a new ROM. I'd still love to hear the solution, but for now that has (obviously) fixed the issue for me.

I did a backup, then hard-reset, and that cured the problem.
I'm running the elite ROM right now, so it's not the ROM, it has to be one of the programs I added. So, I'm going to add them in 1 at a time and see who the guilty party is.
Edit: I put them all back in, and it now works fine. I tried replicating all the registry tweaks I had used and it still works... so I don't know what the answer is to why it was broken in the first place.
Same issue with me .
Used a hebrew localization, however, I hard resetted and re-installed and it seemed to be working fine. Now it is broken again just as you guys describe.
If anyone could find the reason or the hidden registry key, I'd be very grateful.
Happened to me too.
Did any of you have Diamond Tweaks installed? I noticed it on mine after this install. I know it has some tweaks in it for remapping scrolling. I've since hard reset, and installed everything except Diamond Tweaks. The button is still working as expected.
Fring is also a problem
I figured out that when I load Fring on mine the volume keys fail to work. I didn't have the problem on my Diamond so I'm guessing it's something to do with the (stock) ROM on the TP.
ROM: 1.90.405.1 WWE 08/01/08
Radio: 1.02.25.19
Protocol: 52.33.25.17U

None. In fact, it is one of the reasons I reset in the first place.
The latest thing I installed was "Startup service" but I don't see what does it have to do with it. I'll try to go to one of my recent backups and check.
Luckily I backup almost daily now (hard reset was a *****).
Just letting you guys know. So far found 2 programs that cause this behavior for me:
P.D.A.C Hebrew localization (talked to their support and they confirm the problem)
FDC Start Menu - http://www.dotfred.net/FdcStartMenu.htm
Real shame for both because I need hebrew and I liked FDC Start Menu a lot.
S2U2 1.35 will cause this problem, if you uninstall it you will be fine.. I think this should e fxed in the ne ver.
1.- First I wanna know how to add buttons to the Button manager... i mean Settings > Buttons > the box where the "button 1 (hold)" should be isn't there... just a "repeat Control" and "repeat Speed" slider... (note to readers, i'm using a spanish rom, i'm not sure if this is exactly what it says in the english rom but it should be similar).
1.5.- Also, i have another phone (the first one is a Motosurf and the second is a HTC Touch Viva) and it does have the box "assign app to button" (or something like that, read previous note), but it just displays one button, the "Send" key and it's mapped as "button 1 (hold)".
Is there a way to add more buttons? so i can add the volume up or volume down and the "end key" (hold) options???
2.- And the final and most importatn question is if there's a way to activate the windows default task manager on the motosurf, the one that looks like an arrow pointing downwards on the home screen... i know that some roms have it and some don't (i had that experience on the touch viva), but i want to know if there is a way to just activate it on the stock rom without flashing.
Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me, and sorry if my english is poor and for the lack of screenshots to explain myself better.

If you're a programmer you can probably change it.
If you want the software to change the buttons that you can't change, than you should buy AEVButton Plus. http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php
Otherwise you can only change the buttons that the settings allows you to.
hello all.
weird problem i got here.
theres a small lng button that switches languages so when i type i can either choose arabic or english.
well if i have the phone interface set to english and press the lng button nothing happens. i am stuck with typing in english only.
if i have the phone interface set to arabic and press the lng button i can switch to english and type in both languages.
whats up with that?
I was never aware of this "language" button you speak of.. And I think I have the phone since September.
Then you'd be familiar with alt-space, which brings up the international keyboard selection menu, which is most likely what he's talking about. I've noticed that it isn't very responsive sometimes and occasionally suffers a long delay before it appears if it appears at all. Most I've noticed this on the HTC Status' stock 2.3.3 and the stock EU 2.3.5 rom, so it's safe to say it's probably a minor bug in HTC's software.
its the button to the right of the FN key. on some it says "Tab" ... but on mine it says Lng and has speaker icon for voice.
